Teaching kids 3 basic spelling rules when adding word endings #-ed and #-ing.
Rule 1: Words Ending in a Consonant: a) when changing a one-syllable word with a short vowel to past tense, the final consonant is usually doubled before adding -ed and b) when changing a one-syllable word to present tense, the final consonant is usually doubled before adding -ing.
Rule 2: Words Ending in Silent e: a) When changing a word that ends with a silent e to past tense, drop the e before adding -ed and b) when changing a word that ends with a silent e to present tense, drop the e before adding -ing.
Rule 3: Words Ending in y a)when changing a word that ends in y proceeded by a consonant to past tense, change the y to i and add -ed and b) when changing a word that ends in y proceeded by a consonant to present tense, keep the y and add -ing.
