Evil In The Bell Jar
Evil can be defined as being "profoundly immoral and wicked" (Oxford Dictionaries, 2017).
In my texts, evil is displayed in many forms. In Disgrace, David Lurie 's evil is caused by his distorted viewpoints and in The No.1 Ladies Detective
Agency, all three cases are as a result of poverty. In The Bell Jar, Esther 'sevil suicidal attempts are caused by her narcissistic insanity; in The Crow,
evil is an offset of Eric 's traumatic experience and need for revenge; and in Fargo, evil arises as a result of bullying. Each character mentioned
provides a different way of expressing the evil within them.
The above definition gives us a basis in determining what research has revealed as evil's two root causes. The first is circumstantial; ... Show more

Soraya is a prostitute, whom David sees every Thursday afternoon. David sees her merely as a beautiful object that he can make use of by stating
that her 'beauty does not belong to her alone" (Coetzee, 2009). She is a 2D persona for David, resulting in their sex being "lengthy, abstract and
rather dry" (Coetzee, 2009) and Soraya avoids David as soon as he begins to pry into her personal life. Melanie Isaacs, on the other hand, is not a
prostitute but a student of David 's, who attracts David due to her purity and looks. David is unable to admit that he raped Melanie, trying to
justify his actions by saying that "she does not resist" (Coetzee, 2009) and that he is merely acting as a "servant of Eros" (Coetzee, 2009). We are able
to see how evil David is in the way that he never feels shame for his wrongdoings, despite being disgraced (publically shamed and being dismissed
by the university). David claims that he was "enriched by the experience" (Coetzee, 2009) of raping Melanie and in court says "I have said the
words to you" (Coetzee, 2009) showing the futility of the apology. The root of David 's evilness is not deeply explored in the novel, but can be
linked to his skewed mindset that women were made as an appendage to man and to be used by man. David 's deep passion for poetry of the
Romantic Era, has led him to want to follow in the footsteps of his role model, Byron, who was known to have been a womanizer, having

Evil Revivalists And Evil Sceptics
In philosophy, there are two groups of people who debate the concept of evil, Evil Revivalists and Evil Sceptics. Evil Revivalists are all about evil
being a useful term in today's society. They argue the word "evil" is the only concept we can use for the worst of the worst. They also say that only by
facing the evil in our lives can we prevent it. This theory helps society to focus our limited energy and resources when describing evil and helps us to
respond better to evil. The Evil Sceptics on the other hand think evil is concept that is too extreme and only hinders our thinking about bad events.
They argue that evil is often associated with the supernatural and lacks explanatory power. They also say that it is way too harmful a concept as

Problem of Evil
1.(1) According to Buddhist beliefs, there is neither a soul nor an essential self. Karma is understood as good or bad intentional actions performed in
the mind, body, and speech. Good intentions will lead to good consequences and bad intentions will lead to bad consequences. Therefore, good karma
is better than bad karma, but no karma is better than good karma. The intentions performed in a small scale will affect a person's life on a large
scale. Each person is the cause of what he or she reaps in the world. The individual is responsible for his or her own karmic results. The way in
which they think, the physical action that they perform, and what they say further affect karmic intentions and results. By knowing this, a person
can change his or her behavior in an attempt to achieve good karmic results. In Buddhist Literature, there is a list of ten meritorious deeds:"
generosity, morality, meditation, reverence, service, transference of merit, rejoicing in others' merit, hearing the doctrine, teaching the doctrine, and
straightening one's views." By completing at least one of the ten meritorious deeds, a person can experience good karma. For instance, if we are
kind and help someone in need of help, whether or not we know him or her, then that is good karma. If someone is sick or injured and we offer
them help to get better, then that is good karma. On the other hand, if we curse because we miss the bus or the bus is late to bring us to school or
work, then this is bad

Lady Macbeth Is Not Evil
According to William Penn, "A misery is not to be measured from the nature of the evil, but from the temper of the sufferer." There are people who
are willing to seek their own desires even if they must attempt diabolical plans to pursue them. Some people can carry on with their evil deeds with
satisfaction, while others will regret their own decisions coming into effect. In the play, Macbeth, evil deeds had to be met with the main characters in
order to achieve their goals for royalty. Despite their success in gaining their power, there were some characters who could not handle the ongoing
immorality that lurked within them from the start. The main villain, Lady Macbeth, was portrayed as a cruel person, but her behaviors defined her
otherwise. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her paranoia has come to a point where she suffered from mental illness. This issue was noticed as she was caught sleep–walking while rubbing her
hands and commanding her evidence to be forgotten, saying, "Out damned spot! ... What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power
to accompt?" (V, I, 32, 35). Her mental illness proved herguilt knowing she cannot get the memories of her evil plan out of her head. Unlike a vile
person, who would rather ignore their crimes and guilt, she kept thinking about it in a worried matter. Her mentality eventually led to sorrow.
Macbeth disapproved her feelings about the misdeed as he ordered the doctor to "Pluck from the memory of rooted sorrow / Raze out the written
troubles of the brain" (V, iii, 41–42). His statement about his wife's illness insisted that she was distracted by her remorse. The paranoia she faced
made her reveal her repentance and made her less ambitious for royalty. Her emotions over–brimmed her mind and diverted her behaviors negatively.
These behaviors worried the doctor when he prayed, "Remove from her the means of all annoyance / And still keep eyes upon her" (V, I, 72–73). His
assumption of Lady Macbeth taking her own life foreshadowed her tragic death, proving once again that her guilty conscience made her snap instead of
letting her forget her evil deed. She could no longer handle the ongoing thoughts that haunted her since the crime despite her

Evil: The Problem Of Evil In Western Philosophy
The Problem of Evil in Philosophy
What is the classic "problem of evil" in the Western philosophical/theological tradition (the "trilemma")?
The problem of evil is the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil with that of a deity who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent.
The trilemma was stated by the Greek philosopher Epicurus during antiquity and was restated during the modern period by David Hume. Epicurus
poses a trilemma in order to refute the notion of an omnipotent and omnibenevolent God. He first argues that if God is unable to prevent evil, he is not
omnipotent. If, alternatively, God is not willing to prevent evil, he is not good. How then, Epicurus asks, can evil exists if God is both willing and
able to prevent evil?
Epicurus' trilemma exposes a logical contradiction in the Judeo–Christian conception of God and his creation of the world. He attempts to force his
opponents to either admit that God is not omnipotent or not omnibenevolent. In order to escapes this trilemma, one would either have to deny the
existence of evil in the world or come up with an explanation for how evil can exist when God is both willing and able to prevent such evil. What
does Immanuel Kant mean by "radical evil"? Radical evil refers to a source of misbehavior that is caused by unfaithfulness, hypocrisy, and delusion in
a person who aims to be moral or good. Kant believes that this unfaithfulness stems from a "perversity of heart" rather than a desire to be

Evil Is Good Or Evil?
Evil is the privation of goodness; in other words, evil is goodness spoiled. You can have good without evil, but you cannot have evil without good.
There are forces of good and evil constantly working against each other in this world. Although it may seem as if evil has won sometimes, good will
always prevail in the end. In Genesis 1–2, we can read that God created all things and called them "good." Evil, or sin, is inescapable for humanity. We
were born with a sin nature, and God loves us and has given everyone a chance for redemption anyways. God has and always will conquer sin in the
end, but for now, it is our choice to side with either evil or good. God created us in his image, but he does not want to hold absolute control over us.
Part of his promise to us is our power of free will. Of course, God only wants what is best for his children, but he cannot live our lives for us. Just
like an earthly mother or father loves their child with all their heart and only wants the best for them all their lives. But, there always comes a day
when they must let their child go and experience life on their own and make their own decisions. And that is exactly what God has done for us; he has
let us go, only in hopes that we will make the right decisions and return to him. God's love for us is unconditional and unwavering, no matter what we
may do to disappoint and betray him.
There are two types of evil; natural and moral. Moral evil is what people do to people, whereas natural evil

Evil: Definition Of Physical And Moral Evil
Physical and Moral Evil To understand physical and moral evil, people must first look at the existence of evil itself. Many people ask why there is evil
in the world. They wonder how an all–merciful God and evil can coexist. The dictionary definition of evil is: "profoundly immoral and malevolent", but
according to the catholic faith, evil is anything that is antithetical to the will of God.
Physical evil, also called natural evil, is any event that does not occur as a result of humans choices. Examples of physical evils would be: natural
disasters, diseases, and any act of God. There are many arguments to why we have physical evil. One theory is that it is necessary for life on our
world to exist. All of the natural events that

The Existence Of Evil And Evil
The existence of evil in the world caused people to questioned the existence of the perfect God. If God was truly omnipotent, omniscient, and perfectly
good, then why would he let terrible things happen to good people? In recent news, we have witnessed many innocent deaths caused by a school
shooting, a child raped, natural disaster, and other tragic events. If God was in control of everything, does this means that he allows these bad things to
happen to humanity? This suffering seems to conflicts with the images of a perfect God. It is important for Christian to acknowledged that God did not
cause evil and that he is still the same loving God. To understand why God, allow evil and suffering among humanity, we must inspect the theodicy (
the doctrine that will explain the suffering happening in the world) or the problem of evil. It is important to be able to understand and define the
problems of evil. Second, we will reflect upon the characteristic of the Lord and his power, on his ability to prevent evil. Lastly, I will also share my
position on this particular theological problem.
Approaches on Evil
Christians often focus on the good rather than evil. Many theologies were formed to protecting God from being the victim of creating evil. According
to Mackie, "God is omnipotent and God is wholly good, and yet evil exist" (Mackie, 1955, pp.210). Mackie illustrated the contradiction between the
three approaches. He believes that if the first two position is correct then the

Is Grendel Evil?
In a world of chaos, he who lives, lives by his own laws and values. Who is to say that the death of millions is any worse or better, for that matter,
than injuring a cockroach. And in the case of an existing power in the form of God, who is presumed to be all which is good, presiding and ruling an
organized universe, why then does evil exist? The prosaic response of "without evil, there is no good" no longer holds any validity in this argument as
the admitted goal of good is to reach an existence without evil. So even if a God does exist, I think it is fair, at this point, to say that he is the
embodiment of both good and evil. And if humoring those who would answer the previous question with the response that there can be no good ... Show

That is, to say, not good or evil. It is life which shapes his beliefs and therefore life which dictates ethics, whether dependent on fate or not. Within
the society which humans have created and live in, there are certain ideals which are reinforced actively by written law and organized religion.
Since there is no evidence that any omniscient, eternal being actually organized a faith dedicated to itself and especially for the fact that no such
being exists in the society of a creature such as Grendel (with no society within which he belongs); I will say that no God has any power over
Grendel (he has not been told that one even exists). For Grendel, there is no reinforcement of which ethics, good or evil, he should abide by and
therefore he is able to make a more honest decision of which way to live. Since the world which he sought to embrace, rejected him, he is forced to
make a decision. He must choose between a self–exile in which he would live a life separate from the humans with which he shares the ground which
they walk on, or to take form as a God himself and seek punishment for those who wronged him, essentially, Hrothgar the King of the Scyldings. His
meeting with the mystical dragon is what helps to guide his decision towards the side of what is defined as evil.

