2. What is ChatGPT?
• ChatGPT is a large language model
• Can understand and respond to natural language input
• Can be used for a variety of tasks
• Answering questions
• Generating text
• Solving problems
• One of many new AI tools available (others include
paraphrasing tools, art generators, text to image,
personal assistants, therapy bots, etc)
3. Large Language Models Are
• Basically bullsh*t generators
• They work by stringing together prediction tasks
• Predicting the likelihood of a word given either its preceding
context or its surrounding context
• Unsupervised when deployed
• “Stochastic parrots”
4. Students are using these tools to
• Sometimes help with homework
• Sometimes save time on tasks
• Sometimes compensate or mask neuro-divergency
• Sometimes cheat
5. Implications for us
• Teachers may or may not know about or recognize AI
generated content
• Detection can be difficult
• There are detection tools available
• They don’t work particularly well
• Our job is to prepare student for success
• That means understanding and using the tools available to them
• We need to get on top of AI tools. Understand them. Teach
students how to use and think about them effectively.
6. Clear Guidelines and Instructions
• Communicate to students
• how,
• when, and
• in what context it is appropriate to use AI tools.
• Emphasize that critical thinking about these tools is the
goal
• Focus on transparency and fact checking
• Not gotcha academic integrity violations
7. Considerations
• What do we want our students to leave the class
knowing?
• How can they use AI to help acquire that knowledge?
• What skills will students need to develop to be successful?
• How can they use AI to develop those skills?
• What habits of mind do we want to support and develop
in our students?
• How can AI tools be harnessed to develop those habits?
8. Educators have been
sharing ideas for using AI
tools in their classrooms:

collection-of-creative-ideas-to-use-ai-in-education/
This is linked on my page: http://maryliareiter.com/AIResources
where I have links to sample assignments.
10. Use Rubrics and Clear Expectations:
ChatGPT can
create rubrics for
you to evaluate
the output of
ChatGPT!
11. Multiple Choice Questions
ChatGPT can help you to improve your
multiple choice questions (although it
tends to write very easy ones).
12. Example: Personalized Feedback
• You can input both instructions and student results into
ChatGPT and prompt it to analyze the work identifying
areas of strength and areas that need improvement.
• Remember, though, that there are privacy issues here.
13. Example: Re-write Instructions
• Original:
• ChatGPT Friendlier Version:
Accommodations Help: Most testing accommodations are available in Respondus
Monitor. If you plan to use accommodation software (such as Read&Write or
Zoomtext) during testing, please also use it when taking the Practice Test. Follow this
link for details: https://www.cscc.edu/services/disability/student-testing.shtml
14. Example: Re-Do Your Syllabus/Course
Calendar
• ChatGPT can
• Give you the new semester dates for your syllabus.
• Recategorize content
• Change how content is presented (for example, from a table to a
list)
• Develop a lesson plan on a topic
• Etc.

Editor's Notes
Maybe also warn about some of the dangers.
Will the jobs that students have in mind be replaced by AI?
Will AI threaten whole industries?
Will AI kill us all?
Be aware,
ChatGPT can write whole papers, in the style of a high school student, about a specific topic, book, historical event, etc.
It does tend to make up citations.
It is somewhat behind on the news and current events, but BING isn’t, and eventually, there will be no lag.
It is trained from data on the web, including places like Reddit – it reflects inequalities in society. For example, it has a hard time assuming that a doctor or lawyer would be anything other than a white man.
ChatGPT can also help you to improve your MC questions (although it tends to write very easy ones).
Frame feedback positively and suggest activities to facilitate reflection.
“You did great! Remember, ChatGPT is a bullsh*t generator. You know more than it about this topic!”)
