Arun Verma- Lays Potato Chips
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 'In revitalising the brand, the goal is not only to generate added sales
levels but to have them based upon enhanced equity, a move which involves improved recognition,
enhanced perceived quality, changed associations, an expanded customer base and increased loyalty.
'
David A. Aaker – Professor of Marketing Strategy at University of California at Berkeley.
This is a story of risk and reward. About having the guts to effectively withdraw the Hostess Brand
from the market, even though it was Canada's largest snack food trademark and the company 's
flagship brand – in favour of replacing it with an old, weak brand – and then making that old brand
the national leader, in its first year. The salty snacks market is ... Show more content on

We needed advertising that would change perceptions immediately. If not, we would leave tens of
millions of dollars in Lay 's stales on shelf. This led to the four following advertising imperatives. 1.
2. 3. 4. Make Lay 's a brand Hostess buyers want. Make Lay 's highly visible and appealing, to draw
in new users. Create the conditions for long–term brand loyalty to Lay 's. Fulfill the global strategy,
while giving Lay 's a Canadian personality.
STRATEGY AND EXECUTION Year I – the insight
Lay 's global strategy took the high ground of taste. But we also learned that chips are an
indulgence. So, we decided to dimensionalise taste through 'irresistibility. '2
Year I – the creative idea
We had to deal with Lay's low awareness and poor image. We needed a high impact idea that would
deliver brand esteem – a higher regard for the brand. This would be essential for taking consumers
through the sequence: esteem > trial > attitude shift. You can 't ask for esteem, the consumer must
give it to you. Advertising must be entertaining, involving and memorable. We decided on an
appealing and carefully researched brand representative – Mark Messier. He turned 'irresistibility '
into the Lay 's wager:
Betcha can 't eat just one! This was great taste and irresistible indulgence, told with impact and
fun. But impact can be a double edged sword if it leads to fast wear out. So

Harvey Wallbanger Essay
Introduction:
Harvey Wallbanger, president of Harvey Wallbanger Popcorn, entered the popcorn market in 1972.
He is considered to be the person most responsible for creating a gourmet popcorn market in the
United States. His claim to fame is that his corn is lighter, fluffier, "tenderer", and bigger than
ordinary popcorn. He also boasts that his popcorn has fewer hard, unpopped kernels than
competitive products.
Harvey's company sells popcorn to several markets in the United States:
1. Unpopped corn sold to food stores for the consumer to take home. There are several companion
products– flavoured seasoning, cooking oil– and a variety of different size packages including a
sealed cooking bag with popcorn, oil, and flavouring for use in a ... Show more content on

The only popcorn he could find, besides some stale bagged corn in supermarkets, was caramel corn
which wasn't very popular. Wallbanger believes there is a great opportunity in Great Britain as a
whole. The British are big snackers, they visit pubs on a frequent basis, and they are great TV
watchers. He wants to explore the possibility of expanding into Great Britain. At the moment, he is
thinking about exporting his franchise gourmet–shop operation and licensing stores to sell his brand
of popcorn. Although he is open to suggestions of other possibilities, he is sure, as he told his board
of directors, that "Harvey Wallbanger Popcorn will have a major investment in Great Britain within
two years". As his staff assistant, you have been selected to do a preliminary evaluation of the
opportunities and problems of selling popcorn in Great Britain, which will be used in the decision
whether to enter the British snack market.
The British Market:
The British make a distinction between savoury (spicy and salty) snacks and sweet snacks. Savoury
snacks in Britain include a wide variety of flavoured potato crisps, extruded snacks such as Bugles,
and salted peanuts. Snacking on potato crisps or salted peanuts while drinking beer, especially in
pubs, is very traditional social behaviour. Snacks are purchased as a companion product to beer and
are bought in pubs and in grocery stores for home

Multigrain Chips
Thesis/Claim: Something alien to the world of multigrain taste. Pringles tries to show their viewers
that their product gives a different and better taste than other products. They show bright fields to
imply that their product uses more natural ingredients. Because natural ingredients should improve
the taste of food, the use of these images act as evidence that Multigrain Pringles tastes better and
different than other products. This advertisement, however, lacks evidence that truly explains how
this product improves from the original and how this product classifies as multigrain. Pringles uses
images of corn field with crop circles to convince the reader that Pringles differs from other
products. The meaning of the word alien in this case, however, differs from the meaning that the
claim attempts to use. Pringles uses this equivocation to imply their product's improvement while
also drawing attention away from their lack of evidence. Due to their lack of evidence and Pringle's
use of the equivocation fallacy, the claim loses believability.
Contention: Pringle's advertisement lacks evidence that supports the idea that their product tastes
different. They use crop circles to emphasize on the idea of difference to draw attention away from
the actual concept of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These multigrain chips only lose 10 calories from the original chip and the supposed multigrain chip
contains mainly the same ingredients plus additives of a little barley flour and less than two percent
of black beans. These additives allow Pringles to classify their product as multigrain. Despite the
common misconception, however, this does not mean that the product comes from more natural
ingredients or better ingredients. Pringles plays into this misconception by acting like their
multigrain product helps people live healthy much more so than their original

Osmosis
Introduction
I obtained my scientific knowledge from the "AQA science: double award modular." This is an
experiment that will explore the osmosis theory
To make this experiment safe I will wear goggles to protect my eyes and also will make sure that
when using the borer to cut the potato I have a white tile underneath.
The experiment will be a fair test as I will keep the weight of the cut potato the same throughout the
water and sugar solutions. I will try to keep the potatoes surface area and volume the same. I will
make sure that both pieces of potato are placed in their solutions at the same time and pulled out
together. I will make the weight of the potatoes the same by ... Show more content on

