The interviewee learned many new skills when progressing from their preliminary task to creating a full horror film opening. Under software, they learned to use Premiere Pro which offered more editing options and helped make the film look more professional. They also learned how to dub sounds, adjust volumes, and dissolve shots. For techniques, they improved camera shot composition, spacing, and learned to use a tripod to avoid shaking. Finally, under miscellaneous they learned to take multiple shots of the same action to avoid needing reshoots, and that planning is important for constructing a film with good flow.

1. Interviewer:Looking back at your preliminary task, what
do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
Interviewee: To begin with I had to look back at both my
preliminary task and my final horror film opening to
identify the improvements I have made. I also identified
the new skills that I had learnt through the construction
of both my projects. There were many points that I have
established which fit in the three categories software,
technique and Miscellaneous.
Interviewer: What have you learnt and improved on that
comes under the category of software?
Interviewee: The software that I used to construct and
make my preliminary task was ‘IMovie’ this was a very
basic and easy technology that I found easy to navigate
myself around the site to make my clip, however after my
preliminary task I had learnt how to improve our video by
using a more complex software premiere pro. This was
because this software gave me more options on how to
edit. It also allowed us to create a more professional
and more realistic clip as after it was constructed it
was very close to the media industry films in society.
The new things I learnt on the software premiere pro was
how to dub sound this allowed us to hear the diegetic
sound of the characters voices much clearer. I also
learnt how to change the volumes of different sounds for
example the diegetic scream from the character ‘Riley’
was decreased in volume so that the sound wasn’t
inaudible. I also learnt how to dissolve individual shots
and credits to meet the conventions of horror as the
black dissolves produced a mysterious and ghostly look to
them. Furthermore through watching YouTube videos helped
me to discover these new editing skills and use them for
my production group’s final horror film opening. I have
also learnt how to use the software of Live Type this was
because before starting to construct my group’s final
horror film opening. We as a class had a lesson who how
to create professional titles and credits using live
type. This was taught through again YouTube videos, which
I found extremely helpful. Live Type was used in our film
opening as the titles and productions company logo. This
allowed us to have moving titles and in a specific colour
and format.
Interviewer:What have you learnt and improved on that
comes under the category of technology?
2. Interviewee: The techniques I have learnt and improved on
since my preliminary task to my final horror film opening
are that the composition of my camera shots must be very
accurate and correct this is so that the consumers
recognize the camera shots. To film these correctly the
framing must be correct to make the sure the audience
have the best viewing they can possibly have.
I also learnt and improved on the spacing of each camera
shot this was because I learnt that there mustn’t be any
excess space in the shots otherwise the focus of the
action want be as affective as it should be. The excess
space not being there also makes the shots look very
clean and doesn’t take any realism away from the shot,
which makes the film very successful to look at.
I have also learnt and improved on in filming that the
camera shots mustn’t have any unnecessary movement this
is because if there is any shaking the camera shot
automatically looks unprofessional and should never be
used. To make sure this doesn’t happen I learnt to use
the equipment of the tripod this was a stand for the
camera so that the camera shots don’t pick up any of our
natural shakes if I was holding it by hand. I also learnt
to take more than one camera shot of each one this is so
that there will defiantly be one without shaking.
Lastly I had learnt and improved on being aware of
continuity errors to do this I learnt that I must make
sure that the characters are wearing the same costume,
hairstyle and makeup to avoid the film not looking
realistic.
Interviewer: What have you learnt and improved on that
comes under the miscellaneous category?
Interviewee: I have learnt that it is better to shoot as
many camera shots from the same action instead of having
to re-shoot this is because then the final outcome will
be much cleaner and professional looking. This is because
when I first shot my preliminary task once I had uploaded
I had seen some errors in my filming, however my editing
fixed some but not all of these. Therefore when I came to
filming with my production team we made sure that we
captured several takes for each camera shot so that we
didn’t need to reshoot.
Lastly I have learnt that planning is a key part in
making a film opening and that it makes the constructing
part of the film so much easier as we have prepared so
much for it. This was shown in my work and my groups work
as the horror film opening had a better flow than my
preliminary task as the story line was thought and
planned better.
