Hip Hop Dance History
People think of street culture as gangs, violence and drugs, but actually , it's a colorful culture with a
lot of good people in it and includes the art of Hip–Hop Dance. There are a lot of types of dance, but
a popular form of dance today is called Hip–Hop, which dates back to as far as the 1960s! Hip–Hop
has a short but interesting history; it plays an important role in many communities, and can be
beneficial to lots of people. People started dancing for religious reasons such as praying and over
time it became a sport (World Book 24). Hip–Hop is its own dance form but it has a lot in common
with street dance and break dancing. Street dance started in about the 1920's and 30's (Torrington 4).
Street dance is basically like Hip–Hop but there are a lot more dance battles. Dance ... Show more

There were a lot of groups named after the Boogaloo music album that were really popular. There
were a lot of popular groups that came up with moves. A couple of the popular groups were "The
Lockers" that came up with up with the "robot", "The rock steady crew", who came up with a lot of
moves like headspins, windmills, old style footwork and backspins (Driver 232 and 233). Hip–Hop
is a very bright and colorful culture on the inside and out (Driver 236 ). Hip–Hop isn't very violent
today, but it was back in the 1980's and 90's, close to when it first began. Today, Hip–Hop is not so
violent because of a DJ named DJ Afrika Bambaataa. DJ Afrika Bambaataa brought anti–violence to
the culture of Hip–Hop by inspiring kids to just dance and not fight not long after it first began
(Fuhrer 253). In the 1980's DJ Afrika Bambaataa started a dance group named after himself called
'afrika Bambaataa" (Driver 228). There are a lot of people who changed Hip–Hop into a way it is
now. As you can see Hip–Hop has an interesting

Dance Concert Critique
My overall response to the dance concert is spectacular because each dance piece was moving,
remarkable, and motivational. Each dance had an astounding affect on me and allowed to me
repelled into the performance. These impressions came from me analyzing the dance pieces, "A
Brief Study of Recent History and "One Heart, Two Worlds", for the Spring 2016 Studio 115 Dance
Concert Series at USM's Dance and Theatre Building on May 4th. The first performance, "A Brief
Study of Recent History" was choreographed by Elizabeth Lentz–Hill and introduced by the dancers
Jennifer Alafat, Megan Bradberry, Shaquille Hayes, etc. While the second piece, "One Heart, Two
Worlds", was choreographed by Dejonelle Gleeton and the performers were Brittain Allgood, ...

75). Modern dance is all about the concentration on innovation. The dance, "One heart, Two worlds"
has a huge connection with the choreographers, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman, a
technique of "music visualization". When it came to creating dances, Humphrey was interested in
group dynamics. She also had a strong connection with music, therefore, music visualization is "a
way to see the music through the dance, sometimes having the dances follow rhythmic patterns
(pg.81). Also, the choreographer, Isadora Duncan, created dances centered on the emotion of
Mother, depicting a sorrowful and broken figure. This emotion relates to the duo dance scene, the
girl connecting with the world of dreaming and the harsh world of reality; however, in the end, she
appears to be broken when separated from her dream. Also, Duncan went against the traditional
form of ballet by creating dances in ways that were more natural, like movements of the trees or
ocean as well as being inspired by not restricting movement by providing the dancers with loose
costumes. The dance "One Heart, Two Worlds" also depicts movements in a more natural way such
as the nature of

Tap Dance History
After hundreds of years of evolution and development, tap dancing has become a truly authentic
American artform. However, no two people can agree on exactly how or where the discipline began.
Emmy–award winning tapper Jason Samuel Smith still holds an enormous amount of respect for the
history of his artform. "Tap culture is all about celebrating the past and accumulating its vocabulary
over time," he says. "If we don't maintain our history, we lose what is valuable about tap." Despite
the questionable and often debated origin of tap, the discipline stems directly from African roots due
to articulate rhythmic and stylistic patterns of African dance, techniques consisting of gliding,
shuffling and dragging steps, and the introduction of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Drummers collaborated with the dancers in such a way that they were able to communicate with
each other through different rhythms and changes in pitch and tone. African dances were extremely
sophisticated, both stylistically and rhythmically. The rhythmical elements of the dances conveyed
conventional rhythms found in various nature patterns. More often than not, these dances were very
repetitive, much like the cycles of life(Knowles). It was this conversational exchange between
drums and feet, drummers and dancers, that evolved into tap. Time step, a basic tap step, was based
on asymmetrical balance, an important aspect to African expression. It includes six measures of
repetitive rhythmic phrasing, along with two measures of rhythm breaks. Often times, the swaying
motion used tended to cause the accented steps to fall on the second and fourth beats of a sequence.
Through their steady patterns of assimilation, imitation, and transformation, tap was created(Source
17).
A common theme to their dances was society's affinity with the Earth. The most common step in
African dancing, which would later become the most basic step in tap dancing, was an example of
this symbiotic relationship. In order to stay connected with the power of the Earth, dancers would
keep their feet close to the dirt. Flatfootedness created steps that consisted of dragging, gliding, and
shuffling step(Knowles). Today's tap clearly resembles African dance because it often utilizes drags,
slides, and

Power Dance Research Paper
During my senior year of high school, I realized the power dance has to expose oneself to a different
culture. Previously, I had trained in mainly ballet, jazz, hip–hop, and lyrical within a studio. I got
thrown into a high school world cultures dance class. The title of the class was kept vague so that
the teacher is free to teach any type of "cultural" dance they feel qualified to teach. The teacher
taught the class about Umfundalai, a contemporary African dance technique. The movements were
contemporary forms of traditional dances across Africa. Along with learning the movements, I got to
learn about the symbolism, history, and origins of each movement. I loved learning about a culture
barely taught in schools through the language I love and understand: dance. Since that experience
my drive to travel, dance, and learn about the world has increased monumentally. I am also inspired
by the stories of my amazing dance teachers' experiences traveling while doing what they love. I
believe their experiences have helped develop their amazing personalities and perspectives which is
helpful when creating art.

that is very important when traveling. Cultural respect allows me to fully absorb the experience and
not make negative assumptions about cultural components that may be different from the American
culture I am accustomed to. It would be a privilege to venture to Italy to experience the beautiful

Mambo Dance History
The mambo genre and dance style have a linked history. Since its origins in Cuba, Mambo has
evolved into many dance forms, each one sporting different footwork and moves. All of these new,
fast pace movements originated from the basic Mambo dance, which was popularized by Dámaso
Pérez Prado. The lively mambo song, "Mambo No. 5" was composed and performed in 1952 by the
Cuban–Mexican band leader Perez Prado. He was famously known as the 'King of the Mambo'.
Prado recorded numerous mambos and when he ran out of inspiration, he would simply number
them. Mambo No. 5 was the most famous out of a series of 8 mambos. (Songfacts, 1) The piece was
recorded in Mexico City in the late 1940s, which was a major media center, and its musical trends ...

