Summary Of How To Paint A Water Lily By Ted Hughes
Ted hughes uses literary techniques in the most vivid way, to illustrate what his idea of a water lily
painting looked like. In all of his works, the goal is to describe a task or a thing, but make the reader
understand it by using nature as the key. The task in this poem is presented by the title "How To
Paint A Water Lily". The reason he wrote this poem, was to describe nature by decorating the spirit
of the environment around the lily. The two literary techniques that will be discussed in this paper
are imagery and alliteration.
Ted Hughes is using his words to inform the painter in a way that describes everything else but the
lily. The painter is on a mission to create a painted depiction of a water lily in a pond. Ted Hughes is
very fond of nature as he mentions various aspects of nature to create many images in our minds.
However, the main aspect of the poem is surprisingly not the flower; it was the dragonfly. The
dragonfly appears for the second time in stanza 3. "First observe the air's dragonfly That eats meat,
that bullets by" . The dragonfly is mentioned in stanzas 2–7 because of its role it plays on the
environment. The reader and the painter may wonder "What does the dragonfly have to do with the
water lily?" but Hughes shows us how important it is the more you read into the poem.
The first literary technique to be discussed is imagery. Imagery is a common literary technique
found in Ted Hughes' poems. Imagery consists of very descriptive words that help readers visualize
the work better. While Ted is describing the environment around the lily, he describes the action of
the dragonflies as "Rainbow their arcs, spark, or settle." which makes you visualize the dragonflies
arching their backs as if they were about to fly full speed, seeing a spark happen from the light
reflecting off of their shiny wings. The part about "settle" is about how the dragonflies probably fly
away or land on the lily when they are done fighting. The details that were just described were not
stated in the poem, it's just what was visualized after reading these words. There are many other
examples of imagery in the poem. The first stanza says "A green level of lily leaves Roofs the
pond's chamber and paves The flies

Analysis Of Fasting Feasting By Anita Desai
In the passage from Fasting, Feasting by Anita Desai, Arun, a foreign exchange student from India,
much to his disdain, joins the mother and daughter of his host family, Melanie and Mrs. Patton, on a
day to the beach. The complicated and warped experience that Arun faces on the day trip is
characterized by the literary tools used by Anita Desai, such as diction, syntax, and rich
descriptions.
From the opening paragraph of the passage, Arun's uneager disposition is shown, when he is
displayed trying to avoid of the day's plans. However, the extent of Arun's disapproval of the plans
is shown through words like "despondent," to show the dispirited disposition of the boy, and
"wildly" when describing his formulation of excuses. Furthermore, the relationship between Arun
and his host family is presented in this introductory scene, and their eagerness of getting the boy out
of the house is shown through Desai's choice to describe Melanie's method of getting him involved
as staring "challengingly." This emphasizes her determination to get the exchange student out of the
house by using a fairly aggressive term, creating the sense of a showdown for the reader.
Desai continues the description of the standoff with her use of syntax in the next paragraph. The
author avoids using quotation marks during dialogue, as shown when Mrs. Patton says, "No, she
will not. Absolutely not." This creates a more intriguing section to read, but also creating a strong
sense of insistence. With the

How Do the Literary Devices Construct Meaning in “the...
How do the Literary Devices construct meaning in "The Visit"? The book "The Visit" is a play
which is composed by literary devices. All of the messages and ideas that this play contains are
expressed through literary devices, thus giving life to the major themes. Literary devices give
meaning to "The Visit" because they construct the main theme, which is money can corrupt
anything. To begin, there are many literary devices in "The Visit", and they are continuously used
with the purpose of constructing the play's main theme. These are some of the prolonged literary
devices are symbolism, archetype, foreshadowing, characterization, and the setting. Symbolism is a
great example because it has a direct relation with money. In ... Show more content on

This change in people's character again contributes to the main theme, and gives meaning to it.
Furthermore, the setting is a fundamental literary device which forms the main theme and gives
meaning to "The Visit". This is because the setting paves out the environment and situation in which
Guellen is in from the beginning of the book. All throughout Act 1 the reader is given the idea of
how poor Guellen is and everyone is so humble and local. For example, how the train no longer
stops in Guellen, how people only buy cheap local brands at the shop and not imported, how they
accept Ill as dead for Claire's one million, how Ill is the most popular personality. These examples
all show how the town functions, and how they are desperate for money and are willing to commit a
moral crime in order to receive this money. The setting in the "The Visit" gives meaning to the play
because it fundaments how and why Guellen is the way it is and allows the reader to understand the
specific effects Guellen's history plays in the decision making, once Claire offers the one million
pounds. So, literary devices also give meaning to "The Visit" because they lay the base for the play
and how it develops. Finally, literary devices give meaning to "The Visit" because they comprise the
main theme, which is money can corrupt anything. Literary devices give meaning by creating the
bases of the play, and forming the main theme in wide number of ways. Literary devices are the

The Lamp At Noon By Sinclair Ross
What phenomenon has the ability to transform a meager string of text into a lively, immersive
adventure? The answer is literary devices. Literary devices such as foreshadowing and imagery can
be an author's most powerful tool when it comes to formulating an effective conflict or theme in a
story. This is made evident by Sinclair Ross' ability to effectively utilize the literary devices at his
disposal to develop a powerful, efficient short story in "The Lamp at Noon". In the story, imagery,
dialogue, and the omniscient point of view from which the story is perceived are formidable
examples of how literary devices provide a significant role in shaping the plot, conflict and themes
for the reader to experience.
Sinclair Ross' "The Lamp at Noon" effectively showcases the power of imagery. When used
correctly, it can ameliorate the tone, theme and overall experience that the author may be trying to
create for the reader. To begin, Ross' potent use of imagery works to establish a specific setting and
mood to commence the narrative. This is exhibited when the narrator states, "In dim, fitful outline
the stable and oat granary still were visible; beyond, obscuring fields and landmarks, the lower of
dust clouds made the farmyard seem an isolated acre, poised aloft above a sombre void" (Ross 62).
This pictorial description of the setting delivers a specific, forlorn mood and ambience to enhance
the reader's understanding and of the setting to further improve the experience of

Negligence in The Farmer´s Children Essay
As a child your morale can be greatly affected due to occurrences that you may have experienced,
whether it had been pleasurable or displeasing. It is very common for a child to entrust their
guardians with the responsibility of providing for them, but it becomes incredibly difficult for a
child to disregard experiences of immense adversity and affliction, as incidents are subliminally
embedded into a person's subconsciousness. In "The Farmers Children," the stepmother seems to
abstain from doing things that would even remotely allow for us to consider her as being an ample
guardian, as she allows for Emerson and Cato to venture into the barn in the inclemency of the
open–air with scarce provisions. Bishop admirably attempts to convey ... Show more content on

But if they tried to warm their noses against the clumpy lapels of their mackinaws, the freezing
moisture felt even worse, and they gave it up and merely pointed out their breath to each other as it

the brumal conditions, having been conspicuously described. Due to the fact that their provisions are
scarce, we are left to assume that they may not be able to make it through the unrelenting bitterness
of the cold. We were ascertained that Emerson and Cato gradually "grew numb and cold" and that
they felt immense pain. The freezing moisture also had proven to get worse and with no attainable
sources of head we are yet again left to assume that death is to be expected. " The Farmers
Children," is built on the premise that two boys find themselves in the cold with scare provisions.
Clues are presented to us as readers throughout the story as to whether or not the boys will survive
amidst the affliction that they are currently facing. The use of foreshadowing enhances our
attentiveness as to what is to come.
Bishop alludes to other works as a way of furtherly enhancing the reader's understanding of the text.
As a reader we are often left to reevaluate and interrogate our initial confrontations of the original
text. It allows for tension to be built up as our initial expectations are negated. We are often left to

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Hill Short Story Analysis
In Ambrose Bierce's short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Hill, a man named Peyton Farquhar is
about to be hanged for treason against the Union. While waiting to fall off the bridge to hang,
Farquhar thinks back to his wife and child he left back home. He thinks of everything that brings
him joy in life before his final breath. He is then dropped from the bridge, but instead of dying the
rope snaps and he plunges into the water underneath the bridge. Farquhar eventually escapes his
captors and makes it back home to his loving family, once again happy and at ease. Suddenly
Peyton Farquhar is dead, hanging from the bridge. His escape was only a figment of his
imagination. Bierce uses a plethora of literary techniques to produce suspense in his short story.
Some of the different literary techniques used in this short story are imagery, symbolism,
foreshadowing, some flashbacks, and irony. In the middle of the story the reader is tricked into
believing that Farquhar escapes his execution because of the author continuing to explain the
fantasy that is going on in Farquhar's head on the bridge. This type of irony makes this part of the
story suspenseful to the reader because the reader doesn't know the truth nor do they know if
Farquhar will successfully escape his demise or be caught once again.
Throughout the time Farquhar is standing on the bridge awaiting his demise he will often flashback
to fond memories of his family and even to how he got himself into this predicament. Due to his
status as a slave owner politician, he chose not to become a soldier for the war. But he still wanted
to support and do anything that would benefit the Confederate cause. One day a soldier in gray told
him how a Union fort had been set up near a bridge being used as a supply route to the fort. This
gave Farquhar the idea to destroy the bridge in order to interfere with the Union fort. Before he
could successfully follow through with his plan, he was caught by some Union soldiers. This use of
flashbacks in the story creates suspense because it informs the reader of the events that happened
before to bring Farquhar to the present where he's about to meet his end.
Imagery is heavily used when the rope snaps and Farquhar falls into

Thomas Hardy's The Convergence Of The Twain
Thomas Hardy's The Convergence Of The Twain
The poem The Convergence of the Twain, by Thomas Hardy, is about the sinking of the Titanic. The
title alone describes the ship and the iceberg meeting as one. By choosing this title, the author
automatically conveys a seriousness of the poem. The author uses various literary techniques to
convey his mockery and careless attitude towards the sinking of the ship.
In the first five stanzas, the author discusses the already submerged ship. ?Stilly couches she,?
describes the ship resting on the bottom of the ocean. The lines, ?Jewels in joy designed?lie
lightless, all their sparkles bleared and black and blind?, point out the waste of money, technology
and craftsmanship going down with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also all the jewels that were present on the ship, being worn by first–class passengers were now
sitting at the bottom of the ocean floor. The usage of irony represents the loss of the ship, instead of
the loss of life. These lines are indicative of the author?s attitude towards what the ship stood for. He
didn?t want to talk about the tragedy with all the lives lost, instead he concentrates on the ship and
the iceberg meeting.
In stanzas VI, VII, and VIII, it is clear about the destination of the ship and the iceberg colliding. In
stanza VI, while the ship was moving along, very confidently, God was putting forth his plan. In
stanza VII, the iceberg was sitting off in the distance just waiting for the convergence. In stanza
VIII, it describes the final meeting between the two objects. As the ship grew closer and closer to
the iceberg, and also in its confidence, the iceberg was also growing in its confidence and meaning.
The ship thought that it was over God and didn?t need to worry about anything, so God responded
back with the fate of the objects to show that he had more power than the ship, and to sort of show
who?s ?boss?.
The attitude of the author was very indifferent. He chose not to talk about the tragic lives lost in the
poem, but rather the ships loss. Through his use of diction, personification, and irony, he gives the
idea that it was all just destiny, and there was nothing that the ship could do. God

