2.  The Head Teacher’s Role
If you studied to become a teacher of English, do you
need to know just the language? Most of the people
who study or want to study a major related to teaching,
could believe that this is an easy job where you just
have to know about your area; it means science,
language or math, but nothing else.
Well, it is known that the first thing that you need to be
a good professional in this educational area is called
VOCATION. This is a kind of “ingredient” that all
teachers should have, because when you face the
reality of different schools you realize that there is a big
world outside the classroom where you were taught.
Being a teacher is absolutely not an easy task, not even
for the ones that have been involved in the educational
system for years. People and society in general
changes, so we need to be prepared and updated with
our knowledge in order to be a better leader.

3. But, what about the role that most of the teachers have
to play into a school? I’m talking about being a head
teacher. This is another aspect that may be considered
as part of the teacher’s task and we need to be
prepared. Here you don’t need to know just a specific
area like the ones mentioned at the beginning; you
need to have characteristics of a guide, leader and
psychologist sometimes. Because as a head teacher
you have to deal not only with students but also with
their parents so you have to be able to develop a good
environment with the group you are in charge of and a
good relationship with their representatives. As head
teacher you must be prepared to give counseling lesson
too, it means talk about moral, life projects, sexuality
and some other aspects; and sometimes we are not
taught about these things at university when we are
being prepared to be a teacher.

4. In my humble opinion, when we talk about the
competences of a teacher, we should focus in this
important point. Because, too many people believe that
you are competent if you know every single word in
English for example, or if you are extremely good
solving Math’s problems as teacher of that subject; but
have the capacity of control and lead a group as a head
teacher is as important as the knowledge about your
subject. I could say that this is even more important if
you think about our society today, there is a lack of
values and social interaction or affection that is
influencing our children every day. Moreover, the role of
the head teacher is in danger if we don’t know how to
deal with it, and if we don’t know how to deal with
people nowadays. It is our duty as a new generation of
teachers, to get informed and to get prepared to take
this role in the close future and with our motivation we
have to encourage teacher with more years of
experience to take control of it.