Perez Prado was the lead singer of his orchestra. He was born in Matanzas, Cuba, where he studied
classical piano during his early childhood. Later as he grew up, he played the organ and piano in
local clubs. (Brown,1) For a short period of time, he was a pianist for 'La Sonora Matancera', Cuba's
best–known musical group.(Wilson,1) In 1948, he moved to Mexico to form his own band to record
for RCA Victor, a recording studio.(Siegel,1) Prado specialized in mambos, an upbeat adaptation of
the Cuban culture. At the height of the mambo movement in 1955, Prado hit the American charts at
number one with his self–composed "Mambo No.5." The sound of this composition is lively and
upbeat. The song is mostly instrumental comprised of a few monophonic vocals towards the end of
the song. It has a polyphonic texture, where the wind instruments play several independent melodies
and the percussion is in the background as the harmony. The most recognizable instruments in the
piece are the trumpet, saxophone, timbales and the drums. The dynamics throughout the
composition is forte and even fortissimo at certain points. There is a few vocal in this composition

History of Early Dance in France
The culture I chose to research the dance history of was French dance culture prior to ballet and the
different dances that were popular and possibly developed into ballet. I wanted to learn more about
French dance history because I am half French from my mother's side of the family so I have always
been fascinated with the culture especially the dance culture. I have also danced ballet all of my life
starting at age four and have learned a lot about it and its origins so I thought it would be interesting
to see what other dances were popular in France. Having this connection to my culture and my
passion of dance is of great interest to me and I enjoyed learning so much about the dance culture on
France and how it has developed over the years. Also it is fascinating to see what dances have
survived today that are still preformed and danced and how other dances influenced each other to
create new forms of dance. I mostly looked into court dances and what was popular in the earlier
parts of France with higher society individuals and how those dances developed and either are still
danced today or died out and developed into other dances particularly how they greatly influenced
what we know today as ballroom dancing.
The majority of France 's cultural enhancement took place during the crusades. The crusades were
'military campaigns sanctioned by the Latin Roman Catholic

Hornpipe Dance History
The hornpipe is a musical instrument and dance from the fifteen century , it has inspired many
different european musical stylings since it's inception. Many different people have used the
hornpipe and it's musical styling as influence for their music. Musicians have used the hornpipe to
inform their musical style from the late fifteen century to the modern time. The influence of the
hornpipe can be seen as recently as the Drop Kick Murphy's rendition of "Shipping up to Boston."
Hornpipe is "an obsolete reed instrument with a mouthpiece made of horn." To me that seems like a
broad definition you could think of a clarinet, rig and other instruments. The shape of this
instrument is like a half moon but flattened at the ends. The hornpipe was ... Show more content on

Polka is used as the first movements since the decks were pretty small they used this movement to
make room for the next steps. Arms fold is a technique that was created from the way soldiers
would carry their clean laundry. Since their hands were always filled with tar and dirt they would
fold their arms and hide the palms inside to keep the laundry clean. Cable Haul, this movement was
used to pull cable back and forth. Look–Out by the name I am sure you can guess what kind of
gesture you would make. It is the same as if you were looking for attackers, you look outwards and
put your hand up to shade your eyes from the sun. The Pump technique uses a lot of bold
movements with your arms, as though your pumping a tire with air. When doing the move called
hoisting the sail you need to imagine yourself as a sailor literally hoisting the sail, you have to show
the strength needed to hoist the ropes after a long day at sea. All of these moves are used on a daily
basis for sailors so I am assuming it is a lot easier for them to perform the proper steps. Hornpipes
can often be mixed up with a few other types of dance for instance the jig is the most commonly
mistaken for a hornpipe. Another dance that is often confused with it is schottische both dances have
a hippy hop to them and the tune is very similar. There are many dances and instruments that can be

History Of The Swing Dance
The "swing" era consisted of interesting dances, including the Lindy Hop (Savoy Night life). These
dances primarily differed from those of Latin Dance, such as the Rumba, Samba and Mambo, but do
have some similarities as well. Here are some of the observations and comparisons I have made
after watching the videos on these dances. In the Lindy Hop, I noticed the dancing to be
representative of primarily men in the beginning of the dance. Later on, women did come into the
dance to join the man. The two stayed in relatively the same space the entire time while dancing,
and the movements were not super fast. There was, however, a lot of body movements going on in
that time. The music became progessively faster over the course of the video, and

Ballet Dance History
Ballet is a classical dance style that expresses grace and precision incorporating the basic
understanding and techniques of dance. This dance style is used throughout the world as
entertainment and expressing emotions. Ballet originated in the Italian Renaissance stage from the
15th century. In the 16th century, Catherine de Medici began to developed ballet has a dance form
incorporating song, and costumes. This was known as ballet de cour or opera ballet. In the 1700s, a
French ballet dancer named Jean Geogores Noverre wanted to create ballet as more dramatic
narratives than opera ballet. By changing the idea of this dance style, this new idea was established
as ballet is today. Today the same tradition and technique is used through performing, ... Show more

combinations going from the left and right sides of the room during across the floor work. Also,
center work incorporates combinations or sequencing done in the center of the room.
The final step to a ballet class is the révérence. This is a traditional way to thank the instructor and
say goodbye. The révérence can be another combination or a bow or curtsy. This signals that the
class is over.
During a ballet class, safety is essential. The potential student must stretch properly to avoid
injuries, understand their limitations, and perform the correct technique described by the instructor.
The proper technique includes body alignment, posture, shoulders back, and placement. These
safety requirements are important to understand in order to prevent injuries.
By organizing before a ballet class, obtaining required materials, and paying attention to
combinations and safety, potential ballet students can attend a ballet class. This task incorporates a
wide range of requirements and preparations that are essential to performing in a traditional ballet