The Importance Of Shakespeare In Schools
"To be, or to not be." A famous quote from the play, "Hamlet", written by William Shakespeare
(poetryfoundation.org). A man who became one of the greatest playwright of the Elizabethan era
and influenced the audience, actors, and individuals who continue to learn about his written work.
The topic of Shakespeare being taught in schools has become controversial. In fact, 25,000
individuals from Alberta, Canada, reviewed the K–12 school curriculum and strongly believe
Shakespeare shouldn't be a required author (pressreader.com). However, the study of Shakespeare
has become valuable to the literature programs in schools which shapes and challenges the students
in influential ways. This can involve the literary techniques and language the readers are exposed to,
the knowledge that comes with the studies, the culture it brings and the ability to connect with the
stories. Shakespeare is still applicable in today's society and the lives of the students, which is why
the teachings of his work is important in classrooms today. Whenever Shakespeare is mentioned,
students have a tendency to let out disastrous cries. What is important for students to realize is that
Shakespeare introduced nearly three thousand words into the English language. He created new,
popular words by changing nouns into verbs, attached words that had never been used before, added
prefixes, and used many other methods that shaped

The Red Badge Of Courage By Stephen Crane
The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane, is a fictional novel that portrays the Civil War
through the life of Henry Fleming, a young soldier. The reader follows Henry's coming of age story
through a strand of events and choices. The fashion in which Crane develops Henry's story, is by
using distinctive literary techniques to establish the theme of courage throughout the novel. Henry,
as the main character, would not have developed over the course of the novel without Crane's use of
courage. One literary technique Crane has used in the novel is irony. In particular when Crane writes
that "at times he (Henry) regarded the wounded soldiers in an envious way. He conceived persons
with torn bodies to be peculiarly happy. He wished that he, too, had a wound, a red badge of
courage" (Crane, 52). This is considered ironic, because all Henry wanted was to be seen as
courageous, and the fact that his first real injury was caused by a union soldier, rather than his
boldness, causes the whole idea behind Henry's courage to seem ironic. In effect, Henry's actions
and thoughts at the beginning of the book, make it sound like he does not wish to be courageous for
the right reasons. Henry craves to be recognized as a hero, but does not want to deal with all of the
effects that could happen leading up to that. At the very beginning of the novel Henry wants to
become someone, he wants to show that he too can fight and be a hero. This is shown in chapter one
when it is written that, "he

Father And Father In Alice Munro's 'Boys And Girls'
Father
For a child, a father means the world to them. And with changing social norms, fathers are much
closer to their children than ever before. The old stereotype of a cold emotionless labourer has been
replaced by the soft caring figure who takes an interest in his kids' lives. Alice Munro, Wendy
Wasserstein, and Theodore Roethke all explore this new relationship through various mediums.
"Boys and Girls" (Munro) is a short story about a young girl strongly influenced by her father trying
to find her place in the world. "Tender Offer" (Wasserstein) is a play detailing the difficulties of
communication between a father and daughter in modern times. Lastly, "My Papa's Waltz"
(Roethke) is a light hearted poem illustrating a joyful night shared by a father and his child. Among
all three works, the children can be seen looking up to their fathers hoping in turn to be recognized
by them. This common theme can be traced among the different works of art thanks to plot, conflict
and imagery.
In Alice Munro's "Boys and Girls", the author employs both plot and conflict to bring forth the
strong yet one–sided relationship. Throughout the short story, the main character, Margaret, avoids
at all costs the indoor chores her mother is tasked with, preferring to work on the farm with her
father, "work done out of doors, and in my father's service, was ritualistically important." (Munro
p.4) The conflict between her and her mother only helped to push her closer to the other parent,

Essay about The Awakening by Kate Chopin
The Awakening by Kate Chopin In "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin, the emotional state of the
central character is often shown to the reader through the employment of literary techniques.
Characterization helps draw parallels and contrasts between secondary characters and Edna
Pontellier. Symbolism is used in order to outline Edna's progression as a character. At the very
beginning of the book, there is constant reference to a caged bird. This can be considered to be a
reference to the "caged" life that Edna leads as a wife and mother in the late 19th century. The bird
is described as speaking a common language and "also a language which nobody understood, unless
it was the mocking–bird that hung on the other side of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is a sad spectacle to see the weaklings bruised, exhausted, fluttering back to earth." Edna must be
strong enough to survive her uprising of sorts against traditional society. She would, however, rather
be a wounded free bird than remain caged. Another reference to birds is the name of Ednas
temporary home, the Pigeon House. Another important symbol is water. When Edna finally
overcomes her inability to swim, she feels free and empowered. She has difficulty realizing that she
cannot swim out as far as she would like to, i.e. she is not entirely self–dependent. It is thus ironic
that she ultimately frees herself completely by drowning. Her suicide is her only option in order to
not sacrifice herself. If she lived, she would have to give up her soul, and just as importantly, her
voice. Characterization is important in "The Awakening" because it shows important contrasts
between Edna and the array of characters that surround her. There are constantly a pair of lovers
surrounding her, always very self involved and obviously in love. They serve to show her what her
life, especially her marriage, is lacking. Mariequita helps show Edna a carefree spirit she is lacking.
Her reactions to these characters outline her altering emotional state throughout the book. For
example, her relief at her father's absence shows her feelings towards being abandoned by

The Dragon Who We Soon Discover
I had qualms at first about how exactly to complete a task such as this, being that my experience
with this type of writing is limited at best. However, I will confess there is much fun to be found in
the fanciful wordplay. Not only are we asked to fill in a piece of the story, requiring knowledge of
the plot line at this point in the story, but the task also prompts a deeper understanding of the literary
devices and influences present in this style of writing. A task of this nature not only familiarizes
students with both the plot line and the technical aspects of the writing, but also fosters an
opportunity to incorporate creativity and merge all of these dynamic fragments into a single
masterpiece.
To begin, I considered the surrounding plot of the story. Just before the section begins we learn of
the dragon who we soon discover is a major player in this epic tale. Thus far in the story the dragon
has played a rather dormant role. Beowulf has been ruling the kingdom for over 50 years and we
have heard not a single mention of the beast that sleeps as he guards his sparkly trove of wealth. At
this point we are also introduced to an escaped slave who wakes the fiery beast by stealing a gem–
studded goblet from the lair. He claims that his thievery was in fact accidental, and so proceeds the
tale of his misadventures in the earthen pit. His story recounts that as he was escaping the chains of
slavery he unknowingly stumbled upon the lair, by chance finding himself amid the

Use Of Literary Devices Throughout Ray Bradbury 's The Veldt
Use of Literary Devices throughout Ray Bradbury's "The Veldt"
Ray Bradbury's personal life encounters and his use of universal literary devices throughout "The
Veldt" accentuate his frequent themes involving fear and harmful innovation. Bradbury's life
experiences, such as living during World War II, also played a major roll in his fearful theme
decisions and sadistic writing style. Bradbury incorporates multiple literary techniques into "The
Veldt" including: metaphors, foreshadowing, irony, imagery, personification, a simplistic writing
style, allusions, and symbolism. In "The Veldt", he commonly uses metaphors, comparing how one
item is like another, to foreshadow or create an eerie tone. Bradbury also leaves out details of
ranging importance to make his writing more personable; this allows the readers to feel involved in
the story. Bradbury directs a majority of his attention on getting his point across using a simplistic
writing style rather than bewildering his readers with complex vocabulary and a perplexing
structure. "The Veldt" alludes to multiple positively correlated topics; this is a contrast to the dark
themes of the story and slightly adds an additional realistic sentiment to the story. This reaction
subconsciously causes readers to become more attentive to the disturbing atmosphere the writing is
centered around. His use of symbolism contributes to the tone of sinister tendencies in the "The
Veldt". Additionally, his use of personification and imagery

Setting The story takes place in a neighborhood that i estimate is quite small considering Carolee
knows her neighbors are gone. The setting revolves around Carolee's home. Her doing her chores in
her home and the suspect roaming around outside. The setting influences the story a lot because it
influences Carolee's reaction to what happened. She had never seen anything like that in person and
it opened her eyes to how society really is. Conflict In the story there are 3 types of conflict, Person
vs. Self, Person vs. Society and Person vs. Person. Person vs. Self would come in when Carolee had
to decide what she was gonna do. Would she call the police or help the person or just leave well
alone. Person vs. Society would be the police force against the suspect. Finally Person vs. Person
would be when the suspect shot the other police officer and when he was getting shot at. St.Croix 3
Symbolism I believe that Carolee symbolises many people in our society at the moment. People
who are oblivious to what is actually happening and how our society functions. Her reaction to what
happened how the police came into her neighborhood and how the man was drenched in blood and
was tumbling around showed lack of experience. Like lack of knowledge of what was actually
going on. Literary Devices In the story the author used foreshadowing. The foreshadowing came in
when Carolee heard the dogs barking. This foreshadowed that something was found or the dogs

Theme Of The Interlopers
Why do we engage in war? Is there ever a significant outcome?Just like the Korean War, the story
Interlopers by Saki, share similar themes and outcomes. In the Interlopers, the author Saki conveys a
theme of don't waste your life on engaging in hatred cause death will follow, using the literary
techniques of situational irony, imagery, and foreshadowing.
Saki has displayed a theme of wasting your life on engaging in hatred because death will follow, by
using the technique of irony. This theme comes into notice when the forresters walk out into the
open to explore. Ulrich and Georg, the forresters, meet eyes in the middle of the open forest. Then,
lighting struck and branches from the trees fall down onto Georg and Ulrich. The hatred turned from
each other onto nature. Hoping that the other is dead, Ulrich shouts "I'm caught in my own forest
land", and then their was a moment of silence (Saki 8). Georg was silent because he knew that this
situation he got in, is very ironic. They're on their own land but yet trapped and nearing death all
because of this long lasting family feud. Since death is nearing, Georg starts to get into panic mode.
He shouts at Ulrich and says, "Death and damnation to you, Ulrich Von Gradwitz", as they were
trapped under the heavy tree branches (Saki 8). Georg didn't mean that in a bad way. He just wanted
to make sure that Ulrich knew that if they did died under those branches, that it would be all his

