Activity 3: The Characteristics of an Entrepreneur
Objectives:
✓ Describe the characteristics of an entrepreneur
✓ Understand how entrepreneurial characteristics can make you a better
employee in the workplace
✓ Assess the level of your personal entrepreneurial characteristic
 Recommended Time: 90-120 minutes
When you think of an entrepreneur, what characteristics come to your mind? Someone
who is easily defeated, or someone who keeps trying, even when facing challenges?
Come up with at least three characteristics of a successful entrepreneur, and write them
here:
Now read the story about Arya, and note which entrepreneurial characteristics she
demonstrates. Then compare your list to the information in Key Facts 9.2
Read the story: Arya – The Young Entrepreneur:
Though Arya never finished primary school, she had big dreams of starting her own
business. Her opportunity for success came when she enrolled in work readiness and
entrepreneurship training programs. During the entrepreneurship training, she learned
different aspects of how to operate a successful business, and was inspired to finally
launch her own business.
Arya started making and selling hot dogs in front of a school. Selling hot dogs seemed to
be a profitable business with little investment. Though she had very little money with
which to start, it was just enough to start small and grow over time.
Module 9: Adopting an Entrepreneurial Mindset in the Workplace (NC I) Learner’s Handbook
Work Readiness Modules on 21st
Century Skills | USAID Opportunity 2.0 Program| Philippines Page 16
Every day, Arya gets up and prepares her hot dog stall. Hot dogs are popular among the
young and old alike. According to Arya, students on their lunch break represent her largest
customer base. Every day, students flow to Arya’s stall to buy her delicious hot dogs
during lunch time. Then again after school, more students on their way home visit Arya
to catch the last batch of hot dogs.
In the future, Arya plans to increase her business to sell other foods in addition to hot
dogs, like grilled chicken and sandwiches. She hopes to obtain a loan in order to expand
her business in the next three years. Lessons on customer care, time management, and
record keeping helped Arya achieve success, and she knows the importance of paying
attention to details. In addition, Arya has learned to deal with unexpected outcomes, and
how to learn from them to keep improving her business.
Because of her training, Arya now has the motivation, knowledge, confidence, and
discipline to build and expand the business she had always dreamed of creating.
 Based on Arya’s story, write a least 5 entrepreneurial characteristics that she has. You can
refer to Key Facts 9.2 below.
 Key Facts 9.2: Characteristics of an Entrepreneur
1. Hard Working: running a business requires a lot of energy and drive. This involves the
ability to work for long hours when necessary.
2. Self-Confident: to succeed, entrepreneurs have to believe in themselves and in their
ability to achieve the goals they have set for themselves.
3. Communicates clearly: an entrepreneur communicates every day with a variety of
different people, including customers, suppliers, and employees. Clear communication –
whether in writing, in person, over the phone or over the internet – is critical to avoiding
challenges in running a business.
Module 9: Adopting an Entrepreneurial Mindset in the Workplace (NC I) Learner’s Handbook
Work Readiness Modules on 21st
Century Skills | USAID Opportunity 2.0 Program| Philippines Page 17
4. Profit-Oriented: interest in generating money is a clear indicator of an entrepreneur’s
suitability for being a business owner. Once profits are generated, the entrepreneur can
make decisions about how the profits can be used – to expand the enterprise or for
personal use.
5. Goal-Oriented: success in business depends upon being able to set realistic goals or
targets and to work with determination to achieve them.
6. Persistent: all businesses, even successful ones, face challenges. Being persistent in
solving a problem is one of the keys to being a successful entrepreneur.
7. Willingness to Learn: an entrepreneur knows he/she does not know everything, and
strives to keep learning and adapting to improve the business. All businesses inevitably
contain failures as well as successes. Recognizing and learning from failures is an
essential characteristic of an entrepreneur.
8. Demonstrates Initiative: research shows that successful entrepreneurs take the
initiative and put themselves in positions where they are personally responsible for
success or failure.
9. Willing to Listen: entrepreneurs listen to other people. They value hearing other
people’s ideas and advice. They evaluate others’ advice, and sometimes make
improvements to their businesses using that feedback.
10. Copes with Uncertainty: being an entrepreneur is much more uncertain than
employment. This uncertainty is about sales and turnover, but it often also exists in
other areas such as material delivery and prices, and bank support. An ability to cope
with this uncertainty without becoming too stressed is a necessary trait of being an
entrepreneur.
11. Builds on Strengths: successful business people base their work upon the strength(s)
they have, such as manual skills, communication skills, selling skills, organizational skills,
writing skills, knowledge of a particular product or service, knowledge of people in a
trade and ability to make and use a network of contacts.
12. Focuses on Customer Service: Customers are essential for a business to succeed, and
successful business owners put good customer service first. They continually build their
customer base.
13. Reliable and Has Integrity: the qualities of honesty, fair dealing and reliability in terms
of doing what one has promised to do are essential traits of an entrepreneur.
Module 9: Adopting an Entrepreneurial Mindset in the Workplace (NC I) Learner’s Handbook
Work Readiness Modules on 21st
Century Skills | USAID Opportunity 2.0 Program| Philippines Page 18
14. Pays Attention to Details: an entrepreneur keeps track of everything related to the
business. This includes managing time well, keeping records of inventory and customers,
and financial management and planning.
15. Risk-Taker: Entrepreneurs have the ability to take measured or calculated risks. Such risks
involve working out the likely costs and gains, the chance of success and the belief in
oneself to make the risk pay off.
After reading and reflecting on each of the characteristics, provide your answers to the
following questions:
1. Do you think that any Employee in an organization should also possess these
characteristics of being entrepreneurial? Why or why not?
2. Assess the level of your personal entrepreneurial characteristics by putting the following