Example:
[IMAGE][IMAGE][IMAGE][IMAGE][IMAGE][IMAGE]In the root–hair cell of a plant the
surrounding soil will have a more concentrated water solution than inside the cell, thus leading to
the water solution in the soil osmosing into the root–hair cell. The cell which is next to the root hair
cell is separated by the partially permeable membrane. This leads to the more concentrated water
solution in the root hair cell osmosing into the cell next to it. This procedure of osmosis through the
cells carries on until the cells reach the xylem. The xylem finally carries the water solution upwards
to the areas that need it.
I have decided to vary the amount of sugar solution (%) in which the potato chip is placed in. I am
using this variable as I think it will give a good range of results because unlike changing the size of
the potato this should prove that the theory of higher concentration to a lower concentration is right.
To ensure accuracy I will use equipment such as the top pan balance to measure the weight of the
potatoes accurately. I will also use a pipette to measure the about of solution I put into the test tubes.
The drop sizes of the solution vary so I will try and keep them roughly the same size but there
possible could be some inaccuracy located. I will use a borer to cut parts of the potato and a white

Frito-Lay Vs Frito Lay
I am the type of person that when I enter a store, I search for the sales, the deals, and strictly for the
bargains. There are many times that I will choose the "generic" version or store brand of foods and
household items over the name brands. This is never the case with chips and snacks that Frito–Lay
offers where I always find myself without hesitation grabbing their brands and putting them into my
shopping basket. I have tried in the past with store and generic brands but can never find a single
one that comes close to the desirable taste and satisfaction that I get from Frito–Lay products. Frito–
Lay today is a subsidiary of PepsiCo. Their brands account for 59% of the U.S snack chip industry
(Frito–Lay, 2014). Several snack foods and brands are produced under Frito–Lay. Many well–
known brands are Lay's potato chips, Frito corn chips, Cheetos, Ruffles, Doritos, and Tostitos tortilla
chips. They have ranked on Forbes World's Most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For me and for many other loyal consumers, there are no other snack food products in the market
that compare. While I opt for deals and store brands for most products, I can never replace Frito–
Lay brands. Takis were very popular when they first came to the United States market and Frito–Lay
successfully positioned itself in that market segment with Dorito Dinamitas. They offer many
premium brands as well as low–priced brands. Cracker Jacks were repositioned to be aimed at value
shoppers (Strom, 2012). Their contests succeed in making consumers feel that they have a voice in
their brand and in turn will become more loyal. Their continued licensing agreements with other
firms will help to make a name for themselves across many other markets. The Doritos Locos Tacos
have been very successful for their Dorito brand. Brands protect from competition and as this paper
has shown, Frito–Lay has been very successful in their branding

The Truth Behind the Bag: Frito Lay Chips and Other Snacks...
The Truth Behind the Bag Doritos, Lays, Hot Cheetos, Fritos, Takis, These are a few of the many
different kind of chips there are in the world, But why are we so obsessed with the consumption of
this product? Eating chips is not a bad thing as long as you can control the quantity of what you eat.
Chips tend to be addicting and recent research confirms that some chips contain an ingredient that
may cause cancer. But my main point is to reveal the truth about the danger of eating spicy chips;
Flaming Hot Cheetos in particular, and how it can affect your body and health. We all know that
chips are not the greatest thing to be eating all the time. Most chips are high in sodium, they have
high fructose corn syrup and they contain a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When you get a small break and you run to the vending machine and buy chips and that's all you eat
well that is not very healthy. Your body is feeding off the carbs and sugars you just ate instead of
consuming the nutrients it needs from a healthy snack. The bad thing about Chips is that they are
available everywhere. Schools banned some chips from being sold in vending machines in campus.
Which were replaced by the same kind of chips but in a baked version which is meant to be a
healthier kind. Let's put Doritos for example, looking at only the calories and sodium per serving
between the original and the baked version. The original version has 140 calories and 210 mg of
sodium, the baked version has 120 calories that is 20 calories less than the original, and 230 mg of
sodium. That is 20 mg more sodium than the original one. It might be fewer calories, but it is more
sodium. So if the baked version is supposed to be a healthier version why can't we see a dramatic
change? There is a difference between both of them, but the change is minimal. That was the
schools solution to encourage students to eat healthier, but in most schools they have a "student
store". In the student store they typically sell snacks, and candy and drinks. In that store they sell the
original chips they do not sell in the vending machines. So why go through all that trouble of not
selling those types of chips when you could go to the student store

How Do People Manipulate Pop Chips?
"Nothing fake about 'em," writes this ad for pop chips, yet everything about this ad is fake. The ad
has Katy Perry holding a Pop Chip bag in each hand, covering her chest. She smiles as she looks up
and to the right of the camera, making her appear fun and whimsical. A quote appears above head
her stating "i'm not into phonies, good thing there is nothing fake or phony in popchips. they only

Perry's dress. Every aspect of this ad, from the bright blue colors and funny tagline to the famous
Katy Perry and her very real potato chips has been carefully thought through by expert advertisers
who know how to manipulate the reader into buying Pop Chips. These expert advertisers have
gotten advertising down to a science. Every single aspect of this advertisement that you could

The Pop Chip advertisement utilizes these tactics; focusing on the attack on body image. The potato
chips are "all natural" and only "taste like they are bad for you." The advertisement also makes sure

information to include in the advertisement because they know that these words will force the
readers to think about their own body image. The ad wants you to think that maybe if you stopped
eating unhealthily and ate more pop chips, you could look as attractive as Katy Perry and then
everyone will want to be your friend. As absurd as the degree to which they might affect a person
might sound, the level of sensitivity that people have towards themselves impedes them from
thinking rationally about the absurdness of what such advertisements

Frito Lay Research Paper
Frito–Lay is an international snacks company, and a subsidiary of Pepsi–Cola since 1965, whose
headquarters is located at Plano, Texas. The Frito – Lay website (www.FritoLay.com) has an format
that its easy to use, and also shows the colors of their logo. The Frito – Lay has become a multi–
billion leading manufacture in snack producer, having more than 50,000 employees, and over 40
different product lines, from which 7 of those have sales over a billion dollars each. To mention
some of its primary goods, which are: Lay's potato chips, Doritos, Cheetos cheese–flavored snacks,
Tostitos tortilla chips, and Fritos corn chips. Other services that they provide online vary from
nutrition facts, recipes, and shopping directly from the company.
The reason why I decided to research on Frito – Lay's is because it is one of the popular products
when doing grocery shopping and at local convenient stores. What might surprised us the most
about Frito – Lay's is the extensive history this company has in the United States, going through the
Great Depression, and World War II. Frito – Lays vision is all about the fun – from making tasty