Nature Of Evil
When we hear the word "evil" we associate it with villainous people throughout history and their actions, including people such as Adolf Hitler,
Osama bin Laden, and Charles Manson. Evil may also be associated with the "bad guys" in stories, the ones who want to destroy the world or the main
character but evil isn't just found in extremes as many people think; the nature of evil is that is found in people around us everyday. The definition of
evil according the Oxford dictionary is "profoundly immoral and wicked" and "harmful or tending to harm." Following that definition, wickedness can
be found in everyone to some degree, we just have to recognize it. Evi s found within the aunt and uncle Teddy in "The fall of a city" through his uncles

Teddy found interest in imagining a separate universe of Kings and Castles through the use of paper dolls and a doll house. When his uncle found
the paper dolls, he found it amusing "an eleven year old boy!" would play with dolls and doll houses and "he choked trying to restrain his laughter'
and exclaims 'paper dolls and doll houses!" referring to how boys shouldn't be playing with dolls. This shows teddy's uncle believes the sexes
should constrain to their stereotypes "assigned" by society. He even states "The next thing we know, you'll be wanting us to put skirts on you." The
fact that Teddy's uncle believes Teddy should be confined to the stereotypes of a boy and finds in funny and humiliating to enjoy things a girl
typically would displays a sexist person within. This proves the evil nature within Teddy's Uncle; an evil that believes it is "silly" and "embarrassing"
to enjoy something that is not "typical" of your gender according to culture. His evil is found in his sexism and judgment.
Along with demonstrating the thought that it is wrong to enjoy a certain interest based on your sex, Teddy's uncle reveals a disregard of Teddys
imagination and creativity. To him, his nephews interest in dolls and dollhouses was foolish and comical because those objects are "feminine," but
along with judging his interests, he didn't care to learn of Teddys imagination. Teddy repeats "They ain't paper dolls" and "They ain't paper dolls, I

Why? is a common response to most suffering, pain, loss, and problem caused by evil. An important human aspect is that upon suffering humans

Beowulf Evil Vs Evil Essay
Throughout history we have seen different kind of battles and duels, but all of this confrontations have always represented the good vs. the evil. There
has been demons, monster, and even the mind of a human itself, but good has always found a way to keep the world balanced. There has always been
different ways in which evil has been presented, but I believe that the most awful and dreadful one is the devil. The devil controls every other
dreadful creature in the world, he is the reason why evil exists. Even though we always picture monster and demons as the representation of evil,
humans can also be evil, and we can be even worse. Human beings have a certain ability to hurt other people psychologically, and it can be even
more painful than hurting someone physically. We tend to make people feel less, excluded and small, so we can have an advantage over them. This is
the same exact methodology for monsters and demons, the only difference is that they do it physically. Movies, theatre, books and comic have always
presented evil as gigantic and dreadful creatures, that always try to make humans, demigods, or even gods to feel small and impotent. But that is the

immoral evil of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden when they broke their commitment to God in the Garden of Eden by eating the apple. Another
instance of a moral evil was the act of murder committed by Cain that demonstrates that God allows moral evil to happen in society. Could it be that

Knowledge Vs Evils
Not all information is useful to all people. Some information can hinder a person's life. Depending on the person and depending on the information,
some knowledge is better left unknown. However, for others, the same information that would have hindered one persons would be helpful to theirs.
One example of this information is the knowledge that evil is in the world. For some, knowing about the evil in the world could scare them into not
living a normal and happy life. For others knowing about evil could make them aware they need to be alert to keep themselves safe from danger. So, is
it always better to know that there is evil or is it better to be oblivious to the evils of the world? In the case of the story "Little Red Cap" by Jacob and ...

Living in a world of hate, but still trying to be optimistic is what the creature is like in Frankenstein. The creature defended for himself on his own.
He was a caring and compassionate person, but people assumed from his looks that he only had evil intentions. The creature was born innocent and

that the creature tried to stick with being a nice fellow, but people were just disgusted with him and thought he was a cruel creature because of his

Evil In Macbeth
The actions of a person whom has lost their humanity can be described as, evil. Whereas a person cannot be physically evil, psychologically anything
can become evil through personal means. When someone is born, they cannot be evil; it is through actions and repercussions that decide whether or not
a person is deemed evil. Macbeth is a book of deception between trusting peers, yet even still, one deceives the other for personal gain and ends up
paying the consequences for his actions with what he values most in life. Some actions that are assumed evil, are not always what they are presumed to
be, the situation that required this action affects whether or not the person and their actions would be deemed as evil.

In Christianity, a baby born as the spawn of Satan known as the Anti–Christ may be known as pure evil to Christians. But at birth, no one would be able
to tell whether or not if it would be cold blooded killer or a soup kitchen volunteer. It is through their own "bad" actions and repercussions, that they
are able to be fully denounced evil.
One example of an "evil" character that everyone presumes is evil, would be Macbeth: a leader of the lands, served his country as a true patriot. He
was possibly not viewed as a good person by his enemies, but by his people he was viewed as a true inspirational leader. But with greed, comes loss.
Thus he was able to taint himself black and commit his sins.
Evil may not always be viewed this way however, in recent studies of the brain, researchers have found that "evil" people have amygdalae smaller

deformed or dysfunctional amygdalae commits acts of murder, it would not entirely be their fault. It is an uncontrollable factor that plays the same
role as peer pressure. The person may be able to stop these urges and actions through self–control, much

The Existence Of Evil : Evil
The existence of evil seems undeniable. As we progress through our lives and go through our everyday routines, we can see and acknowledge that
evil is all around us. By simply turning on the news, we are immediately bombarded with reports of violent murders, dangerous storms, robberies and
a new dangerous disease affecting half of the countries in the world. There is no denying that people suffer because we have experienced pain and
suffering ourselves. At one point or another in our lives, we are confronted by the existence of evil. With this confrontation, we are subjected to the
many theories of why and how evil exists. We question the very existence of evil, its creation, the cause and the purpose.
The "theodicy" problem, or the problem of evil, has been argued multiple ways over the course of many years. If God is so good and so powerful, why
does He allow evil to happen in the world? How can a loving God allow so much pain and suffering, especially among the innocent? What, if any, is
the purpose of this evil? Many arguments arise from these questions. Not only do these questions fall under a religious standpoint, but many can also
argue that they fall under a social and moral standpoint. In order to understand the above questions, we need to consider the theories of evil. Evil can
be described as an act that is immoral or wicked. Evil can also be described as an event that causes pain and suffering. It does not discriminate among

Pure Evil In Gibran's On Good And Evil
In the world today, there have been many tragic occurrences that can be considered as pure evil. One example is the Stoneman Douglas High School
shooting. On Wednesday February 14th, 2018 Nikolas Cruz was charged with seventeen counts of premeditated murder. Cruz, a former student of
Stoneman Douglas, shot and killed seventeen and wounded countless others without any provocation or reason. Even with hindsight, one cannot come
up with any conceivable reason or rationale for his action. Most of these students have probably never met him in person, let alone caused him any
harm or slight. As a result, William Golding would state that Nikolas Cruz is an innatelyevil person. He killed simply for the sake of killing.

In the poem, "On Good and Evil," Gibran argues that goodness lives within each person. Throughout the poem, Gibran presents several different
examples, such as "You are good in countless ways," (Gibran 26) and "You are good when you strive to give of yourself." (Gibran 10). In both of these
examples, he was taking the readers to a personal level, to draw his point across that goodness resides within everyone. He seemed to argue that evil
was a byproduct of circumstances; it was always created by other factors; it was never "always there" as opposed to "good." In one of the first lines of
the poems Gibran says, "For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst? Verily when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves,
and when it thirsts it drinks even of dead waters." (Gibran 3–4). He manipulates personification, "when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark
caves" to represent the idea that evil was formed when "good" changed by external forces or by necessity. For these reasons, he also made it clear
that we, the readers, have to work to maintain our inherent goodness. In other words, good will eventually turn into evil if we don't pay attention to
our environment or to allow injustice to flourish around us. For instance, in the last line of the poem, Gibran ends the poem with "For the truly good
ask not the naked, "Where is your garment?" nor the houseless, "What has befallen your house?" (Gibran 37–38 ). By ending his poem with an analogy,
Gibran is trying to leave a strong impression on us by questioning if we the readers are "good people." He bluntly states, "for truly good people ask
not, "Where is your garment?" " essentially saying that good people don't ask questions, but rather act on

