Your Life As A Girl By Curtis Sittenfeld
What does being beautiful really mean? It is the possessing qualities that give great pleasure or
satisfaction to see, hear, or think about. It goes way beyond the looks but what is within. The media
seems to have a different view on beauty. The concept to tell someone what they are or what they
should be, is what the media exhibits to society with ideal females known as "models." In Curtis
Sittenfeld, "Your Life as a Girl," she describes the life as a female and the way they are being
viewed. Although all females are beautiful, they feel like they need to appear a certain way to be
categorized as such. Living in a world where others opinions are more powerful than one's own,
makes it harder for women to actually consider themselves as being beautiful. ... Show more content

Being noticed boost the confidence of women which makes them assume their appearance has to be
exceptional. How someone looks physically gives others a first impression of that person. For
women to be noticed by men they feel like they have to look a certain way. In the short story the
author explains one of many of the struggles that females go through, Sittenfeld declares, "Maybe if
you do sit–ups before you go to bed at night your stomach will be flat, and they'll love you well"
(199). Making one assume that if she puts in the effort to exercise then her presence will be
admirable. Seeing this happen every day, women trying to be someone that they are not, makes me
quite furious. Not pleasing to their own eyes but to the eyes of others, women tend to need the
compliments of others to enhance their own confidence that they are pleasing to the

Summary Of Through The Mirror Of Beauty Culture
When the word "beauty" is used, most people think of a female with a fit body shape, hairless body
and light skin color which is wrong because of all these types of attitudes impact on a woman's life.
In "Through the Mirror of Beauty Culture", Rice argues that we should rethink the concept of beauty
and rely on "beauty myth". The main focus is to explore different methods of how the society and
cultural visualizing have shaped women's appearance. As you may recall, the body plays a major
role in a woman's life because it affects her self–esteem, psychological health and character. The
author describes a variety of different types of "body projects" or "self–making projects" which
people with body dissatisfaction practice to protect themselves

The Influence Of Beauty In The Media
Nowadays people are all constantly connected and surrounded by media and advertisements, it is
almost impossible to avoid the ideas that media exposes, but is it all fun and games? Media and
advertising are very powerful sources of both communication and information; moreover, teenagers
are constantly using it and being targeted by it more than any other age group. Media influences
many behaviors and ideas that teenagers have, greatly affecting them because they resort to media to
learn about beauty standards and more. Often times resulting in twisted perceptions of beauty. Over
time the ideal of beauty changes because it depends on what is popular/in style during that time
period. In addition, some culture's beauty ideals are different from other cultures. However in every
culture there is an ideal of beauty that is expected to be followed by their people. By definition
beauty is "a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses,
especially the sight." People have their own vision of beauty so anything can be seen as beauty, it
just depends in the eye of the beholder. However, instead of allowing people to have their own ideal
of beauty one was created for them. In American culture, beauty is centered upon body image.
Advertisements and social media create and set an ideal of beauty for teenagers that is impossible to
accomplish. This unachievable beauty standard can harshly affect the teens in negative ways, but it

Often times in literature the body becomes a symbolic part of the story. The body may come to
define the character, emphasize a certain motif of the story, or symbolize the author's or society's
mindset. The representation of the body becomes significant for the story. In the representation of
their body in the works of Marie de France's lais "Lanval" and "Yonec," the body is represented in

the ideal beauty holds, which Lanval's Fairy Queen portrays. In France's "Yonec," she diverts the

The Fairy Queen controls the dynamics of their relationship. They meet and separate whenever the
Fairy Queen feels the need to. The Fairy Queen's beauty gives her power and control over Lanval.
The concept of beauty as a method of control for women is not something new. Lori Baker–Sperry
and Liz Grauerholz discuss the concept of female empowerment through beauty in their article "The
Pervasiveness and Persistence of the Feminine Beauty Ideal in Children's Fairy Tale." Baker–Sperry
and Grauerholz state that, "women willingly engage in 'beauty rituals' and perceive being (or
becoming) beautiful as empowering, not oppressive" (712). Baker–Sperry and Grauerholz argue that
in children's fairy tales, the female characters see their beauty as their most useful tool and would
undergo "beauty rituals" to attain this beauty. By being beautiful, the Fairy Queen is able to win the
attention and loyalty of Lanval. Not only does the Fairy Queen receive power in this bond, but also
Lanval himself finds good fortune in the form of physical wealth. To further emphasize the Fairy
Queen's beauty and the power she holds over the court, France uses the series of girls prior to the
Fairy Queen's entrance. This builds a sense of suspense and the fact that the Fairy Queen easily
trumps the girls in beauty further emphasizes her superiority. By emphasizing the Fairy Queen's
bodily beauty, France is able to show the power the Fairy Queen has over Lanval and the court.

Social Norms Of A Female 's Beauty And Body Image
"You're a human being, you live once and life is wonderful, so eat the damn red velvet cupcake." –
Emma Stone. The world is rapidly changing in the world of women. Even over the last decade, the
role and social norms of a female has changed substantially. With that said, societies standards of a
women 's beauty and body image has a direct effect on teenage girls, leading many to develop eating
disorders such as anorexia.
There are two main types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Both of these
types are characterized as a major concern about one's weight and shape in a negative way. Bulimia
is categorized as binge eating or excessive consumption of food. What tags along with bulimia is
aggressive and short tempered side effects. Of the two, anorexia nervosa is the most common among
teenage girls. Anorexia nervous is characterized as self–induced starvation and excessive weight
loss. It is well known that most girls watch their weight to fit a social norm what they do not realize
is this can lead to anorexia and major health risks. Anorexia is a disorder associated with both the
psychological and medical complications. According to Dr. Thomas Insel, Director of National
Institute of Mental Health, "Research tells us that Anorexia is a brain disease with severe metabolic
effects on the entire body." What most people do not know is that genetics does play a factor when it
comes to developing anorexia. The biological factor is often overlooked because

Beauty Is Not At The Eyes
"Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart" "True beauty comes from within". The
physical appearance of a person is the first thing another person notices about someone. The
definition of beauty is the combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the
aesthetic senses, especially the sight. People havecome to the conclusion that beauty is about the
exterior appearance, however, true beauty is defined as the way a person acts and thinks. In today's
society, many people feel the pressure in surpassing their physical appearance. Women feel their
hair, makeup, and clothes need to look flawless in order to be around others. Whether they are not
comfortable with their appearance without makeup, or they feel with makeup members of the
opposite sex will take notice, physical appearance is important to people. Often times, men focus on
a woman's physical features rather than her true beauty on the inside. Many individuals in today's
world need to re–evaluate their outlook on beauty. True beauty lives within the way a person acts
and feels. True beauty is not only found in people, but also in little actions and things in nature. We
often take the natural beauties we see everyday for granted. Although not everyone may like snow
or rain, frosty snowfalls and cool rain showers are one of natures many beauties. Rainbows are
another example of nature's beauties. True beauty is defined as the way a person acts or thinks.