The sides of the potato are not flatten which means have to take precaution while cutting down the
sides of the potato to make potato chips therefore use a potato tile to make the experiment safe.
Process/Method: I will use the following procedures to achieve the result for my experiments.
1. I will cut 3 potato chips of roughly the same size using a borer.
2. I will then cut the potato chips with the help of the ruler and scalpel and name the three chips as
test 1,2,3.
3. Then, I will measure 25 ml of sucrose concentration using a measuring cylinder.
4. Label 3 beaker as test 1,2,3 then weigh each of potato using a scale balance, I will then put each
of potato chips in a different beaker according to their label.
5. Start the timer.
6. After 10 minutes, I will take all potato chips out of beakers and put onto a tissue paper to dry the
potato chips.
7. Repeat the process for each of the other concentration of sucrose solution.
8. Record all my result in a suitable table stating their initial mass, final mass, mass change and
percentage mass change.
9. Take an average for the 3 test and record my result in a table in order to use those data to draw a

Necco Wafers Research Paper
In 1847, with Oliver Chase's invention of the lozenge cutter, the famous Necco Wafers were born.
Necco Wafers quickly became an American favorite with eight flavors to enjoy: orange, lemon,
lime, clove, chocolate, cinnamon, licorice, and wintergreen. Aside from consumption, Necco Wafers
have also been used as poker chips, for first communion practice, and even as bulls–eyes at target
ranges. Four billion Necco Wafers are produced each year, and if placed edge–to–edge, would wrap
around the world twice. In the early 1900's, Necco Wafers came in handy for more than just
gingerbread house decorations. For example, in 1913, Donald MacMillan, an arctic explorer, gave
eskimo children the American candy on his expedition. In the 1930's, two and a half tons of this
chalky candy were included on Admiral Byrd's two year journey in the Antarctic, enough for each of
member of his crew to consume a pound of wafers each week. Since Necco Wafers did not melt and
rarely broke during transport, during World War II, the American government sent massive amounts
of these candies overseas to soldiers. Although World War II veterans were not the first soldiers to

flavors are mixed together and workers pack them in rows that are then packaged. These rolls of
Necco Wafers are then sold year round everywhere from convenience stores to online, or even in

Investigate the Osmosis of Potato Cells in Various Salt Solutions
Introduction
I have been asked to investigate the effect of changing the concentration of a solution on the
movement of water into and out of potato cells. I will be able to change the input of my experiment.
The input variable will be the concentration of the solution. The
100% solution is sodium chloride dissolved in water (salt water).
This will be referred to as the 100% solution from now on. But the type of solution is not important
as Osmosis is all about differences in concentrations. The output variable will be the weight of the
potato chips, the movement of the water into and out of the potato.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semi–permeable

This is what happens when a plant dies. The water leaves it by Osmosis and the plant wilts and dies.
Planning
Firstly here is a list of equipment I used:
· Boiling tubes
· Weighing scales
· Knife
· Paper towels
· 100% solution
· 0% solution (distilled water)
· measuring beakers
· potato chips
· Cork borer
We planned to start our experiment by doing some preliminary work. We planned to set up our
experiment in the following way. We take one potato and cut from it three even potato chips. (These
potato chips will never be the same weight as we had to cut them ourselves and it is too inaccurate.
So we decided to calculate the percentage gain/loss as this would mean that the measurements are
all on the same scale.) We then would weigh the potato chips on a very sensitive weighing scale.
These weighing scales can weigh things to a hundredth of a gram so our measurements would be
very accurate. We'd note down the weights. Then we'd got our solutions ready. We were only given a
100% solution and a 0% solution so we had to mix them in the right ratio to get all the solutions we
needed. We decided to do 5 different types of solutions so we would have a wide range of results
and it would be more accurate. We'd use 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 0% solutions in our experiment.
But for preliminary work we would only need three different strength solutions. These were the
absolute max the absolute zero and the middle, 100%, 50% 0% solutions.
We'd cut three potato chips weighed

This tells that couponing seems to be a good way to entice shoppers into making 1st time purchases

40% of potato chips were purchased on some deal. This trend tells us that although this product may
be a low involvement purchase, at the same time it seems that a vast majority will take the time to

As an implication this may take away from our profit margin, but as we'll talk about later we see
slight room for a price increase, but still using these type of promotions making the customer still
feel like they're getting a good deal, if it helps increase sales this should overall increase profits as

SWOT Analysis: Julius Pringles
Executive Summary
China is an attractive market for snack companies with its growing demands and purchasing power.
However, the competitions from local and foreign firms are stiff. Pringles after acquired by Kellogg
has been adopting aggressive strategy to increase its market share in China. However, lacking of
promotion and online integration of its distribution network, its differentiated product features
cannot be delivered. Hence, it is recommended to adopt more online marketing strategies to increase
interaction with customers, which can at the same time enhance its brand image. On the other hand,

Pop Chips Advertisement Analysis
No one likes a phony, and that is exactly what Pop Chips is trying to convey in its advertisement. In
today's world, it is hard to tell the real things from the fake things especially with all the different
advertisements. The company called Bloomberg published this Pop Chips advertisement on
September 6, 2012. They created it because the first celebrity endorsement with Ashton Kutcher had
failed. The company decided to try again with the more bubbly personality of Katy Perry. The
background, chip bags, and Katy Perry's dress are all blue. Katy Perry's face has a look of pure joy
and happiness for these all–natural chips. Katy Perry is looking up to the left at the words "nothing
fake about 'em". Underneath those words, there is a quote from Katy Perry. She states how she does

Good thing there's nothing fake or phony in Pop Chips. They only taste like they're bad for you."
When Katy Perry says this, she is implying that there is nothing fake about her, and that she is all–

injections that way the consumer can look just like Katy Perry. If the consumer can look like Katy
Perry, then people will notice them more, and the other people's eyes will be on them. This is how
the advertisers reach the consumers' need for attention.
By having Katy Perry hold the Pop Chip bags in front of her chest, it draws the consumers' eye to
her breasts. That, along with the text, makes the implication that Katy Perry has real breasts and
does not have breast implants. Katy Perry is showing that she needs attention from others to make
her happy and feel good about herself. This creates the notion in the consumers' mind that they need
or want the same kind of attention that Katy Perry is getting in this

