2. FRED FIEDLER AND CONTINGENCY THEORY
Closely related to the situational approach is what has become known
as contingency theory. The contingency theory of leadership was
proposed by the Austrian psychologist Fred Edward Fiedler in his
landmark 1964 article, "A Contingency Model of Leadership
Effectiveness."
The contingency theory emphasizes the importance of both the leader's
personality and the situation in which that leader operates.

3. There are two aspects of contingency theory
Task-motivated and
Relationship-motivated.
Task refers to task accomplishment, and
relationship-motivation refers to interpersonal relationships.

5. SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP
Situational leadership is a leadership style that has been developed and
studied by Kenneth Blanchard and Paul Hersey. Situational leadership
refers to when the leader or manager of an organization must adjust his
style to fit the development level of the followers he is trying to
influence.

Telling and Directing
The leader defines the roles needed to do the
job and tell followers what , where , how and when to do the tasks.
Selling and Coaching
The leader provides followers with supportive
instructions , but is also supportive.

The leader and followers share in
decisions about how best to complete a high- quality job.
Delegating
The leader provides little specific , close direction or
personal support to followers.