Societal Standards Of Female Beauty
Media is something every female and male look to for guidance when it comes to fashion, beauty,
and information. "Magazines and advertisements are used to help women better themselves by
giving information and products to make them look and feel better" (Serdar 1). Without magazines
and advertisements there wouldn 't be an exact focus on beauty standards.. People would have the
freedom to choose what they like and what they consider beautiful instead of following the crowd.
"Sociocultural standards of female beauty are in every aspect of popular media. Mass media 's use of
unrealistic models sends the message that in order for a woman to be beautiful, she must be
unhealthy. Women are negatively affected by the constant exposure to unrealistic media ideas of
beauty"(Serdar 1). Because women of the American culture constantly compare themselves to
models and actors, they push themselves to diet and exercise in an unhealthy manner to achieve a
goal that is both bad for them physically and mentally. "The ideal of beauty is a form of self–
oppression. Women see themselves in pieces" (Sontag 1). Because females are so self observant of
themselves they tend to put more attention on things that don't actually need attention. Therefore,
they feel as if their not as beautiful as a person they see on television. "Very small percent of women
in western countries meet the criteria the media uses to define beauty. So many women repeatedly
exposed the media images that send a message that

The "Beauty Myth" is a reading that talked about the standard that men decide is necessary to be
beautiful. Naomi Wolf shows us how as women have become more liberated the standards of what
makes a women considered beautiful have become stricter. Throughout her story Wolf shares with
us that beauty is completely subjective in that it changes with cultures and with age. Women were
actively gaining more legal and material rights through the women's movement. Wolf states, "Many
women that women's collective progress has stalled; compared with the heady momentum of earlier
days, there is a dispiriting climate of confusion, division, cynicism, and above all, exhaustion." (10

Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold By C. S. Lewis
Beauty is seen as one of the most important aspects of an individual as it the first characteristic
someone notices about a person. Some are treated differently due to his or her aesthetically pleasing
or displeasing face and is most evident in the book Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold by C. S.
Lewis that takes place approximately in the time period 700 to 450 B.C. In the novel Till We Have
Faces: A Myth Retold by C. S. Lewis the three central female characters, Orual, Psyche, and
Redival, are all regarded to differently based on their physical appearances and this attitude is
prevalent in modern society. Orual, the narrator of the novel, is not treated as a woman due to her
lack of attracting physical features in the novel and would translate into such present day. Other's
perception of Orual's face makes her life difficult as people do not think she is feminine and
unworthy to find a husband. Bardia, one of the guardsmen, makes this clear when he states, "'Why,

The Carnal Prayer Mat by Yu Li
Vesperus' masculine beauty is a central theme in Li Yu's moral comedy, The Carnal Prayer Mat.
What's more, his life trajectory parallels non–Mahayana Indic accounts of Siddhartha's path to
enlightenment, particularly on the emphasis placed on descriptions of both men's physical perfection
and their subsequent sexual appetite and prowess. Both Vesperus' and Siddhartha's masculine beauty
propels them forward on their life paths, positioning them in the simultaneously instructive and
destructive feminine sphere of the inner quarter. The wealth of sexual experiences gives both men
the necessary insight for their critical realization of the superficiality and emptiness of a life guided
by carnal desires and sexual pursuits of women. As a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What's more, these gifts of beauty and intelligence are described as Heavenly–endowed. When first
meeting Vesperus, Lone Peak muses, "What a fine intelligence the man has! But the Creator is at
fault for giving him this physical form. Why match a heart that was meant for the study of Buddha
with a face that will lead to damnable deeds?" (Yu 21). This sentiment of beauty as a cosmic gift
from higher beings is echoed in Vesperus' narcissistic self–reflection when deciding whether to take
a life path of asceticism, filial piety, or sexual debauchery: "Since Heaven has given birth to
someone like me, it must also have given birth to a girl fit to be my mate....That is why at twenty I
am still unmarried–I want to do full justice to my genius and my looks" (Yu 25).
Vesperus' wish to do "justice" to his intellectual brilliance and looks speaks to the degree to which
masculine beauty is an important catalyst of sexual desire and subsequent acts of seduction and
moral transgression. Lone Peak describes Buddha, the Lord of Heaven, as a doting and overly
indulgent parent who has blundered in giving a favored child, Vesperus, too many blessings:
By the time the boy grows up, he is convinced that his body and nature were given to him by
Heaven and Earth and nurtured by his father and mother so that no harm will ever befall him, and he
does any wicked thing that enters his head. Only

Analysis Of Face It, Ladies By Elissa Strauss
It Is What Is On the Inside That Counts As Amy Davis says, "True beauty lies deep within. No
matter what you look like on the outside, if you know you are beautiful, nobody can change that."
Society today has created a difficult beauty standard for women to attain; therefore, women feel bad
about themselves if they do not fit society's ideal image. In her article, "Face it, ladies: We can't all
be beautiful," author Elissa Strauss describes the impossible beauty definition we have in the world
today. Strauss believes it is what is on the inside that counts. Strauss has the right idea because all
women are beautiful in their own way. Some women express their beauty through intelligence and
morals, while others show their beauty in a physical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Strauss states, "In recent years, labels like American Eagle Outfitters and Betabrand have hopped on
the "real" wagon featuring more average–looking women in their campaigns." For example,
American Eagle does not use stick thin models to display their products which makes their clothing
more enticing to average women. Strauss makes a great point when she says, "Here's the thing about
"real" bodies. We actually see them every day. Walk down the street. Go to a locker room. Or a
beach. Real bodies are literally everywhere (except perhaps a few neighborhoods in Miami or Los
Angeles). So these attempts aren't about getting us to see more real bodies – they're about getting us
to engage in some communal affirmation that they are not only okay but also beautiful." "Real"
bodies are prevalent compared to the ideal female body. If society could see average bodies in the
same light as they see the unhealthy skinny models, women's self–esteem would grow at an
astonishing rate. In the article it is stated, "How thin is too thin for real beauty? How fat is too fat?"
There is no answer to this question. If you are at a healthy weight and not underweight or
overweight, there is nothing wrong with the number the scale shows. Beauty is not always physical
because a woman can be beautiful by intelligence, her morals, or her compassion towards

Comparing Female Beauty In Jacob And Wilhelm Grimm's 'Snow...
John Dela Cruz Professor Shekhtman ENWR 1102 26 9 March 2015 The Importance and
Appreciation of Female Beauty Beauty is the most desirable trait a woman can have. It is
immediately recognized since it is a feature that is physically evident. A woman who possesses
beauty is admired by others and has a higher likelihood of attracting more men, including those that
are of high social class. However, not everyone who is beautiful lives a simple life. In "Little Snow
White," written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Snow White's beauty leads to the envy and

Although some women are beautiful, some are wiser than others. When her father asks what she

choose a branch for a gift? On the other hand, both stepsisters, resembling the typical materialistic
teenagers in modern society, ask for beautiful dresses. It seems like a reasonable choice for the
stepsisters to ask for such gifts at a fair. However, the branch Cinderella asks for grows into a tree at
her mother's. A little white bird, which symbolizes the reincarnation of her deceased biological
mother, visits the tree occasionally. The little white bird grants Cinderella's desires: "...if Cinderella

resumes her role of a caring parent in the form of a bird. Ultimately, Cinderella proves to be the
wisest among the three girls. After all, she can wish for a beautiful dress whenever she desires,