Chips Ahoy: Color Analysis
First, Lay's Classic chips are in a bright yellow bag. Yellow is an effective color because it grabs the
shopper's eye because of its brightness. Also, the bag illustrates how a potato is sliced into the final
form of chips. This illustration persuades the shopper that chips come from potatoes; therefore, are
still healthy. Again, Coca–Cola uses the color red as an attractive color. Like Ketchup, the color red
is a warm comfortable color for the audience; therefore, sellers exploit this color in order to make
the shopper feel comfortable buying the product. In the same way, Chips Ahoy uses both the colors
red and blue for its marketing method. Similar to Oreos, Chips Ahoy both use the calm and cold
color blue to persuade the buyer. Reese's

Pass the Potato Chips Essay
Pass the Potato Chips
Has mankind discovered some fantastic substitute for fat to enable people to eat as many snacks as
possible without gaining weight? Recently, Proctor & Gamble developed Olestra (sucrose
polyester), a zero calorie fat–based substitute, at a cost of $200 million. This product has been
approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) with warning labels.
What is olestra?
The olestra molecule differs from a fat molecule in that it has six to eight fatty acids on a sucrose
core, as opposed to three fatty acids on a glycerol core. The bulkier olestra molecule is not digested,
absorbed , or metabolized, and thus provides no calories" (Stern & Hermann–Zaidins ,1992 ). It has
the same taste and texture of fat, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Are there any side effects?
There are some interesting drawbacks to olestra. Olestra causes diarrhea and affects the absorption
of Vitamins A, D, E, and K. In essence, olestra acts like a giant sponge, taking nutrients out of the
body before they have a chance to be absorbed in the intestines. "Olestra may cause abdominal
cramping and loose stools in some individuals, and inhibits the body's absorption of certain fat–
soluble vitamins and nutrients," said Commissioner of Food and Drugs, David A. Kessler, M.D. (
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/NEW00524.html). In one study, almost one–half of the group
reported having diarrhea, bloating, and gas disturbances after eating eight grams of olestra, the
equivalent of less than the amount of olestra in one ounce of potato chips
(http://plainfield.bypass.com/%7Etwilbur/olestra.html). Since olestra blocks Vitamins A, D, E, and
K, these nutrients cannot protect us against disease. The FDA requires that Vitamins A, D, E, and K
be added to all products with olestra. Olestra also blocks the absorption of beta–carotene. Foods rich
in beta–carotene, such as sweet potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, and many other fruits and vegetables
protect the immune system, and act as a buffer against cancer and heart disease. "Studies have
shown that eating even a small snack bag of olestra–fried potato chips can reduce blood levels of
beta–carotene by 60%"

Potato Chip Calorimetry Lab
Calorimetry Lab
Introduction: As heat is released from an endothermic reaction, the heat is absorbed by another
substance, as energy, in this case heat, cannot be created nor destroyed. Through calorimetry and
enthalpy, the amount of energy absorbed by another substance can be measured using the equation
q=mcΔT, with the amount of energy in Joules equaling the mass, specific heat, and temperature
change of a substance, as in this experiment, with the heat released from the combustion of the
potato chip causing the temperature of the water above it to dry.
Purpose: The purpose of the calorimetry lab is to investigate the amount of energy in Calories
produced when a potato chip is consumed, in this case by fire.
Hypothesis: If the temperature of the chip rises, the temperature of the water above it will absorb
some of the energy released by the endothermic reaction of the burning potato chip.
Raw Data/ Results/ Observations: An increase in the mass of the potato chip resulted in an increase
in temperature change, with the height of the water above the flame produced by the burning chip
remaining constant. Although there was ½ gram more water in the second experiment, the ... Show

Effect of Concentration on Osmosis
Aim
To find out how the concentration of sucrose solution affects the mass of the potato chip left in the
solution for one day.
Prediction
I predict that when the sucrose concentration is low the potato chip will gain mass. This is because
there will be a higher sucrose concentration in the potato chip so water will go into the potato from
the solution. I predict that when there is a high concentration of sucrose the potato will lose mass.
This is because there is a higher concentration of sucrose solution in the solution compared to that in

I will measure their length with a ruler in mm and their mass on the scales in g. I will have two
potato chips in each test tube so that I can take an average of the two masses and lengths at each
concentration to make it more accurate. The independent variable will be the concentration of the
sucrose solution. I will do the experiment at five different levels of concentration; 1mol, 0.75 mol
0.5 mol, 0.25 mol, 0 mol.
Each of the solutions will be 20ml. 1mol = 20ml sucrose
0.75mol = 15ml sucrose and 5ml distilled water
0.5mol = 10ml sucrose and 10ml distilled water
0.25mol = 5ml sucrose and 15ml distilled water
0mol = 20ml distilled water
I will make sure that all the potato chips are the same length and width by cutting them with the
same borer and measuring their lengths and cutting them to all be equal. I will not leave and potato
peel on the ends of any of them as this may not let water through as easily. I will put them all in the
test tubes at the same time and get them out at the same time so as they all have the same length of
time in the solution. I will keep them all inn the same place so they all have the same temperature
and light. Once I have got them out I will gently pat them dry, as I do not want to include the liquid
on them as their mass. I will measure each of

The brand is always coming out with new exciting flavors, but the Nacho Cheese flavor has been a
classic favorite. The company has recently decided to change up the classic by producing a 30–

A few years ago, Doritos partnered up with Taco Bell to create the new Doritos Locos Tacos. This
was a great hit with both companies and is still very popular today. Taco Bell simply gave customers
an option to buy tacos with a taco shell made from Doritos tortilla chips. It is promotions and
changes like these that make it easier for the company to engage in non–price competition. Doritos
need to stay as cheap as they can because the target market is young college students and children.
There is also no specific tax on the product because they are simply chips and only general sales
taxes apply. The price of the chip stays relatively cheap because if the price was raised, then their
target market would buy the cheaper chips that are similar to the product. Rather than raising prices,
the company tries to sell more of their product by simply being different. Doritos also chooses to not
discriminate pricewise. Much of the product is sold at the same price, regardless of location. Prices
tend to vary based on how much of the product is being sold (or by bag sizes). Even the production
of these tortilla chips is relatively cheap. According to Jeff Smith, author of the GRIID, a 99–cent
bag of Doritos costs about 01 cents to produce. Along with the process of production, the
government really does not have much to do with the price or how the chips are produced. The FDA