Good And Evil : Good Or Evil?
Good and Evil are two sides of the same coin. If one exists then the other has to exist. Existence of evilness and goodness makes us human or inhuman
and also allows us to live in the world of free will, where we can choose and can make choices of our choice. So, for us to be a free will creature, we
have to have a choice, to choose what is good for us. If God has given us only one choice rather then the two, then this world will be robotic, there will
not be any free will and everyone will be following the same rule. Therefore, God has given us choices in be–tween goodness and evilness and it is on
us what we choose. Everyone made there on choices and there is no way, one can held God responsible of happenings, which caused by humans. It
is insane to held God responsible for everything that happens to living beings. Ivan is a theist, he does believe in God but he disagrees the way he

Good And Evil : Good Vs. Evil
Good and evil are often considered to be very different, but are actually quite similar. They are both used to describe people who exceed the
expectations of the typical citizen. Those terms describe different sides of the spectrum for the connotation within society with good typically viewed
positively by society and evil usually viewed negatively by society. People enjoy believing that the common citizen can accomplish amazing tasks to
keep their hope up. However, Socrates believes that only extraordinary people can accomplish extraordinary feats, good or evil, due to their intelligence,
nature, and skills.
Socrates believes he is an individual who has the potential to accomplish extraordinary feats because of his unique set of traits. He claims, "If they
were of any use, Crito, the many would be able to do the greatest evils, and so they would also be able to do the greatest goods" (Crito, 44d). Only
certain people have a capacity to complete enormous feats, and those people are not average citizens. Instead, they must have qualities setting them
apart from the rest of the population. Furthermore, "it is reputed at least that Socrates is distinguished from the many human beings in some way" (The
Apology, 34e). Socrates openly talks about how he is perceived (accurately) as different from average members of Athens. He continues by talking
about how other gifted citizens are different from the average Athenian by stating "A good guardian of an army is the very same man who

The Problem Of Evil And Moral Evil
Theology Research Paper
Erin Washington
RLST 160: Introduction to Theology
May 5, 2015
Many questions arise when attempts are made to explain the problem of evil and why it exists in our world when God is all–knowing, all–powerful,
and all–good. The subject of evil and why it exists is a difficult topic to find an exact answer to, especially when evil is presented in the form of nature.
Natural evil and moral evil are two different types of evil that take form and cause suffering to humans. Natural evil is "events and maladies in
nature that bring suffering upon mankind and nature." Natural evil can be difficult to explain because it does not seem likely that a tornado or
hurricane is the result of a human acting in sinful ways. Moral evil has to do with the bad things people do to cause suffering. According to Reese,
moral evil is "by the choice of human free will, an individual breaks a moral, ethical standard and causes suffering upon self, others or nature." Many
ways used to describe the problem of evil are in the form of a theodicy. A theodicy is an "attempt to offer different answers to the problem of evil." Two
of the theodicies discussed in this paper will be the Augustinian Theodicy and the Iranaean Theodicy. Both theodicies direct their explanations toward
moral evil than natural evil. First, the Augustinian theodicy and the pros and cons associated with its attempt to explain the problem of evil will be
discussed.

The Evil Of Evil People
Evil People By nature, humankind tends to be more evil than good. Even though, some people are born with kinder temperament than others, everyone
is conceived and birth in sin (Psalm 58.3). For this, in many traditions, once a woman gives birth, the baby is either baptized or blessed by his
community to welcome him into the world, and to remove him from sin. People are naturally self–centered, jealous, mean individuals who want to gain,
but not work hard. They crave violence, and would instantly cut corners wherever possible to get whatever they want, even if it means to be
consciously good from time to time. As misunderstood by many, a person does not have to commit heinous act such as to kill, to enslave or to rape–all
conscious activities, to be evil. As long as he had thought of evil, was born with sin, and is evil, his nature is evil. Babies scratch, kick, bite and give
people misery even before they are exposed to life or could tell that what they are doing is bad and painful, and people tend to show their true self
when there is no one around to judge them. As stated in the Bible, "the rod and reproof gives wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his
mother" (Prov.29:15). If a child is not consciously trained and disciplined by his elders, who learned from their elders, he could pander to his
predisposed fondness of envy, hatred and selfishness. And, "if he indulges this fondness, it would lead him into wrangling and strife, and all sense of

Evil : Evil And Evil
If we are living in a world that was created by a perfect being, why are there imperfect aspects? If this ultimate being or creator (I will say God for
purpose of this paper) is fundamentally good and moral, and is even unable to create evil, then how did evil come to be in the life we are living?
According to the problem of evil, if there is a God, there is no evil. But because there is evil in the world, the conclusion can be drawn that there is no
God (Sober). At first glance, this argument is perfectly logical. However, this claim may be reversed. For if one is indicating that there is evil in
this world, they are believing that there has been a "line" drawn somewhere to separate the good and the bad. This "line" is known by many, if I
dare say all, yet nobody actually determined what was considered bad. The reversal of the problem of evil can lead to the argument of God and evil
both existing in the same world. But, it seems as though if there were a perfect God, there would be no evil in the world, as He would not be able
to create it or He would be moral enough to see it happening and stop it. Can we really live in a world that contains evil, which was created by a
perfect God that is not capable of creating evil/capable of stopping it? This question may even lead into the following question, assuming that God
and evil do exist together: if there is a God, why is there (allowed) evil in the world? However, before we are even able to begin to understand why
there is

Evil And Evil : The Problem Of Evil In Nature
The problem of evil refers to the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil within a world governed by an omnipotent God. Flannery O'Connor
suggested that through their works of art, authors should make it their goal to "give the devil his due." This to say that, by acknowledging and
analyzing the qualities of the varying representations of evil in art, there is a movement towards answering the larger question(s). In bringing these
"devils" into existence and in giving them sentience, authors are effectively providing prospective answers for where and how evil takes shape in the
world. Authors of Modern British literature engaged with this discussion in a wide variety of techniques. Some suggested that evil was an inherent part
of human existence, and that by extension an inherent part of the individual, while others explored the idea of evil as an independent force or
manifestation capable of answering for why innocent suffer. Both Flannery O'Connor and Oscar Wilde chose the latter consideration. In The Picture of
Dorian Gray and in "The Lame Shall Enter First" outside influence(s) are held accountable for the misconducts of the given characters. For instance,
Dorian is provoked, and arguably pressured into his sins by Lord Henry Watton who instills the belief in Dorian that youth is necessary in order to
achieve happiness. Similarly, Norton is influenced by the presence of Rufus who introduces the prospect of good and evil as distinct modes of living,
and as

Evil : Evil And Evil
God created the man free, impartial to neither good nor evil, and it 's the life experience that impressed with the man as he grows up. Everyone has
an evil seed planted inside him. Only the really evil person acts on it and commits actions morally wrong. On the other side, the good person has
many ideas how to live the life having morals. Everybody has the potential to bring out whether the good side of him or the evil side. Humans should
work on doing the right, but at the same time they can be evil and have been evil at some point. Actually an evil person is one who hasn 't any
good side in him, but that really impossible, everyone has the light and dark, positive and negative inside him or her. No single person is literally
evil. People can 't judge nor demonstrate who is evil and who is not because there is no evil meter to determine. Some people act evil and think they
are good, having a different perspective about what is good. The people that kill others in the War and never end it unless they are successful, having
the believe that they are doing the right thing. Where is the good in killing innocent civilians. Definitely there 's something wrong in the concept of
being a good man having morals in life. If that is true that killing is right, then what 's evil we are afraid from to face? Some people believe that evil
is the lack of sympathy, having no mercy in the heart, which can lead afterward into murdering the innocent, destroying the lives of other human beings.

Evil Are Good And Evil : The Evils Of Evil
Some argue that evil people are powerful, while others argue that the evil are weak and should be pitied. Boethius is a Christian, who purely relies on
logic to argue his points. In the Consolation of Philosophy, Boethius argues that the wicked do evil but thatand evil is nothing; therefore, the wicked
can do nothing and should be pitied. Although
Boethius's view on God is somewhat plausible. Contrary to Boethius's view, evil is something which can wreak havoc on others' lives.
Boethius argues that we should pity the evil because they are weak. To set up his argument for why the evil should be pitied, he begins by explaining
that doing the good, which is achieving self mastery through virtue, will lead to happiness because one's virtue cannot be stolen, unlike material objects
such as money (iii.4).The desire for material objects is insatiable, but the quest for self–mastery leads to contentment.(iii.4). People are not in control of
material objects, and once they lose them, they will fall into perpetual sadness ( ii.5). Everybody wants happiness, but we established that people can
only be happy if they are good, something which the wicked cannot achieve (iv.2). This leads to the conclusion that the wicked are weak because they
are unable to seek happiness.
Boethius shows that since the wicked desire to attain the good, but are too weak, they have to resort to using a lesser good, evil (iv.2). However,
since only the ultimate power, virtue, can lead to happiness, these earthly powers are not actually powerful at all. In fact, evil is nothing because God
cannot do evil, and since God is omnipotent, the power of doing evil is not real (iv.3). [good] People who do evil are not even human because they
cannot seek the purpose of humans, which is self–mastery, and they are beasts instead as they lead their lives by their desires (iv.3). They cannot seek
the reward of eternal happiness, and will be stuck with sadness and weakness until they reform forever. Therefore, the wicked are similar to sick
patients who are too weak to recover and should be pitied because instead of being treated, they are harshly rebuked by lawyers and judges for their
evil actions (iv.4).
Boethius mentions that evil is nothing, but clearly