Image Of Beauty Different Culture
How is the image of beauty different from culture to culture as expressed in this essay? Beauty is
measured through certain types of body art that is specific to each culture. Some communities
measure beauty by external adornments such as the women of the Bonda tribe who dress in colorful
jewelry. Other communities believe that beauty is determined by physical alterations such as the
stretching of necks in Thailand. Varying cultural perceptions and beliefs result in different
definitions of beauty. Although each achieveculture has their own idea of beauty they serve a
common purpose; to visually and uniformly assimilate to ones culture. Discuss the various modes of
body art and scarification that are mentioned. Body art may be seen as jewelry, piercings, clothing,
scars, and makeup. The women of the Bonda tribe adorn themselves in beaded skullcaps, necklaces,
and earrings where as the men of the Dani tribe adorn using clothing. They simply wear a privacy
gourd which makes them easily distinguishable. Scarification is utilized by the warriors of Ethiopia

Double Standards In Jane Martin's Beauty
Double Standard (Working Title) Beauty– a small word containing only six letters, but one that

Hair And Beauty Is Relating To Cultural Identity
"Your outer beauty will capture the eyes; your inner beauty will capture the heart." Said by Steven
Aitcheson. I believe that hair and beauty is related to cultural identity. Many People can be
handsome and beautiful in their own little way. Being beautiful doesn't mean to be beautiful from
the outside only, but it also means to be beautiful from the inside. Your beauty is being who you are
inside and out. In addition, I see hair and someone's beauty as something that is beautiful, but
something that is symbolic for many reasons in society. "Together racism and sexism daily reinforce

We can definitely see the symbolism of hair through different cultures and religions. In many
cultures women cover their hair; however, it is much more likely to see a woman covering her hair

in Islam cover their hair for a religious purpose. Not every woman in Islam covers her hair. Every
woman should be able to choose who she is, and how she wants to be. Whether covering her hair or

Beauty Essay : The Definition Of Beauty
The Definition of Beauty The word "beauty" is often thrown around and can mean a lot of different
things to a lot of different people. Lots of people consider beauty to be a girl with a tight, little figure
and gorgeous locks of hair cascading down her back, the type of girl that when she walks into a
room, heads turn. Then there are those that consider beauty to be what's on the inside. Such as
someone that puts others before themselves. Beauty can have so many different definitions, and
nobody's is wrong. But beauty is out there, whether it be seen or felt. Some of the most common
definitions of beauty are about what's on the outside, or external beauty. What you see when you
look at someone for the first time and what you will continually notice about someone every time
after that. The attractiveness halo effect, explains that people often associate good–looking people to
also have good traits and qualities. Such as success, intelligence and confidence. Which is what
causes the brain to see someone as even more attractive. It is believed that beauty and good qualities
tend to be bunched together for a number of reasons including media, culture, and our own
preferences (Radwan). Every human's mind was brought up in a different matter; therefore our ideas
of beauty may be different than the person next to us. For example, my idea of someone being
physically attractive is more than likely completely different than that of an Eskimo that lives in a

The Beauty Myth Naomi Wolf Summary
Kaleidoscope of Beauty In our world today, society and the dictionary have a different opinion on
what constitutes beauty. The dictionary defines beauty as "the qualities in a person or a thing that
give pleasure to the senses or the mind" ("Beauty"). Society has a more cruel definition of beauty. It
puts pressure on women who want to appear beautiful to everyone but themselves. Naomi Wolf,
author of "The Beauty Myth," wrote, "Many are ashamed to admit that such trivial concerns – to do
with physical appearance, bodies, faces, hair, clothes – matter so much" (486). So instead of
accepting the fact that everybody has flaws, nowadays women will spend unbelievable amounts of
money to try to rid themselves of these flaws just to feel beautiful. The biggest perpetrators–social ...

Society today refuses to accept people who accept their flaws instead of telling the population that
flaws make a person essentially unique and different. The concept of beauty revolves around three
main ideas: Physical appearance, aging, and losing control of themselves. In "The Beauty Myth,"
Wolf explains "Contemporary standards of feminine beauty have devolved to a point that can only
be described as anorexic, and America's young women are paying the price through a near–epidemic
of bulimia and anorexia" (486). Girls today do not feel comfortable in their own skin and try so hard
to become somebody else. She says, "The beauty myth tells a story: the quality called "beauty"
objectively and universally exists. Women must want to embody it and men must want to possess
women who embody it" (Wolf 488). Women should want to feel beautiful, but not for herself, but
for the approval from the male population. In this essay it talks about how women must also

Female Beauty in America Essay
Sophistication and Flair: The True Meaning of Beauty
Three words come to mind when one sees the epitome of Hollywood's A–List – sophistication, style,
and confidence. Although the media will always pose celebrities as sex symbols, tasteful images
have now become a norm for today's society. A woman's beauty is now being portrayed in other
ways – fully clothed and self–assured. It is evident now even as I look around campus. The girls
who are poised and classy do not prance around in belly shirts and mini skirts. It's all about a look. A
woman is no longer sexy because she dresses in next to nothing – she is sexy because she has
character. Whether its mystery, humor, certainty, charm, or intelligence – women are more ... Show

It's all about how one acts. For instance, Britney Spears, once an icon for young girls, has been
recently depicted as offensive and distasteful in her clothing and manner. It is now women such as
those portrayed in the movie The Devil Wears Prada who are admired by young teens. The
characters in the movie played by Meryl Streep and Anne Hatheway gave successful, working
women an enticing edge when they mixed their confident attitudes with classy style. They appeal to
all genders and ages because they are women who know what they want – they don't need to be
naked to get it. They dress urbanely and conservatively. They radiate beauty through their character
– not through their lack of attire. Although the trend is slowing disappearing, many magazines such
as Rolling Stone will always portray women as sex symbols. We will probably never see the day
when our society is devoid of this exploitation – it's an unrealistic hope. Take for example, the ever–
popular Britney Spears. As I previously stated, she was once viewed as an "icon for young girls".
That role is an extremely difficult one to live up to – one that should be valued and treated as an
honor. The one–time "teen queen" managed to portray herself more than once in a distasteful
manner on the cover of several magazines. What type of message is she sending to young girls?
How can we expect our society to produce sophisticated young women with

Cléo 5 To 7 Analysis
Cléo from 5 to 7 is a Nouvelle Vague film directed by the only female director in the French New
Wave movement, Agnès Varda. Having a double–status as a female and a film–maker, Varda is
known to be a female outsider of Cahiers du cinema (a film clique including all the major–league
Nouvelle Vague film directors – François Truffaut, Jean–Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette) who
"include[d] her desire to assert her individuality" (Bénézet, 10). The film is about a young singer,
Florence "Clèo" Victoire, who waits for her cancer diagnosis and undergoes through a

In fact, the film follows Cléo's trajectory throughout the whole story: from fortuneteller's house to

audiences want to play at the moment. She is "a fantasy, a fetishized object," every male viewer

Film Analysis Of Pantene Commercial
This commercial for the Pantene Gold Series explains itself beautifully in its description,
"Pantene presents a poetic celebration of African American hair elevating it to a standard not seen in
mainstream beauty media. It features women and girls who are beautiful, confident, vibrant, and
elegant and who draw personal strength from the strength of their hair – its texture, its style and its
history" (web).
This commercial was created to advertise the announcement of new Pantene hair products created
uniquely for Black women. It empowered black women's bodies by representing their hair in
powerfully positive ways. Not only did the commercial center specifically on this empowerment,
but it went even further to uplift black hair's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a proudly self–proclaimed afrocentric womanist, I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart
that I'm here for it. From all angles, the commercial evidenced a deep commitment to the celebration
of all kinds of black hair and the community it represents. This is the kind of media representation
that Black women both need and deserve. Black women's need for positive hair portrayal in mass
media is crucial to the development of our self–worth. In a society where attractiveness is generally
recognized as a woman 's most admirable quality, most women (especially those who don't fit into
the beauty standard) are aware of the subtle rules for feminine appearance and behavior. For black
women, this means understanding our large setbacks within the scale of attractiveness based on skin
color alone, and compensating for them through over–commitment to other ways of acting out
normative beauty. Rose Weitz deconstructs this concept in specifically when she says,
"Within the black community attractiveness still primarily centers on having light skin and long,
straight hair. Since there's little one can do about one's skin color, much of black women's attention
to their looks focuses on their hair" (Weitz, p. 224).
In creating and uplifting the white beauty standard, society had to destroy and degrade the black
one. Mass media's marginalization of Black hair encouraged multiple generations of Black women