In this case, the tiny holes in the membrane of the potatoes will allow the water molecules to pass
through in and out of the solution and the potato, depending on the concentration gradient of the two
substances. So in this case, when the water concentration is lower, the water will go inside the
potato, and the potato will gain mass. If there is very little different in the two water concentrations,
there shouldn't be such a big change in mass.
Also if there is a higher concentration of water in the potato, then the water will go out of the potato
and into the liquid solution, as osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of high
concentration to a region of low concentration, through a partially permeable membrane.
Preliminary Plan
1. Two test tubes and put them in a test tube rack
2. Fill both test tubes with the same amount of water about 1/3 of the way full.
3. In one of the test tubes add sugar and mix it in with the water
4. Label this test tube sugar

Investigate how the Concentration of a Sucrose Solution...
Investigate how the Concentration of a Sucrose Solution affects the Rate of Osmosis
Introduction:
Diffusion is the movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration until they
are spread out evenly. An example of diffusion is when an aerosol is sprayed. The particles spread
out from the high concentration at the nozzle into the rest of the room and that is how the smell
moves.
Osmosis is the passage of water molecules from a weaker solution to a stronger solution through a
partially permeable membrane. Osmosis is a type of diffusion involving water – the water molecules
move from a weak solution (with a high concentration of water) into a strong solution (with a low
concentration of water).

The reason I predict that three will increase in mass and two decrease is because in my preliminary
experiment this was shown to be the case in these concentrations, however this could change in my
real experiment.
The chips that increase in mass have taken on more water which means that at the beginning of the
experiment the sucrose solution had a higher concentration of water than the chip and this is likely
to apply to the weaker sucrose solutions as they have a low concentration of sugar and therefore a
high percentage of water molecules. The strong sucrose solutions have a higher percentage of sugar
molecules and therefore a lower percentage of water molecules and if the concentration of water in
the potato chip is higher than in the solution then water will leave the potato chip by osmosis and
therefore the chip will lose mass. The water molecules move into cells that contain a lower
concentration due to the difference in osmotic potential between cells. The water molecules move
through a semi–permeable membrane (the cell membrane) which has big enough holes in it to let
through the small water molecules, but not the bigger sucrose molecules. At a certain concentration
of sucrose solution the concentration of water will be the same in both the chip and the solution
which means there will be no transferral of water between the

Investigate the Water Potential of Potato Cells
Introduction
In my investigation, I hope to determine the water potential of potato cells. The plant material I will
use in my investigation will be potato chips, which I will cut myself prior to the investigation.
I hope to find the concentration of a solution where the chip stays the same mass and length, which
will tell me that the water potential inside the cells is the same as the water potential outside the
cells.

the case of this experiment, the sucrose molecules cannot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I will measure the length and cross–sectional area for each chip.
o Time the chip is left in the solution – I think that if I were to leave the chips in the solution for
only a small amount of time there might not be sufficient time for the osmosis to occur, so that the
chips would not differ in size enough for conclusive results. Therefore, I will need to give a good
amount of time for the osmosis to occur.
o Temperature – I believe that all reactions happen quicker when there is a higher temperature, so
diffusion across the membrane may be faster at higher temperature.
o Concentration of sucrose solution – I think that the lower the concentration of the external sucrose
solution, the more the chip will expand (because the cells become turgid).
o Total Volume of sucrose solution – I think that changing the volume of sucrose solution may affect
the results of my investigation.
Variable I will change:–
I will change the concentration of sucrose solution in my experiment, because I believe the results of
that experiment will tell me the water potential of the potato cells.
Fair Test
I will carry out all my experiments at the same temperature, 20°C, because that is room temperature,
and I will not have to heat up anything. I will cut my chips to the same dimensions every time, using

My Family Vacation
A vacation is meant to be a time for serenity and relaxation. In my case it was the complete
opposite, but it changed me for the better. Five years ago a family vacation to Jamaica changed the
way I saw everything and made me appreciate the people I love and where I come from. It all started
with the worst airplane ride. About thirty minutes into the ride the flight attendant started going
around offering snacks. These purple potato chips caught my eye so that's what I decided to get. I
should have known something so bright couldn't have been good to eat. I instantly regretted eating
the chip after taking a bite out of that awfully weird tasting potato chip because immediately after, I
felt a striking pain in my lower abdomen. I tried to relieve the pain by loosening the seat belt buckle.
I drank ginger ale, tried to position myself differently to feel less discomfort but nothing helped. My
brother was too busy on his I–pad to care, my other brother was too young to formulate proper
sentences and my mom was too far gone in her sleep, she couldn't have been any help fresh out of
slumber. I just rocked back and forth releasing "oohs" and "ah's" here and there because the pain
was intolerable. I kept on for the remaining three–hour flight weeping and wincing, trying to keep
quiet so I wouldn't disturb anyone. Landing in Jamaica was supposed to be exciting, but how could I
be excited when I was in pain. My mom, two younger brothers and I were waiting for my uncle to
arrive and take us to his house, so I took this opportunity to tell my mom what was going on. She
believed that it might just be cramps so she buys me two bottles of ginger beer which is like the
ginger ale of Jamaica, So I drank and I drank and I drank but nothing happened. My uncle finally
arrived after 15 minutes of chugging down the ginger beer. We were settling in my uncle's house and
my mom tried everything she could to make me feel better. She made tea, gave me more ginger
beer, and a hot pack for my stomach but nothing worked. After my mom and uncle tried everything
they could think of they finally came to the conclusion that it was time to bring me to the doctor.

