āSometimes failing is the best thing that can happen to youā. And then it happened. The
worst scenario I imagined had come to fruition. After 4 months as a nurse resident in an ED at a
level 1 trauma center, I was losing my position, I was not used to failing and I never give up.
This time was different; more stressors were stacked against me than ever before. An experience
that taught me how to address different challenges when I face them. Life is full of challenges
and lessons, giving up is a form of quitting. Having learned the power of keeping going, I will be
able to face the challenges I will experience. I was diagnosed with MDD. A diagnosis that Iām
sure Iāve carried on and off my entire life as a result of being raised in a dysfunctional alcoholic
home, resulting in an Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) score of 7. Historically just pushed
through and covered with a Band-Aid of co-dependence or immersed me in work/school to mute
the numbness and fill the void. This is an experience and insight that will make me a better
practitioner, one who will provide a holistic approach, with an integrated care as part of my
practice. Not just because they are proven to be effective for lifelong recovery from mental
illness, but also because they are not currently routinely practiced and integrated into the current
treatment model for mental health.
Iāve not just recovered from my depression, but have also adopted sustainable habits,
gained insight to mental health recovery and treatment that have allowed me to come out
stronger physically, mentally and spiritually than I have ever been, nor would have if I had never
āfailedā. This makes me see myself as a practitioner who will treat from an integrative care/
holistic framework and assess wellness needs of my client while providing patient-centered care.
It also challenges my understanding that one needs to be an active player, medicine/ treatment
should not be done to you, but with you at the center, guiding, contributing, and molding what

one care looks like. I would be a great advocate for self-management skills and motivate people
suffering from the mental illness issues especially the child/adolescents age group to understand
their responsibility for their wellness during and after my program. I would also sensitize on the
responsiveness of the parents on their alcoholic lives. This is because some of the adolescents are
affected by the disorder, not because of their behavior but influence of others like the parents.
The adolescent are usually aggressive and want to try almost every experience in life. From what
I underwent and after I acquire adequate practitioner skills, I would help them understand that an
individual can in a way determine the nature of life he/she can lead.
I am fully aware of how rigorous and challenging this program will be and I have no
doubt that I can flourish and succeed. This recovery journey has made me stronger and not to
suspect that I may not be able to make it through the program. My passion to promote the health
of individuals will also keep me going. As mental illnesses are not fully addressed especially to
the adolescents and children, I would like to be among those who will provide a holistic
treatment to them. The program will equip me with the right knowledge and skills and thus I will
undoubtedly prosper and provide back to the community what I will achieve.