Analysis of a Poem “We wear the mask” Essay
Amber Davis Professor Quirk Literature 101 February 28, 2013 We Wear the Mask The lyric poem
"We wear the mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a poem about the African American race, and how
they had to conceal their unhappiness and anger from whites. This poem was written in 1895, which
is around the era when slavery was abolished. Dunbar, living in this time period, was able to
experience the gruesome effects of racism, hatred and prejudice against blacks at its worst. Using
literary techniques such as: alliteration, metaphor, persona, cacophony, apostrophe and paradox,
Paul Dunbar's poem suggests blacks of his time wore masks of smiling faces to hide their true
feelings. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, the person of this poem is asking why should the world get the right to know why they
are truly upset, and potentially use it against them; instead, have pride, hold your head up high, and
put on your "mask." In doing so, the literary term paradox comes into play. This poem is about the
true feelings of blacks being hidden behind masks, when also the poem itself hides the fundamental
issue of racism from even being mentioned – that alone is a paradox because the poem has a mask
on as well. This poem can also be seen as a paradox because this so called "we" is supposed to be
wearing a mask when in fact they are expressing their feelings and becoming vulnerable, aka – no
more mask. Although each stanza has a bit of alliteration, the second stanza is the most dominant.
Dunbar writes, "Why should the world be over–wise,/ In counting all our tears and sighs?/ Nay, let
them only see us, while/ We wear our masks" (6–9). The alliteration in this stanza is used heavily
with the letter "w." With the use of this alliteration, it creates a sense of flow that helps the speaker
get his point across more smoothly. Although the poem is more cacophonic, and harsh, rather than
euphonic, and harmonious, the use of alliteration helps highlight the importance of this stanza's
sayings. The alliteration aspect of this stanza

A Good Man Is Hard To Find Literary Analysis
The short story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find", written by Flannery O'Connor, depicts the cold–
hearted murder of a family by a group of escaped convicts led by an infamous killer, The Misfit.
O'Connor leaves the readers waiting for good to overcome evil, but never lets them have their
envisioned ending which gives this story its intriguing draw. Flannery O'Connor uses literary
techniques such as conflicts, foreshadowing, imagery, simile, and irony to create unusual characters
and a twisted plot. In "A Good Man is Hard to Find" there are a few characters who are in constant
conflict. The grandmother, as all other grandmothers, can run a person's ear into the ground with her
eccentric views and aimless ramblings. She is never direct and spins her conversations into long
detailed stories. Her inability to stop talking is what ends up getting her killed (959). Every so often
there is peace and quiet, but not that often. Bailey her son often shows discontent for his mother.
She apparently gets on his nerves, but there is probably still love for her although the story never
quite expresses it. The children wonder why the grandmother came along, but they know she would
not have stayed at the house even if she could have been "'queen for a day'" (948). The
grandmother's clothing makes her stand out as a prominent old lady so much that if she were to be
found dead on the side of the road, people would at once recognize that she is a lady (948). The
reader can tell the grandmother is

How Is the Continual Battle of Nature vs Human Technology...
Explain how Bradbury uses this story to question human's reliance on technology
The house was created for the sole purpose of serving mankind.
The house cannot save the family, or humans, from the viciousness of a nuclear bomb.
By the time the reader is exposed to the house, the owners have been eradicated, "their images
burned on wood in one titanic instant". The house continues to make breakfast, have little robotic
mice that clean the house, and even read poetry for, essentially, no one.
When the story begins, it appears that machinery has triumphed over humans.
Humankind might have fallen beneath the powerful nuclear bomb, but technology has not.
Furthermore, while the family relied on the house to take care of ... Show more content on

Instead of a family having to cook and clean, the house does it for them. There is no love within the
house. While it would require more work, perhaps it would be more meaningful for a family to work
together to keep their house running properly. Instead of being a mere house, it would become a
home.
Techniques Bradbury uses throughout the story?
1) Personification
2) Foreshadowing
3) Suspense
1) The most often used literary technique to describe the house is personification, where you give
inanimate objects human–like characteristics. The stove is given human actions, "In the kitchen the
breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior...". This passage shows that
Bradbury has given a breakfast stove the ability to hiss a sigh. Stoves are not physically able to sigh.
Rain is personified, "And the rain tapped on the empty house, echoing". The rain did not literally tap
on the house, it means that the rain was making noise as it fell and came into contact with the house.
2) Bradbury uses is foreshadowing, hinting clues that suggest events that will later happen. The
voice–clock sang, worriedly, "...Ticktock, seven o' clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o'
clock! As if it were afraid that nobody would". This shows that the house was sensing something
was going to be different today. It foreshadows that something bad may happen. There is a fire in
the house, "Smoke and silence. A great

protagonist's in each story consider all their options and think ahead before making a life changing
decision. In the stories "The Bicycle" and "Lather and Nothing Else" both Horton and Tellez use
symbolism to portray an overall theme of making difficult choices. In "The Bicycle" Hannah has her
life completely controlled by her Tante Rose. She has no freedom because she is forbidden to break
the Sabbath in anyway, and due to Tante Rose's previous traumatic experience with a bicycle, she is
absolutely forbidden to ride one. In the end, Hannah chooses to go against her aunts wishes and
rides a bicycle. She expresses that she wanted to "prove she had some control over her own life"
(Horton 35). The bicycle acts as a symbol of freedom; from Hannah breaking the promise she made
to her Tante Rose, to having control of her own life and becoming who she wanted to be from the
start. Likewise, in "Lather and Nothing Else" the barber untimely had a choice of being a murderer
or hero. The razor blade is one of the most important symbols because it represents his choice of
killing the captain or not. This was how the barber would determine his future. He says, "I was
stropping my best blade". (Tellez 346). "My fate hangs on the edge of this razor blade". (Tellez
346). This was a big moral dilemma for the barber, and at this point he was really choosing what

Flashbacks In This Is Where It Ends By Marieke Nijkamp
Everyone experiences flashbacks that help make different decisions everyday because people aware
of the different reactions that have occurred. Flashbacks are critical in life and within books because
they help people come to a clear understanding on what is happening and how the story will be
wrapped up altogether. Throughout the novel, This is Where it Ends, by Marieke Nijkamp,
flashbacks have occurred in the perspective of different characters. These contrasting flashbacks
have created a clear understanding as to why certain things arose. The many flashbacks throughout
the book, such as Autumn's flashback reflecting on Tyler's personal change, Claire's flashback
referencing foreshadowing, and Sylvia's perspective displaying conflict and Tyler's true personality,
demonstrate a clear understanding as to how and why certain events took place.
Amid the many flashbacks in the Book, Autumn's flashback with Tyler was highlighted because it
demonstrates the concept of change and is shown through character types. During the flashback,
Autumn depicted how she felt safe when Tyler invited her to see dancers and spend the anniversary
of their mother's death together. Referencing This is Where it Ends, the author illustrates, "Tyler's
three words loosened the noose of fear around my heart... I felt safe. It was perfect" (108). She
exclaimed how she felt safe and how in the end, the night was all perfect. However, shown through
the literary technique character change, this flashback

William Blake Poetry Analysis
In general, there are various forms of literature, whom many historical authors and analysts
throughout the decades have the chance to demonstrate their freedom of expression, and as well as
using their imagination to conduct dramatic plots with compelling characters. In particular, there is
one specific literary form that expresses the author's mood, tone and profound messages, in a way
that is rhythmic, allegorical and visually creative pertaining to the human senses. In this case, the
form of poetry matches with the mentioned criteria, from its promising structural styles, such as
limericks and haikus, as well as its repetitive alliteration that attracts readers to recite the poems, in
an emotional manner. It is a fact that poetry is also used to enhance the author's theme, according to
many descriptive literary techniques, such as similes, personification and symbolism. In particular,
the theme of love can be portrayed in various meanings and visual representations, according to
each author's contrasting perspective. Specifically, there are three poems that briefly describe three
perceptions of love, whether it can be prominent in regards to the loss of virginity, the appreciation
of idealistic beauty, or the wrathful feelings towards infinite sexual desire.
Firstly, the poem called The Sick Rose discusses the subject of love, referring to the allegorical
figures that William Blake explains in this composition. With the use of personification and

Divergent And Allegiant Essay
How are the effects of Divergent and Allegiant's speculation on individuals / groups discussed by
the author?
What if people divided society into groups based on what their personal virtues were, which they
are made to work on throughout their whole lives? What if you had to stay with this group your
whole life, leaving your friends and family behind forever?
This is the case for the dystopian books Divergent and Allegiant, written by Veronica Roth.
There is a lot of speculation in these books, about the portrayal of these groups, known as 'factions'.
The main speculation is on the group of individuals known as the Divergents. In the first book of the
series, Divergent, they are portrayed to be individuals who rebel against the faction system as their

Tris realises this when she first found out she was Divergent and stopped listening to the opinions of
other people and accepted her own perspective, "When I found out I was Divergent, I thought of it
as a secret power that no one else possessed, something that made me different, better, stronger,"
(Roth, 2013, p. ).
As well as using perspective to speculate on the Divergents, Roth additionally uses foreshadowing
throughout Divergent, to link to the ideas explored in Allegiant.
Roth uses foreshadowing to provide the reader with an advance hint of what is to come later in the
story. She uses it mainly throughout the first book in the series to give the reader a lead in to what to
expect in the final book.
The most prominent example of foreshadowing in Divergent is when Tris questions the aptitude
test; "The tests don't have to change our choices," to which her brother Caleb replies with, "Don't
they, though?" (Roth, 2011, p. 66). This foreshadows Caleb's decision to leave his own faction and
join a different one, which is a decision which is highly judged

How To Paint A Water Lily Essay
Ted Hughes uses literary techniques in the most vivid way, to illustrate what his idea of a water lily
painting looked like. In all of his work, the goal is to describe a task or a thing, but make the reader
understand it by using nature as the key. The task in this poem is presented by the title "How To
Paint A Water Lily". The reason he wrote this poem, was to describe nature by decorating the spirit
of the environment around the lily. The two literary techniques that will be discussed in this paper
are imagery and alliteration. Ted Hughes is using his words to inform the painter in a way that
describes everything else but the lily. The painter is on a mission to create a painted depiction of a
water lily in a pond. Ted Hughes is very fond of nature as he mentions various aspects of nature to
create many images in our minds. However, the main aspect of the poem is surprisingly not the
flower; it was the dragonfly. The dragonfly appears for the second time in stanza 3. "First observe
the air's dragonfly
That eats meat, that bullets by" The dragonfly is mentioned in stanzas 2–7 because of its role it
plays in the environment. The reader and the painter may wonder "What does the dragonfly have to
do with the water lily?" but Hughes shows us how important it is the more you read into the poem.
The first literary technique to be discussed is imagery. Imagery is a common literary technique
found in Ted Hughes' poems. Imagery consists of very descriptive words that help

Steinbeck and His Techniques for Success in "Of Mice and Men"
There is only one way an author can get their readers to cry, laugh, and love or just enjoy their

author`s ability to use literary devices through the book helps in direct characterization and lets
readers get a better understanding of Lennie and George, the two main characters Of Mice and Men.