Case Study Of Demand For Fresh Potatoes
Demand for Fresh Potatoes:
Given the lack of reliable production and consumption data these are illustrative estimates only.
Future demand is derived using projected population statistics of 2002. The population in 2002 was
25 million and the population growth between 1991 & 2002 was 3.2 %, and by 2015 the projected
population growth as per an estimate would rise to 35 million. We also assume that potato demand
equals supply as there is no external potato trade between Uganda and other
Countries in the region. This would mean that any impact achieved through the adoption of new
Technologies, improved marketing or accelerated urbanisation would increase demand levels.

Close Reading Potato Chips
To read is "to look at and understand the meaning of letters, words, symbols, etc." That is the official
definition of the word "read". If we apply this definition to our day–to–day reading, then we barely
scratch the surface of a deeper meaning behind what we read. Close reading or the analysis of a text,
help us, readers, furthermore understand the texts not just what appear on the surface. By using
close reading, we are more aware of how each word are chosen because they may go well together
with another word and that would set the mood, tone, and voice for the text. Before knowing about
the art of close reading, I always love to read "literary potato chips" as the article mention. I never
want to read the same book twice and it was very

The Trail-Personal Narrative
The cold air brushing up against my bare skin, the soft flakes of snow landing on top of my head.
"must keep going" I thought, "just keep going". My vision was beginning to get blurry, white
patches began to show up on the bottom of my feet. The blurriness was getting so bad I stopped my
run and began to waddle back and forth on the trail. My legs give out, my knees collapse under me
and I fall onto the soft piles of snow on either side of the trail. The long beautiful trees dripping with
snow looked like they came out of a fairy tale, the beauty was almost unrealistic. My eyes drift close
and my body shuts down from the cold. Just before my eyes are completely shut I see the creature
running across the trail its very hairy and has a long ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The stream I lay next too was crystal clear with small little fish swimming in the water. "were am I"
I wonder, scratching my head as I slowly stand up. As I look around I begin to squint my eyes, this
place is not were I was before I blacked out. The trees were almost pure white with black leaves on
each large branch. I had never seen anything like it. "someone was here" I think. There is a small hut
built into the side of a huge bolder. There was a small light coming from inside the hut but I dare not
go anywhere near that just incase it was the creature that was chasing me from home. I begin to
waddle away from were I lay however as soon as I try to make an attempt to get away I hear the
creak of a door swinging open and a loading of a gun. The bullet locking into the chamber was as
quiet as a pin drop yet sounded like a jackhammer slamming into the ground at full force. As I began
to break into a sprint I hear the loud bang of the gun releasing the bullet into the air. Before my foot
hits the ground I am thrown to the ground writhing in pain. I look down at my ankle and what I see
makes me want to throw up. Before I can examine my wound further I black out. I awake in a
strange white room with nothing but a bed and a desk in the whole room. I hear the door open and a

Textual Analysis Of An Advertisement Of Pop Chips
Pop chip Advertisement In this advertisement, there is what looks like an Indian man dressed in blue
traditional Indian attire, he's smiling and has two thumbs up. Also, he has a mustache and full hair.
He is trying to sell us as buyers to buy the chili lime potato pop chips that are in the lower right hand
corner. There is a sentence at the top of the ad that says, "these are the bombay." Bombay is a city in
Bollywood. Bollywood is like our Hollywood. Most upper class are located in Bombay. The pop
chips company used Ashton Kutcher– a celebrity to get people to buy these chips. There is a video
that goes with the advertisement and it contains Ashton Kutcher saying, "I'm Raf, a Bollywood
producer looking for the most delicious thing on the

Pablo's Life Story
First, let me tell you a story. (He was talking to his friends, which are in 6th grade like him). Hours
ago lived a man named Pablo. He had a donkey, he could not think of a name for his donkey. So you
know what he called him, he called him DONKEY!. He always had to yell when he was calling out
to his donkey, don't know why but he does that. One day when Pablo was using the bathroom, he
was reading the newspaper and found a map that was pretty big. Later that day he found out that that
map was going to lead to a legendary taco shack in the middle of nowhere. Then he met a man that
knew where to go. He told Pablo that he needed to cross the forest of the sneaky snakes, the farm of
the smelly cows, the driest desert in the world and what we've ... Show more content on

Then out of nowhere came a farmer, he asked "what you doing disrespecting my Bessie like that".
"Oh sorry... gag... ah sorry about that. We didn't know we were disrespecting your cow" said Pablo.
"Well if you aren't going buy something than go away" said Billy as he smoked something. "You
know you are not supposed to smoke right" said Pablo. "Well if little old Bessie makes this
substance, then I can smoke it" said Billy. "Ok that's enough, I am going on my way to the desert ok,
ok. Now bye" said Pablo as he was packing some of that substance in his backpack. (The substance
is something I like to call waste) when Pablo noticed a very strong smell he looked in his backpack
and saw something horrible. 4 hours later Pablo was still gaging so he tried to get to the desert and
started his long