Exploring each other's dance history was a very interesting way to start the semester. We have all

Exploring each others dance backgrounds provided insight to their own personal dance style that we

interesting, she came from studio dance like myself, however she had the experience of dancing for
the same studio in three different locations. The movement I used to represent this was a simple
turn, which reminded me of my own time dancing at a private studio, that I repeated in three
different areas on the "stage". Similar to Claire and myself Julia, ... Show more content on

History Of The Ghost Dance
The Ghost Dance was a sign of hope for the Native American that they truly believed in. The fact
that many of them would dance till unconscious shows the determination and faith that the Native
Americans had in the hope of being free once again. Not many citizens in this day and age have
faith as strong as the Native Americans; which, can be quite disheartening at times. It is infuriating
how the government treated civil, non–threatening, cooperative human beings known as Native
Americans. In fact, those Native Americans were people that rightfully belonged to those native
lands. The general policy came across as not even seeing these people as actual human beings more
as an unwanted nuisance that could be controlled by means of arbitrary acts

I Have Been Dancing For 11 Years
I have been dancing for 11 years. I went from being in a little dance class to competing all around
Iowa and Illinois. However, I never thought about the history of dance before. This hidden history
project is the perfect time to learn the history behind something I am passionate about. I am going to
bring the history of dance to the light. To make sense of the history of dance we must look at what it
means to us in our everyday lives and how it has impacted us.
All it takes is one idea to start something amazing. The idea of dance when it first became noticed
was with the Greeks. Think of dance now. Now think of a bunch of Choro Greeks from theater,
dancing in a circle for the Gods. Can you believe dance was so simple during 600 BC?
Dance today involves a lot of technique, flexibility, and skill. The technique part of dance is
pointing toes, straight legs, jumps/leaps, and placement of the body. Technique is a very hard topic
of dance everything has to be very precise. This part of dance was established with modern dance
which would be during the 1880's. Dance has changed so much over time.
Why is the history of Dance important? It is a form of art that tells a story. Dance plays a role of self
expression. It has shaped our society for years. It is entertainment that many people rely on for
example professional dancers making a living off of dance. There are many more reasons why
people rely on dance, there is the fact that it is entertainment, a part of celebrations, and

A History of Dance The cultivation of dance in black communities across the United States over the
decades reflects the varied styles, influences and expressions utilized by this art form. "Dance Black
America" is a documentary that chronicles the exploration of dance through a festival hosted by the
State University of New York and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The film delves into the history,
nature, and portrayal of dance, while simultaneously acknowledging the dancers and choreographers
who have nurtured it into popularity. The artistic expression of dance can communicate not only
human emotions and actions, but also one's sense of community. The Jazzy Jumpers of Brooklyn
employed their free –style jump roping to convey a form of neighborhood pride and unity. Each
dancer watches and listens to their teammates, encouraging, directing, alerting one another to their
next move. If one jumper missteps or miscalculates their footing, the entire team is forced to stop.
The four jumpers are in constant movement, rotating from jumper to rope swinger, the slap of the
rope against the stage acting as a metronome, counting off each step. They occasionally glance to
the audience, but for the most part this is a private, deeply concentrated effort for which viewers are
lucky to witness. Each girl pushes herself and it is that determined, focused effort that conveys the
message of pride. Garth Fagan's dance,

Modern Dance History
The history of modern dance dates back as early as the 19th century when Isadora Duncan, began
her career as a performer and choreographer, leading her to evolve into one of the world's most
renown and innovative modern dance influences of the time. A rich history followed with the birth
of other significant and revolutionary individuals such as Martha Graham in 1894 (Terry, 2017) and
George Balanchine in 1904 (Walker, 2017). These pioneers of dance, introduced the world to a new
style of choreography, originally derived from and based upon romantic classical ballet. The Oxford
Dictionary (1989) defines modern dance as 'a free expressive style of dancing that developed in the
early 20th century as a reaction to classical ballet.' Classical ballet has a rigid style, it requires
supreme discipline and structured movement. Modern dance was established as an alternative way
to perform, where dancers were not restricted by costume or movement and used this freedom to
push visual boundaries. Many people criticised the choreography and reviewers in the 1930's–1940's
wrote of how it was unsavoury and distasteful (Gilbert, 1999), although, eventually becoming a
worldwide phenomenon. It can be argued that Balanchine, Graham and Duncan were inevitably the
three most significant dance figures in the development of modern dance choreography from
foundations built by romantic classical ballet.
A variety of expert sources highlight that there has been a clear development of modern dance

bands also featured soloists who improvised during their performance. Sometimes two or three band

Nearly four decades later hip–hop's ever evolving dance moves progressed without missing a single

suppressed energy, and a lack of available outlets. Serving as a medium to empower the youth

Mary Wigman
Isadora Duncan and Mary Wigman both started with the same idea of dancing, and how they should
incorporate human movement instead of ballet that was more unnatural to the body. Even though
they had a similar thought about modern dance, they had one thing that made them very different,
which was their choreography. Duncan pieces were lively and upbeat, and Wigmans were dark and
mysterious. They both approached modern dance through a different eye. Even if they lived in two
different parts of the world, "The American, as represented by Isadora Duncan, and the German, as
represented by Mary Wigman," (Cass 247), the world would then get two different choreographers
that were evolving at the same time in history, which impacted the dance history. ... Show more

She was down rooted to the earth; dark images, death, witches, and war inspired her. She used
heavy and tense percussion or silence. A few of her choreographies' got the chance to be filmed, her
dances looked as if it was improvisational but her pieces were set and stone and made up before
performed. One of the works that basically describes Wigman as a whole is the Witches Dance "Its a
burlesque play of bodies, limbs, and heads. At first a crowded, tangled heap, it starts vibrating
slowly in ever increasing elastic and shaking movements, dissolves and darts out to the floor in
somersaults and grotesque jumps... The demon in the human who had worn a tragic mask in so
many of Mary Wigman's dances now wore a comical mask, as if his dark and dangerous power had
been conquered," (Stewart and Armitage 13–14). Once you go in deeper into why Wigmans pieces
are so different compared to Duncan you start looking at the bigger picture of how Germany was
doing at the time, with the whole World War I (1914–1918) and the beginning of Hitler's upraise in
the 1930's leading to World War II (1939–1945) this was all during the time frame of Wigmans life.