Marquardt Beauty Analysis Essay
The number 1.618:1 is the golden ratio that defines beauty and the number 1.681 is called the phi
(Marquardt). Everything must be proportioned by this ratio to be considered beautiful according to
the mathematical formula. The Marquardt Beauty Analysis website mentions that there are two
components contributed to the ideal beauty, and they are symmetry and harmony. After resizing the
mask to the subject's face, the result was nearly perfect. However, the subject has some problems
fitting into the outlines of the mask. The eyebrows of the mask are below the subject's eyebrows.
The outline of the mask does not cover the subject's lower lip. For the anaface site, it was simple to
work with. First, check on the terms and conditions. Second, select a gender. Third, browse and
upload a picture of your choice. The last step is to place 17 dots accordingly, and then click next to
find out the result. The subject received a score of 7.49 out of 10 on the anaface site. The website
also lists the reasons why the face received the score, such as "the ratio of your face width to nose
width is nearly ideal" or "your nose is too wide for your mouth." Three trials were done on ... Show

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Ugly Truth About Beauty By...
The Ugly Truth About Beauty by Dave Barry is a humorous essay, which uses techniques like satire
including exaggeration, that gives the reader a funny yet accurate portrayal of women and their
beauty standards compared to standards set for men. Barry uses satire, humor to criticize the faults
of others, to connect with his audience. Although Barry loves to make funny points throughout his
essay he constantly weaves in serious facts and examples of this issue. Barry will make a valid point
then immediately follow it up with exaggeration. His use of satire in the essay makes the reading
light and enjoyable while showing the reader the double standards of beauty. In the Ugly Truth

men by saying then only focus on things like sports. Barry exaggerates men and women in the first 4
paragraphs to show the reader the issue of beauty. Then Barry supports his position by presenting an
example of a women's low self–esteem. His first example is how America creates toys for children

What Is Beauty In Society
The definition of beauty can vary between person to person. For centuries, beauty was seen to
satisfy other people but oneself. Beauty can be judged on the clothes one puts on to wear, the
makeup that is being used, the hairstyle that keeps up with the latest fashion and even the shape of
one's body. In this generation, we are raised in an indestructible bubble of judgement. Beauty can
also be seen as an ornament. People cover their Christmas trees with ornaments to make it more
appealing to the eye, the same goes with human beings. Specifically females try to present
themselves in ways society tells them is right. However, underneath all of the ribbons and ornaments
is a simple tree with great personality. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This statement is used
vigorously throughout society and is seen as an empowering statement with women. However, it
should be rewritten as, beauty is in the eye of society. Society tells people how to live their life and
how to present themselves in a "proper way." Nevertheless, millions of human beings are getting
plastic surgery to change their outermost appearance. Starting from a nose job to botox all over the
face, individuals spend so much time and money to make themselves look unrecognizable With this
being said, plastic surgery is not a bad commodity, as it is all a personal choice to an individual. It
enhances one's features and makes a person feel better than their best self but in reality the only
element that matters is the inner beauty.
Growing up in this generation, they are influenced by every person in a magazine. Society
altogether, must look past the pictures in Vogue or Cosmopolitan and look deeper in the beauty that
is within us all. Children nowadays are growing up and are expected to look like America's Next
Top Model and they are not focusing in school, because they are too busy looking at what their
friends are wearing and their outermost appearance. Mind is greater than looks, so if students did not
focus on what society would think of them, they would most likely score higher on tests. Inner
beauty is more important than physical beauty, because it is a representation of a person's true self.

Media's Depiction Of Female Beauty
After many years of decrying the media's unrealistic depiction of female beauty, over the last
decade, women across the globe have raised their collective voices and insisted that the media
portray more realistic and anatomically diverse idealized images of women (Bushak, 2015). As a
result, Madison Avenue and Hollywood have begun to include models and actresses of varying
shapes, sizes, and colors more frequently in ad campaigns, commercials, television shows, and
movies (Bennett–Smith, 2015). Subsequently, the media's depiction of female beauty has slowly
started to become more inclusive and realistic (Lindsey, 2015). Nonetheless, more progress must be
made in order to align the media's presentation of ideal female beauty with reality. Therefore,

The Importance Of Body Positivity
Body Positivity: A Weighty Issue For decades, women had been searching for the epitome of beauty
and perfection, even to the point where they've dedicated all of their time and money on products to
enhance their appearances. The society's perception of ideal beauty standards make women feel like
they have to look a certain way in order to blend in, or even to simply make one feel better. Many
females feel pressured to achieve the standards of beauty that society presents to them in their
everyday life. Instead of the media instilling the power to take back what they have stripped away
from women in the first place, the media drowns women in unhealthy beauty standards. The
pervasiveness of unrealistic beauty ideals is a never–ending cycle of unattainability and extreme
self–consciousness in women. Advertisements in the media bombard women with products
associated with beauty, fashion, and weight–reduction. These advertisements float around in
magazines, on the internet, on television, on billboards, endorsed by celebrities, and even on the
radio (Jeon). Because of how easily these images and comparisons are made available to us, women
now consider these bodies normal and have somehow started to shun anything that contrasts this
norm. As these standards become more prevalent and more persuasive, so do a number of women
with low self–worth, eating disorders, and depression (Dittmar). No one desires to speak up about
how eating disorders often go hand in hand with different

Teenage Girls
As a matter of fact, teenage girls are not the only ones who fall victim to the ideal of beauty.
Teenage boys are going through very similar situations. Media and advertisements set their
standards for men to be tall, muscular, board upper body, v–line and have beards etc. Neither males
nor females live without having standards set up for them by society and media. "Widely held
perceptions of beauty and perfection can have a deep and lasting cultural impact on both women and
men." Some impact is that these standards will continue to exist in our future culture and both
genders will never feel comfortable in their own skin/body. Both men and women would continue to
judge themselves and their beauty. Magazines and advertisements usually have images of men
without their shirts in order to show off their muscles and to attract customers. This makes members
of society expect to see a six pack,v–line and pectorals when a male takes off their shirt. This gives
teenage boys fear to take off their shirt when going to the beach or smaller situations like going
inside a pool because they are scared to be criticized for not being muscular. Magazines display
images of these fake models for both men and women which creates intimidation."Study of mass
media magazines discovered that women's magazines had 10.5 times more advertisements and
articles promoting weight loss than men's magazines did (as cited in Guillen & Barr.1944)." The
ideal of beauty targets women more than men. In

The concept of beauty is one of the more intriguing and important concepts in the study of gender
and sexuality. Beauty has held a prominent role in shaping people's personal lives and by extension,
the lives of society and humanity at large in both positive and negative fashions. Charles Darwin's