Arun Verma- Lays Potato Chips

  • 1. Arun Verma- Lays Potato Chips EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 'In revitalising the brand, the goal is not only to generate added sales levels but to have them based upon enhanced equity, a move which involves improved recognition, enhanced perceived quality, changed associations, an expanded customer base and increased loyalty. ' David A. Aaker – Professor of Marketing Strategy at University of California at Berkeley. This is a story of risk and reward. About having the guts to effectively withdraw the Hostess Brand from the market, even though it was Canada's largest snack food trademark and the company 's flagship brand – in favour of replacing it with an old, weak brand – and then making that old brand the national leader, in its first year. The salty snacks market is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We needed advertising that would change perceptions immediately. If not, we would leave tens of millions of dollars in Lay 's stales on shelf. This led to the four following advertising imperatives. 1. 2. 3. 4. Make Lay 's a brand Hostess buyers want. Make Lay 's highly visible and appealing, to draw in new users. Create the conditions for long–term brand loyalty to Lay 's. Fulfill the global strategy, while giving Lay 's a Canadian personality. STRATEGY AND EXECUTION Year I – the insight Lay 's global strategy took the high ground of taste. But we also learned that chips are an indulgence. So, we decided to dimensionalise taste through 'irresistibility. '2 Year I – the creative idea We had to deal with Lay's low awareness and poor image. We needed a high impact idea that would deliver brand esteem – a higher regard for the brand. This would be essential for taking consumers through the sequence: esteem > trial > attitude shift. You can 't ask for esteem, the consumer must give it to you. Advertising must be entertaining, involving and memorable. We decided on an appealing and carefully researched brand representative – Mark Messier. He turned 'irresistibility ' into the Lay 's wager: Betcha can 't eat just one! This was great taste and irresistible indulgence, told with impact and fun. But impact can be a double edged sword if it leads to fast wear out. So ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Harvey Wallbanger Essay Introduction: Harvey Wallbanger, president of Harvey Wallbanger Popcorn, entered the popcorn market in 1972. He is considered to be the person most responsible for creating a gourmet popcorn market in the United States. His claim to fame is that his corn is lighter, fluffier, "tenderer", and bigger than ordinary popcorn. He also boasts that his popcorn has fewer hard, unpopped kernels than competitive products. Harvey's company sells popcorn to several markets in the United States: 1. Unpopped corn sold to food stores for the consumer to take home. There are several companion products– flavoured seasoning, cooking oil– and a variety of different size packages including a sealed cooking bag with popcorn, oil, and flavouring for use in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only popcorn he could find, besides some stale bagged corn in supermarkets, was caramel corn which wasn't very popular. Wallbanger believes there is a great opportunity in Great Britain as a whole. The British are big snackers, they visit pubs on a frequent basis, and they are great TV watchers. He wants to explore the possibility of expanding into Great Britain. At the moment, he is thinking about exporting his franchise gourmet–shop operation and licensing stores to sell his brand of popcorn. Although he is open to suggestions of other possibilities, he is sure, as he told his board of directors, that "Harvey Wallbanger Popcorn will have a major investment in Great Britain within two years". As his staff assistant, you have been selected to do a preliminary evaluation of the opportunities and problems of selling popcorn in Great Britain, which will be used in the decision whether to enter the British snack market. The British Market: The British make a distinction between savoury (spicy and salty) snacks and sweet snacks. Savoury snacks in Britain include a wide variety of flavoured potato crisps, extruded snacks such as Bugles, and salted peanuts. Snacking on potato crisps or salted peanuts while drinking beer, especially in pubs, is very traditional social behaviour. Snacks are purchased as a companion product to beer and are bought in pubs and in grocery stores for home ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Multigrain Chips Thesis/Claim: Something alien to the world of multigrain taste. Pringles tries to show their viewers that their product gives a different and better taste than other products. They show bright fields to imply that their product uses more natural ingredients. Because natural ingredients should improve the taste of food, the use of these images act as evidence that Multigrain Pringles tastes better and different than other products. This advertisement, however, lacks evidence that truly explains how this product improves from the original and how this product classifies as multigrain. Pringles uses images of corn field with crop circles to convince the reader that Pringles differs from other products. The meaning of the word alien in this case, however, differs from the meaning that the claim attempts to use. This is an experiment that will explore the osmosis theory To make this experiment safe I will wear goggles to protect my eyes and also will make sure that when using the borer to cut the potato I have a white tile underneath. The experiment will be a fair test as I will keep the weight of the cut potato the same throughout the water and sugar solutions. I will try to keep the potatoes surface area and volume the same. I will make sure that both pieces of potato are placed in their solutions at the same time and pulled out together. I will make the weight of the potatoes the same by ... Example: [IMAGE][IMAGE][IMAGE][IMAGE][IMAGE][IMAGE]In the root–hair cell of a plant the surrounding soil will have a more concentrated water solution than inside the cell, thus leading to the water solution in the soil osmosing into the root–hair cell. The cell which is next to the root hair cell is separated by the partially permeable membrane. This leads to the more concentrated water solution in the root hair cell osmosing into the cell next to it. This procedure of osmosis through the cells carries on until the cells reach the xylem. The xylem finally carries the water solution upwards to the areas that need it. I have decided to vary the amount of sugar solution (%) in which the potato chip is placed in. I am using this variable as I think it will give a good range of results because unlike changing the size of the potato this should prove that the theory of higher concentration to a lower concentration is right. To ensure accuracy I will use equipment such as the top pan balance to measure the weight of the potatoes accurately. I will also use a pipette to measure the about of solution I put into the test tubes. The drop sizes of the solution vary so I will try and keep them roughly the same size but there possible could be some inaccuracy located. There are many times that I will choose the "generic" version or store brand of foods and household items over the name brands. The Truth Behind the Bag Doritos, Lays, Hot Cheetos, Fritos, Takis, These are a few of the many different kind of chips there are in the world, But why are we so obsessed with the consumption of this product? Eating chips is not a bad thing as long as you can control the quantity of what you eat. Chips tend to be addicting and recent research confirms that some chips contain an ingredient that may cause cancer. But my main point is to reveal the truth about the danger of eating spicy chips; Flaming Hot Cheetos in particular, and how it can affect your body and health. Your body is feeding off the carbs and sugars you just ate instead of consuming the nutrients it needs from a healthy snack. The bad thing about Chips is that they are available everywhere. Schools banned some chips from being sold in vending machines in campus. Which were replaced by the same kind of chips but in a baked version which is meant to be a healthier kind. Let's put Doritos for example, looking at only the calories and sodium per serving between the original and the baked version. The original version has 140 calories and 210 mg of sodium, the baked version has 120 calories that is 20 calories less than the original, and 230 mg of sodium. That is 20 mg more sodium than the original one. It might be fewer calories, but it is more sodium. So if the baked version is supposed to be a healthier version why can't we see a dramatic change? There is a difference between both of them, but the change is minimal. That was the schools solution to encourage students to eat healthier, but in most schools they have a "student store". In the student store they typically sell snacks, and candy and drinks. In that store they sell the original chips they do not sell in the vending machines. Investigate the Osmosis of Potato Cells in Various Salt Solutions Introduction I have been asked to investigate the effect of changing the concentration of a solution on the movement of water into and out of potato cells. We planned to set up our experiment in the following way. We take one potato and cut from it three even potato chips. (These potato chips will never be the same weight as we had to cut them ourselves and it is too inaccurate. So we decided to calculate the percentage gain/loss as this would mean that the measurements are all on the same scale.) We then would weigh the potato chips on a very sensitive weighing scale.