Foxtrot Dance History
The Fox Trot Approaching the 20th century it was hard to pick just one topic to write on. Since I did
not have a good understanding on what the Fox Trot was or how it originated, I decided to dig into
some research. After spending some time I had found that the Fox Trot was one of the most famous
dances at this particular time. The Fox Trot is defined as a ballroom dance that has alternating two
quick steps and two slow steps. "The long walking movements involve a subtle rise & fall action.
Turning movements are similar to Waltz, but with a more moderate rise and fall, and more length–
wise action" ("Foxtrot Dance Steps in Ballroom Dance."). When researching I found that the Fox
Trot was associated with the Vaudeville era and was named after the Vaudeville actor, Harry fox.
Although, that was not his real name, he was "born with the name Arthur Carringford in Pomona,
California, but in 1882, he adopted the stage name of "Fox" after his grandfather" ("Foxtrot Dance

History of Dance in Art
Dance, Music, and Performance
"The Joy of Life"
Introduction
In the nineteenth century some of the greatest innovations come from artists who strove to discover
if art could work on the same level as music. I have decided to research the relationship between art,
dance, and music. The interpretation of dance and music in art continually developed during the
twentieth century. Firstly dance as a subject matter, drawn narratively and may have a symbolic
meaning. This then moved on to dance interpreted emotionally. Thirdly music and dance can be
interpreted abstractly. Endell's hypothesis (Fig.1) shows this idea of art working abstractly. Arshile
Gorky describes abstraction as "allowing man to see with his mind what he cannot ... Show more

It was compiled by an assistant covering sheets of paper with flat, brilliantly hued gouache. He then
directed his assistants to place the gouache precisely on the images to make the composition.
A great advantage of this technique was that it let Matisse experiment with the composition. It
solved Matisse's problems of form and space, outline and colour, structure and orchestration that
Matisse had always sought to harmonize. It also allowed him to pay full attention to the importance
of line rhythms and form which in the past he had to sacrifice to colours and tonal relations. Matisse
said, it "allowed me to seek a new means of expression" which Matisse believed had "beneficent
radiation". Robert Hughes says of Matisse's use of brilliant, luminous, glowing colour of having
"power to heal"
Matisse's technique was neither cubist (such from the Synthetic collage phase during the period of
1911–16) nor abstract, although they are treated as musical compositions, much in the way that
Kandinsky produced in his series of improvisations. Matisse described his works as "improvisations
in colour and rhythm" like those of Louis Armstrong. Jazz music was a big influence in his
découpages. Matisse believed that "when I put colours together they have to join in a living chord or
harmony of colour, like a musical chord or harmony". "Jazz" album (published in 1947) was one of
the first extraordinary results of découpages technique. It

Why Does Dance Matter
Dance can be defined in multiple ways than one such as a pure exercise for some while for others
for, a vital source in their life. All in all, dance has and will always play an influential part in the
world we live in. Dance matters because it represents history and culture, it's a form of expression,
and lastly, dance is entertainment. To begin with, the history and culture aspect of why dance
matters is important due to the fact that it gives insight to those who lack understanding of where
and how the dance movement started. For an example, in chapter 1, it states that the classical court
dance of Cambodia over the decades has become the crucial identity of the what the country
represents. Thus, this is a prime example of how all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dance gives people an outlet to express themselves and is frequently known as a healing outlet for
those dealing with personal struggles throughout their life. Whether happy or sad, people
incorporate these emotions into the way that they dance. Despite, the form of expression it may be, a
person is showing it through their performance. For instance, the Hindu dance which originates
from India can be defined as the body, mind and soul connection. And it focuses completely on what
each move expresses from each individual. In general, Dance can primarily be therapeutic and can
purify the mind and body. Furthermore, another key importance as to why dance matters is because
dance is entertainment. As mentioned, dance can be a form of expression for most, but for many
others watching, it can be seen as a pure pleasure and very entertaining overall. Either it be a result
of showing up in movies, plays, or live performance, dance has found a way to wow crowds for
centuries. Including the most popular shows in modern time such as "Dancing with the Stars" and
"America's Got Talent." Dance has always captivated the eyes of people of all ages and will

Tap Dance History
Dance is an art form that is interpreted into many different styles around the world. Whether it is
used for a traditional ceremony or just for the sake of it, dance is something that brings people
together. Dance is done with music or you are creating the dance yourself which is what I enjoy
doing and that would be tap. You are the one creating these beats and percussions while dancing.
Even with this prior knowledge with dance styles like tap and ones similar to it, I like to learn about
different things that are not known as much, foreign dance styles. Because of this, I have chosen tap
as my familiar dance form and Ardah as my unfamiliar dance form. Tap dancing is form of dance

Africans also used this type of dance to communicate with others. They used to do this type of
dance to express their religious beliefs. In the 11 years that I have been dancing, the greatest part of
my attention has been spent on the development and control of the variety of tones that can be
produced by Taps of the heels and soles on the floor and against each other (Knowles 14). Tap dance
began to appear in stage dance through shows in the1890's. After the civil war, many minstrel shows
were created which became into the Broadway musical and tap dance. Movies were then using tap
dances and they were also using tap dances in musicals. The creation of jazz music also influenced
tap dance by creating styles that used a lot of improvisation. Tap dancing was used more and more
in shows and performances. Back then, Slaves would have competitions on plantations and the
owners would place bets on the best performers. In 1739, a law was passed that the slaves were not