Evil And Evil In Macbeth
Evil is a common theme in most literature. An almost unstoppable force that seeks out the deepest desires in people and uses their ambition against
them with avidity, while destroying natural order in the process. As evil appear throughout a story, trouble is brought along with chaos and mischief
that pushes the characters to follow the path set for them by these forces. In William Shakespeare's play Macbeth, evil is the driving force that leads the
play forward, and the main character Macbeth to his demise. The Three Witches have a significant role that determines the advancement of the play, the
mood and setting, and symbolize many important ideas that pull the moral of the play together.
The witches have a significant role in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These 'midnight hags' are connected closely with the setting of the play. They are often found on the heath, a dry patch of land void of vegetation and a
scene of death and destruction, and despite the heath being a mark of the supernatural presence in the play, unnatural events occur outside of the field
such as the events on the night of King Duncan's murder:
"The night has been unruly: where we lay, our chimneys were blown down; and, as they say, lamentings heard i'th'air; strange screams of death, and,
prophesying with accents terrible of dire combustion, and confus'd events."
Witchcraft is also contributes to the mood due to the presence of the supernatural and the wicked. Spellcasting, a defining feature of witchcraft, is used
throughout the play. The apparitions are created with a 'charm of powerful trouble', and were used to lead Macbeth further down the path towards his
demise. The constant use of witchcraft is a key contributor to the overall atmosphere. The sisters are a reflection of Macbeth's conscience. Upon the
heath on their first encounter, Macbeth shows interest in their prophecies and urges them to 'tell [him] more'. Macbeth is intrigued by the Witches
because what they said matched what he was thinking. For a while he had been longing for something greater and the sisters were able say what
Macbeth wanted to hear. The

Evil : The Problem Of Evil
According to theism, God is: "that being which no greater is possible, and he is omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent. By having a God who
only desires good, and us living in a world where evil exists, it is logically impossible and that is what created the problem of evil.
Problem of Evil: There are two sides of the problem of evil which are the logical and evidential arguments. The logical side states that as long as evil
and suffering exists in this world there is no God. That does not only contradict with the idea of God being "all–good", but also him being
"all–knowing" and "all–powerful" as well. Because, if God only desires good, then how evil was formed unless God was evil. If not, then if God has all
knowledge, he should know evil exists and then use his "power" to put an end to it. However, evil can support the idea of the existence of God at the
same time specially that it was discussed in most theist religions. The most important concept in those religions is that if evil did not exist, then good
would not have existed. If humans could not desire good and evil, then humans will lose our free will. With this in mind, if God created humans as
rational beings, then he must create free will in order for humans to have true thoughts and emotions. Otherwise, humans will be considered irrational.
So, the logical side mostly does not seem to work, and that is where atheists suggested the idea of the evidential side of the problem of evil. The
evidential side

Evil Vs. Good And Evil
Evil vs. Good–Which One Shall Gain Control?
Good and evil are a contradiction that works together. What I mean by this
statement is that although good and evil are two very separate things, they could not exist
without each other. Good is anything of which can be morally right. Evil is anything of
profound wickedness. They are very different, aren't they? Now, read a newspaper, listen
to a story, or turn on the news. It is not definite, but you most likely will hear about an
occurrence that caused someone harm. Nowadays, people mostly hear about slashing in
the streets, kidnappings, murders, and so many more gruesome things. These are all
examples of evil. Now, listen some more. In some cases, there are heroes, who protect
people from these tragic events. And, since heroes are doing good, while criminals are
doing bad, they sort of are working together.
I am not at all saying that bad things are really considered something we need in
our lives. For example, wouldn't it be so much better for kids to walk to school not in
fear that because they live in a shady neighborhood, they might get hurt? Or wouldn't we
all be happy if robbers did not exist and we would not have to lock almost everything we
own? Well, we would be happier, but there is very little way to stop evil, even in one
city! There is a population of approximately seven billion people in the world, so even
one city would be insanely difficult to protect. The truth is, there are so

Problem Of Evil : The Problem Of Evil
The Problem of Evil Does the problem of evil pose a challenge for theists and the existence of God? The problem of evil argues that there is so much
suffering in the world that an all–good and all powerful God would not allow such suffering to exist. Therefore, a God with those characteristics does
not exist. Unless the suffering is necessary for an adequate reason. Some people argue that suffering is necessary for there to be good and for us to
able to understand what good is. In this paper, I will argue that suffering does not need to exist in order for good to exist, because the existence of
good does not depend on suffering. I will then argue that good and suffering are not logical opposites. Finally, I will conclude that sinceevil is not
justified, then the God that we defined does not exist. When we are discussing the problem of evil, we are specifically discussing a God that is
omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good. A God that is perfectly good would not allow suffering to exist, and any minute amount of suffering that
exists disproves God's existence. Unless, the suffering is justified with an adequate reason. However, even then there seems to be large amounts of
evil in the world that seems unnecessary for any good reason. By evil and suffering I mean death, pain, and disease. I will be using these terms
interchangeably. In the problem of evil, many arguments are placed in order to find a justification for the evil that exists. However,

Examples Of Man By Nature Is Evil And Evil
Man by nature is evil and sinner. If we take a look with our history or past, mankind committed a lot of evil acts. There were many manifestations
that man by nature is evil. For example, the occurrence of war which slayed numerous innocent individuals, the existence of crime and nefarious
activities. Look around you. Look at every people. Look beyond what our eyes can see. What can we picture out? Their heart that is full of greed,
full of lies and full of the desires to take revenge. That is how man live. We lived life with full of sins because man is born a sinner. Mankind in this
day and age constantly has wars to keep funding themselves. We rape, we kill each other with guns, and we are completely selfish. We usehuman
beings as property or the so called "human trafficking", we have the resources necessary to help everyone in the world, but we choose to follow our
own selfish needs instead. There is confusion and lies everywhere, especially on the television to get another fellow human being to think the same
way and follow along. Mankind treats mankind like cattle or animals. And I arrived with my belief that in order to survive we would be willing to

Evil: The Definition Of Evil
Evil can be describes as a thing that is morally bad, causing negative consequences, destruction, hate or harm. Although the basic definition of evil
doesn't portray what evil is truly. It can be known through a lifetime of experiences. Many religions, societies, races and genders perceive evil in
myriad ways. (Aznwho, 2005)
Evil is when someone cause pain deliberately. Pain caused unintentionally shan't be considered evil. Evil has always been unavoidable, it has its roots
and reasons to persist in the world we inhabit. The act of a person being hit by the ball on a homerun at a baseball game isn't evil. The definition of
good remains incomplete if there wasn't any evil to contradict the good. As just can't be defined without unjust, darkness ... Show more content on

Dichotomy Of Evil And Evil In Voltaire's Candide
Dualism exists in human nature. Voltaire, an Enlightenment writer explores the tendency of humans to seek out good, but also the acts of evil that
continue to happen. Voltaire catalogs a diverse cast of flawed characters in his signature satire Candide. Many of these characters contrast other
characters in different aspects. These character foils highlight the weaknesses and limited strengths of its counterpart. These flaws are inevitably a
human characteristic that corrupt humanity but also essential in development. By intertwining vice and virtue within characters, Voltaireintones that
humans are all intrinsically flawed, but the distinction between the antagonistic dichotomy of evil and good is ambiguous.
First, our protagonist Candide and his valet Cacambo serve as appropriate examples: a naive optimist and a worldly pragmatist. When Candide finds
the monkey lovers appalling and unusual, Cacambo does not "see anything odd about their passion" (Voltaire 49). Exposed by the cruelties of the real
world, Cacambo's sharp wits allow him to take control of a situation and suffer less adversities than other characters. Inexperienced and innocent,
Candide can only think one dimensionally; instead of thinking and acting for himself, Candide surrounds himself with people who do the decision
making for him. Only because of the wits and decisions of Cacambo, Old Woman, and Martin is he able to survive until the end of the novel. Voltaire
contrasts Cacambo's wisdom with Candide's

Good Vs. Evil : Good And Evil
As Martin Luther said, "Good works do not make a good man, but a good man does good works; evil works do not make a wicked man, but a
wicked man does evil works" (On Christian Library). The media is constantly flooded with a consistent stream of negativity. Currently in our small
world we are fighting wars, preventing nuclear fallouts, and even protecting citizens from terrorist attacks. Notice that all of these instances share one
common type of conflict: man versus man. The most common misconception is the difference between good and bad. What makes someone good;
what makes someone bad? To some extent, there is good and bad in every person. Lead singer of the rock band The Animals, Eric Burdon, agrees.
Burdon was quoted once saying, "Inside each of us, there is the seed of both good and evil. It's a constant struggle as to which one will win. And one
cannot exist without the other" (BrainyQuote). The fact of the matter is the following: there are both good and evil in the world, but there is more than
just one determining factor on whether a person or thing is good or bad. The most common associated word with good is perfect. Many people
expect that if someone has good grades in school, a good family life, and a healthy social life that their life must be perfect. However, it could mean
the quite opposite. What determines a healthy social life when no two people make the same relationships with others? How can you judge a good
family life other than the fact they may

As Marcus Singer puts it "'evil' ... is the defeat possible term of opprobrium believable" (Singer 2004, 185). Since the near{5} concept of evil entangle
moral condemnation, it is suitably ascribed only to moral agents and their actions. For instance, if only human beings are virtuous agents, then only
human beings can perform evil actions. Evil in this narrower sense is more often meant when the term 'perverse' is used in contemporaneous moral,
political, and constitutional contexts. This entrance will focus on wicked in this narrower sensation. The entry will not discuss wicked in the ample

Evil: The Logical Problem Of Evil
The logical problem of evil (double check if name attached like evidential problem) and William Rowe's evidential argument from evil, show that a
rational belief in God is unfeasible due to the evil that exists in the world. The problem of evil is acknowledging the possibility that God, an
omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent being is not actually, all good, all knowing and all powerful. (maybe delete/change highlighted part). If evil
exists then how can an omni–natured being exist? (find reference). There are numerous theodicies that argue otherwise, for example, the free will

