1. 21 JUMPSTREET
1. The purpose of a film trailer is to advertise a film to an audience who have not been shown
this particular product before. A trailer is meant to give the audience a brief insight to what
the film offers. Film trailers are really important because it helps to the audience decide if
they would like to watch the film or not. A film trailer separates its self from a advertising
film poster this is because a poster would just show people who the characters are and
maybe the set and location of this film. However a trailer goes even further it’s a way of
making the audience visualise how the film will look and what they would be expecting in
this movie. A film also helps the audience know what type of genre the film will be meaning
a film trailer that involves props such as guns and people getting shot might symbolise that
it’s an action film they would be watching.
The film that I am analysing is 21 jump streets. The genre of this film is action comedy how can I tell
from this is because of the way the actors are acting. The most important part of a film is the way
the actors perform their rolls. This helps the audience judge the type of genre the film might be. 21
jump streets is an action comedy genre reason being because the actors throughout the trailer show
their humorous side to themselves. Example of comedy in the trailer is one of the actors gets
stabbed and he feels okay about it every one laughs about it. If that was an action film there would
be serious faces and the man might have been dead. We know it’s an action film because violence is
shown in the film.
The film targets teenager’s reason being the film is set in a high school this is a typical setting of films
that aim to attract teenagers. We also notice the dumb childish behaviours both actors share in the
film this could represent its aim to attract teenagers because it conforms to a realistic view of a
teenagers life. The film also targets audiences who have an interest in comedy; how can the
audience tell the film is comedy is because of the amount of humour that is produce by the two
characters. Their dumb mistakes and funny comment made by each other make the trailer seem
rather funny and so it draws the comedy audience towards the film. Action comedy audiences are
invited because acts of violence and comedy are produced to create the two genres form to create a
hilarious plus intense film to watch.
The trailer is structured in a way that the audience find this film interesting to watch. The trailer
starts by showing the actors lives of when they were in high school the actors in the trailer are
compared as total opposites were one of the actors use to get bulled by the other. Through the
trailer we are shown they meet up 20 years later in a police recruitment this is where they notice
each other and become friends. Both actors are put on an undercover mission to head back to high
school. The funny and interesting thing about this film trailer is that it shows the actors when they
were in high school on them meeting up again and then going back to high school. This creates an
enigma making the audience want to find out what will happen again when both actors are put
through high school again. This leaves the audience asking questions whether the actors would be
labelled cool or geeks again. This is what interests the audience also the violence and funny
moments both actors share with each other makes it exiting to want to watch.
2. The trailer is smoothly paced and fairly mellow meaning the tempo of sound used was normal it was
not too high or too low but it was normal. This is because of the fact that this is an action comedy
film the convergence between the two genres in making a trailer needs to be fair in both
conventions. The framing of each seen followed the pace of the non-diegetic sound that was playing.
The pace of the non-diegetic sound was normal so the frame speed was a ease. The reason for a
normal pace frame in this film is because the trailer does not want the audience to miss any funny
scenes that might come out the trailer. The trailers main aim is to show the audience that they are
humorous scenes as well as action scenes. The mise-en-scene of each scene or frame helps to
construct a clear picture to the audience of what they are watching. Example this trailer breaks its
self-down to when the actors where young in high school to the actors in 20 years’ time in a police
station and to them going back to high school again. The Mise-en-scene of the props locations etc.
helps the audience to understand that all of these actions happened in a different period of time in
the film. Also the mise-en-scene helps the audience to identify the genre of the film. E.g. guns in a
film symbolises violence danger the audience are shown this in this film. They straight away get an
idea that this is to an action genre.
Voiceovers of the actors are used a lot in this film trailer. The reason for this could be the fact that
the trailer wants people to listen to the funny lines the actors are saying. It also could be the fact
that it’s a way best way of making the trailer amusing.