Dance can show us a variation of things whether it is a story plot or retelling history events. Dance
becomes an art when done with passion and enthusiasm. The audience can connect and respond
with the dancer if done properly. When we use dancing in a story line musical we are attempting to
give the audience a deeper understanding. As every story every musical has a "moral to the story" or
main idea.
In the movie "hair spray" the choreographer and director do a great job explaining not only the
history of dance but also a main historic fact. With the classic musical– style story the director is
able to introduce a part of history in a fun exciting way through dance and music. The story tells us
many different things as well as shows us how dance can bring people from different ethnicities and
color together. We can deeply connect with the story if we can understand and experience with story
line. The story begins with a girl by the name of "Tracy" who is crazy about singing and dancing
the, "new groove". She is different then the rest in many ways but pursues her dream as a dancer
without allowing anything to stop her. She shows her enthusiasm for dancing and singing from the
beginning of the movie to the end. The story shows us a part of the 60s when segregation was in

American Dance 1960’s-1990’s
Culture revolves around dance through movement, each telling their own unique stories. Dance is
the center piece for many societys. " Dance is defined as an art performed by individuals or groups
of human beings, existing in time, space, force, and flow, in which the human body is the
instrument, and movement is the medium" (Krause, 24)1. As many cultures differ from one another
dance is one way universally they are able to communicate. Through their bodies they are able to

One of the biggest dance crazes of the 80's was break dancing. It was just moving your body no
rhyme or rhythm. You usually had to be physically fit because of all of the movements required
tremendous amounts of strength to be able to hold yourself up. This only lasted for some time, then
once again peoples interests starting shifting and new fads were emerging.
The 1990's became the time of quick fads and a lot of different styles. If people were going to a
party they didn't just have one option clothes wise to wear. They could dress bright, casual, or even
dress like Run DMC with the pants way too big for them and a baggy shirt. All of these styles were
in. MC Hammer was a big name hip–hop star in the 90's with one of his biggest hits called "U can't
touch this". This was a very popular song and millions of copies were being sold by the day. The
hammer time dance was a dance that stuck out in the 90's. It was an upbeat hip–hop dance, just
moving to the music. Hip–hop was starting and people quickly picked up on the catchy up beat
tempo. Hip–hop has been has never really died out and is still going today.

The History and Evoluition of Dance
Modern dance was created as a rebellion against the prevalent dance forms of the time, ballet and
Vaudeville. It is a form of theatrical dance, known for its continual fusion of non–western style and
ideas, which allows for a fresh source of movement inspiration. Choreographers rejected what they
classified as the inflexible and imperialistic nature of ballet, and in order to be taken seriously as
artists rather than simple entertainers they created a new art form. Artists Loie Fuller, Isadora
Duncan, and Ruth St. Denis are considered to be the pioneers of modern dance in America. Dance is
a social institution, recognized as being an important function in civilized life. The following essay
will focus on the theory and work of artist Isadora Duncan, while incorporating lecture notes and
articles of both authors Sally Bane and Ann Daly to explain the historical situations that culminated
in the development of early modern dance. Arising from the 20th century modern dance was a form
of cultural collaboration and exploration, as well as a resistance to colonial repression. Modern
dance allowed for the experimentation of the new as well as a freer form of dance movement.
Choreographers drew on exotic sources, and example of this illustrated in the work of Isadora
Duncan with her use of Greek culture as a movement inspiration. Artists act as both the
choreographer and performer creating their own conventions, or dance language.

The fundamental nature of the ancient text Natya Shastra can be explained as a guide to the
traditional Hindu theatre. It describes Bharata Natyam key elements, such as; mudras, specific hand
movements and positions used to convey the stories, facial expressions, body movements and
postures. Additionally, explained in the Natya Shastra, the dancer must use emotions, known as
"rasas" to convey her story. There are eight basic rasas; love, humor, pathos, anger, heroism terror,
disgust and wonder, added later was serenity. Families and teachers who taught the devadasis, made
a conscience effort to continue the teachings of this dance for generations through oral tradition.
Originally performed for royalty and the wealthy, eventually devadasis, in some areas, were
considered prostitutes and priests were known as pimps. The devadasis reached an all time low
when the British began colonization of India toward the end of the nineteenth century. They were
shocked to see women singing in dancing in temples, with very little or no clothing. In 1927, temple
dancing in India was banned. However, it continued to survive, in 1934 Rukmini Devi decided to
establish a school, Kalashektras, in Madras. She paved the way for a more respectable dance
movement. When the school was established, Rukmini, changed the name from Sadir to Bharata

Origin And History Of Dance
Origin and History of Dance
The archaeological evidence for early dance includes 9,000 year old paintings found in India at the
Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka, and Egyptian tomb paintings depicting dancing figures, dated 3300
BC. Before the invention of written languages, dance was the one of the most important method of
passing stories down from generation to generation. The use of dance in ecstatic (ubjective
experience of total involvement of the subject) or altered state of mind and healing rituals, as today
in many cultures from the Brazilian rainforest to the Kalahari Desert, is thought to have been
another early factor. Greek dance (horos) is referred to by Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch and Lucian. The
Bible and Talmud refer to many events related to dance, and contain over 30 different dance terms.
During the first millennium in India, many texts were composed which attempted to codify aspects
of daily life. Bharata Muni 's Natyashastra (literally "the text of dramaturgy") is one of the earlier
texts. It mainly deals with drama, in which dance plays an important part in Indian culture. It
categorises dance into four types – secular, ritual, abstract, and, interpretive – and into four regional
varieties. The text elaborates various hand–gestures (mudras) and classifies movements of the
various limbs, steps and so on. From these beginnings rose the various classical styles recognised
today. Many contemporary dance forms can be traced back to historical, traditional,

These dances eventually evolved to include praise songs and myths that were enacted by trained
dancers and actors. By the end of the 5th century BC, these dance dramas were part of entertainment
and provided social and political commentary on the times. Amongst the Romans, dance waxed and
waned in acceptance by the powers that ruled. Until 200 BC, dance brought life to Roman
processions, festivals and celebrations. However, in 150 BC all of the dancing schools were closed
as Roman nobility considered dance as suspicious and even dangerous activity of the masses.
Dancing has come a long way since ancient times. But there are still some similarities. When people
thought up these dances they were trying to express themselves, their emotions, their problems and
beliefs. Today we do the same thing. We make up dances according to our attitudes, beliefs,
thoughts and feelings. The future will also contain dances that will reflect that society. There are