Evil : Evil And Evil
It is with no surprise that evil is lurking all around us. We live in a world that is unpredictable and dangerous. There are two categories of evil. The
first is natural evil, which focuses on nature. The second is moral evil, which focuses on harm among others. The problem of evil is known to object
the existence of God. Many atheists will say that if God is so good, then why do bad things happen to good people? Not to mention why did God
create a bad world? We are often left speechless by the acts done onto others, whether it's through naturalevil or moral evil. The question is why does
evil exist and why does God allow evil to exist? The problem of evil challenges our beliefs and makes us think twice about humanity and God. I intend
to evaluate the problem of evil through the following theories, The Free Will Argument, Evil as a Privation ofGood and Evil as Therapy.
Let's take a look at the Free Will Defense in relation to evil. God created us with the intention to be able to discover and know Him. His aim was to
develop a bond of love in faith and obedience to Him. In order to accomplish this, we must be genuinely free to choose how we want to bond with
God. The downfall of this free will is it allows the presence of good and evil to intermingle. God cannot place limitations or intervene on our free
will, as it then would limit our freedom. Richard Swinburne was in favor of the Free Will Defense. Swinburne (2009) stated that, "A person who had

Evil And Evil : The Problem Of Evil
The problem of evil is the notion that, how can an all good, powerful, loving God exists when evil seems to exist also. The problem of evil also
gives way to the notion that if hell exists then God must be evil for sending anyone there.I believe hell exists in light of the idea that God is holy.
The larger is how anyone can go to heaven. When I look out into the world it does not take long for me to realize that we are all different in many
different ways.
We all grow up in many different societies and cultures that have shaped the way we think and act. They way behave reflects the culture we grew up
in, someone from Philly will act different than a person from Kentucky, along with someone from Florida. We grow up with a different perspective of
what is right and wrong, what is good and bad. Some of us grew up in religious households, going to church every Sunday and celebrating every
holiday under the sun. Others grow up in non–religious households that would rather not spend time worrying about the meaning of God. The point i'm
trying to make is that we are all different in thousands of ways. We never chose to be this way. What did we choose though? We did not choose
when we were born. We did not choose what family, culture, or religion we were born into. We did not choose the gifts and talents that we were born
with. Some of the uncontrollable experiences in our lives have shaped the way we think and act today. We are all different and this idea is at the heart of

