1. Cultural Codes In The Crime Genre:
There isthree typesof Culture codes:
- Preliterate
- Literary
- Screenful
Cultural Codesare the wayin whichindividualsorgroupsof people act,aswithdo certainactions
dependingontheirculture,theirsurroundingsandthe people theyassociate themselveswith.This
may be whatcharacters like withinmediatexts,orhow theyact;evenwhattheymay thinkabout
certainsituations(suchareligionsandnationalities). Peoplemaydocertainthingsbasedaround
whotheyare, consideringtheirnationalities,beliefsandopinions. Thisvariesbetweendifferent
groupsof people, socially.Thismaybe the attitude of a wealthycharacteras beingashow off,or the
waya Greekpersonmaybe opinionatedbasedaroundwhattheylove intheirownculture. Ifeel
that ‘opinions’are amaintheme whensuggestingCultureCodes.
Withinthe Crime genre,Ifeel thatItalianswouldbe the mainculture used,asItalianshave alarge
historyof Crime andmobsterrelatedactivity,especiallyinareasof America. Incrime films,alotof
propsinclude Italianfood,suchas‘pasta’and ‘meatballs’,whichare referencestoItaliansinorderto
establishthe culture providedwithinthe text,aswithdetermine stereotypeswithintheircultures.
Religionisalsoakeytheme withinthe crime genre,asthere are charactersthat cause violence and
harm, yetare strong Catholics.The innocentcharacters(usuallywithinthe streets,duringreligious
festivals)celebrate theirreligionsfreely,greatlyandproudly. The wayinwhichcharactersdressalso
followsaconventionalcultural code,inorderforthe audience torecognise whoisbeing
representedwithinthe mediatext. Inthe Crime genre,‘suits’are usuallywornbythe mobsters,
especially incrime filmssetinthe 1930’s-80’s.
Withthese Cultural codes,we wouldliketouse themtosupportconventionsof the filmgenre,in
orderto make it recognisable andsimilartootherfilmswithinthe genre.We wouldlike tomake it
feel more realistic,andallowthe audience tofeel comfortable knowingwhattoexpectwithinthe
crime genre film(yet,notknowingthe whole storyof the filmfromthe trailer). We willshow scenes
(evenif theyaren’tlongmoments)of certaincultural codes,suchasfoodor religiousreferences,
and we wouldlike tobringinthe culture of AmericanandItaliansasmuch as possible.Intermsof
usingcultural codesforthe Americancharacters,theycouldbe eatingstereotypicalfoodsuchasa
‘bagel’ora ‘burger’,as withbringinthe ‘Americanflag’todetail the settingof anAmericanstate.
