23. Step 1: highlight relevant information in your source
“Confucianism developed from Confucius’s life-long concern for a humanistic
government, and a political and social order that was built firmly on the rites, li,
developed and implemented in the Zhou dynasty (1122-771 BC). Li, in Chinese
means institutional rites and norms that define and regulate political and social
behavior. Confucius’ singular contribution to this tradition was to provide a
philosophical account of the true nature of li by invoking two quintessential
Confucian notions, ren, human benevolence and yi, moral fittingness, as its
foundation of legitimacy. These elements were then woven into a coherent moral
system that is the core of Confucianism” (de Bettignies, Ip, Bai, Habisch &
Lenssen, 2011, p. 625).
24. Step 2: Make very short notes of key ideas
C = philosophical view of social order
explains and justifies social norms
2 principles: ren = benevolence; yi = appropriate moral behaviour
Step 3: Close the original book, article or web page
25. Step 4: Expand your notes into linked sentences
Confucianism is a social philosophy which attempts to explain and
justify the norms which govern social behaviour. These norms are seen
as justified when they embody two underlying moral principles: ren,
which means ‘benevolence’ and yi, which can be translated as
‘fittingness’ or ‘appropriateness’.
Step 5: Add the reference to the source you used
.... ‘appropriateness’ (de Bettignies, Ip, Bai, Habisch, & Lenssen, 2011).
27. How can you plan for an
assignment?
See these slides again at: tinyurl.com/masseyskillsforsuccess
28. Step 1: Estimate how many paragraphs you have
(based on the recommended word count given in
the question)
________________________________
• An average paragraph in an essay has 4 – 8
sentences, which adds up to 100-200 words.
• So, for 1000 words, you can plan for 6 – 8
paragraphs.
29. Using the same method, you can
convert any word count into paragraphs
________________________________
• 500 words: 3 – 5 paragraphs
• 800 words: 5 – 6 paragraphs
• 1000 words: 6 – 8 paragraphs
• 1500 words: 8 – 10 paragraphs
• 1800 words: 9 – 12 paragraphs
• 2000 words: 10 – 14 paragraphs
• 2500 words: 12 – 16 paragraphs
30. Step 2:Go back to your question analysis. How
many different parts can you identify?
________________________________________
1. Western Approach (Fayol)
2. Non-Western Approach (Confucianism)
3. Compare / Contrast
4. Relevance today?
31. Step 3: Distribute your paragraphs sensibly among
the different parts of the question
________________________________________
2. Western Approach (Fayol)
3. Non-Western Approach (Confucianism)
4. Compare / Contrast
5. Relevance today?

33. Jules Henri Fayol was born in Istanbul in 1841 and died in Paris in
1925. I decided to write about him, because he came up with an
important management approach called Administrative Principles
and one really interesting quote I read about him was that if all
philosophy is a set of footnotes to Plato, management theory is in
large measure a reply to Fayol’s original memo. According to Hales
in a book called Management through Organisation. I chose
Confucianism because it is incredibly important in China and
South-East Asia. They’re different in some ways but similar in lots
of others, both of them are relevant because leadership is the
process of influencing the activities of an organized group towards
goal achievement.

Problem 5:

40. Leadership has been defined as “the process of influencing the activities of
an organized group toward goal achievement” (Rauch & Behling, 1984, p.
46). Given its central importance within society, it is no surprise that
leadership has been a major focus of study and debate throughout history.
This essay compares two approaches to leadership from Western and
Eastern traditions. The first is Fayol’s century-old Administrative Principles
approach, considered to be one of the foundations of the study of
Management as a distinct discipline. Indeed, Management theory has been
described as “in large measure, a reply to Fayol’s original memo” (Hales,
1993, p. 3). The second approach is the much older and more culturally-
embedded set of beliefs known as Confucianism, which is said to continue to
guide leadership and management across China and much of South-East
Asia (Tsui, Wang, Xin, Zhang, & Fu, 2004). It will be argued that, despite
their diverse origins, these two approaches share certain core values, and
an understanding of their potential and limitations continues to be a core
component of management expertise in the modern business environment.