After 3 years of operating her mini snack business, Arya has been able to successfully
grow her business into a bigger one. She now operates a snack house at the front of her
former school. Her snack house offers a menu of hotdogs, sandwiches, burgers, fries,
spaghetti and grilled chicken.
The store has table and chairs for the customers’ comfort. The customers can easily
select their orders because there is an overboard where all the product offerings are
indicated along with the prices. There is a signage that says “Pay Upon Order”. After
paying, customers are assured that their orders will be served within 5 minutes.
Arya’s customers always comment that her snack products are very good and tasty and
prices are affordable. They would also say that service quality is very good too since the
staff are always very pleasant, accommodating to customers, they always say thank you
and smile and that her snack house is clean where customers feel safe to eat and stay.
These are just some of the reasons why they visit at Arya’s Snack House.
And by the way, Arya is looking for 2 staff for her new small snack house in front of
another school! Maybe you want to apply!

Activity 5: Cost-Effective Measures in the Workplace
Objectives:
✓ Determine the importance and benefits of being cost-conscious in the
workplace
✓ Identify various ways for an employee or worker to be cost-conscious
 Recommended Time: 45 – 90 minutes
Think of a time when you saw someone being wasteful. Maybe you saw someone throw
away a mobile phone instead of trying to repair it, or a service crew member giving
away 20 ketchup packets for one order of fries. What did you see that was wasteful?
How did you decide that what the person did was wasteful?
We know that Arya is concerned about maintaining quality in her business. Part of
focusing on quality includes being cost-conscious. Read Key Facts 9.4 below for more
information.
 Key Facts 9.4: What is Cost-consciousness?
• Cost-conscious means being aware that everything has costs, and not being wasteful
with resources. It also means not spending money unnecessarily.
• Employees can be cost-conscious by paying attention to details and not wasting time
or resources.
• Business owners usually appreciate cost-conscious employees, as they save the
owner from spending extra money.

Let’s Apply! Being Cost-Conscious at Arya’s Snack House
Background Scenario:
Congratulations! You have been hired as one of the staff of the new branch of Arya’s Snack
House. You know that quality, including being cost-conscious, is important to Arya.
Instruction: Read each example and tick the box for either cost-conscious or wasteful:
Example Cost-Conscious Wasteful
Turning off the lights/equipment when not in use
Making mistakes when preparing customer orders
Leaving water in the sink running all the time
Not cleaning the equipment regularly
Buying supplies from suppliers that offer similar
quality but for a more affordable price
Check your answers at the end of the module. If you have questions, you can reach out to the
trainer or someone in your household who knows about keeping costs down for help.
Reflect and answer the following questions:
1. Arya, the snack house owner, is cost-conscious. In your own understanding, what do we
mean by cost-consciousness?
2. Why do you think it is important to be cost-conscious as an employee? What are the
benefits of being cost-conscious?

3. As a future employee or entrepreneur, in what ways do you practice being cost-
conscious?
 Key Facts 9.5: Cost-Conscious Practices at Work
The common definition is being aware of the cost of various products and services and being
careful not to spend money on unnecessary items. The following are tips for practicing cost-
conscious habits as an employee:
• Pay attention to details: This will help you make fewer mistakes that waste resources.
• Take care of your workspace: Whether you work in a snack house, a clothing shop, a
factory, or a farm, keeping your work area clean and tidy means the equipment will last
longer. Not having to replace equipment very often saves money.
• Remember that time is an important resource: Managing your time well is a way to be
a cost-conscious employee. This means you can do your work, maintaining quality
standards, in the time you have.

Arya started making and selling hot dogs in front of a school. Selling hot dogs seemed to be a profitable business with little investment. Though she had very little money with which to start, it was just enough to start small and grow over time.
