‘Teacher and Classroom Management’
What is Classroom Management?
 Classroom management refers to the wide variety of skills and techniques
that teachers use to keep students organized, focused, orderly, attentive, on
task, and academically productive during a class.
 Classroom management is defined as the methods and strategies an
educator uses to maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to
student success and learning. It also involves controlling behavior that
impede learning.
Factors effecting
classroom
management
1.Behavior- positive
attitude, happy facial
expressions, encouraging
statements , etc.,
2. Environment- a
welcoming well-lit
classroom which is
sound proof, neat and
clean.
3.Expectations-
refers to the quality of
work expected from
students and their
behavior in the class.
4.Materials-the type of
texts, teaching
methods, learning aids
and resources used.
5. Activities- learning
experiences
designed by teachers
to engage students.
Definitions of Classroom Management:
Classroom management is:
 “All of the things that a teacher does to organize students,
space, time, and materials so that student learning can take
place.” – Wong & Wong
 “A set of techniques and skills that allow a teacher to control
students effectively in order to create a positive learning
environment for all students.” – Sternberg & Williams
 “Meaning business without being mean. The best discipline
is good teaching.” – Jordan Reeves
Objectives of Classroom Management:
Effective classroom management enables teachers to achieve the
following educational goals:
 To create an environment for a community of learners.
 Use effective processes to establish, monitor, and revise classroom
procedures which will facilitate learning, and create positive attitudes
towards learning.
 Monitor children’s progress to maintain learning through goal setting
and encouragement.
 Manage classroom time to help children achieve learning goals.
 Maintain a positive classroom environment.
 Develop leadership styles which promote appropriate learning
climates.
 Enable children to develop socially acceptable behaviors.
 Communicate and show by example respect for cultural, social, and
racial diversity and equity.
Importance of Effective of Classroom
Management:
1. Effective Teaching : classroom management strategies help create an
organized classroom environment that’s conducive to teaching. It helps
in establishing certain norms of expected student behavior.
2. Efficient Use of Time : when proper routines are established at the
start by a teacher, time isn’t lost in giving directions. Students
accomplish tasks as a natural part of the routine.
3. Consistency : a teacher with strong management skills creates a
consistent pattern of expected student behavior at all places and
situations. This maintains discipline within the class.
4. Fewer Behavior Problems : the main goal of classroom management
is to reduce misbehavior in classroom. Effective classroom management
requires the establishing of boundaries as well as reinforcement
patterns.
Key Elements of Classroom Management :
1.Classroom Design:
Although often overlooked, the first element of classroom management is classroom
design. It includes the positioning of desks, displays, storage and equipment to create a
warm and welcoming room . All unnecessary and distracting items from the classroom
need to be removed. The seating arrangement of students is also very important.
2.Rules
Development of rules that foster respect, caring and community in the classroom. The
expectations for behavior should be made clear at the beginning of the year by
reviewing these rules with students. Further ,these rules should be strengthened by
reinforcement.
3.Discipline:
Classroom rules must have concrete consequences. Students will test the limitations of
each teacher from the very first day of school. The teacher should be firm, fair and
consistent. He must begin by warning students and explaining the classroom rules. He
must follow-up continued disruption by issuing demerits, detention, or other official
reprimands. He should never, hit, harass, embarrass or yell at students as this is
counterproductive and unprofessional.
4. Scheduling:
The class can be kept in order by staying on time and on task. Cramming work and
instruction too close to other activities can lead to disruptive behavior and poor
comprehension. There should be space before and after every task, lunch, and recess
for students to settle down. Having a regular daily schedule helps kids prepare for
upcoming tasks. The should be firm but fair with due dates.
5.Organization:
The teacher should stay organized inside and out. He must keep student files,
assignments, lesson plans and administrative paperwork in order. It sets a good
example for students and keeps from wasting instructional time. The classroom
calendar, homework schedule and assignments should be posted on the board.
Regular correction of students’ notebooks must also be undertaken.
6.Instructional Technique:
Although one may not have flexibility over the content of the curriculum, teachers
are able to convey information as they see fit. Tailoring the instructional technique
to the grade level, subject area, and students is very important. Varying of the style
and intensity of your lessons is a must. Learning about each of the student's
learning style can also be of help.
7.Communication:
Communication is the most important aspect of classroom management. It is essential to
have clear and consistent lines of communication with the administration, colleagues,
students and parents. Without it, the teacher will lose the respect of peers, the attention
of students, and the cooperation of parents.