Charles Darwin's Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871), Sigmund Freud's Three
Contributions to the Theory of Sex (1905), and Robert Musil's The Confusions of a Young Törless
(1906) served to illustrate concepts of aesthetic beauty through the presence of adornment and
beautification, the concept of libido theory and its dependence on physical beauty, and finally the
concept of negative beauty, or the consequences of artificial collectivism and control. Charles
Darwin, Sigmund Freud, and Robert Musil all work off of each other and use the concept of beauty
in different ways, but when read in succession these works serve as a general timeline of gender and
sexuality theory. The combined sources of Charles Darwin's Descent of Man and Selection in
Relation to Sex (1871), Sigmund Freud's Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex (1905), and
Robert Musil's The Confusions of a Young Törless (1906) solidify beauty in all its sense as holding
a strong position in the overarching history of gender and sexuality and are even more interesting to
note due to their progressive nature and philosophical intimacy. These texts stretch across different
subjects, time periods, and even authorial regions to explain how the concept of beauty has
contributed to the history of gender and sexuality, and that contribution must be

Beauty Industry Has A Big Impact On Females And Males
Beauty can be conveyed using a multitude of factors. From the color of a person 's skin, to their
eyes, to even their heart. There are beauty standards, but there are diversities between what 's the
"official" standard and what individuals think is beautiful. Everyone see things in a different light
and America 's beauty standards are no different. The beauty industry has a big impact on females
and males. American's perception of beauty is altered in many different ways based on the culture,
skin color, and influences. The beauty industry has placed many standards of beauty on people that
aren 't actually fair or true, and it is destroying the diversity of beauty. The beauty industry plays a
major role in everything beauty related. Anything from the type of makeup there is to the ways they
can make a person feel about themselves. The beauty industry has only grown since its start. The
first entrepreneurs that developed the beauty industry were men. Recipes and remedies were
apprehended from their wives that were used at home to make products and print books. "The
relation of inner and outer beauty was a connection of trade in drugs and elixirs. Arsenic wafers, a
moderate diet, frequent bathing, and exercise were often recommended" (Peiss 17). The make up or
"elixirs" women manipulated made them appear as beautiful on the outside as they were assumed to
be on the inside. In addition to taking care of oneself. There is no outer beauty if there isn't any inner

Girlchild Christina Piercy Analysis
Professor Zednik

Superficial Prejudicial Sacrificial What is "beauty"? It seems that throughout centuries the definition
of "beauty" has changed drastically; it is constantly being redefined. Looking back to the 1400's
through the 16th century, the ideal woman of that time was, by today's definition, voluptuous and
very full–figured. Ivory skin and red lips were considered very attractive. During the Victorian era,
women strived to have a small 12" tummy; they wore tightly laced corsets, sometimes risking their
health, to achieve a cinched waist. Women were very conservative with their makeup and preferred
a very natural look. As time progressed, the roaring 20's brought new sexy trends. Women tried to

Marge Piercy selectively combines the two words "girl" and "child" because both are typically
symbols of innocence. Many see, and possibly even participate in, shaming girls for being less than
beautiful. Piercy pushes to make a point that although it's common, it isn't right. Once girls reach a
certain age around puberty, their perceptions are altered and are also easily influenced. In the poem,
the "girlchild" is persuaded that there is something wrong with her outer appearance, so "she went to
and fro apologizing" (11). Not only was the "girlchild" brainwashed into thinking she was
inadequate being herself, but her peers were also programmed into believing that there is a standard
of universal "beauty" that everyone should strive to attain. Today, many young girls are exactly like
the "girlchild"; they are raised from children to fit a specific criterion on how they should look and
behave. The standards may change, but they all demand that the "girlchild" become someone, or
something, that she

Ideal Female Body Vs. Aerie's Real Beauty
For almost 50 years, it has been a growing trend for women to be ultra thin. A tiny waist, large hips,
and flat stomach are the characteristics of an ideal female body. (Suhay 1.) Though there are many
campaigns and battles for women to be "their own beautiful selves", there are even larger campaigns
for ultra thin, unhealthy lifestyles that are not usually made public by large companies and
corporations. Dove launched its "Love Yourself " campaign in 2004. It flew almost unnoticed until
2013 when Abercrombie and Fitch's CEO's interview from 2006 resurfaced. He stated that he didn't
want "uncool" and "fat" kids wearing his clothes. Everyone hit back with anti body–shaming
campaigns, blogs, Youtube channels, websites, and posters. Although these campaigns are taking

The Image Of Female Beauty
Mary J. Blige once stated " I know who I am. I am perfect. I'm not the most beautiful women. But I
am one of them." Beauty is a word that holds different means for everyone but with this word it can
change the life of many. Being beautiful in today 's society is something that many women strive to
be disregarding their own uniqueness and filling this void they feel with procedures and other
things. This is the cause of many insecurities to arise in women of all ages which can affect their
self–esteem and confidence in being their self such as in the poem by Katie Makkai when she asks if
she is pretty and worthy. Why is it so hard to abandon this notion that beauty is only in a select few?
Once you embrace yourself you can be unique and more happy and contented in life instead of
hiding behind a fake mask .Beauty should not determine how one is perceived but instead beauty
should be embraced and accepted in all people.
The image of female beauty is changing everyday because the media portrays the unrealistic and
modified images of what beauty is. This is linked to insecurities women feel about their body image,
hair color, skin, eyes, and many other parts of their anatomy.Claire Mysko stated "While social
media is not the cause of low self–esteem, it has all the right elements to contribute to it, Social
media creates an environment where disordered thoughts and behaviours really thrive." Social

Beauty is anything you want it to be, from pimples to nappy hair, "unslayed" edges, and "fleekless"
eyebrows. It is not defined by the way you look, but by the way you carry yourself. Beauty is
attitude, confidence, poise, and self–expression. Someone that is beautiful can be expressed as

Female Cancer Patients Negating Social Ideas of Beauty
My research topic is "How can female cancer patients successfully negotiate social ideas of beauty",
I have chosen this question as a research topic as two of my family members have recently suffered
from and lost their lives to this disease and I want to develop my knowledge of the disease and how
it may lead to other health problems. I have chosen to target the theme of beauty as the changes
induced by both the disease and the treatment are often visible, which sometimes lead to mental
health problems or feelings of great dissatisfaction.
Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and invade other tissues; the
disease can spread to other parts of the body through the circulatory and lymph systems. There are
more than 100 different types of known cancer, which can be grouped into broader categories such
as:
Carcinoma – this is the cancer that originates in the skin and tissues and progresses to cover internal
organs. Some subtypes of carcinoma include adrenocarcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell
carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma.
Sarcoma – this is the cancer that originates in the bones, fat, cartilage, muscle, blood vessels, or
other connective or supportive body tissues.
Leukemia – this is the cancer that is established in blood–forming tissue such as bone marrow. This
causes numerous abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood.
Lymphoma and myeloma – these are cancers that originate in the cells of the immune system.