Evil In The Bell Jar

  • 1. Evil In The Bell Jar Evil can be defined as being "profoundly immoral and wicked" (Oxford Dictionaries, 2017). In my texts, evil is displayed in many forms. In Disgrace, David Lurie 's evil is caused by his distorted viewpoints and in The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, all three cases are as a result of poverty. In The Bell Jar, Esther 'sevil suicidal attempts are caused by her narcissistic insanity; in The Crow, evil is an offset of Eric 's traumatic experience and need for revenge; and in Fargo, evil arises as a result of bullying. Each character mentioned provides a different way of expressing the evil within them. The above definition gives us a basis in determining what research has revealed as evil's two root causes. The first is circumstantial; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soraya is a prostitute, whom David sees every Thursday afternoon. David sees her merely as a beautiful object that he can make use of by stating that her 'beauty does not belong to her alone" (Coetzee, 2009). She is a 2D persona for David, resulting in their sex being "lengthy, abstract and rather dry" (Coetzee, 2009) and Soraya avoids David as soon as he begins to pry into her personal life. Melanie Isaacs, on the other hand, is not a prostitute but a student of David 's, who attracts David due to her purity and looks. David is unable to admit that he raped Melanie, trying to justify his actions by saying that "she does not resist" (Coetzee, 2009) and that he is merely acting as a "servant of Eros" (Coetzee, 2009). We are able to see how evil David is in the way that he never feels shame for his wrongdoings, despite being disgraced (publically shamed and being dismissed by the university). David claims that he was "enriched by the experience" (Coetzee, 2009) of raping Melanie and in court says "I have said the words to you" (Coetzee, 2009) showing the futility of the apology. The root of David 's evilness is not deeply explored in the novel, but can be linked to his skewed mindset that women were made as an appendage to man and to be used by man. David 's deep passion for poetry of the Romantic Era, has led him to want to follow in the footsteps of his role model, Byron, who was known to have been a womanizer, having ... • 2. Evil Revivalists And Evil Sceptics In philosophy, there are two groups of people who debate the concept of evil, Evil Revivalists and Evil Sceptics. Evil Revivalists are all about evil being a useful term in today's society. They argue the word "evil" is the only concept we can use for the worst of the worst. They also say that only by facing the evil in our lives can we prevent it. This theory helps society to focus our limited energy and resources when describing evil and helps us to respond better to evil. The Evil Sceptics on the other hand think evil is concept that is too extreme and only hinders our thinking about bad events. They argue that evil is often associated with the supernatural and lacks explanatory power. They also say that it is way too harmful a concept as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Problem of Evil 1.(1) According to Buddhist beliefs, there is neither a soul nor an essential self. Karma is understood as good or bad intentional actions performed in the mind, body, and speech. Good intentions will lead to good consequences and bad intentions will lead to bad consequences. Therefore, good karma is better than bad karma, but no karma is better than good karma. The intentions performed in a small scale will affect a person's life on a large scale. Each person is the cause of what he or she reaps in the world. The individual is responsible for his or her own karmic results. The way in which they think, the physical action that they perform, and what they say further affect karmic intentions and results. By knowing this, a person can change his or her behavior in an attempt to achieve good karmic results. In Buddhist Literature, there is a list of ten meritorious deeds:" generosity, morality, meditation, reverence, service, transference of merit, rejoicing in others' merit, hearing the doctrine, teaching the doctrine, and straightening one's views." By completing at least one of the ten meritorious deeds, a person can experience good karma. For instance, if we are kind and help someone in need of help, whether or not we know him or her, then that is good karma. If someone is sick or injured and we offer them help to get better, then that is good karma. On the other hand, if we curse because we miss the bus or the bus is late to bring us to school or work, then this is bad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Lady Macbeth Is Not Evil According to William Penn, "A misery is not to be measured from the nature of the evil, but from the temper of the sufferer." There are people who are willing to seek their own desires even if they must attempt diabolical plans to pursue them. Some people can carry on with their evil deeds with satisfaction, while others will regret their own decisions coming into effect. In the play, Macbeth, evil deeds had to be met with the main characters in order to achieve their goals for royalty. Despite their success in gaining their power, there were some characters who could not handle the ongoing immorality that lurked within them from the start. The main villain, Lady Macbeth, was portrayed as a cruel person, but her behaviors defined her otherwise. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her paranoia has come to a point where she suffered from mental illness. This issue was noticed as she was caught sleep–walking while rubbing her hands and commanding her evidence to be forgotten, saying, "Out damned spot! ... What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to accompt?" (V, I, 32, 35). Her mental illness proved herguilt knowing she cannot get the memories of her evil plan out of her head. Unlike a vile person, who would rather ignore their crimes and guilt, she kept thinking about it in a worried matter. Her mentality eventually led to sorrow. Macbeth disapproved her feelings about the misdeed as he ordered the doctor to "Pluck from the memory of rooted sorrow / Raze out the written troubles of the brain" (V, iii, 41–42). His statement about his wife's illness insisted that she was distracted by her remorse. The paranoia she faced made her reveal her repentance and made her less ambitious for royalty. Her emotions over–brimmed her mind and diverted her behaviors negatively. These behaviors worried the doctor when he prayed, "Remove from her the means of all annoyance / And still keep eyes upon her" (V, I, 72–73). His assumption of Lady Macbeth taking her own life foreshadowed her tragic death, proving once again that her guilty conscience made her snap instead of letting her forget her evil deed. She could no longer handle the ongoing thoughts that haunted her since the crime despite her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Evil: The Problem Of Evil In Western Philosophy The Problem of Evil in Philosophy What is the classic "problem of evil" in the Western philosophical/theological tradition (the "trilemma")? The problem of evil is the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil with that of a deity who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent. The trilemma was stated by the Greek philosopher Epicurus during antiquity and was restated during the modern period by David Hume. Epicurus poses a trilemma in order to refute the notion of an omnipotent and omnibenevolent God. He first argues that if God is unable to prevent evil, he is not omnipotent. If, alternatively, God is not willing to prevent evil, he is not good. How then, Epicurus asks, can evil exists if God is both willing and able to prevent evil? Epicurus' trilemma exposes a logical contradiction in the Judeo–Christian conception of God and his creation of the world. He attempts to force his opponents to either admit that God is not omnipotent or not omnibenevolent. In order to escapes this trilemma, one would either have to deny the existence of evil in the world or come up with an explanation for how evil can exist when God is both willing and able to prevent such evil. What does Immanuel Kant mean by "radical evil"? Radical evil refers to a source of misbehavior that is caused by unfaithfulness, hypocrisy, and delusion in a person who aims to be moral or good. Kant believes that this unfaithfulness stems from a "perversity of heart" rather than a desire to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Evil Is Good Or Evil? Evil is the privation of goodness; in other words, evil is goodness spoiled. You can have good without evil, but you cannot have evil without good. There are forces of good and evil constantly working against each other in this world. Although it may seem as if evil has won sometimes, good will always prevail in the end. In Genesis 1–2, we can read that God created all things and called them "good." Evil, or sin, is inescapable for humanity. We were born with a sin nature, and God loves us and has given everyone a chance for redemption anyways. God has and always will conquer sin in the end, but for now, it is our choice to side with either evil or good. God created us in his image, but he does not want to hold absolute control over us. Part of his promise to us is our power of free will. Of course, God only wants what is best for his children, but he cannot live our lives for us. Just like an earthly mother or father loves their child with all their heart and only wants the best for them all their lives. But, there always comes a day when they must let their child go and experience life on their own and make their own decisions. And that is exactly what God has done for us; he has let us go, only in hopes that we will make the right decisions and return to him. God's love for us is unconditional and unwavering, no matter what we may do to disappoint and betray him. There are two types of evil; natural and moral. Moral evil is what people do to people, whereas natural evil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Evil: Definition Of Physical And Moral Evil Physical and Moral Evil To understand physical and moral evil, people must first look at the existence of evil itself. Many people ask why there is evil in the world. They wonder how an all–merciful God and evil can coexist. The dictionary definition of evil is: "profoundly immoral and malevolent", but according to the catholic faith, evil is anything that is antithetical to the will of God. Physical evil, also called natural evil, is any event that does not occur as a result of humans choices. Examples of physical evils would be: natural disasters, diseases, and any act of God. There are many arguments to why we have physical evil. One theory is that it is necessary for life on our world to exist. All of the natural events that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Existence Of Evil And Evil The existence of evil in the world caused people to questioned the existence of the perfect God. If God was truly omnipotent, omniscient, and perfectly good, then why would he let terrible things happen to good people? In recent news, we have witnessed many innocent deaths caused by a school shooting, a child raped, natural disaster, and other tragic events. If God was in control of everything, does this means that he allows these bad things to happen to humanity? This suffering seems to conflicts with the images of a perfect God. It is important for Christian to acknowledged that God did not cause evil and that he is still the same loving God. To understand why God, allow evil and suffering among humanity, we must inspect the theodicy ( the doctrine that will explain the suffering happening in the world) or the problem of evil. It is important to be able to understand and define the problems of evil. Second, we will reflect upon the characteristic of the Lord and his power, on his ability to prevent evil. Lastly, I will also share my position on this particular theological problem. Approaches on Evil Christians often focus on the good rather than evil. Many theologies were formed to protecting God from being the victim of creating evil. According to Mackie, "God is omnipotent and God is wholly good, and yet evil exist" (Mackie, 1955, pp.210). Mackie illustrated the contradiction between the three approaches. He believes that if the first two position is correct then the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Is Grendel Evil? In a world of chaos, he who lives, lives by his own laws and values. Who is to say that the death of millions is any worse or better, for that matter, than injuring a cockroach. And in the case of an existing power in the form of God, who is presumed to be all which is good, presiding and ruling an organized universe, why then does evil exist? The prosaic response of "without evil, there is no good" no longer holds any validity in this argument as the admitted goal of good is to reach an existence without evil. So even if a God does exist, I think it is fair, at this point, to say that he is the embodiment of both good and evil. And if humoring those who would answer the previous question with the response that there can be no good ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is, to say, not good or evil. It is life which shapes his beliefs and therefore life which dictates ethics, whether dependent on fate or not. Within the society which humans have created and live in, there are certain ideals which are reinforced actively by written law and organized religion. Since there is no evidence that any omniscient, eternal being actually organized a faith dedicated to itself and especially for the fact that no such being exists in the society of a creature such as Grendel (with no society within which he belongs); I will say that no God has any power over Grendel (he has not been told that one even exists). For Grendel, there is no reinforcement of which ethics, good or evil, he should abide by and therefore he is able to make a more honest decision of which way to live. Since the world which he sought to embrace, rejected him, he is forced to make a decision. He must choose between a self–exile in which he would live a life separate from the humans with which he shares the ground which they walk on, or to take form as a God himself and seek punishment for those who wronged him, essentially, Hrothgar the King of the Scyldings. His meeting with the mystical dragon is what helps to guide his decision towards the side of what is defined as evil. The dragon is Grendel's guide to the gateway of evil beliefs and also ... • 10. Nature Of Evil When we hear the word "evil" we associate it with villainous people throughout history and their actions, including people such as Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, and Charles Manson. Evil may also be associated with the "bad guys" in stories, the ones who want to destroy the world or the main character but evil isn't just found in extremes as many people think; the nature of evil is that is found in people around us everyday. The definition of evil according the Oxford dictionary is "profoundly immoral and wicked" and "harmful or tending to harm." Following that definition, wickedness can be found in everyone to some degree, we just have to recognize it. Evi s found within the aunt and uncle Teddy in "The fall of a city" through his uncles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Teddy found interest in imagining a separate universe of Kings and Castles through the use of paper dolls and a doll house. When his uncle found the paper dolls, he found it amusing "an eleven year old boy!" would play with dolls and doll houses and "he choked trying to restrain his laughter' and exclaims 'paper dolls and doll houses!" referring to how boys shouldn't be playing with dolls. This shows teddy's uncle believes the sexes should constrain to their stereotypes "assigned" by society. He even states "The next thing we know, you'll be wanting us to put skirts on you." The fact that Teddy's uncle believes Teddy should be confined to the stereotypes of a boy and finds in funny and humiliating to enjoy things a girl typically would displays a sexist person within. This proves the evil nature within Teddy's Uncle; an evil that believes it is "silly" and "embarrassing" to enjoy something that is not "typical" of your gender according to culture. His evil is found in his sexism and judgment. Along with demonstrating the thought that it is wrong to enjoy a certain interest based on your sex, Teddy's uncle reveals a disregard of Teddys imagination and creativity. To him, his nephews interest in dolls and dollhouses was foolish and comical because those objects are "feminine," but along with judging his interests, he didn't care to learn of Teddys imagination. • 11. Evil Vs Evil Why? is a common response to most suffering, pain, loss, and problem