Lennie`s character gets better and better as the story progresses, especially through the use of
similes. While George and Slim are sharing their stories, George starts to discuss about the struggles
he been through with Lennie. George explains to Slim about how Lennie was and says to him, "He`s
dumb as hell, but he ain`t crazy" (Steinbeck 39).This shows the truthfulness in George`s words and
dumb as hell means truly dumb and is usually used in Northern California to describe someone who
is extremely dumb. This quote uses a simile and lets readers visualize and understand how dumb
and stupid Lennie really is. The simile also helps to exaggerate how dumb Lennie is by comparing it
to hell. It lets readers to get a better understanding of Lennie`s disabilities and understand him more.
Overall, with the help of similes Lennie`s character comes to life and through the book .Similes give
the book an overall effect of more imagery, exaggeration and helps build characters in the story.
Lennie`s characteristic described from similes also help to foreshadow a character`s next decision or
ending.
Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to warn readers of future events that occur later in the story. Crook is
a black stable–hand, kind but at the same time hates everyone on the farm. While all the men on the
farm are out, Lennie spots a yellow light coming from Crook`s room and soon starts to make a

Analysis Of Amy Tan 's The Joy Luck Club
Relationships define a connection between two beings, whether it be through blood, friendship, or
romance. In most cases, the first group that people experience is with their families. The kinship
people are born into comes with ups and downs, which may cause a rift between both parties. Thus,
maintaining a seamless connection may become a struggle between two dissimilar individuals,
"Like many relationships, we have our struggles, our misunderstandings, and our
miscommunications. We are very different people, but also very similar at the same time" (Goreski).
Amy Tan, an author of numerous novels, understands the battle of relationships, especially between
culturally diverse mothers and daughters. In one of Tan's novels, The Joy Luck Club, she writes to
get the point across of how difficult it is for contrasting cultures to communicate with one another,
"...out of an intense concern with the individual artistic choices she was making at every level and at
every moment" (Evans 3). The passionate message Tan stresses in the novel demonstrate how
crucial communication is to her, specifically between a mother and daughter. In The Joy Luck Club,
four women from China move to San Francisco to escape from their pasts. Their American–born
daughters, however, seem to not comprehend why their mothers act and think the way they do. As
the story unravels, the daughters and mothers come to understand each other. Jing–mei, one of the

Literary Techniques
The meaning of a poem (i.e its focus, mood and the speaker's attitude) is enhanced by four main
types of literary techniques: Diction
Imagery
Sound devices
Rhythm, Rhyme and Repetition
Diction
Diction is the choice of words a poet uses to bring meaning across.
In working through a poem, it is useful to question why a certain word is used, and what kind of
effect is achieved with the choice and placement of the word.
Analyze a word by its literal meaning first, then state whether there is an implied meaning based
on its context:

Story of an Hour
Story of an Hour Kate Chopin 's the "Story of an Hour" includes a vast amount of literary devices.
Irony, foreshadowing, personification, imagery, symbolism, metaphor and repetition are some of the
major literary techniques used by Chopin within this short story about a woman named Mrs.
Mallard. Although the story covers only one hour in the life of the main character, the use of these
various literary techniques present the theme of the story to the reader in a very entertaining manner.
The "Story of an Hour" is primarily a story of great irony. Irony is first demonstrated when Mrs.
Mallard who has a serious heart condition finds out the news about the sudden death of her husband.
Although she appears upset and goes to her room ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This again shows how depressing her life really was with her husband.
Visual imagery is used in the story by Chopin to help the reader create an image of the words and
scenes she is presenting in the story. As an example of this imagery she writes: "there were patches
of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other in
the west facing her window". With imagery, she also helps us feel the miserable world Mrs. Mallard
lived in. "She carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of victory". Chopin also includes
symbolism as a literary device when Mrs. Mallard stares out the window of her room. The view
through the window is symbolic of a new world with no restrictions and limitations now that her
husband is dead. She also used symbolism when she said, "patches of blue sky showing here and
there through the clouds." Her ultimate death due to a heart attack is also symbolic of the loss of her
love for her husband.
The basic symbol of the story involves the new life she would be able to live alone. Divorce was
rare in Mrs. Mallard 's days, but the news of her husband 's death offers her a chance at a new
beginning. "She carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of victory." This symbolizes the strength
that Mrs. Mallard had during this time period, and shows that she will conquer obstacles in her
future.
Chopin uses repetition to emphasize a particular idea. For instance, when she said, "free,

Throughout 'Fly Away Peter' Malouf utilises a variety of literary techniques such as contrast,
Imagery, Symbolism and foreshadowing to portray ideas and themes. The title 'Fly Away Peter'
makes reference to the traditional English nursery rhyme 'Two Little Dickie Birds'. Moulaf utilises
this nursery rhyme to make the connection between themes within 'Fly Away Peter' and everyday
life.

The invisible paddock talked about in the first sentence is foreshadowing of the introduction of the
two planes of life. Moulaf is also using symbolism. The "invisible paddock" symbolises the sky, and
as later introduced the view from the sky is the second plane of life.
Moulaf has used the lines; "One named Peter, One named Paul" to link the characters of the book to
the religious views and ways of living in the 1960's. In the 1750's the rhyme 'Two Little Dickie
Birds' talked of two birds names Jack and Gill, in the early 1900's the names were changed to the
disciples 'Peter and Paul'. In 'Fly away Peter' Moulaf has used this link between the birds name to
introduce the religious connections. The bird peter symbioses Jim and Paul symbolises Ashley in the
context of 'Fly away Peter'.
Throughout the novel Moulaf uses the literary technique of narration to tell parts of the story. "The
world Jim found himself in..." this narrator figure symbolises God. Jim and Ashley also symbolise
angels. This references the first quote Moulaf placed in the front of the novel. The "divine creature"
is an angel. Jim and Ashley are angels incarnated in a human form, and the 'flying away' is the time
on earth and the coming back is the return to heaven. In the novel Jim dies from injuries sustained
form a battle, and in this the cycle of his life is complete and he returns to heaven.
The lines "Fly away peter, Fly away

The Influence of Realism and Naturalism on 20th Century American Fiction After World War I,
American people and the authors among them were left disillusioned by the effects that war had on
their society. America needed a literature that would explain what had happened and what was
happening to their society. American writers turned to what is now known as modernism. The
influence of 19th Century realism and naturalism and their truthful representation of American life
and people was evident in post World War I modernism. This paper will try to prove this by
presenting the basic ideas and of these literary genres, literary examples of each, and then make

Literary naturalism invited writers to examine human beings objectively, as a "scientist studies
nature" ("Am. Lit." Compton's). In portraying ugliness and cruelty, the authors refrained from
preaching about them; rather they left readers to draw their own conclusions about the life they
presented. Generally, these authors took a pessimistic view to portray a life that centered on the
negative part of man's existence. When dealing with society directly, naturalists generally detailed
the destruction of people without any sentiment. To do this, they wrote more open about society's
problems in a more open manner usually using nature as a symbol for society. Naturalistic literature,
like! realistic, served as a catalyst for change but, in contrast, was a little more like propaganda.
Even though only twenty years may have separated them, the transformation from
realism/naturalism to modernism was a long one in terms of how much society had changed. The
aforementioned rapid change in American society and America's relation with the rest of the world
left America in disarray. After the first World War, American society was divided and left without
definition. This called for a new age of literary expression to control and document the "isolationist
fears", "corruption", and "disenchantment" (Bradley 1339–1340) caused by the war. Authors looked

Comparing Poe And Hitchcock's Use Of Suspense
Poe and Hitchcock have published numerous stories and movies that follow the same guidelines.
Poe's poems and writings are very dark and mysterious, he draws you in with depression or
suspension that builds terror. Hitchcock is the same way, he develops terror through his movies by
building suspense to create a horror movie. Hitchcock and Poe developed their pieces with suspense
to build terror in similar and deferent ways by using literary devices and mise–en–scene. Within
Poe's writings he uses a vast amount of imagery to symbolize main concepts, as well as, to explain
what is happening in depth to the reader or audience. Hitchcock demonstrates the same technique
except he uses the lighting when making his films. In Poe's story "The Masque ... Show more

This device develops suspense because the reader is unaware of the outcome or the possible twist.
Most people do not realize the foreshadowing done until the climax is relied. In The House of
Usher, Poe foreshadows the sister's , of the main characters, death is false through numerous word
plays. She was never dead, but un responsive, until finally she is alive and after them. "I did actually
hear (laugh from what direction it proceeded I found it impossible to say) a low and apparently
distant, but harsh, protracted, and most unusual scream and granting sound" (Poe 22). This line from
Poe, foreshadows that the sister will wake, and that she will be overturned by the events that
unraveled. By Poe foreshadowing her wake and revenge, he leaves the reader analyzing the future,
building the suspense for what may or may not happen, and this suspense build terror within the
story and the reader. Hitchcock does the same technique in his film The Birds but instead he uses
music within the film. In the movie, birds attack the town and kill or injure the townspeople. During
one scene at the school, the children keep singing a song that has really long chorus that gets
creepier and creepier as the keep singing. While they sing, the film makers use jump–cuts to show

Essay about Literary Techniques in "The Things They Carried"
A literary technique is a device employed in literature to add depth to a writer's work. These
techniques can be obvious, such as the technique of rhyme in a poem, or subtle, such as
juxtaposition, which can go unnoticed by the reader. In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien uses
many such techniques to provide more depth to his book. Four literary techniques used by Tim
O'Brien are symbolism, pathetic fallacy, irony, and juxtaposition. One literary technique prominent
in The Things They Carried, particularly in the story by the same name, is symbolism. Throughout
this story, O'Brien mentions all the things that the soldiers carry with them, both physical and
emotional. However, the physical items that the men carried is more than just ... Show more content

