6. EPL Survey – Live on Canvas
As you prepare for the self-assessment workshop, an
“Entrepreneurship, Professionalism, and Leadership”
(EPL) survey is available on Canvas
The survey is a self assessment tool to give you a
snapshot of your current career propensity in the
general areas of Entrepreneurship, Professionalism,
and Leadership.
It will require only 15 to 20 minutes of your time
It is a required component of the course. It is due
during week 3. There will be a debrief in week 4.

7. The nature of work and employment
Last week, we talked about why you chose to
obtain a BBA.
One of the reasons identified was to build a
skillset to help you launch a meaningful and well
paying career.
The nature of work has changed over the past 30
years, moving away from mechanical, repetitive
tasks to work that focuses on problem-solving
and critical thinking.
The employment rate has remained fairly stable;
rather, the type of work has changed.

8. The great technology debate
Will technology destroy jobs or create them?
We’ve gone from being hunter/gatherers to an
agrarian economy to an industrial economy to a
knowledge economy. What’s next?
There is no consensus.
However, one thing is clear — the notion of what
constitutes a job has/will change over time.
8

9. What does this mean for you?
1. The job you want today may not be available by
the time you graduate.
2. The job you start when you graduate may not be
available in 10 years.
3. You will most likely not be satisfied in a static job
with no (or slow) opportunities for growth and
promotion.

10. What does this mean for you?
Therefore you want to be in a position to
take advantage of future trends in jobs or
advancement and to have your choice of
career movement.
In other words, you need to future-proof
yourself.
10

11. So how do you future-proof yourself?
Adopt an intentional learning mindset.
Create and follow a dynamic professional
development plan.
Set and pursue short- and long-term professional
goals (from your PD plan).

12. Adopt an intentional learning mindset.
McKinsey & Company would argue that this is the
most fundamental skill you need to acquire.
What does this mean and how can you take
advantage of available opportunities during your
academic journey at the Beedie School of
Business?
To answer those questions, you need to
understand the context in which McKinsey &
Company makes that claim.

Adopt an intentional learning mindset.
Given the way jobs are constantly evolving and
the “re-skilling” necessary for your future job,
intentional learning enables you to maximize
personal value as you progress through your
professional career.

14. Unlocking intentionality.
1. Through formal academic education:
• Choosing to go to university, and
• Choosing Business as a major (or any major,
really).
2. Train yourself to make everyday learning an
automatic behaviour — adopt a growth mindset:
• Starts at the Beedie School of Business, and
• Continues in your professional life.

15. Mindsets:
According to the Oxford dictionary, a mindset is
an established set of attitudes … concerning
culture, values, philosophy, frame of mind,
outlook, and disposition.
Carol Dwecks’s seminal research in the mid-
2000s was guided by her desire to understand
“what made people tick.”
She articulated the notion of fixed and growth
mindsets.

16. Mindsets:
In a 2012 interview, she summarized her views:
• In a fixed mindset, students believe their basic
abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just
fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that’s
that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all
the time and never look dumb.

17. Mindsets:
In a 2012 interview, she summarized her views:
• In a growth mindset, students understand that
their talents and abilities can be developed
through effort, good teaching and persistence.
They don’t necessarily think everyone’s the same or
anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone
can get smarter if they work at it.

19. Enabling a Growth Mindset: Feed Your Curiosity
Strengthen your curiosity by facing your fears and
trying something new.
• University is the safest place to “fail”, so take
advantage and experiment
• At the BsB, we have many co-curricular and extra-
curricular opportunities to try-out.
• Don’t be afraid to try.

Practice Regular Reflection
• Reflection is a diagnostic skill that helps you
evaluate yourself and determine your
learning needs.
– Before (thinking ahead how you will
complete a task)
– During (allows for making adjustments during
the task), and
– After (look back and make adjustments for
the future).