In essence, olestra acts like a giant sponge, taking nutrients out of the body before they have a chance to be absorbed in the intestines. "Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools in some individuals, and inhibits the body's absorption of certain fat– soluble vitamins and nutrients," said Commissioner of Food and Drugs, David A. Kessler, M.D. ( http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/NEW00524.html). In one study, almost one–half of the group reported having diarrhea, bloating, and gas disturbances after eating eight grams of olestra, the equivalent of less than the amount of olestra in one ounce of potato chips (http://plainfield.bypass.com/%7Etwilbur/olestra.html). Since olestra blocks Vitamins A, D, E, and K, these nutrients cannot protect us against disease. The FDA requires that Vitamins A, D, E, and K be added to all products with olestra. Olestra also blocks the absorption of beta–carotene. Foods rich in beta–carotene, such as sweet potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, and many other fruits and vegetables protect the immune system, and act as a buffer against cancer and heart disease. "Studies have shown that eating even a small snack bag of olestra–fried potato chips can reduce blood levels of beta–carotene by 60%" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Potato Chip Calorimetry Lab Calorimetry Lab Introduction: As heat is released from an endothermic reaction, the heat is absorbed by another substance, as energy, in this case heat, cannot be created nor destroyed. Through calorimetry and enthalpy, the amount of energy absorbed by another substance can be measured using the equation q=mcΔT, with the amount of energy in Joules equaling the mass, specific heat, and temperature change of a substance, as in this experiment, with the heat released from the combustion of the potato chip causing the temperature of the water above it to dry. Purpose: The purpose of the calorimetry lab is to investigate the amount of energy in Calories produced when a potato chip is consumed, in this case by fire. Hypothesis: If the temperature of the chip rises, the temperature of the water above it will absorb some of the energy released by the endothermic reaction of the burning potato chip. Raw Data/ Results/ Observations: An increase in the mass of the potato chip resulted in an increase in temperature change, with the height of the water above the flame produced by the burning chip remaining constant. The brand is always coming out with new exciting flavors, but the Nacho Cheese flavor has been a classic favorite. The company has recently decided to change up the classic by producing a 30– ounce bag that they sell at wholesale stores, such as Costco. Because these chips are sold in such a large quantity, buyers often save more money rather than buying multiple bags of the standard size. A few years ago, Doritos partnered up with Taco Bell to create the new Doritos Locos Tacos. This was a great hit with both companies and is still very popular today. Taco Bell simply gave customers an option to buy tacos with a taco shell made from Doritos tortilla chips. It is promotions and changes like these that make it easier for the company to engage in non–price competition. Doritos need to stay as cheap as they can because the target market is young college students and children. There is also no specific tax on the product because they are simply chips and only general sales taxes apply. The price of the chip stays relatively cheap because if the price was raised, then their target market would buy the cheaper chips that are similar to the product. Rather than raising prices, the company tries to sell more of their product by simply being different. Doritos also chooses to not discriminate pricewise. Much of the product is sold at the same price, regardless of location. Prices tend to vary based on how much of the product is being sold (or by bag sizes). Even the production of these tortilla chips is relatively cheap. According to Jeff Smith, author of the GRIID, a 99–cent bag of Doritos costs about 01 cents to produce. Investigate how the Concentration of a Sucrose Solution affects the Rate of Osmosis Introduction: Diffusion is the movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration until they are spread out evenly. An example of diffusion is when an aerosol is sprayed. The particles spread out from the high concentration at the nozzle into the rest of the room and that is how the smell moves. Osmosis is the passage of water molecules from a weaker solution to a stronger solution through a partially permeable membrane. Osmosis is a type of diffusion involving water – the water molecules move from a weak solution (with a high concentration of water) into a strong solution (with a low concentration of water). The cell membrane in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason I predict that three will increase in mass and two decrease is because in my preliminary experiment this was shown to be the case in these concentrations, however this could change in my real experiment. The chips that increase in mass have taken on more water which means that at the beginning of the experiment the sucrose solution had a higher concentration of water than the chip and this is likely to apply to the weaker sucrose solutions as they have a low concentration of sugar and therefore a high percentage of water molecules. The strong sucrose solutions have a higher percentage of sugar molecules and therefore a lower percentage of water molecules and if the concentration of water in the potato chip is higher than in the solution then water will leave the potato chip by osmosis and therefore the chip will lose mass. The water molecules move into cells that contain a lower concentration due to the difference in osmotic potential between cells. The water molecules move through a semi–permeable membrane (the cell membrane) which has big enough holes in it to let through the small water molecules, but not the bigger sucrose molecules. At a certain concentration of sucrose solution the concentration of water will be the same in both the chip and the solution which means there will be no transferral of water between the two ... Five years ago a family vacation to Jamaica changed the way I saw everything and made me appreciate the people I love and where I come from. It all started with the worst airplane ride. About thirty minutes into the ride the flight attendant started going around offering snacks. These purple potato chips caught my eye so that's what I decided to get. I should have known something so bright couldn't have been good to eat. I instantly regretted eating the chip after taking a bite out of that awfully weird tasting potato chip because immediately after, I felt a striking pain in my lower abdomen. I tried to relieve the pain by loosening the seat belt buckle. I drank ginger ale, tried to position myself differently to feel less discomfort but nothing helped. My brother was too busy on his I–pad to care, my other brother was too young to formulate proper sentences and my mom was too far gone in her sleep, she couldn't have been any help fresh out of slumber. I just rocked back and forth releasing "oohs" and "ah's" here and there because the pain was intolerable. I kept on for the remaining three–hour flight weeping and wincing, trying to keep quiet so I wouldn't disturb anyone. Landing in Jamaica was supposed to be exciting, but how could I be excited when I was in pain. My mom, two younger brothers and I were waiting for my uncle to arrive and take us to his house, so I took this opportunity to tell my mom what was going on. My uncle finally arrived after 15 minutes of chugging down the ginger beer. We were settling in my uncle's house and my mom tried everything she could to make me feel better. She made tea, gave me more ginger beer, and a hot pack for my stomach but nothing worked.