There are two broad categories of Hip–hop dance: new school and old school. Old school of hip–
hop dance contains several styles that were created in the 1970s and 1980s, including breaking,
locking and popping (Bronner 3). The main element of breaking dance is movements executed close
to the ground. Breaking dance is a battle between several groups. Dancers use different movements,
spins with heads, leg movements and arm movements. They dance to the rhythms of hip–hop music.
Generally speaking, breaking is more suitable for males because it is more masculine and fiercer.
Although popping and locking dances look similar, there are many differences between them. In
locking, dancers maintain a movement for a while. Main movements in locking contain lock, points,
and rollover of the fist. Popping dance takes use of vibration of body parts according to the rhythm.
Main movements of popping include floating, gliding, and sliding, ticking and robot. New school
hip–hop dance includes house, street jazz and other forms that were created in the 1990s (Bronner

Hip Hop Dance History

  • 1. Hip Hop Dance History People think of street culture as gangs, violence and drugs, but actually , it's a colorful culture with a lot of good people in it and includes the art of Hip–Hop Dance. There are a lot of types of dance, but a popular form of dance today is called Hip–Hop, which dates back to as far as the 1960s! Hip–Hop has a short but interesting history; it plays an important role in many communities, and can be beneficial to lots of people. People started dancing for religious reasons such as praying and over time it became a sport (World Book 24). Hip–Hop is its own dance form but it has a lot in common with street dance and break dancing. Street dance started in about the 1920's and 30's (Torrington 4). Street dance is basically like Hip–Hop but there are a lot more dance battles. Dance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were a lot of groups named after the Boogaloo music album that were really popular. There were a lot of popular groups that came up with moves. A couple of the popular groups were "The Lockers" that came up with up with the "robot", "The rock steady crew", who came up with a lot of moves like headspins, windmills, old style footwork and backspins (Driver 232 and 233). Hip–Hop is a very bright and colorful culture on the inside and out (Driver 236 ). Hip–Hop isn't very violent today, but it was back in the 1980's and 90's, close to when it first began. Today, Hip–Hop is not so violent because of a DJ named DJ Afrika Bambaataa. DJ Afrika Bambaataa brought anti–violence to the culture of Hip–Hop by inspiring kids to just dance and not fight not long after it first began (Fuhrer 253). In the 1980's DJ Afrika Bambaataa started a dance group named after himself called 'afrika Bambaataa" (Driver 228). There are a lot of people who changed Hip–Hop into a way it is now. • 2. Dance Concert Critique My overall response to the dance concert is spectacular because each dance piece was moving, remarkable, and motivational. Each dance had an astounding affect on me and allowed to me repelled into the performance. These impressions came from me analyzing the dance pieces, "A Brief Study of Recent History and "One Heart, Two Worlds", for the Spring 2016 Studio 115 Dance Concert Series at USM's Dance and Theatre Building on May 4th. The first performance, "A Brief Study of Recent History" was choreographed by Elizabeth Lentz–Hill and introduced by the dancers Jennifer Alafat, Megan Bradberry, Shaquille Hayes, etc. While the second piece, "One Heart, Two Worlds", was choreographed by Dejonelle Gleeton and the performers were Brittain Allgood, ... The dance, "One heart, Two worlds" has a huge connection with the choreographers, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman, a technique of "music visualization". When it came to creating dances, Humphrey was interested in group dynamics. She also had a strong connection with music, therefore, music visualization is "a way to see the music through the dance, sometimes having the dances follow rhythmic patterns (pg.81). Also, the choreographer, Isadora Duncan, created dances centered on the emotion of Mother, depicting a sorrowful and broken figure. This emotion relates to the duo dance scene, the girl connecting with the world of dreaming and the harsh world of reality; however, in the end, she appears to be broken when separated from her dream. Also, Duncan went against the traditional form of ballet by creating dances in ways that were more natural, like movements of the trees or ocean as well as being inspired by not restricting movement by providing the dancers with loose costumes. The dance "One Heart, Two Worlds" also depicts movements in a more natural way such as the nature of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Tap Dance History After hundreds of years of evolution and development, tap dancing has become a truly authentic American artform. However, no two people can agree on exactly how or where the discipline began. Emmy–award winning tapper Jason Samuel Smith still holds an enormous amount of respect for the history of his artform. "Tap culture is all about celebrating the past and accumulating its vocabulary over time," he says. "If we don't maintain our history, we lose what is valuable about tap." Despite the questionable and often debated origin of tap, the discipline stems directly from African roots due to articulate rhythmic and stylistic patterns of African dance, techniques consisting of gliding, shuffling and dragging steps, and the introduction of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Drummers collaborated with the dancers in such a way that they were able to communicate with each other through different rhythms and changes in pitch and tone. African dances were extremely sophisticated, both stylistically and rhythmically. The rhythmical elements of the dances conveyed conventional rhythms found in various nature patterns. More often than not, these dances were very repetitive, much like the cycles of life(Knowles). It was this conversational exchange between drums and feet, drummers and dancers, that evolved into tap. Time step, a basic tap step, was based on asymmetrical balance, an important aspect to African expression. It includes six measures of repetitive rhythmic phrasing, along with two measures of rhythm breaks. Often times, the swaying motion used tended to cause the accented steps to fall on the second and fourth beats of a sequence. Through their steady patterns of assimilation, imitation, and transformation, tap was created(Source 17). A common theme to their dances was society's affinity with the Earth. The most common step in African dancing, which would later become the most basic step in tap dancing, was an example of this symbiotic relationship. In order to stay connected with the power of the Earth, dancers would keep their feet close to the dirt. Flatfootedness created steps that consisted of dragging, gliding, and shuffling step(Knowles). Today's tap clearly resembles African dance because it often utilizes drags, slides, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Power Dance Research Paper During my senior year of high school, I realized the power dance has to expose oneself to a different culture. Previously, I had trained in mainly ballet, jazz, hip–hop, and lyrical within a studio. I got thrown into a high school world cultures dance class. The title of the class was kept vague so that the teacher is free to teach any type of "cultural" dance they feel qualified to teach. The teacher taught the class about Umfundalai, a contemporary African dance technique. The movements were contemporary forms of traditional dances across Africa. Along with learning the movements, I got to learn about