Your Life As A Girl By Curtis Sittenfeld

  • 1. Your Life As A Girl By Curtis Sittenfeld What does being beautiful really mean? It is the possessing qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction to see, hear, or think about. It goes way beyond the looks but what is within. The media seems to have a different view on beauty. The concept to tell someone what they are or what they should be, is what the media exhibits to society with ideal females known as "models." In Curtis Sittenfeld, "Your Life as a Girl," she describes the life as a female and the way they are being viewed. Although all females are beautiful, they feel like they need to appear a certain way to be categorized as such. Living in a world where others opinions are more powerful than one's own, makes it harder for women to actually consider themselves as being beautiful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being noticed boost the confidence of women which makes them assume their appearance has to be exceptional. How someone looks physically gives others a first impression of that person. For women to be noticed by men they feel like they have to look a certain way. In the short story the author explains one of many of the struggles that females go through, Sittenfeld declares, "Maybe if you do sit–ups before you go to bed at night your stomach will be flat, and they'll love you well" (199). Making one assume that if she puts in the effort to exercise then her presence will be admirable. Seeing this happen every day, women trying to be someone that they are not, makes me quite furious. Not pleasing to their own eyes but to the eyes of others, women tend to need the compliments of others to enhance their own confidence that they are pleasing to the ... • 3. Summary Of Through The Mirror Of Beauty Culture When the word "beauty" is used, most people think of a female with a fit body shape, hairless body and light skin color which is wrong because of all these types of attitudes impact on a woman's life. In "Through the Mirror of Beauty Culture", Rice argues that we should rethink the concept of beauty and rely on "beauty myth". The main focus is to explore different methods of how the society and cultural visualizing have shaped women's appearance. As you may recall, the body plays a major role in a woman's life because it affects her self–esteem, psychological health and character. The author describes a variety of different types of "body projects" or "self–making projects" which people with body dissatisfaction practice to protect themselves ... • 5. The Influence Of Beauty In The Media Nowadays people are all constantly connected and surrounded by media and advertisements, it is almost impossible to avoid the ideas that media exposes, but is it all fun and games? Media and advertising are very powerful sources of both communication and information; moreover, teenagers are constantly using it and being targeted by it more than any other age group. Media influences many behaviors and ideas that teenagers have, greatly affecting them because they resort to media to learn about beauty standards and more. Often times resulting in twisted perceptions of beauty. Over time the ideal of beauty changes because it depends on what is popular/in style during that time period. In addition, some culture's beauty ideals are different from other cultures. However in every culture there is an ideal of beauty that is expected to be followed by their people. By definition beauty is "a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight." People have their own vision of beauty so anything can be seen as beauty, it just depends in the eye of the beholder. However, instead of allowing people to have their own ideal of beauty one was created for them. In American culture, beauty is centered upon body image. Advertisements and social media create and set an ideal of beauty for teenagers that is impossible to accomplish. This unachievable beauty standard can harshly affect the teens in negative ways, but it is highly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Essay on Lanval and Yonec Often times in literature the body becomes a symbolic part of the story. The body may come to define the character, emphasize a certain motif of the story, or symbolize the author's or society's mindset. The representation of the body becomes significant for the story. In the representation of their body in the works of Marie de France's lais "Lanval" and "Yonec," the body is represented in opposing views. In "Lanval," France clearly emphasizes the pure beauty of the body and the power the ideal beauty holds, which Lanval's Fairy Queen portrays. In France's "Yonec," she diverts the reader's attention from the image of the ideal body and emphasizes a body without a specific form and fluidity between the forms. They meet and separate whenever the Fairy Queen feels the need to. The Fairy Queen's beauty gives her power and control over Lanval. The concept of beauty as a method of control for women is not something new. Lori Baker–Sperry and Liz Grauerholz discuss the concept of female empowerment through beauty in their article "The Pervasiveness and Persistence of the Feminine Beauty Ideal in Children's Fairy Tale." Baker–Sperry and Grauerholz state that, "women willingly engage in 'beauty rituals' and perceive being (or becoming) beautiful as empowering, not oppressive" (712). Baker–Sperry and Grauerholz argue that in children's fairy tales, the female characters see their beauty as their most useful tool and would undergo "beauty rituals" to attain this beauty. By being beautiful, the Fairy Queen is able to win the attention and loyalty of Lanval. Not only does the Fairy Queen receive power in this bond, but also Lanval himself finds good fortune in the form of physical wealth. To further emphasize the Fairy Queen's beauty and the power she holds over the court, France uses the series of girls prior to the Fairy Queen's entrance. This builds a sense of suspense and the fact that the Fairy Queen easily trumps the girls in beauty further emphasizes her superiority. By emphasizing the Fairy Queen's bodily beauty, France is able to show the power the Fairy Queen has over Lanval and the court. While ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Beauty Is Not At The Eyes "Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart" "True beauty comes from within". The physical appearance of a person is the first thing another person notices about someone. The definition of beauty is the combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. People havecome to the conclusion that beauty is about the exterior appearance, however, true beauty is defined as the way a person acts and thinks. In today's society, many people feel the pressure in surpassing their physical appearance. Women feel their hair, makeup, and clothes need to look flawless in order to be around others. Whether they are not comfortable with their appearance without makeup, or they feel with makeup members of the opposite sex will take notice, physical appearance is important to people. Often times, men focus on a woman's physical features rather than her true beauty on the inside. Many individuals in today's world need to re–evaluate their outlook on beauty. True beauty lives within the way a person acts and feels. True beauty is not only found in people, but also in little actions and things in nature. We often take the natural beauties we see everyday for granted. Although not everyone may like snow or rain, frosty snowfalls and cool rain showers are one of natures many beauties. Rainbows are another example of nature's beauties. True beauty is defined as the way a person acts or thinks. Many actions we see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Societal Standards Of Female Beauty Media is something every female and male look to for guidance when it comes to fashion, beauty, and information. "Magazines and advertisements are used to help women better themselves by giving information and products to make them look and feel better" (Serdar 1). Without magazines and advertisements there wouldn 't be an exact focus on beauty standards.. People would have the freedom to choose what they like and what they consider beautiful instead of following the crowd. "Sociocultural standards of female beauty are in every aspect of popular media. Mass media 's use of unrealistic models sends the message that in order for a woman to be beautiful, she must be unhealthy. Women are negatively affected by the constant exposure to unrealistic media ideas of beauty"(Serdar 1). Because women of the American culture constantly compare themselves to models and actors, they push themselves to diet and exercise in an unhealthy manner to achieve a goal that is both bad for them physically and mentally. "The ideal of beauty is a form of self– oppression. Women see themselves in pieces" (Sontag 1). Because females are so self observant of themselves they tend to put more attention on things that don't actually need attention. Therefore, they feel as if their not as beautiful as a person they see on television. "Very small percent of women in western countries meet the criteria the media uses to define beauty. Naomi Wolf shows us how as women have become more liberated the standards of what makes a women considered beautiful have become stricter. Throughout her story Wolf shares with us that beauty is completely subjective in that it changes with cultures and with age. Women were actively gaining more legal and material rights through the women's movement. Wolf states, "Many women that women's collective progress has stalled; compared with the heady momentum of earlier days, there is a dispiriting climate of confusion, division, cynicism, and above all, exhaustion." Some are treated differently due to his or her aesthetically pleasing or displeasing face and is