This is reflected in the weather at the time of Kiowa's death. The soldiers were camping out in a
field along the Song Tra Bong, and "the rain kept getting worse. And by midnight the field turned
into soup" (145). The rain emulates the emotions of the weary and despondent soldiers. Pathetic
fallacy is a very useful technique because it helps to provide the tone for the story. If the story was a
sad one but the weather was bright and sunny, the tone of the story would be wrong, and vice versa.
In Speaking of Courage, the fact that it was raining during the main event of the story helps the
reader gain and understanding of just how bleak and dismal the events that occurred were. Irony, or
a discrepancy between expectation and reality, is another literary technique used by Tim O'Brien in
The Things They Carried. Many of the titles of the stories contain irony themselves. For example,
Speaking of Courage is more centred on the themes of failure and the inability to be courageous
than it is about courage. The story Love is not, as it would seem, about mutual love, but rather
unrequited love. Field Trip, an expression with a usually very positive connotation, is a story about a
visit to a battleground where many lives had been lost. The Story How to Tell a True War Story also
contains much irony within it. The main point of this story is that a true war story cannot be told
because the simple act of telling it makes it untrue. The title of this

Use of Character Flaws and Literary Devices to Teach Morals in Oedipus Rex
The Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex is an excellent example of how an author can use literary
techniques and personality traits to teach a certain moral or theme. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles
communicates his themes and morals to the reader through the character flaws of Oedipus, a tragic
hero.
The most prominent character flaw that Oedipus possesses is his excessive arrogance. One way this
flaw is displayed is Oedipus' repeated use of the pronoun "I". In lines sixty seven through eighty
alone, Oedipus uses the word "I" eight times, projecting his haughty personality. "I have found one
helpful course, and that I have taken: I have sent Creon...to Delphi..." ... Show more content on

In this quote Oedipus mocks Teiresias because he is unwilling to except Teiresias' view of the
future. Oedipus is so egotistical and proud that he dares to suggest that he is superior to a high priest
of Apollo.
Another major character flaw that Oedipus holds is his inability to view a problem on more than one
plane of thought. Every time Oedipus is confronted with a situation he makes a rash decision and
assumes, because of his hubris, that he has made the best choice. These decisions, however,
contribute to the ultimate fall of Oedipus. "I found one helpful course, and that I have taken" states
Oedipus, displaying his characteristic of looking at a problem and considering only one solution
(70–71).
Oedipus seems solve problems with rash and close minded solutions. This can be seen when
Oedipus, no matter what the consequences, insists on knowing his true origin even after Jocasta
pleads him to stop questioning the messenger: "For god's love, let us have no more questioning! Is
your life nothing to you?" (1005–1006). "However base my birth, I must know about it." replies
Oedipus (1024). Since Oedipus did not stop to consider what might be revealed in his past, he
obtained all knowledge and fell from his high pedestal. When Oedipus was living in Corinth with
his supposed parents a soothsayer told him that his destiny was to murder his father and marry his
mother. Stricken with fear, Oedipus considered only one solution to

facial expression and her reaction to having to admit that the sweater belonged to her. Cisneros also

This contrasts significantly to Cleon, who ruled at the end of the Peloponnesian Wars, which Athens
lost to Sparta. This difference is important because it shows two ends of the spectrum and how the
Athens involvement in wars over the 5th century impacted greatly on Athenian society.
Aristophanes uses symbolism to portray the coming of the new age, with the younger society of
Athens and that the downfall of society is because of the older society. For example, Bdelycleon
explains to his father that Cleon is actually treating the jurymen as slaves and that even within the
'elite' group it is corrupt, "But what do you get out of it, apart from this absolute pittance? And even
that they squeeze out like little drops of oil, just enough at a time to keep you going. They want you
to be poor, and I'll tell you why: they're training you to know the hand that feeds you." This shows
the symbolism of the new leading the old into a new way of thinking, by not just thinking for
themselves, but the idea that they should look at the big picture first, instead of prevailing to Cleon
straight away. In contrast to the young's analytical and logical way of thinking, the old have a
slightly different view of the law system, Philocleon says, "As I pass, one slips his delicate hand into
mine – the very hand that has dipped so deeply into the public funds. And they all bow down low,
and plead with me in pitiful tones." Aristophanes is exampling the jurors and how they

The Poem Australia By Dorothea Mackellar And AD Hope
Comparative Essay – Riya
Mackellar and AD Hope use literary devices like imagery, personification and tone to convey their
perspective of Australia. The Poem Australia by AD Hope describes his negative opinion of
Australia as he looks down on the Australian landscape. Contrastingly, the poem My Country was
written by Dorothea Mackellar at age 19 in 1904. She wrote while she was homesick in England and
she expresses her deep passion and love for Australia as she compares the natural beauty of
Australia to the landscape of Britain. She shows adoration to Australia for both its positives and
negatives.
Mackellar and AD Hope use the poetic technique of imagery to not only express their opinion of
Australia but also to highlight their differing views of the Australian landscape They effectively use
words and phrases that activate the readers' senses and emotions. In My Country, the senses of
hearing and sight are triggered by the descriptive phrases used. The sight is activated with the use of
phrases such as 'sunburnt country'(Mackellar, 1908). and 'green and shaded lanes' (Mackellar, 1908).
The sense of hearing is activated with phrases such as 'the drumming of an army, the steady, soaking
rain' (Mackellar, 1908). and 'the hot gold hush of noon' (Mackellar, 1908). These phrases illustrate
to the reader the sounds that can be heard in outback Australia. Mackellar uses imagery to help the
audience visualise the landscape and the events that occur in outback Australia.

The central theme of conflict is dissected by various poets using numerous literary techniques.
Particularly, physical, gender, social, and existential conflict is explored using literary technique by
the poets.
In Kenneth Slessor's Beach Burial and Wilfred Owen's Exposure both poets create pathos for the
soldiers not in gunfire to highlight the most harmful pat of war is in fact not direct violence. Slessor
personifies "words [to be] chok[ing]" and the seasons to have "breath" in order to dehumanise the

no matter the time period. Thus, changing the order of events does not change the anxiety of the

This negative imagery reflects the attitudes of the three wise men, expressing their anxieties about
the new king. Additionally, Watsky uses irony and juxtaposition to highlight the constant anxiety
humans possess. Watsky ironically states his "mother is an 8–year–old girl" and his "grandson is a

audience that people will never change and that anxiety will always be a part of the world.
Similarly, Eliot also uses juxtaposition to highlight that anxiety is fundamental to society. By
juxtaposing luxurious things such as "silken girls bringing sherbet" with the negative imagery of
"camel men cursing and grumbling", Eliot displays that even in luxury, humans are prone to anxiety.
Therefore, to examine the idea that anxiety is a fundamental human condition, Watsky and Eliot
both use various literary techniques. However, Langston Hughes' The Negro Speaks of Rivers
instead explores the idea that there is always hope, especially when society is oppressive as the two
are dichotomous. This is expressed when Hughes juxtaposes the colour of "muddy" brown, which is
typically used to describe negative things, to "gold" a colour that is usually positive. This oxymoron

John Gardeners Grendel Kennings, Existentialism And Metaphor
In John Gardeners Grendel Kennings, existentialism and metaphor are used to highlight Grendle's
isolation and clearly establish a central idea that isolating one's self leads to self destruction.
Throughout the novel these literary techniques help Gardener to establish the idea of an already
corrupt mind, collapsing around the edges. As the novel progresses the energy created intensifies
and allures the audience. Signs of isolationism in Grendel are evident from the very beginning with
Kennings to demonstrate Grendle's emotions throughout the novel. The first evident sign of
isolation established through Kennings is found on in chapter 1; it reads "such are tiresome
memories of a shadow–shooter, earth–rim–roamer, walker of the world's weird wall." (Gardener, 7).
Through this statement Gardener describes how Grendel is feeling, not only does give us insight
into Grendle's thoughts, but it also helps to establish the central mood of the novel. The author uses
the word Shadow –shooter to give us insight into the idea that Grendel feels like he has been in
constant hiding because of his outcastedness, while on the other hand earth–rim–roamer zones in on
the concept that he feels he is not tied him down and no can force him into becoming so. This only
expands our knowledge on how we see Grendel as a character and intensifies the mood and tone to
match Grendle's strangled emotions. A little farther in around the beginning of chapter seven, there
is another reference that uses

Literary Elements In Literature
Throughout history, authors incorporate literary elements to enhance their writing. Literary elements
are used to construct an author's writing to portray one's unique style and to convey the message that
they want to bring to their readers. Literary elements add to a piece of writing in many ways. For
example, an author may voice his or her perspective as expressed through the narrator in a story.
The setting of a story helps the reader visualize the place and time in which the story occurs. At
times, an author may use the literary technique of personification which gives nonhuman objects
human abilities and characterizations. Authors such as Flannery O'Connor, James Joyce, and
Katherine Mansfield use several literary techniques to develop their stories and portray their
message. These three authors use irony which contradicts what was inferred by a specific character
in the beginning of the story. At the start of the story the reader and the other characters in the story
expect one thing to occur but as one reaches the end of the story the situation is flipped to be exactly
the opposite of what was expected.
In the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find", Flannery O'Connor uses the literary device of irony to
help get across what he is trying to convey. In the story the grandmother plans a whole vacation for
the family and ends up sending everyone to be doomed for the worse. The vacation went all wrong.
The grandmother's intention was to plan a family vacation where everyone

Weather And Darkness And Foreshadowing In The Kiss, By...
In the short story, The Kiss by Peter Goldsworthy and the film adaptation by Ashlee Page, the
authors effectively use techniques to show a sense of impending doom for the characters. This is
conveyed through the use of weather and setting and psychological doom that is created in both the
film and story, the authors use a variety of literary and film techniques to portray this.
The authors both use weather, darkness and the water tank to predict the ominous events to come,
and they do this through literary and film techniques such foreshadowing, Imagery, camera angles
and lighting. Throughout the story, Goldsworthy effectively uses weather and darkness to
foreshadow the impending doom of the characters, when he says "the lighting flicker, on cue, might
have been a warning sent from Kenny's parents" (p.1) and "utter darkness" (p.1). It can be seen that
Goldsworthy uses darkness as a metaphor for death and uses weather to foreshadow the ill–fated
events to come. In comparison to the story, where the director uses dark and eerie lighting
throughout the entirety of the short film to build mood but also as a symbol of danger and death.
This is specifically seen when the bike light turns off and the film becomes even darker. The bike
light turning off symbolises a loss of hope and the darkness is a metaphor for danger that is to come.
Foreshadowing is further used by Goldsworthy when he describes the water tank as a "The big
water tank looms out of the darkness......concrete