the symbolism, history, and origins of each movement. I loved learning about a culture barely taught in schools through the language I love and understand: dance. Since that experience my drive to travel, dance, and learn about the world has increased monumentally. I am also inspired by the stories of my amazing dance teachers' experiences traveling while doing what they love. I believe their experiences have helped develop their amazing personalities and perspectives which is helpful when creating art. I think I will struggle being thrown ... From gaining knowledge about the world through books and the internet I think I have gained a sense of cultural respect and understanding that is very important when traveling. Cultural respect allows me to fully absorb the experience and not make negative assumptions about cultural components that may be different from the American culture I am accustomed to. • 5. Mambo Dance History The mambo genre and dance style have a linked history. Since its origins in Cuba, Mambo has evolved into many dance forms, each one sporting different footwork and moves. All of these new, fast pace movements originated from the basic Mambo dance, which was popularized by Dámaso Pérez Prado. The lively mambo song, "Mambo No. 5" was composed and performed in 1952 by the Cuban–Mexican band leader Perez Prado. He was famously known as the 'King of the Mambo'. Prado recorded numerous mambos and when he ran out of inspiration, he would simply number them. Mambo No. 5 was the most famous out of a series of 8 mambos. Perez Prado was the lead singer of his orchestra. He was born in Matanzas, Cuba, where he studied classical piano during his early childhood. Later as he grew up, he played the organ and piano in local clubs. (Brown,1) For a short period of time, he was a pianist for 'La Sonora Matancera', Cuba's best–known musical group.(Wilson,1) In 1948, he moved to Mexico to form his own band to record for RCA Victor, a recording studio.(Siegel,1) Prado specialized in mambos, an upbeat adaptation of the Cuban culture. At the height of the mambo movement in 1955, Prado hit the American charts at number one with his self–composed "Mambo No.5." The sound of this composition is lively and upbeat. The song is mostly instrumental comprised of a few monophonic vocals towards the end of the song. It has a polyphonic texture, where the wind instruments play several independent melodies and the percussion is in the background as the harmony. The most recognizable instruments in the piece are the trumpet, saxophone, timbales and the drums. The dynamics throughout the composition is forte and even fortissimo at certain points. • 6. History And Culture Of The Dance Kayla RadfordAnnKassie TraNikki Morgan Dance History Final Paper Due: 4/20 History of Early Dance in France The culture I chose to research the dance history of was French dance culture prior to ballet and the different dances that were popular and possibly developed into ballet. I wanted to learn more about French dance history because I am half French from my mother's side of the family so I have always been fascinated with the culture especially the dance culture. I have also danced ballet all of my life starting at age four and have learned a lot about it and its origins so I thought it would be interesting to see what other dances were popular in France. Having this connection to my culture and my passion of dance is of great interest to me and I enjoyed learning so much about the dance culture on France and how it has developed over the years. Also it is fascinating to see what dances have survived today that are still preformed and danced and how other dances influenced each other to create new forms of dance. I mostly looked into court dances and what was popular in the earlier parts of France with higher society individuals and how those dances developed and either are still danced today or died out and developed into other dances particularly how they greatly influenced what we know today as ballroom dancing. The majority of France 's cultural enhancement took place during the crusades. The crusades were 'military campaigns sanctioned by the Latin Roman Catholic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Hornpipe Dance History The hornpipe is a musical instrument and dance from the fifteen century , it has inspired many different european musical stylings since it's inception. Many different people have used the hornpipe and it's musical styling as influence for their music. Musicians have used the hornpipe to inform their musical style from the late fifteen century to the modern time. The influence of the hornpipe can be seen as recently as the Drop Kick Murphy's rendition of "Shipping up to Boston." Hornpipe is "an obsolete reed instrument with a mouthpiece made of horn." To me that seems like a broad definition you could think of a clarinet, rig and other instruments. The shape of this instrument is like a half moon but flattened at the ends. The hornpipe was ... Arms fold is a technique that was created from the way soldiers would carry their clean laundry. Since their hands were always filled with tar and dirt they would fold their arms and hide the palms inside to keep the laundry clean. Cable Haul, this movement was used to pull cable back and forth. Look–Out by the name I am sure you can guess what kind of gesture you would make. It is the same as if you were looking for attackers, you look outwards and put your hand up to shade your eyes from the sun. The Pump technique uses a lot of bold movements with your arms, as though your pumping a tire with air. When doing the move called hoisting the sail you need to imagine yourself as a sailor literally hoisting the sail, you have to show the strength needed to hoist the ropes after a long day at sea. All of these moves are used on a daily basis for sailors so I am assuming it is a lot easier for them to perform the proper steps. Hornpipes can often be mixed up with a few other types of dance for instance the jig is the most commonly mistaken for a hornpipe. Another dance that is often confused with it is schottische both dances have a hippy hop to them and the tune is very similar. There are many dances and instruments that can be confused with ... • 8. History Of The Swing Dance The "swing" era consisted of interesting dances, including the Lindy Hop (Savoy Night life). These dances primarily differed from those of Latin Dance, such as the Rumba, Samba and Mambo, but do have some similarities as well. Here are some of the observations and comparisons I have made after watching the videos on these dances. In the Lindy Hop, I noticed the dancing to be representative of primarily men in the beginning of the dance. Later on, women did come into the dance to join the man. The two stayed in relatively the same space the entire time while dancing, and the movements were not super fast. There was, however, a lot of body movements going on in that time. The music became progessively faster over the course of the video, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the 16th century, Catherine de Medici began to developed ballet has a dance form incorporating song, and costumes. This was known as ballet de cour or opera ballet. In the 1700s, a French ballet dancer named Jean Geogores Noverre wanted to create ballet as more dramatic narratives than opera ballet. • 10. Dance History Exploring each other's dance history was a very interesting way to start the semester. We have all danced together for several years now however we all come from different dance backgrounds. Exploring each others dance backgrounds provided insight to their own personal dance style that we may not have notices before. Claire was the first dancer I talked to. Her dance history was very interesting, she came from studio dance