most evident in the book Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold by C. S. Lewis the three central female characters, Orual, Psyche, and Redival, are all regarded to differently based on their physical appearances and this attitude is prevalent in modern society. Orual, the narrator of the novel, is not treated as a woman due to her lack of attracting physical features in the novel and would translate into such present day. Other's perception of Orual's face makes her life difficult as people do not think she is feminine and unworthy to find a husband. • 23. The Carnal Prayer Mat by Yu Li Vesperus' masculine beauty is a central theme in Li Yu's moral comedy, The Carnal Prayer Mat. What's more, his life trajectory parallels non–Mahayana Indic accounts of Siddhartha's path to enlightenment, particularly on the emphasis placed on descriptions of both men's physical perfection and their subsequent sexual appetite and prowess. Both Vesperus' and Siddhartha's masculine beauty propels them forward on their life paths, positioning them in the simultaneously instructive and destructive feminine sphere of the inner quarter. The wealth of sexual experiences gives both men the necessary insight for their critical realization of the superficiality and emptiness of a life guided by carnal desires and sexual pursuits of women. When first meeting Vesperus, Lone Peak muses, "What a fine intelligence the man has! But the Creator is at fault for giving him this physical form. Why match a heart that was meant for the study of Buddha with a face that will lead to damnable deeds?" (Yu 21). This sentiment of beauty as a cosmic gift from higher beings is echoed in Vesperus' narcissistic self–reflection when deciding whether to take a life path of asceticism, filial piety, or sexual debauchery: "Since Heaven has given birth to someone like me, it must also have given birth to a girl fit to be my mate....That is why at twenty I am still unmarried–I want to do full justice to my genius and my looks" (Yu 25). Vesperus' wish to do "justice" to his intellectual brilliance and looks speaks to the degree to which masculine beauty is an important catalyst of sexual desire and subsequent acts of seduction and moral transgression. Lone Peak describes Buddha, the Lord of Heaven, as a doting and overly indulgent parent who has blundered in giving a favored child, Vesperus, too many blessings: By the time the boy grows up, he is convinced that his body and nature were given to him by Heaven and Earth and nurtured by his father and mother so that no harm will ever befall him, and he does any wicked thing that enters his head. • 25. Analysis Of Face It, Ladies By Elissa Strauss It Is What Is On the Inside That Counts As Amy Davis says, "True beauty lies deep within. No matter what you look like on the outside, if you know you are beautiful, nobody can change that." Society today has created a difficult beauty standard for women to attain; therefore, women feel bad about themselves if they do not fit society's ideal image. In her article, "Face it, ladies: We can't all be beautiful," author Elissa Strauss describes the impossible beauty definition we have in the world today. Strauss believes it is what is on the inside that counts. Strauss has the right idea because all women are beautiful in their own way. Some women express their beauty through intelligence and morals, while others show their beauty in a physical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Strauss states, "In recent years, labels like American Eagle Outfitters and Betabrand have hopped on the "real" wagon featuring more average–looking women in their campaigns." For example, American Eagle does not use stick thin models to display their products which makes their clothing more enticing to average women. Strauss makes a great point when she says, "Here's the thing about "real" bodies. We actually see them every day. Walk down the street. Go to a locker room. Or a beach. Real bodies are literally everywhere (except perhaps a few neighborhoods in Miami or Los Angeles). So these attempts aren't about getting us to see more real bodies – they're about getting us to engage in some communal affirmation that they are not only okay but also beautiful." "Real" bodies are prevalent compared to the ideal female body. If society could see average bodies in the same light as they see the unhealthy skinny models, women's self–esteem would grow at an astonishing rate. In the article it is stated, "How thin is too thin for real beauty? How fat is too fat?" There is no answer to this question. If you are at a healthy weight and not underweight or overweight, there is nothing wrong with the number the scale shows. John Dela Cruz Professor Shekhtman ENWR 1102 26 9 March 2015 The Importance and Appreciation of Female Beauty Beauty is the most desirable trait a woman can have. It is immediately recognized since it is a feature that is physically evident. A woman who possesses beauty is admired by others and has a higher likelihood of attracting more men, including those that are of high social class. However, not everyone who is beautiful lives a simple life. In "Little Snow White," written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Snow White's beauty leads to the envy and competition, as well as to the infatuation of a desperate prince whom she eventually marries. Although some women are beautiful, some are wiser than others. When her father asks what she wants from his trip to a fair, Cinderella requests for him to "...break off for me the first branch which knocks against your hat on your way home" (Grimm 3). One would wonder: why would anyone choose a branch for a gift? On the other hand, both stepsisters, resembling the typical materialistic teenagers in modern society, ask for beautiful dresses. It seems like a reasonable choice for the stepsisters to ask for such gifts at a fair. However, the branch Cinderella asks for grows into a tree at her mother's. A little white bird, which symbolizes the reincarnation of her deceased biological mother, visits the tree occasionally. The little white bird grants Cinderella's desires: "...if Cinderella expressed a wish, the bird threw down to her what she had wished for" (Grimm 1). Her true mother resumes her role of a caring parent in the form of a bird. Ultimately, Cinderella proves to be the wisest among the three girls. Beauty is measured through certain types of body art that is specific to each culture. Some communities measure beauty by external adornments such as the women of the Bonda tribe who dress in colorful jewelry. Other communities believe that beauty is determined by physical alterations such as the stretching of necks in Thailand. Varying cultural perceptions and beliefs result in different definitions of beauty. Although each achieveculture has their own idea of beauty they serve a common purpose; to visually and uniformly assimilate to ones culture. The women of the Bonda tribe adorn themselves in beaded skullcaps, necklaces, and earrings where as the men of the Dani tribe adorn using clothing. I believe that hair and beauty is related to cultural identity. Many People can be handsome and beautiful in their own little way. Being beautiful doesn't mean to be beautiful from the outside only, but it also means to be beautiful from the inside. Your beauty is being who you are inside and out. In addition, I see hair and someone's beauty as something that is beautiful, but something that is symbolic for many reasons in society. Lots of people consider beauty to be a girl with a tight, little figure and gorgeous locks of hair cascading down her back, the type of girl that when she walks into a room, heads turn. Then there are those that consider beauty to be what's on the inside. Such as someone that puts others before themselves. Beauty can have so many different definitions, and nobody's is wrong. But beauty is out there, whether it be seen or felt. Some of the most common definitions of beauty are about what's on the outside, or external beauty. What you see when you look at someone for the first time and what you will continually notice about someone every time after that. The attractiveness halo effect, explains that people often associate good–looking people to also have good traits and qualities. Such as success, intelligence and confidence. Which is what causes the brain to see someone as even more attractive. It is believed that beauty and good qualities tend to be bunched together for a number of reasons including media, culture, and our own preferences (Radwan). The dictionary defines beauty as "the qualities in a person or a thing that give pleasure to the senses or the mind" ("Beauty"). Society has a more cruel definition of beauty. It puts pressure on women who want to appear beautiful to everyone but themselves. Naomi Wolf, author of "The Beauty Myth," wrote, "Many are ashamed to admit that such trivial concerns – to do with physical appearance, bodies, faces, hair, clothes – matter so much" (486). The concept of beauty revolves around three main ideas: Physical appearance, aging, and losing control of themselves. Girls today do not feel comfortable in their own skin and try so hard to become somebody else. She says, "The beauty myth tells a story: the quality called "beauty" objectively and universally exists. Women must want to embody it and men must want to possess women who embody it" (Wolf 488). The characters in the movie played by Meryl Streep and Anne Hatheway gave successful, working women an enticing edge when they mixed their confident attitudes with classy style. They appeal to all genders and ages because they are women who know what they want – they don't need to be naked to get it. They dress urbanely and conservatively. In a society where attractiveness is generally recognized as a woman 's most admirable quality, most women (especially those who don't fit into the beauty standard) are aware of the subtle rules for feminine appearance and behavior. • 53. What Is Beauty In Society The definition of beauty can vary between person to person. For centuries, beauty was seen to satisfy other people but oneself. Beauty can be judged on the clothes one puts on to wear, the makeup that is being used, the hairstyle that keeps up with the latest fashion and even the shape of one's body. In this generation, we are raised in an indestructible bubble of judgement. Beauty can also be seen as an ornament. People cover their Christmas trees with ornaments to make it more appealing to the eye, the same goes with human beings. Specifically females try to present themselves in ways society tells them is right. However, underneath all of the ribbons and ornaments is a simple tree with great personality. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This statement is used vigorously throughout society and is seen as an empowering statement with women. However, it should be rewritten as, beauty is in the eye of society. Society tells people how to live their life and how to present themselves in a "proper way." Nevertheless, millions of human beings are getting plastic surgery to change their outermost appearance. Starting from a nose job to botox all over the face, individuals spend so much time and money to make themselves look unrecognizable With this being said, plastic surgery is not a bad commodity, as it is all a personal choice to an individual. It enhances one's features and makes a person feel better than their best self but in reality the only element that matters is the inner beauty. Growing up in this generation, they are influenced by every person in a magazine. The combined sources of Charles Darwin's Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871), Sigmund Freud's Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex (1905), and Robert Musil's The Confusions of a Young Törless (1906) solidify beauty in all its sense as holding a strong position in the overarching history of gender and sexuality and are even more interesting to note due to their progressive nature and philosophical intimacy. These texts stretch across different subjects, time periods, and even authorial regions to explain how the concept of beauty has contributed to the history of gender and sexuality, and that contribution must be ... The beauty industry has only grown since its start. The first entrepreneurs that developed the beauty industry were men. Recipes and remedies were apprehended from their wives that were used at home to make products and print books. "The relation of inner and outer beauty was a connection of trade in drugs and elixirs. Arsenic wafers, a moderate diet, frequent bathing, and exercise were often recommended" (Peiss 17). The make up or "elixirs" women manipulated made them appear as beautiful on the outside as they were assumed to be on the inside. In addition to taking care of oneself. • 65. Girlchild Christina Piercy Analysis Professor Zednik English 102 19 October 2014 Superficial Prejudicial Sacrificial What is "beauty"? It seems that throughout centuries the definition of "beauty" has changed drastically; it is constantly being redefined. Looking back to the 1400's through the 16th century, the ideal woman of that time was, by today's definition, voluptuous and very full–figured. Ivory skin and red lips were considered very attractive. During the Victorian era, women strived to have a small 12" tummy; they wore tightly laced corsets, sometimes risking their health, to achieve a cinched waist. Women were very conservative with their makeup and preferred a very natural look. As time progressed, the roaring 20's brought new sexy trends. Women tried to hide their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marge Piercy selectively combines the two words "girl" and "child" because both are typically symbols of innocence. Many see, and possibly even participate in, shaming girls for being less than beautiful. Piercy pushes to make a point that although it's common, it isn't right. Once girls reach a certain age around puberty, their perceptions are altered and are also easily influenced. In the poem, the "girlchild" is persuaded that there is something wrong with her outer appearance, so "she went to and fro apologizing" (11). Not only was the "girlchild" brainwashed into thinking she was inadequate being herself, but her peers were also programmed into believing that there is a standard of universal "beauty" that everyone should strive to attain. Today, many young girls are exactly like the "girlchild"; they are raised from children to fit a specific criterion on how they should look and behave. The standards may change, but they all demand that the "girlchild" become someone, or something, that she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Ideal Female Body Vs. Aerie's Real Beauty For almost 50 years, it has been a growing trend for women to be ultra thin. A tiny waist, large hips, and flat stomach are the characteristics of an ideal female body. (Suhay 1.) Though there are many campaigns and battles for women to be "their own beautiful selves", there are even larger campaigns for ultra thin, unhealthy lifestyles that are not usually made public by large companies and corporations. Dove launched its "Love Yourself " campaign in 2004. It flew almost unnoticed until 2013 when Abercrombie and Fitch's CEO's interview from 2006 resurfaced. He stated that he didn't want "uncool" and "fat" kids wearing his clothes. Everyone hit back with anti body–shaming campaigns, blogs, Youtube channels, websites, and posters. Although these campaigns are taking over the internet, huge companies and corporations still have their ideas of a perfect female body. (Schreiber 2.) These companies' ads and posters are known to make young women and young men feel like they are inferior to company models. After spending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Suhay 1). People don't seem to notice how upsetting it really is. On the internet end of the spectrum, fitspo and thinspo are taking over the web. Many blogs show that society glamorizes being ultra thin. "100 years of" videos are taking over the internet and are always featured with picture perfect male and female body images. • 71. The Image Of Female Beauty Mary J. Blige once stated " I know who I am. I am perfect. I'm not the most beautiful women. But I am one of them." Beauty is a word that holds different means for everyone but with this word it can change the life of many. Being beautiful in today 's society is something that many women strive to be disregarding their own uniqueness and filling this void they feel with procedures and other things. This is the cause of many insecurities to arise in women of all ages which can affect their self–esteem and confidence in being their self such as in the poem by Katie Makkai when she asks if she is pretty and worthy. Why is it so hard to abandon this notion that beauty is only in a select few? Once you embrace yourself you can be unique and more happy and contented in life instead of hiding behind a fake mask .Beauty should not determine how one is perceived but instead beauty should be embraced and accepted in all people. The image of female beauty is changing everyday because the media portrays the unrealistic and modified images of what beauty is. This is linked to insecurities women feel about their body image, hair color, skin, eyes, and many other parts of their anatomy.Claire Mysko stated "While social media is not the cause of low self–esteem, it has all the right elements to contribute to it, Social media creates an environment where disordered thoughts and behaviours really thrive." Social Media has caused many thoughts that make women want to change themselves to fit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A corrective measure for altered photos, would be to use the most natural looking pictures in which minimal or no makeup is worn as well as using 'before' picture of a published photo ('before' relating to the image before photoshop). The only fix a differing perception of beauty based on aesthetic surgery is to used photos of celebrities who have not had plastic surgery. This can be determined by research or news interviews with the celebrity regarding plastic surgery or facial features they have aesthetically altered. The focus group, the 50 individuals rating the attractiveness of celebrities, biasedly rating individuals is difficult to prevent. The individuals rating the celebrities could be constantly reminded to base rates primarily on attractiveness and by asking a varying group of people to rate the individuals to get the opinion of a mock society. However, a more accurate solution to this problem would be to have surveyors rate photos of random individuals that they have more than likely never had exposure to or contact with. This would ensure that bias does not get in the way of collecting an accurate average rate of attractiveness. Incorrect measurements ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Female Cancer Patients Negating Social Ideas of Beauty My research topic is "How can female cancer patients successfully negotiate social ideas of beauty", I have chosen this question as a research topic as two of my family members have recently suffered from and lost their lives to this disease and I want to develop my knowledge of the disease and how it may lead to other health problems. I have chosen to target the theme of beauty as the changes induced by both the disease and the treatment are often visible, which sometimes lead to mental health problems or feelings of great dissatisfaction. Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and invade other tissues; the disease can spread to other parts of the body through the circulatory and lymph systems.
