Mahir has learned several things in progressing from his preliminary task to his full product. He realized titles were important so he added moving titles created in Motion. He also learned that costume is significant, so his characters wear hoodies, hats and caps stereotypical of urban films. Additionally, he chose to record mainly outdoors seeing most urban film action outdoors, and learned about framing and angles. Mahir also learned about using sound, like urban music from Jamendo, to make his film more interesting beyond just dialogue. Through the process, he gained experience using the iMac, Motion, and Final Cut Pro software.

have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

2. Looking back at my preliminary task I have not created any
titles. During my research I have seen that every urban film has
titles which are moving. Due to this I have also added moving
titles at the beginning of my production.

3. I have learnt that costume is very
important, in our preliminary task we
recorded with whatever we were wearing
at the time but I soon realized after my
research that costume is very important so
in my film opening I decided what I want
my characters to wear. During my research I
found out that in almost every Urban film
they are dressed in hoodies and other
accessories such as hats and caps. I decided
to have them wearing hoodies, gilets and
hats because this is a common stereotype
for young people from urban areas to be
wearing these garments.

4. We also recorded our preliminary task inside
school, which didn't make it interesting at all. I
chose to record my media product mainly
outdoors although there are parts inside a
house. This is because most of the action I saw
during my research on urban films were
outdoors. I also learnt about framing and
camera angles as we did not really think about
this when we recorded our preliminary task,
when I recorded my media product I recorded
each shot from different angles and used the
best shots in my film opening. I learnt that
there is no harm in recording extra clips as
they can come into use later on when editing.

5. Sound
Sound is another thing I have learnt about as my preliminary
task only had dialogue, which made it very dull. I have decided
to add sound to my film opening, as this will make it more
interesting. During my research I found out that most urban
films contain urban music such as rapping. I found my sounds
on a website called Jamendo. This is a website which has free
music which is not copyright music.
This was the only reason I used
this website as if I used another
soundtrack from YouTube for
example this track could be
copyrighted. Using this website
made sure that I was legally
allowed to use these sound
tracks.

6. Technology
When I produced my preliminary task I
was not experienced in using the
technologies such as the iMac and also
software's such as Motion and Final Cut
Pro. As time went on I gained more
experience in using the iMac as I was
constantly using it during lessons. I had
no idea how to use the software ‘Motion’
when I was creating my preliminary task
which meant that I was not able to create
any titles for this. I soon learnt how to
use Motion and used this software to
create titles for my full product. Similarly,
I did not know how to use Final Cut Pro
but as lessons went by I learnt how to
use this software which was used to
create both my preliminary task and my
full product.

7. Organization
I found the organization of the shoot difficult as I was in a group
alone so I did not have anyone else I could rely on. I found it
difficult to find actors who wanted to be filmed. There were also
problems with timing as not everyone was available to film
together due to other arrangements. I would do many things
differently if I was to do this again such as spending more days
filming and taking more shots so there would be a variety to
choose from when editing.