like myself, however she had the experience of dancing for the same studio in three different locations. The movement I used to represent this was a simple turn, which reminded me of my own time dancing at a private studio, that I repeated in three different areas on the "stage". • 11. History Of The Ghost Dance The Ghost Dance was a sign of hope for the Native American that they truly believed in. The fact that many of them would dance till unconscious shows the determination and faith that the Native Americans had in the hope of being free once again. Not many citizens in this day and age have faith as strong as the Native Americans; which, can be quite disheartening at times. It is infuriating how the government treated civil, non–threatening, cooperative human beings known as Native Americans. • 12. I Have Been Dancing For 11 Years I have been dancing for 11 years. I went from being in a little dance class to competing all around Iowa and Illinois. However, I never thought about the history of dance before. This hidden history project is the perfect time to learn the history behind something I am passionate about. I am going to bring the history of dance to the light. To make sense of the history of dance we must look at what it means to us in our everyday lives and how it has impacted us. All it takes is one idea to start something amazing. The idea of dance when it first became noticed was with the Greeks. Think of dance now. Now think of a bunch of Choro Greeks from theater, dancing in a circle for the Gods. Can you believe dance was so simple during 600 BC? Dance today involves a lot of technique, flexibility, and skill. The technique part of dance is pointing toes, straight legs, jumps/leaps, and placement of the body. Technique is a very hard topic of dance everything has to be very precise. This part of dance was established with modern dance which would be during the 1880's. Dance has changed so much over time. Why is the history of Dance important? It is a form of art that tells a story. Dance plays a role of self expression. It has shaped our society for years. It is entertainment that many people rely on for example professional dancers making a living off of dance. There are many more reasons why people rely on dance, there is the fact that it is entertainment, a part of celebrations, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. History of Dance Custom Research Material Provided by Student Network Resources, Inc. A History of Dance The cultivation of dance in black communities across the United States over the decades reflects the varied styles, influences and expressions utilized by this art form. "Dance Black America" is a documentary that chronicles the exploration of dance through a festival hosted by the State University of New York and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The film delves into the history, nature, and portrayal of dance, while simultaneously acknowledging the dancers and choreographers who have nurtured it into popularity. The artistic expression of dance can communicate not only human emotions and actions, but also one's sense of community. The Jazzy Jumpers of Brooklyn employed their free –style jump roping to convey a form of neighborhood pride and unity. Each dancer watches and listens to their teammates, encouraging, directing, alerting one another to their next move. If one jumper missteps or miscalculates their footing, the entire team is forced to stop. • 14. Modern Dance History The history of modern dance dates back as early as the 19th century when Isadora Duncan, began her career as a performer and choreographer, leading her to evolve into one of the world's most renown and innovative modern dance influences of the time. A rich history followed with the birth of other significant and revolutionary individuals such as Martha Graham in 1894 (Terry, 2017) and George Balanchine in 1904 (Walker, 2017). These pioneers of dance, introduced the world to a new style of choreography, originally derived from and based upon romantic classical ballet. The Oxford Dictionary (1989) defines modern dance as 'a free expressive style of dancing that developed in the early 20th century as a reaction to classical ballet.' Classical ballet has a rigid style, it requires supreme discipline and structured movement. Modern dance was established as an alternative way to perform, where dancers were not restricted by costume or movement and used this freedom to push visual boundaries. Many people criticised the choreography and reviewers in the 1930's–1940's wrote of how it was unsavoury and distasteful (Gilbert, 1999), although, eventually becoming a worldwide phenomenon. It can be argued that Balanchine, Graham and Duncan were inevitably the three most significant dance figures in the development of modern dance choreography from foundations built by romantic classical ballet. It uses a strong rhythm section that results in more wind and brass instruments. Swing bands also featured soloists who improvised during their performance. Even though they had a similar thought about modern dance, they had one thing that made them very different, which was their choreography. Duncan pieces were lively and upbeat, and Wigmans were dark and mysterious. They both approached modern dance through a different eye. Even if they lived in two different parts of the world, "The American, as represented by Isadora Duncan, and the German, as represented by Mary Wigman," (Cass 247), the world would then get two different choreographers that were evolving at the same time in history, which impacted the dance history. ... A few of her choreographies' got the chance to be filmed, her dances looked as if it was improvisational but her pieces were set and stone and made up before performed. One of the works that basically describes Wigman as a whole is the Witches Dance "Its a burlesque play of bodies, limbs, and heads. At first a crowded, tangled heap, it starts vibrating slowly in ever increasing elastic and shaking movements, dissolves and darts out to the floor in somersaults and grotesque jumps... History of Dance in Art Dance, Music, and Performance "The Joy of Life" Introduction In the nineteenth century some of the greatest innovations come from artists who strove to discover if art could work on the same level as music. I have decided to research the relationship between art, dance, and music. The interpretation of dance and music in art continually developed during the twentieth century. Firstly dance as a subject matter, drawn narratively and may have a symbolic meaning. This then moved on to dance interpreted emotionally. Thirdly music and dance can be interpreted abstractly. Endell's hypothesis (Fig.1) shows this idea of art working abstractly. Arshile Gorky describes abstraction as "allowing man to see with his mind what he cannot ... It also allowed him to pay full attention to the importance of line rhythms and form which in the past he had to sacrifice to colours and tonal relations. Matisse said, it "allowed me to seek a new means of expression" which Matisse believed had "beneficent radiation". Robert Hughes says of Matisse's use of brilliant, luminous, glowing colour of having "power to heal" Matisse's technique was neither cubist (such from the Synthetic collage phase during the period of 1911–16) nor abstract, although they are treated as musical compositions, much in the way that Kandinsky produced in his series of improvisations. It is a form of theatrical dance, known for its continual fusion of non–western style and ideas, which allows for a fresh source of movement inspiration. Choreographers rejected what they classified as the inflexible and imperialistic nature of ballet, and in order to be taken seriously as artists rather than simple entertainers they created a new art form.