Summary Of How To Paint A Water Lily By Ted Hughes

  • 1. Summary Of How To Paint A Water Lily By Ted Hughes Ted hughes uses literary techniques in the most vivid way, to illustrate what his idea of a water lily painting looked like. In all of his works, the goal is to describe a task or a thing, but make the reader understand it by using nature as the key. The task in this poem is presented by the title "How To Paint A Water Lily". The reason he wrote this poem, was to describe nature by decorating the spirit of the environment around the lily. The two literary techniques that will be discussed in this paper are imagery and alliteration. Ted Hughes is using his words to inform the painter in a way that describes everything else but the lily. The painter is on a mission to create a painted depiction of a water lily in a pond. Ted Hughes is very fond of nature as he mentions various aspects of nature to create many images in our minds. However, the main aspect of the poem is surprisingly not the flower; it was the dragonfly. The dragonfly appears for the second time in stanza 3. "First observe the air's dragonfly That eats meat, that bullets by" . The dragonfly is mentioned in stanzas 2–7 because of its role it plays on the environment. The reader and the painter may wonder "What does the dragonfly have to do with the water lily?" but Hughes shows us how important it is the more you read into the poem. The first literary technique to be discussed is imagery. Imagery is a common literary technique found in Ted Hughes' poems. Imagery consists of very descriptive words that help readers visualize the work better. While Ted is describing the environment around the lily, he describes the action of the dragonflies as "Rainbow their arcs, spark, or settle." which makes you visualize the dragonflies arching their backs as if they were about to fly full speed, seeing a spark happen from the light reflecting off of their shiny wings. The part about "settle" is about how the dragonflies probably fly away or land on the lily when they are done fighting. The details that were just described were not stated in the poem, it's just what was visualized after reading these words. There are many other examples of imagery in the poem. The first stanza says "A green level of lily leaves Roofs the pond's chamber and paves The flies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Analysis Of Fasting Feasting By Anita Desai In the passage from Fasting, Feasting by Anita Desai, Arun, a foreign exchange student from India, much to his disdain, joins the mother and daughter of his host family, Melanie and Mrs. Patton, on a day to the beach. The complicated and warped experience that Arun faces on the day trip is characterized by the literary tools used by Anita Desai, such as diction, syntax, and rich descriptions. From the opening paragraph of the passage, Arun's uneager disposition is shown, when he is displayed trying to avoid of the day's plans. However, the extent of Arun's disapproval of the plans is shown through words like "despondent," to show the dispirited disposition of the boy, and "wildly" when describing his formulation of excuses. Furthermore, the relationship between Arun and his host family is presented in this introductory scene, and their eagerness of getting the boy out of the house is shown through Desai's choice to describe Melanie's method of getting him involved as staring "challengingly." This emphasizes her determination to get the exchange student out of the house by using a fairly aggressive term, creating the sense of a showdown for the reader. Desai continues the description of the standoff with her use of syntax in the next paragraph. The author avoids using quotation marks during dialogue, as shown when Mrs. Patton says, "No, she will not. Absolutely not." This creates a more intriguing section to read, but also creating a strong sense of insistence. With the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Do the Literary Devices Construct Meaning in ‚Äúthe... How do the Literary Devices construct meaning in "The Visit"? The book "The Visit" is a play which is composed by literary devices. All of the messages and ideas that this play contains are expressed through literary devices, thus giving life to the major themes. Literary devices give meaning to "The Visit" because they construct the main theme, which is money can corrupt anything. To begin, there are many literary devices in "The Visit", and they are continuously used with the purpose of constructing the play's main theme. These are some of the prolonged literary devices are symbolism, archetype, foreshadowing, characterization, and the setting. Symbolism is a great example because it has a direct relation with money. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This change in people's character again contributes to the main theme, and gives meaning to it. Furthermore, the setting is a fundamental literary device which forms the main theme and gives meaning to "The Visit". This is because the setting paves out the environment and situation in which Guellen is in from the beginning of the book. All throughout Act 1 the reader is given the idea of how poor Guellen is and everyone is so humble and local. For example, how the train no longer stops in Guellen, how people only buy cheap local brands at the shop and not imported, how they accept Ill as dead for Claire's one million, how Ill is the most popular personality. These examples all show how the town functions, and how they are desperate for money and are willing to commit a moral crime in order to receive this money. The setting in the "The Visit" gives meaning to the play because it fundaments how and why Guellen is the way it is and allows the reader to understand the specific effects Guellen's history plays in the decision making, once Claire offers the one million pounds. So, literary devices also give meaning to "The Visit" because they lay the base for the play and how it develops. • 4. The Lamp At Noon By Sinclair Ross What phenomenon has the ability to transform a meager string of text into a lively, immersive adventure? The answer is literary devices. Literary devices such as foreshadowing and imagery can be an author's most powerful tool when it comes to formulating an effective conflict or theme in a story. This is made evident by Sinclair Ross' ability to effectively utilize the literary devices at his disposal to develop a powerful, efficient short story in "The Lamp at Noon". In the story, imagery, dialogue, and the omniscient point of view from which the story is perceived are formidable examples of how literary devices provide a significant role in shaping the plot, conflict and themes for the reader to experience. Sinclair Ross' "The Lamp at Noon" effectively showcases the power of imagery. When used correctly, it can ameliorate the tone, theme and overall experience that the author may be trying to create for the reader. To begin, Ross' potent use of imagery works to establish a specific setting and mood to commence the narrative. This is exhibited when the narrator states, "In dim, fitful outline the stable and oat granary still were visible; beyond, obscuring fields and landmarks, the lower of dust clouds made the farmyard seem an isolated acre, poised aloft above a sombre void" (Ross 62). This pictorial description of the setting delivers a specific, forlorn mood and ambience to enhance the reader's understanding and of the setting to further improve the experience of ... • 5. Negligence in The Farmer´s Children Essay As a child your morale can be greatly affected due to occurrences that you may have experienced, whether it had been pleasurable or displeasing. It is very common for a child to entrust their guardians with the responsibility of providing for them, but it becomes incredibly difficult for a child to disregard experiences of immense adversity and affliction, as incidents are subliminally embedded into a person's subconsciousness. In "The Farmers Children," the stepmother seems to abstain from doing things that would even remotely allow for us to consider her as being an ample guardian, as she allows for Emerson and Cato to venture into the barn in the inclemency of the open–air with scarce provisions. Bishop admirably attempts to convey ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But if they tried to warm their noses against the clumpy lapels of their mackinaws, the freezing moisture felt even worse, and they gave it up and merely pointed out their breath to each other as it whitened and then vanished" (Bishop 289). Emerson and Cato are facing discomfort at the hands of the brumal conditions, having been conspicuously described. Due to the fact that their provisions are scarce, we are left to assume that they may not be able to make it through the unrelenting bitterness of the cold. We were ascertained that Emerson and Cato gradually "grew numb and cold" and that they felt immense pain. The freezing moisture also had proven to get worse and with no attainable sources of head we are yet again left to assume that death is to be expected. " The Farmers Children," is built on the premise that two boys find themselves in the cold with scare provisions. Clues are presented to us as readers throughout the story as to whether or not the boys will survive amidst the affliction that they are currently facing. The use of foreshadowing enhances our attentiveness as to what is to come. Bishop alludes to other works as a way of furtherly enhancing the reader's understanding of the text. As a reader we are often left to reevaluate and interrogate our initial confrontations of the original text. It allows for tension to be built up as our initial expectations are negated. We are often left to draw parallels in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. An Occurrence At Owl Creek Hill Short Story Analysis In Ambrose Bierce's short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Hill, a man named Peyton Farquhar is about to be hanged for treason against the Union. While waiting to fall off the bridge to hang, Farquhar thinks back to his wife and child he left back home. He thinks of everything that brings him joy in life before his final breath. He is then dropped from the bridge, but instead of dying the rope snaps and he plunges into the water underneath the bridge. Farquhar eventually escapes his captors and makes it back home to his loving family, once again happy and at ease. Suddenly Peyton Farquhar is dead, hanging from the bridge. His escape was only a figment of his imagination. Bierce uses a plethora of literary techniques to produce suspense in his short story. Some of the different literary techniques used in this short story are imagery, symbolism, foreshadowing, some flashbacks, and irony. In the middle of the story the reader is tricked into believing that Farquhar escapes his execution because of the author continuing to explain the fantasy that is going on in Farquhar's head on the bridge. This type of irony makes this part of the story suspenseful to the reader because the reader doesn't know the truth nor do they know if Farquhar will successfully escape his demise or be caught once again. Throughout the time Farquhar is standing on the bridge awaiting his demise he will often flashback to fond memories of his family and even to how he got himself into this predicament. Due to his status as a slave owner politician, he chose not to become a soldier for the war. But he still wanted to support and do anything that would benefit the Confederate cause. One day a soldier in gray told him how a Union fort had been set up near a bridge being used as a supply route to the fort. This gave Farquhar the idea to destroy the bridge in order to interfere with the Union fort. Before he could successfully follow through with his plan, he was caught by some Union soldiers. This use of flashbacks in the story creates suspense because it informs the reader of the events that happened before to bring Farquhar to the present where he's about to meet his end. • 7. Thomas Hardy's The Convergence Of The Twain Thomas Hardy's The Convergence Of The Twain The poem The Convergence of the Twain, by Thomas Hardy, is about the sinking of the Titanic. The title alone describes the ship and the iceberg meeting as one. By choosing this title, the author automatically conveys a seriousness of the poem. The author uses various literary techniques to convey his mockery and careless attitude towards the sinking of the ship. In the first five stanzas, the author discusses the already submerged ship. ?Stilly couches she,? describes the ship resting on the bottom of the ocean. The lines, ?Jewels in joy designed?lie lightless, all their sparkles bleared and black and blind?, point out the waste of money, technology and craftsmanship going down with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also all the jewels that were present on the ship, being worn by first–class passengers were now sitting at the bottom of the ocean floor. The usage of irony represents the loss of the ship, instead of the loss of life. These lines are indicative of the author?s attitude towards what the ship stood for. He didn?t want to talk about the tragedy with all the lives lost, instead he concentrates on the ship and the iceberg meeting. In stanzas VI, VII, and VIII, it is clear about the destination of the ship and the iceberg colliding. In stanza VI, while the ship was moving along, very confidently, God was putting forth his plan. In stanza VII, the iceberg was sitting off in the distance just waiting for the convergence. In stanza VIII, it describes the final meeting between the two objects. As the ship grew closer and closer to the iceberg, and also in its confidence, the iceberg was also growing in its confidence and meaning. The ship thought that it was over God and didn?t need to worry about anything, so God responded back with the fate of the objects to show that he had more power than the ship, and to sort of show who?s ?boss?. The attitude of the author was very indifferent. He chose not to talk about the tragic lives lost in the poem, but rather the ships loss. Through his use of diction, personification, and irony, he gives the idea that it was all just destiny, and there was nothing that the ship could do. God ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A man who became one of the greatest playwright of the Elizabethan era and influenced