Classroom Management Strategies:
One of the biggest challenges for almost every teacher, is how to handle a class. It
can be a struggle for even the most seasoned teacher. Each teacher has to find
what works best for them. Following are some classroom management
strategies:
1. Have A Positive Attitude:
A teacher who teaches with a positive attitude will often have students who
have positive attitudes. A teacher who has a poor attitude will have students
who reflect this and are difficult to manage in class. When you praise your
students instead of tearing them down, they will work harder to please you.
2. Set Your Expectations Early
Rules should be clearly defined from the beginning. Students need to be
aware at all times that the teacher is the authority figure. The first day of
school is one of the most important in how your classroom management
experience will go throughout the year. Start out extremely tough with your
students, and then you can back off some as the year goes along.
3.Develop A Good Rapport With Your Students:
Even though the teacher is the authoritarian in the classroom, it is extremely
important to build an individual relationship with the students from the
beginning. The teacher should take the extra time to find out a little about each
student’s likes and dislikes. Getting students to believe that you have their best
interest in mind , at all times ,will make it easier for you to discipline them .
4. Have Clearly Defined Consequences:
It is important that the teacher establishes consequences for the class within
the first few days. Establishing the consequences for poor choices early on sends
a message to your students by putting to paper what will happen if they do make
a poor decision. It also helps reduce misbehavior.
5.Remain consistent:
The worst thing that a teacher can do is not to follow through with the rules and
consequences that you have been set early on. Staying consistent with student
discipline approach will help in keeping students from repeating offenses.
Teachers who do not stick to their guns often enough are the ones that struggle
with classroom management. This will also result in students losing respect for
your authority and there will be problems.
Conclusion:
• Classroom management is the process by which teachers create and
maintain appropriate behavior of students in classroom settings. The
purpose of implementing classroom management strategies is to enhance
pro social behavior and increase student academic engagement.
• Effective classroom management:
i) . Establishes and sustains an orderly environment in the
classroom.
ii) . Increases meaningful academic learning and facilitates social and
emotional growth.
iii) . Decreases negative behaviors and increases time spent academically
engaged.
• Thus , in an effort to ensure all students receive the best education it
would be beneficial for educator programs to spend more time and effort
in ensuring educators and instructors are well versed in classroom
management.

The expectations for behavior should be made clear at the beginning of the year by reviewing these rules with students. Further ,these rules should be strengthened by reinforcement.
  • 7. 3.Discipline: Classroom rules must have concrete consequences. Students will test the limitations of each teacher from the very first day of school. The teacher should be firm, fair and consistent. He must begin by warning students and explaining the classroom rules. He must follow-up continued disruption by issuing demerits, detention, or other official reprimands. He should never, hit, harass, embarrass or yell at students as this is counterproductive and unprofessional. 4. Scheduling: The class can be kept in order by staying on time and on task. Cramming work and instruction too close to other activities can lead to disruptive behavior and poor comprehension. There should be space before and after every task, lunch, and recess for students to settle down. Having a regular daily schedule helps kids prepare for upcoming tasks. The should be firm but fair with due dates. 5.Organization: The teacher should stay organized inside and out. • 9. Classroom Management Strategies: One of the biggest challenges for almost every teacher, is how to handle a class. It can be a struggle for even the most seasoned teacher. Each teacher has to find what works best for them. Following are some classroom management strategies: 1. Have A Positive Attitude: A teacher who teaches with a positive attitude will often have students who have positive attitudes. A teacher who has a poor attitude will have students who reflect this and are difficult to manage in class. When you praise your students instead of tearing them down, they will work harder to please you. 2. Set Your Expectations Early Rules should be clearly defined from the beginning. Students need to be aware at all times that the teacher is the authority figure. The first day of school is one of the most important in how your classroom management experience will go throughout the year. Start out extremely tough with your students, and then you can back off some as the year goes along.
  • 10. 3.Develop A Good Rapport With Your Students: Even though the teacher is the authoritarian in the classroom, it is extremely important to build an individual relationship with the students from the beginning. The teacher should take the extra time to find out a little about each student’s likes and dislikes. Getting students to believe that you have their best interest in mind , at all times ,will make it easier for you to discipline them . 4. Have Clearly Defined Consequences: It is important that the teacher establishes consequences for the class within the first few days. Establishing the consequences for poor choices early on sends a message to your students by putting to paper what will happen if they do make a poor decision. It also helps reduce misbehavior. 5.Remain consistent: The worst thing that a teacher can do is not to follow through with the rules and consequences that you have been set early on. Staying consistent with student discipline approach will help in keeping students from repeating offenses. Teachers who do not stick to their guns often enough are the ones that struggle with classroom management. This will also result in students losing respect for your authority and there will be problems.
