The document discusses how the media product develops and challenges stereotypes of young people. It summarizes that the product mainly conforms to stereotypes of youth getting into trouble, not being trustworthy, and wearing black. However, one character wears a pink top, challenging stereotypes.
The author also discusses how their product was influenced by research of urban films like Kidulthood and Shank. Their product similarly features council flats, quick edits, teenage actors in hoodies and hats, and slang dialogue to match conventions of the genre. Screenshots from Kidulthood and Adulthood are included to illustrate conventions that were developed or challenged in the author's own media product.
1. Evaluation Q1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2. My media product develops many
different stereotypes of young
people. My media product mainly
conforms to the stereotypes. The
different stereotypes, which were
developed in my media product, are
youth getting up to no good around
the estate, teenagers getting into
trouble, young people not being
trustworthy. Other stereotypes such
as youth wearing the colour black
were shown, also a black
motorcycle helmet. There was only
one thing which subverted to the
stereotypes, this was the first
character wearing a pink top.
This screenshot is from the urban
film ‘Shank’. The screenshot below
is from my production.
3. Whilst producing my media
product I used, developed and
challenged several varieties of
forms and conventions used in
many typical urban films. Before I
started my production I had to
carry out research where I looked
at many different urban films such
as Kidulthood, Adulthood and
Shank. I compared these films and
they were all similarly set in urban
environments. One thing they all
had in common was they were set
in council flats. I also set my
production in council flats. I have
also used many quick edits as this
is how they keep the product fast
paced which creates interest. As
you can see the first image is a
screenshot from Kidulthood and
the second is from my production,
I took similar shots to the ones I
saw in other urban films.
4. This research also allowed me to
understand how they use actors of a
certain age in the film, which
indicates what kind of audience they
are catering for. I used two
characters aged eighteen, which
would suggest that the audience
would be teenagers or their late
teens and adults aged in their early
twenties. Our research allowed us to
see that the teens in the films were
wearing hoodies and hats, which is
similarly shown in my production.
Conventions of dialogue. During my
research I saw that in every urban
film there was slang used and a lot
of swearing. I tried to emphasise this
in my production as the characters
also use slang and swear words, this
was not really hard to come up with
as we live in East London and these
words have become more common
now.
This is a screenshot from
Kidulthood, it shows the characters
are of a young age which is why
their audience was of a similar age.
They are young teenagers wearing
hoodies and caps. I have tried to
make my characters wear similar
clothing and also made sure they
were teenagers.
5. The mis en scene also
developed many different
stereotypes such as the
clothing. It is a common
stereotype for young
people to be wearing
hoodies. There is also
money shown on the table.
This develops the
stereotypes of young
people from the estates
making illegal money. The
house has loads of things all
over the place, this
develops the stereotype of
young people being messy
and not being able to look
after anything.
This is a screenshot from Adulthood, as
you can see the room is very messy there is
things all over the table. I also tried to do
this by putting random things on a table.
He also has money on the table.