the audience, actors, and individuals who continue to learn about his written work. The topic of Shakespeare being taught in schools has become controversial. In fact, 25,000 individuals from Alberta, Canada, reviewed the K–12 school curriculum and strongly believe Shakespeare shouldn't be a required author (pressreader.com). However, the study of Shakespeare has become valuable to the literature programs in schools which shapes and challenges the students in influential ways. This can involve the literary techniques and language the readers are exposed to, the knowledge that comes with the studies, the culture it brings and the ability to connect with the stories. Shakespeare is still applicable in today's society and the lives of the students, which is why the teachings of his work is important in classrooms today. Whenever Shakespeare is mentioned, students have a tendency to let out disastrous cries. What is important for students to realize is that Shakespeare introduced nearly three thousand words into the English language. • 9. The Red Badge Of Courage By Stephen Crane The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane, is a fictional novel that portrays the Civil War through the life of Henry Fleming, a young soldier. The reader follows Henry's coming of age story through a strand of events and choices. The fashion in which Crane develops Henry's story, is by using distinctive literary techniques to establish the theme of courage throughout the novel. Henry, as the main character, would not have developed over the course of the novel without Crane's use of courage. One literary technique Crane has used in the novel is irony. In particular when Crane writes that "at times he (Henry) regarded the wounded soldiers in an envious way. He conceived persons with torn bodies to be peculiarly happy. He wished that he, too, had a wound, a red badge of courage" (Crane, 52). This is considered ironic, because all Henry wanted was to be seen as courageous, and the fact that his first real injury was caused by a union soldier, rather than his boldness, causes the whole idea behind Henry's courage to seem ironic. In effect, Henry's actions and thoughts at the beginning of the book, make it sound like he does not wish to be courageous for the right reasons. Henry craves to be recognized as a hero, but does not want to deal with all of the effects that could happen leading up to that. At the very beginning of the novel Henry wants to become someone, he wants to show that he too can fight and be a hero. This is shown in chapter one when it is written that, "he ... • 10. Father And Father In Alice Munro's 'Boys And Girls' Father For a child, a father means the world to them. And with changing social norms, fathers are much closer to their children than ever before. The old stereotype of a cold emotionless labourer has been replaced by the soft caring figure who takes an interest in his kids' lives. Alice Munro, Wendy Wasserstein, and Theodore Roethke all explore this new relationship through various mediums. "Boys and Girls" (Munro) is a short story about a young girl strongly influenced by her father trying to find her place in the world. "Tender Offer" (Wasserstein) is a play detailing the difficulties of communication between a father and daughter in modern times. Lastly, "My Papa's Waltz" (Roethke) is a light hearted poem illustrating a joyful night shared by a father and his child. Among all three works, the children can be seen looking up to their fathers hoping in turn to be recognized by them. This common theme can be traced among the different works of art thanks to plot, conflict and imagery. In Alice Munro's "Boys and Girls", the author employs both plot and conflict to bring forth the strong yet one–sided relationship. Throughout the short story, the main character, Margaret, avoids at all costs the indoor chores her mother is tasked with, preferring to work on the farm with her father, "work done out of doors, and in my father's service, was ritualistically important." (Munro p.4) The conflict between her and her mother only helped to push her closer to the other parent, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about The Awakening by Kate Chopin The Awakening by Kate Chopin In "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin, the emotional state of the central character is often shown to the reader through the employment of literary techniques. Characterization helps draw parallels and contrasts between secondary characters and Edna Pontellier. Symbolism is used in order to outline Edna's progression as a character. At the very beginning of the book, there is constant reference to a caged bird. This can be considered to be a reference to the "caged" life that Edna leads as a wife and mother in the late 19th century. The bird is described as speaking a common language and "also a language which nobody understood, unless it was the mocking–bird that hung on the other side of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a sad spectacle to see the weaklings bruised, exhausted, fluttering back to earth." Edna must be strong enough to survive her uprising of sorts against traditional society. She would, however, rather be a wounded free bird than remain caged. Another reference to birds is the name of Ednas temporary home, the Pigeon House. Another important symbol is water. When Edna finally overcomes her inability to swim, she feels free and empowered. She has difficulty realizing that she cannot swim out as far as she would like to, i.e. she is not entirely self–dependent. It is thus ironic that she ultimately frees herself completely by drowning. Her suicide is her only option in order to not sacrifice herself. If she lived, she would have to give up her soul, and just as importantly, her voice. Characterization is important in "The Awakening" because it shows important contrasts between Edna and the array of characters that surround her. There are constantly a pair of lovers surrounding her, always very self involved and obviously in love. They serve to show her what her life, especially her marriage, is lacking. Mariequita helps show Edna a carefree spirit she is lacking. Her reactions to these characters outline her altering emotional state throughout the book. • 12. The Dragon Who We Soon Discover I had qualms at first about how exactly to complete a task such as this, being that my experience with this type of writing is limited at best. However, I will confess there is much fun to be found in the fanciful wordplay. Not only are we asked to fill in a piece of the story, requiring knowledge of the plot line at this point in the story, but the task also prompts a deeper understanding of the literary devices and influences present in this style of writing. A task of this nature not only familiarizes students with both the plot line and the technical aspects of the writing, but also fosters an opportunity to incorporate creativity and merge all of these dynamic fragments into a single masterpiece. To begin, I considered the surrounding plot of the story. Just before the section begins we learn of the dragon who we soon discover is a major player in this epic tale. Thus far in the story the dragon has played a rather dormant role. Beowulf has been ruling the kingdom for over 50 years and we have heard not a single mention of the beast that sleeps as he guards his sparkly trove of wealth. At this point we are also introduced to an escaped slave who wakes the fiery beast by stealing a gem– studded goblet from the lair. He claims that his thievery was in fact accidental, and so proceeds the tale of his misadventures in the earthen pit. His story recounts that as he was escaping the chains of slavery he unknowingly stumbled upon the lair, by chance finding himself amid the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Use Of Literary Devices Throughout Ray Bradbury 's The Veldt Use of Literary Devices throughout Ray Bradbury's "The Veldt" Ray Bradbury's personal life encounters and his use of universal literary devices throughout "The Veldt" accentuate his frequent themes involving fear and harmful innovation. Bradbury's life experiences, such as living during World War II, also played a major roll in his fearful theme decisions and sadistic writing style. Bradbury incorporates multiple literary techniques into "The Veldt" including: metaphors, foreshadowing, irony, imagery, personification, a simplistic writing style, allusions, and symbolism. In "The Veldt", he commonly uses metaphors, comparing how one item is like another, to foreshadow or create an eerie tone. Bradbury also leaves out details of ranging importance to make his writing more personable; this allows the readers to feel involved in the story. Bradbury directs a majority of his attention on getting his point across using a simplistic writing style rather than bewildering his readers with complex vocabulary and a perplexing structure. "The Veldt" alludes to multiple positively correlated topics; this is a contrast to the dark themes of the story and slightly adds an additional realistic sentiment to the story. This reaction subconsciously causes readers to become more attentive to the disturbing atmosphere the writing is centered around. His use of symbolism contributes to the tone of sinister tendencies in the "The Veldt". Additionally, his use of personification and imagery ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Setting The story takes place in a neighborhood that i estimate is quite small considering Carolee knows her neighbors are gone. The setting revolves around Carolee's home. Her doing her chores in her home and the suspect roaming around outside. The setting influences the story a lot because it influences Carolee's reaction to what happened. She had never seen anything like that in person and it opened her eyes to how society really is. Conflict In the story there are 3 types of conflict, Person vs. Self, Person vs. Society and Person vs. Person. Person vs. Self would come in when Carolee had to decide what she was gonna do. Would she call the police or help the person or just leave well alone. Person vs. Society would be the police force against the suspect. Finally Person vs. Person would be when the suspect shot the other police officer and when he was getting shot at. St.Croix 3 Symbolism I believe that Carolee symbolises many people in our society at the moment. People who are oblivious to what is actually happening and how our society functions. Her reaction to what happened how the police came into her neighborhood and how the man was drenched in blood and was tumbling around showed lack of experience. Saki has displayed a theme of wasting your life on engaging in hatred because death will follow, by using the technique of irony. This theme comes into notice when the forresters walk out into the open to explore. Ulrich and Georg, the forresters, meet eyes in the middle of the open forest. Then, lighting struck and branches from the trees fall down onto Georg and Ulrich. The hatred turned from each other onto nature. Hoping that the other is dead, Ulrich shouts "I'm caught in my own forest land", and then their was a moment of silence (Saki 8). Georg was silent because he knew that this situation he got in, is very ironic. They're on their own land but yet trapped and nearing death all because of this long lasting family feud. Since death is nearing, Georg starts to get into panic mode. He shouts at Ulrich and says, "Death and damnation to you, Ulrich Von Gradwitz", as they were trapped under the heavy tree branches (Saki 8). Georg didn't mean that in a bad way. Analysis of a Poem “We wear the mask” Essay Amber Davis Professor Quirk Literature 101 February 28, 2013 We Wear the Mask The lyric poem "We wear the mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a poem about the African American race, and how they had to conceal their unhappiness and anger from whites. This poem was written in 1895, which is around the era when slavery was abolished. Dunbar, living in this time period, was able to experience the gruesome effects of racism, hatred and prejudice against blacks at its worst. Using literary techniques such as: alliteration, metaphor, persona, cacophony, apostrophe and paradox, Paul Dunbar's poem suggests blacks of his time wore masks of smiling faces to hide their true feelings. ... Essentially, the person of this poem is asking why should the world get the right to know why they are truly upset, and potentially use it against them; instead, have pride, hold your head up high, and put on your "mask." In doing so, the literary term paradox comes into play. This poem is about the true feelings of blacks being hidden behind masks, when also the poem itself hides the fundamental issue of racism from even being mentioned – that alone is a paradox because the poem has a mask on as well. This poem can also be seen as a paradox because this so called "we" is supposed to be wearing a mask when in fact they are expressing their feelings and becoming vulnerable, aka – no more mask. Although each stanza has a bit of alliteration, the second stanza is the most dominant. Dunbar writes, "Why should the world be over–wise,/ In counting all our tears and sighs?/ Nay, let them only see us, while/ We wear our masks" (6–9). The alliteration in this stanza is used heavily with the letter "w." With the use of this alliteration, it creates a sense of flow that helps the speaker get his point across more smoothly. Techniques Bradbury uses throughout the story? 1) Personification 2) Foreshadowing 3) Suspense 1) The most often used literary technique to describe the house is personification, where you give inanimate objects human–like characteristics. The stove is given human actions, "In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior...". This passage shows that Bradbury has given a breakfast stove the ability to hiss a sigh. Stoves are not physically able to sigh. Rain is personified, "And the rain tapped on the empty house, echoing". The rain did not literally tap on the house, it means that the rain was making noise as it fell and came into contact with the house. 2) Bradbury uses is foreshadowing, hinting clues that suggest events that will later happen. The voice–clock sang, worriedly, "...Ticktock, seven o' clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o' clock! As if it were afraid that nobody would". This shows that the house was sensing something