caused by evil. An important human aspect is that upon suffering humans always demand a response which perfectly answers this major problem of evil. However, one needs to understand that God chose not to give an answer to every question one may have. All this been said, Specific Evil as the Result of Specific Sins, God as the Victim of Evil, and The Life Hereafter are extremely important themes to answer not in a perfect way the problem of: Why God allows evil to exist in the world? An important question that cannot be ignored is how the Christian faith handles faith through suffering with friend, neighbors, family members and society as a whole. It is due to faith, love, ... • 12. Beowulf Evil Vs Evil Essay Throughout history we have seen different kind of battles and duels, but all of this confrontations have always represented the good vs. the evil. There has been demons, monster, and even the mind of a human itself, but good has always found a way to keep the world balanced. There has always been different ways in which evil has been presented, but I believe that the most awful and dreadful one is the devil. The devil controls every other dreadful creature in the world, he is the reason why evil exists. Even though we always picture monster and demons as the representation of evil, humans can also be evil, and we can be even worse. Human beings have a certain ability to hurt other people psychologically, and it can be even more painful than hurting someone physically. We tend to make people feel less, excluded and small, so we can have an advantage over them. This is the same exact methodology for monsters and demons, the only difference is that they do it physically. An illustration presented in this paper of the immoral evil of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden when they broke their commitment to God in the Garden of Eden by eating the apple. Another instance of a moral evil was the act of murder committed by Cain that demonstrates that God allows moral evil to happen in society. Depending on the person and depending on the information, some knowledge is better left unknown. However, for others, the same information that would have hindered one persons would be helpful to theirs. One example of this information is the knowledge that evil is in the world. For some, knowing about the evil in the world could scare them into not living a normal and happy life. For others knowing about evil could make them aware they need to be alert to keep themselves safe from danger. So, is it always better to know that there is evil or is it better to be oblivious to the evils of the world? In the case of the story "Little Red Cap" by Jacob and ... The creature defended for himself on his own. He was a caring and compassionate person, but people assumed from his looks that he only had evil intentions. The creature was born innocent and unaware of the evils of the world, but his looks cursed him for tragedy. By looking at any evidence that he was born neutral it will prove if the creature was made evil or born evil. When the creature was first created he was unable to defy who he was, but when you are born, you are born neutral. You learn right and wrong from your guardian. The creature never had any guidance because his own father disowned him. Even after that the creature tried to stick with being a nice fellow, but people were just disgusted with him and thought he was a cruel creature because of his appearance. "He turned on hearing a noise, and perceiving me, shriekeed loudly, and quitting the hut, ran across the fields with a speed of which is debilitated form hardly appeared capable" (90). The creature tried to get over this world of pain by intriguing himself with a small family. The creature decided to help the family out by lending an invisible hand."When I returned, as often as it was necessary, I cleared their path from the snow and preformed those offices that I had seen done by Felix" (99). Unfortunately the DeLacey family did not respond so nicely to the creature after all he had done for them after the creature exposed himself to the family."Who can describe their horror and consternation on beholding me? Agatha fainted, and Safie, unable to attend to her friend, rushed out of the cottage. Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father, to whose knees I clung; in a transport of fury, he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick" (119). The one thing that pushed the creature over was when he tried to save a girl from drowning."This was the reward of my benevolence! I had saved a human being from destruction, and as a recompense I now writhed under the miserable pain of a wound which shattered the flesh and bone" (126) . Whereas a person cannot be physically evil, psychologically anything can become evil through personal means. When someone is born, they cannot be evil; it is through actions and repercussions that decide whether or not a person is deemed evil. Macbeth is a book of deception between trusting peers, yet even still, one deceives the other for personal gain and ends up paying the consequences for his actions with what he values most in life. Some actions that are assumed evil, are not always what they are presumed to be, the situation that required this action affects whether or not the person and their actions would be deemed as evil. One example of an "evil" character that everyone presumes is evil, would be Macbeth: a leader of the lands, served his country as a true patriot. He was possibly not viewed as a good person by his enemies, but by his people he was viewed as a true inspirational leader. But with greed, comes loss. Thus he was able to taint himself black and commit his sins. Evil may not always be viewed this way however, in recent studies of the brain, researchers have found that "evil" people have amygdalae smaller than the average person or ones that don't function at all. As we progress through our lives and go through our everyday routines, we can see and acknowledge that evil is all around us. By simply turning on the news, we are immediately bombarded with reports of violent murders, dangerous storms, robberies and a new dangerous disease affecting half of the countries in the world. There is no denying that people suffer because we have experienced pain and suffering ourselves. At one point or another in our lives, we are confronted by the existence of evil. With this confrontation, we are subjected to the many theories of why and how evil exists. We question the very existence of evil, its creation, the cause and the purpose. The "theodicy" problem, or the problem of evil, has been argued multiple ways over the course of many years. If God is so good and so powerful, why does He allow evil to happen in the world? How can a loving God allow so much pain and suffering, especially among the innocent? What, if any, is the purpose of this evil? Many arguments arise from these questions. Not only do these questions fall under a religious standpoint, but many can also argue that they fall under a social and moral standpoint. In order to understand the above questions, we need to consider the theories of evil. Evil can be described as an act that is immoral or wicked. Evil can also be described as an event that causes pain and suffering. It does not discriminate among ethnicity, gender, religious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Pure Evil In Gibran's On Good And Evil In the world today, there have been many tragic occurrences that can be considered as pure evil. One example is the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. On Wednesday February 14th, 2018 Nikolas Cruz was charged with seventeen counts of premeditated murder. Cruz, a former student of Stoneman Douglas, shot and killed seventeen and wounded countless others without any provocation or reason. Even with hindsight, one cannot come up with any conceivable reason or rationale for his action. Most of these students have probably never met him in person, let alone caused him any harm or slight. As a result, William Golding would state that Nikolas Cruz is an innatelyevil person. He killed simply for the sake of killing. Conversely, Gibran, who is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the poem, "On Good and Evil," Gibran argues that goodness lives within each person. Throughout the poem, Gibran presents several different examples, such as "You are good in countless ways," (Gibran 26) and "You are good when you strive to give of yourself." (Gibran 10). In both of these examples, he was taking the readers to a personal level, to draw his point across that goodness resides within everyone. He seemed to argue that evil was a byproduct of circumstances; it was always created by other factors; it was never "always there" as opposed to "good." In one of the first lines of the poems Gibran says, "For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst? Verily when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts it drinks even of dead waters." (Gibran 3–4). He manipulates personification, "when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves" to represent the idea that evil was formed when "good" changed by external forces or by necessity. For these reasons, he also made it clear that we, the readers, have to work to maintain our inherent goodness. In other words, good will eventually turn into evil if we don't pay attention to our environment or to allow injustice to flourish around us. For instance, in the last line of the poem, Gibran ends the poem with "For the truly good ask not the naked, "Where is your garment?" nor the houseless, "What has befallen your house?" (Gibran 37–38 ). By ending his poem with an analogy, Gibran is trying to leave a strong impression on us by questioning if we the readers are "good people." He bluntly states, "for truly good people ask not, "Where is your garment?" " essentially saying that good people don't ask questions, but rather act on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Good And Evil : Good Or Evil? Good and Evil are two sides of the same coin. If one exists then the other has to exist. Existence of evilness and goodness makes us human or inhuman and also allows us to live in the world of free will, where we can choose and can make choices of our choice. So, for us to be a free will creature, we have to have a choice, to choose what is good for us. If God has given us only one choice rather then the two, then this world will be robotic, there will not be any free will and everyone will be following the same rule. Therefore, God has given us choices in be–tween goodness and evilness and it is on us what we choose. Everyone made there on choices and there is no way, one can held God responsible of happenings, which caused by humans. It is insane to held God responsible for everything that happens to living beings. Ivan is a theist, he does believe in God but he disagrees the way he administers this world. They are both used to describe people who exceed the expectations of the typical citizen. Those terms describe different sides of the spectrum for the connotation within society with good typically viewed positively by society and evil usually viewed negatively by society. People enjoy believing that the common citizen can accomplish amazing tasks to keep their hope up. However, Socrates believes that only extraordinary people can accomplish extraordinary feats, good or evil, due to their intelligence, nature, and skills. Socrates believes he is an individual who has the potential to accomplish extraordinary feats because of his unique set of traits. He claims, "If they were of any use, Crito, the many would be able to do the greatest evils, and so they would also be able to do the greatest goods" (Crito, 44d). Only certain people have a capacity to complete enormous feats, and those people are not average citizens. Instead, they must have qualities setting them apart from the rest of the population. Furthermore, "it is reputed at least that Socrates is distinguished from the many human beings in some way" (The Apology, 34e). • 21. Fozen Evil Vs Evil What is the violation of a moral code, the opposite of good, and the ultimate definition of everything bad? Evil has several clear–cut definitions scattered throughout dictionaries. In reality, evil is a theme so prevalent in all spheres of life, it has near limitless forms. The word evil has come to symbolize a divide between the good samaritan and the callous monster. Evil is used as a blanket statement to describe anything harmful to life or existence. Poachers destroying the life of endangered wildlife for profit can be called evil. The callous monster that is driven by hatred and a thirst for violence is evil. Ideas concerning evil have been strung along through the schools of theology, the minds of society, and the theories of philosophy throughout the history of mankind. Evil can come in many different forms, even in a person you love. The film Frozen has a great example of this kind of evil. Ana falls for a seemingly nice boy named Hans, Prince Hans. • 22. The Problem Of Evil And Moral Evil Theology Research Paper Erin Washington RLST 160: Introduction to Theology May 5, 2015 Many questions arise when attempts are made to explain the problem of evil and why it exists in our world when God is all–knowing, all–powerful, and all–good. The subject of evil and why it exists is a difficult topic to find an exact answer to, especially when evil is presented in the form of nature. Natural evil and moral evil are two different types of evil that take form and cause suffering to humans. Natural evil is "events and maladies in nature that bring suffering upon mankind and nature." Natural evil can be difficult to explain because it does not seem likely that a tornado or hurricane is the result of a human acting in sinful ways. Moral evil has to do with the bad things people do to cause suffering. According to Reese, moral evil is "by the choice of human free will, an individual breaks a moral, ethical standard and causes suffering upon self, others or nature." Many ways used to describe the problem of evil are in the form of a theodicy. A theodicy is an "attempt to offer different answers to the problem of evil." Two of the theodicies discussed in this paper will be the Augustinian Theodicy and the Iranaean Theodicy. Both theodicies direct their explanations toward moral evil than natural evil. First, the Augustinian theodicy and the pros and cons associated with its attempt to explain the problem of evil will be discussed. The problem of evil and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. The Evil Of Evil People Evil People By nature, humankind tends to be more evil than good. Even though, some people are born with kinder temperament than others, everyone is conceived and birth in sin (Psalm 58.3). For this, in many traditions, once a woman gives birth, the baby is either baptized or blessed by his community to welcome him into the world, and to remove him from sin. People are naturally self–centered, jealous, mean individuals who want to gain, but not work hard. They crave violence, and would instantly cut corners wherever possible to get whatever they want, even if it means to be consciously good from time to time. As misunderstood by many, a person does not have to commit heinous act such as to kill, to enslave or to rape–all conscious activities, to be evil. As long as he had thought of evil, was born with sin, and is evil, his nature is evil. Babies scratch, kick, bite and give people misery even before they are exposed to life or could tell that what they are doing is bad and painful, and people tend to show their true self when there is no one around to judge them. As stated in the Bible, "the rod and reproof gives wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother" (Prov.29:15). If a child is not consciously trained and disciplined by his elders, who learned from their elders, he could pander to his predisposed fondness of envy, hatred and selfishness. • 24. Evil : Evil And Evil If we are living in a world that was created by a perfect being, why are there imperfect aspects? If this ultimate being or creator (I will say God for purpose of this paper) is fundamentally good and moral, and is even unable to create evil, then how did evil come to be in the life we are living? According to the problem of evil, if there is a God, there is no evil. But because there is evil in the world, the conclusion can be drawn that there is no God (Sober). At first glance, this argument is perfectly logical. However, this claim may be reversed. For if one is indicating that there is evil in this world, they are believing that there has been a "line" drawn somewhere to separate the good and the bad. This "line" is known by many, if I dare say all, yet nobody actually determined what was considered bad. The reversal of the problem of evil can lead to the argument of God and evil both existing