In "The Bicycle" Hannah has her life completely controlled by her Tante Rose. She has no freedom because she is forbidden to break the Sabbath in anyway, and due to Tante Rose's previous traumatic experience with a bicycle, she is absolutely forbidden to ride one. In the end, Hannah chooses to go against her aunts wishes and rides a bicycle. She expresses that she wanted to "prove she had some control over her own life" (Horton 35). Irony, foreshadowing, personification, imagery, symbolism, metaphor and repetition are some of the major literary techniques used by Chopin within this short story about a woman named Mrs. Mallard. Although the story covers only one hour in the life of the main character, the use of these various literary techniques present the theme of the story to the reader in a very entertaining manner. Visual imagery is used in the story by Chopin to help the reader create an image of the words and scenes she is presenting in the story. As an example of this imagery she writes: "there were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other in the west facing her window". With imagery, she also helps us feel the miserable world Mrs. Mallard lived in. "She carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of victory". Chopin also includes symbolism as a literary device when Mrs. Mallard stares out the window of her room. The view through the window is symbolic of a new world with no restrictions and limitations now that her husband is dead. She also used symbolism when she said, "patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds." Her ultimate death due to a heart attack is also symbolic of the loss of her love for her husband. The basic symbol of the story involves the new life she would be able to live alone. Divorce was rare in Mrs. Mallard 's days, but the news of her husband 's death offers her a chance at a new beginning. "She carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of victory." This symbolizes the strength that Mrs. Mallard had during this time period, and shows that she will conquer obstacles in her future. Chopin uses repetition to emphasize a particular idea. The "invisible paddock" symbolises the sky, and as later introduced the view from the sky is the second plane of life. Moulaf has used the lines; "One named Peter, One named Paul" to link the characters of the book to the religious views and ways of living in the 1960's. In the 1750's the rhyme 'Two Little Dickie Birds' talked of two birds names Jack and Gill, in the early 1900's the names were changed to the disciples 'Peter and Paul'. In 'Fly away Peter' Moulaf has used this link between the birds name to introduce the religious connections. The bird peter symbioses Jim and Paul symbolises Ashley in the context of 'Fly away Peter'. Throughout the novel Moulaf uses the literary technique of narration to tell parts of the story. The Influence of Realism and Naturalism on 20th Century American Fiction After World War I, American people and the authors among them were left disillusioned by the effects that war had on their society. America needed a literature that would explain what had happened and what was happening to their society. American writers turned to what is now known as modernism. The influence of 19th Century realism and naturalism and their truthful representation of American life and people was evident in post World War I modernism. This paper will try to prove this by presenting the basic ideas and of these literary genres, literary examples of each, and then make connections between the two literary movements. Compton's). In portraying ugliness and cruelty, the authors refrained from preaching about them; rather they left readers to draw their own conclusions about the life they presented. Generally, these authors took a pessimistic view to portray a life that centered on the negative part of man's existence. When dealing with society directly, naturalists generally detailed the destruction of people without any sentiment. To do this, they wrote more open about society's problems in a more open manner usually using nature as a symbol for society. Naturalistic literature, like! realistic, served as a catalyst for change but, in contrast, was a little more like propaganda. Even though only twenty years may have separated them, the transformation from realism/naturalism to modernism was a long one in terms of how much society had changed. The aforementioned rapid change in American society and America's relation with the rest of the world left America in disarray. After the first World War, American society was divided and left without definition. • 34. Essay about Literary Techniques in "The Things They Carried" A literary technique is a device employed in literature to add depth to a writer's work. These techniques can be obvious, such as the technique of rhyme in a poem, or subtle, such as juxtaposition, which can go unnoticed by the reader. In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien uses many such techniques to provide more depth to his book. Four literary techniques used by Tim O'Brien are symbolism, pathetic fallacy, irony, and juxtaposition. One literary technique prominent in The Things They Carried, particularly in the story by the same name, is symbolism. Throughout this story, O'Brien mentions all the things that the soldiers carry with them, both physical and emotional. However, the physical items that the men carried is more than just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is reflected in the weather at the time of Kiowa's death. The soldiers were camping out in a field along the Song Tra Bong, and "the rain kept getting worse. And by midnight the field turned into soup" (145). The rain emulates the emotions of the weary and despondent soldiers. Pathetic fallacy is a very useful technique because it helps to provide the tone for the story. If the story was a sad one but the weather was bright and sunny, the tone of the story would be wrong, and vice versa. In Speaking of Courage, the fact that it was raining during the main event of the story helps the reader gain and understanding of just how bleak and dismal the events that occurred were. Irony, or a discrepancy between expectation and reality, is another literary technique used by Tim O'Brien in The Things They Carried. Many of the titles of the stories contain irony themselves. For example, Speaking of Courage is more centred on the themes of failure and the inability to be courageous than it is about courage. The story Love is not, as it would seem, about mutual love, but rather unrequited love. Field Trip, an expression with a usually very positive connotation, is a story about a visit to a battleground where many lives had been lost. The Story How to Tell a True War Story also contains much irony within it. The main point of this story is that a true war story cannot be told because the simple act of telling it makes it untrue. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles communicates his themes and morals to the reader through the character flaws of Oedipus, a tragic hero. The most prominent character flaw that Oedipus possesses is his excessive arrogance. One way this flaw is displayed is Oedipus' repeated use of the pronoun "I". In this quote Oedipus mocks Teiresias because he is unwilling to except Teiresias' view of the future. Oedipus is so egotistical and proud that he dares to suggest that he is superior to a high priest of Apollo. Another major character flaw that Oedipus holds is his inability to view a problem on more than one plane of thought. Every time Oedipus is confronted with a situation he makes a rash decision and assumes, because of his hubris, that he has made the best choice. These decisions, however, contribute to the ultimate fall of Oedipus. "I found one helpful course, and that I have taken" states Oedipus, displaying his characteristic of looking at a problem and considering only one solution (70–71). Oedipus seems solve problems with rash and close minded solutions. This can be seen when Oedipus, no matter what the consequences, insists on knowing his true origin even after Jocasta pleads him to stop questioning the messenger: "For god's love, let us have no more questioning! This difference is important because it shows two ends of the spectrum and how the Athens involvement in wars over the 5th century impacted greatly on Athenian society. Aristophanes uses symbolism to portray the coming of the new age, with the younger society of Athens and that the downfall of society is because of the older society. For example, Bdelycleon explains to his father that Cleon is actually treating the jurymen as slaves and that even within the 'elite' group it is corrupt, "But what do you get out of it, apart from this absolute pittance? And even that they squeeze out like little drops of oil, just enough at a time to keep you going. The Poem Australia by AD Hope describes his negative opinion of Australia as he looks down on the Australian landscape. Contrastingly, the poem My Country was written by Dorothea Mackellar at age 19 in 1904. She wrote while she was homesick in England and she expresses her deep passion and love for Australia as she compares the natural beauty of Australia to the landscape of Britain. She shows adoration to Australia for both its positives and negatives. For instance, in Never Let It Die, Watsky disrupts chronology by referencing people "sho[oting] off their own toes" – something that happened in World War II, with the tsar who weren't present in World War II. This acknowledges that oppression and anxiety have always been present in society no matter the time period. Thus, changing the order of events does not change the anxiety of the people. Contrastingly, Eliot uses pathetic fallacy in order to illustrate the anxiety. The first Stanza of Journey of the Magi includes detail of the "sharp" weather; stating it is the "worst time of the year". This negative imagery reflects the attitudes of the three wise men, expressing their anxieties about the new king. Additionally, Watsky uses irony and juxtaposition to highlight the constant anxiety humans possess. Watsky ironically states his "mother is an 8–year–old girl" and his "grandson is a 74–year–old retiree" which is obviously not possible. This use of juxtaposition suggests to the audience that people will never change and that anxiety will always be a part of the world. Similarly, Eliot also uses juxtaposition to highlight that anxiety is fundamental to society. By juxtaposing luxurious things such as "silken girls bringing sherbet" with the negative imagery of "camel men cursing and grumbling", Eliot displays that even in luxury, humans are prone to anxiety. Therefore, to examine the idea that anxiety is a fundamental human condition, Watsky and Eliot both use various literary techniques. However, Langston Hughes' The Negro Speaks of Rivers instead explores the idea that there is always hope, especially when society is oppressive as the two are dichotomous. This is expressed when Hughes juxtaposes the colour of "muddy" brown, which is typically used to describe negative things, to "gold" a colour that is usually positive. This oxymoron ... John Gardeners Grendel Kennings, Existentialism And Metaphor In John Gardeners Grendel Kennings, existentialism and metaphor are used to highlight Grendle's isolation and clearly establish a central idea that isolating one's self leads to self destruction. Throughout the novel these literary techniques help Gardener to establish the idea of an already corrupt mind, collapsing around the edges. As the novel progresses the energy created intensifies and allures the audience. Signs of isolationism in Grendel are evident from the very beginning with Kennings to demonstrate Grendle's emotions throughout the novel. The first evident sign of isolation established through Kennings is found on in chapter 1; it reads "such are tiresome memories of a shadow–shooter, earth–rim–roamer, walker of the world's weird wall." (Gardener, 7). Through this statement Gardener describes how Grendel is feeling, not only does give us insight into Grendle's thoughts, but it also helps to establish the central mood of the novel. The author uses the word Shadow –shooter to give us insight into the idea that Grendel feels like he has been in constant hiding because of his outcastedness, while on the other hand earth–rim–roamer zones in on the concept that he feels he is not tied him down and no can force him into becoming so. • 41. Literary Elements In Literature Throughout history, authors incorporate literary elements to enhance their writing. Literary elements are used to construct an author's writing to portray one's unique style and to convey the message that they want to bring to their readers. Literary elements add to a piece of writing in many ways. For example, an author may voice his or her perspective as expressed through the narrator in a story. The setting of a story helps the reader visualize the place and time in which the story occurs. At times, an author may use the literary technique of personification which gives nonhuman objects human abilities and characterizations. Authors such as Flannery O'Connor, James Joyce, and Katherine Mansfield use several literary techniques to develop their stories and portray their message. These three authors use irony which contradicts what was inferred by a specific character in the beginning of the story. At the start of the story the reader and the other characters in the story expect one thing to occur but as one reaches the end of the story the situation is flipped to be exactly the opposite of what was expected. In the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find", Flannery O'Connor uses the literary device of irony to help get across what he is trying to convey.