in the same world. But, it seems as though if there were a perfect God, there would be no evil in the world, as He would not be able to create it or He would be moral enough to see it happening and stop it. Can we really live in a world that contains evil, which was created by a perfect God that is not capable of creating evil/capable of stopping it? This question may even lead into the following question, assuming that God and evil do exist together: if there is a God, why is there (allowed) evil in the world? However, before we are even able to begin to understand why there is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Evil And Evil : The Problem Of Evil In Nature The problem of evil refers to the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil within a world governed by an omnipotent God. Flannery O'Connor suggested that through their works of art, authors should make it their goal to "give the devil his due." This to say that, by acknowledging and analyzing the qualities of the varying representations of evil in art, there is a movement towards answering the larger question(s). In bringing these "devils" into existence and in giving them sentience, authors are effectively providing prospective answers for where and how evil takes shape in the world. Authors of Modern British literature engaged with this discussion in a wide variety of techniques. Some suggested that evil was an inherent part of human existence, and that by extension an inherent part of the individual, while others explored the idea of evil as an independent force or manifestation capable of answering for why innocent suffer. Both Flannery O'Connor and Oscar Wilde chose the latter consideration. In The Picture of Dorian Gray and in "The Lame Shall Enter First" outside influence(s) are held accountable for the misconducts of the given characters. For instance, Dorian is provoked, and arguably pressured into his sins by Lord Henry Watton who instills the belief in Dorian that youth is necessary in order to achieve happiness. • 27. Evil Are Good And Evil : The Evils Of Evil Some argue that evil people are powerful, while others argue that the evil are weak and should be pitied. Boethius is a Christian, who purely relies on logic to argue his points. In the Consolation of Philosophy, Boethius argues that the wicked do evil but thatand evil is nothing; therefore, the wicked can do nothing and should be pitied. Although Boethius's view on God is somewhat plausible. Contrary to Boethius's view, evil is something which can wreak havoc on others' lives. Boethius argues that we should pity the evil because they are weak. To set up his argument for why the evil should be pitied, he begins by explaining that doing the good, which is achieving self mastery through virtue, will lead to happiness because one's virtue cannot be stolen, unlike material objects such as money (iii.4).The desire for material objects is insatiable, but the quest for self–mastery leads to contentment.(iii.4). People are not in control of material objects, and once they lose them, they will fall into perpetual sadness ( ii.5). Everybody wants happiness, but we established that people can only be happy if they are good, something which the wicked cannot achieve (iv.2). This leads to the conclusion that the wicked are weak because they are unable to seek happiness. Boethius shows that since the wicked desire to attain the good, but are too weak, they have to resort to using a lesser good, evil (iv.2). However, since only the ultimate power, virtue, can lead to happiness, these earthly powers are not actually powerful at all. In fact, evil is nothing because God cannot do evil, and since God is omnipotent, the power of doing evil is not real (iv.3). [good] People who do evil are not even human because they cannot seek the purpose of humans, which is self–mastery, and they are beasts instead as they lead their lives by their desires (iv.3). They cannot seek the reward of eternal happiness, and will be stuck with sadness and weakness until they reform forever. Therefore, the wicked are similar to sick patients who are too weak to recover and should be pitied because instead of being treated, they are harshly rebuked by lawyers and judges for their evil actions (iv.4). • 29. Evil : The Problem Of Evil According to theism, God is: "that being which no greater is possible, and he is omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent. By having a God who only desires good, and us living in a world where evil exists, it is logically impossible and that is what created the problem of evil. Problem of Evil: There are two sides of the problem of evil which are the logical and evidential arguments. The logical side states that as long as evil and suffering exists in this world there is no God. That does not only contradict with the idea of God being "all–good", but also him being "all–knowing" and "all–powerful" as well. Because, if God only desires good, then how evil was formed unless God was evil. If not, then if God has all knowledge, he should know evil exists and then use his "power" to put an end to it. However, evil can support the idea of the existence of God at the same time specially that it was discussed in most theist religions. The most important concept in those religions is that if evil did not exist, then good would not have existed. If humans could not desire good and evil, then humans will lose our free will. With this in mind, if God created humans as rational beings, then he must create free will in order for humans to have true thoughts and emotions. Otherwise, humans will be considered irrational. So, the logical side mostly does not seem to work, and that is where atheists suggested the idea of the evidential side of the problem of evil. The evidential side ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Evil is anything of profound wickedness. They are very different, aren't they? Now, read a newspaper, listen to a story, or turn on the news. It is not definite, but you most likely will hear about an occurrence that caused someone harm. Nowadays, people mostly hear about slashing in the streets, kidnappings, murders, and so many more gruesome things. These are all examples of evil. Now, listen some more. In some cases, there are heroes, who protect people from these tragic events. And, since heroes are doing good, while criminals are doing bad, they sort of are working together. • 32. Problem Of Evil : The Problem Of Evil The Problem of Evil Does the problem of evil pose a challenge for theists and the existence of God? The problem of evil argues that there is so much suffering in the world that an all–good and all powerful God would not allow such suffering to exist. Therefore, a God with those characteristics does not exist. Unless the suffering is necessary for an adequate reason. Some people argue that suffering is necessary for there to be good and for us to able to understand what good is. In this paper, I will argue that suffering does not need to exist in order for good to exist, because the existence of good does not depend on suffering. I will then argue that good and suffering are not logical opposites. Finally, I will conclude that sinceevil is not justified, then the God that we defined does not exist. When we are discussing the problem of evil, we are specifically discussing a God that is omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good. A God that is perfectly good would not allow suffering to exist, and any minute amount of suffering that exists disproves God's existence. Unless, the suffering is justified with an adequate reason. However, even then there seems to be large amounts of evil in the world that seems unnecessary for any good reason. By evil and suffering I mean death, pain, and disease. • 35. Dichotomy Of Evil And Evil In Voltaire's Candide Dualism exists in human nature. Voltaire, an Enlightenment writer explores the tendency of humans to seek out good, but also the acts of evil that continue to happen. Voltaire catalogs a diverse cast of flawed characters in his signature satire Candide. Many of these characters contrast other characters in different aspects. These character foils highlight the weaknesses and limited strengths of its counterpart. These flaws are inevitably a human characteristic that corrupt humanity but also essential in development. By intertwining vice and virtue within characters, Voltaireintones that humans are all intrinsically flawed, but the distinction between the antagonistic dichotomy of evil and good is ambiguous. First, our protagonist Candide and his valet Cacambo serve as appropriate examples: a naive optimist and a worldly pragmatist. When Candide finds the monkey lovers appalling and unusual, Cacambo does not "see anything odd about their passion" (Voltaire 49). Exposed by the cruelties of the real world, Cacambo's sharp wits allow him to take control of a situation and suffer less adversities than other characters. Inexperienced and innocent, Candide can only think one dimensionally; instead of thinking and acting for himself, Candide surrounds himself with people who do the decision making for him. Only because of the wits and decisions of Cacambo, Old Woman, and Martin is he able to survive until the end of the novel. Voltaire contrasts Cacambo's wisdom with Candide's ... • 36. Good Vs. Evil : Good And Evil As Martin Luther said, "Good works do not make a good man, but a good man does good works; evil works do not make a wicked man, but a wicked man does evil works" (On Christian Library). The media is constantly flooded with a consistent stream of negativity. Currently in our small world we are fighting wars, preventing nuclear fallouts, and even protecting citizens from terrorist attacks. Notice that all of these instances share one common type of conflict: man versus man. The most common misconception is the difference between good and bad. What makes someone good; what makes someone bad? To some extent, there is good and bad in every person. Lead singer of the rock band The Animals, Eric Burdon, agrees. Burdon was quoted once saying, "Inside each of us, there is the seed of both good and evil. It's a constant struggle as to which one will win. And one cannot exist without the other" (BrainyQuote). The fact of the matter is the following: there are both good and evil in the world, but there is more than just one determining factor on whether a person or thing is good or bad. The most common associated word with good is perfect. Many people expect that if someone has good grades in school, a good family life, and a healthy social life that their life must be perfect. However, it could mean the quite opposite. What determines a healthy social life when no two people make the same relationships with others? How can you judge a good family life other than the fact they may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Evil, The, And The Threat Of Evil A reason that ascriptions of perverse can be particularly injurious or dangerous is that it isn 't always visible what companions mean when they use the term 'evil.' As Eve Garrard clown it "the general privacy encompassment the term constrain some thinkers very backward to appeal to the consideration of evil"(Garrard 2002, 322). For instance, some people believe that to say that someone complete an bad deed involved that that person execute out of malice (see e.g., Kekes 2005), while others believe that evildoing can event from many different sorts of spur, even admirable motivation (see e.g., Card 2002). Given this ambiguity, it might be unclear whether an assignment of wicked attributes despicable psychological attributes to an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast to the vast concept of evil, the narrow concept of evil picks out only the most morally despicable sorts of actions, characters, events, etc. As Marcus Singer puts it "'evil' ... is the defeat possible term of opprobrium believable" (Singer 2004, 185). Since the near{5} concept of evil entangle moral condemnation, it is suitably ascribed only to moral agents and their actions. For instance, if only human beings are virtuous agents, then only human beings can perform evil actions. Evil in this narrower sense is more often meant when the term 'perverse' is used in contemporaneous moral, political, and constitutional contexts. This entrance will focus on wicked in this narrower sensation. The entry will not discuss wicked in the ample sense or the problem of mischieveous to any significant degree In the second half of the twentieth hundred, atheologians (that is, persons who aim to prove the no–entity of God) commonly claimed that the problem of evil was a proposition of logical inconsistency. J. L. Mackie (1955, p. 200), for example, assert, To finish whether evil is qualitatively distinct from unqualified wrongdoing we must first understand what it is for two concepts to be qualitatively obvious. According to some theorists two concepts are qualitatively unconnected if, and only if, all instantiations of the first concept share a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Evil: The Logical Problem Of Evil The logical problem of evil (double check if name attached like evidential problem) and William Rowe's evidential argument from evil, show that a rational belief in God is unfeasible due to the evil that exists in the world. The problem of evil is acknowledging the possibility that God, an omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent being is not actually, all good, all knowing and all powerful. (maybe delete/change highlighted part). If evil exists then how can an omni–natured being exist? (find reference). There are numerous theodicies that argue otherwise, for example, the free will argument and John Hick's soul–making theodicy. However, theproblem of evil is still too significant to ignore. • 39. Evil : Evil And Evil It is with no surprise that evil is lurking all around us. We live in a world that is unpredictable and dangerous. There are two categories of evil. The first is natural evil, which focuses on nature. The second is moral evil, which focuses on harm among others. The problem of evil is known to object the existence of God. Many atheists will say that if God is so good, then why do bad things happen to good people? Not to mention why did God create a bad world? We are often left speechless by the acts done onto others, whether it's through naturalevil or moral evil. The question is why does evil exist and why does God allow evil to exist? The problem of evil challenges our beliefs and makes us think twice about humanity and God. I intend to evaluate the problem of evil through the following theories, The Free Will Argument, Evil as a Privation ofGood and Evil as Therapy. Let's take a look at the Free Will Defense in relation to evil. God created us with the intention to be able to discover and know Him. His aim was to develop a bond of love in faith and obedience to Him. In order to accomplish this, we must be genuinely free to choose how we want to bond with God. The downfall of this free will is it allows the presence of good and evil to intermingle. God cannot place limitations or intervene on our free will, as it then would limit our freedom. Richard Swinburne was in favor of the Free Will Defense. Swinburne (2009) stated that, "A person who had perfect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Evil And Evil : The Problem Of Evil The problem of evil is the notion that, how can an all good, powerful, loving God exists when evil seems to exist also. The problem of evil also gives way to the notion that if hell exists then God must be evil for sending anyone there.I believe hell exists in light of the idea that God is holy. The larger is how anyone can go to heaven. When I look out into the world it does not take long for me to realize that we are all different in many different ways. We all grow up in many different societies and cultures that have shaped the way we think and act. They way behave reflects the culture we grew up in, someone from Philly will act different than a person from Kentucky, along with someone from Florida. We grow up with a different perspective of what is right and wrong, what is good and bad. Some of us grew up in religious households, going to church every Sunday and celebrating every holiday under the sun. Others grow up in non–religious households that would rather not spend time worrying about the meaning of God. The point i'm trying to make is that we are all different in thousands of ways. We never chose to be this way. What did we choose though? We did not choose when we were born. We did not choose what family, culture, or religion we were born into. We did not choose the gifts and talents that we were born with. Some of the uncontrollable experiences in our lives have shaped the way we think and act today. We are all different and this idea is at the heart of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
