2. Industrial Emission
Industrial
emissions are
inorganic waste
products in
gaseous form
that are emitted
by industrial
plants. They
vary in
composition
and volume and
are usually
harmful to the
environment.
3. Contents of Industrial
Emissions
SN Name Description
1 CO Carbon MonoOxide
2 H2S Hydrogen Sulphide
3 NO (NOx) Nitric Oxide
4 NO2 (NOx) Nitrogen DiOxide
5 NOx (others) Oxides of Nitro
6 O3 Ozone
7 SO2 (SOx) Sulphur Dioxide
8 NH3 Ammonia
9 THC Total Hydro Carbon
10 PM 10 Particulate Matter 10
11 PM 2.5 Particulate Matter 2.5
4. Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless,
tasteless and toxic gas produced as a by-
product of combustion. Any fuel burning
appliance, vehicle, tool or other device has the
potential to produce dangerous levels of
carbon monoxide gas.
5. Effects of Carbon Monoxide
Oxygen-Carrying
Hemoglobin
Carboxy-Hemoglobin
(COHb)CO
6. Effects of Carbon Monoxide
COHb Symptoms and Medical Consequences
10
No symptoms. Heavy smokers can have as much
as 9% COHb
15 Mild headache
25
Nausea and serious headache. Fairly quick
recovery after treatment with oxygen and/or fresh
air
30
Symptoms intensify. Potential for long term effects
especially in the case of infants, children, the
elderly, victims of heart disease and pregnant
women
45 Unconsciousness
10. Hematic Effects
Oxygen deprivation with Cyanosis
Cannot think straight or concentrate
Cardiac Dysrhythmias &Circulatory Failure
Heart beat is not regular
Central Nervous System(CNS) Damage
Damage to the brain leading to dumbness
15. Ozone
Protects the Earth from
harmful UV Rays from
the sun
Ground-level Ozone is
an air pollutant with
harmful effects on the
respiratory system
16. Effects of Ozone
Bronchial Hyper-Responsiveness
Increases the reactivity of the airways to other
inhaled substances
Accute Symptoms
cough, shortness of breath, tightness of the
chest, a feeling of an inability to breathe
(Dyspnea), dry throat, wheezing, headache and
nausea
Severe Effects
Reduced lung function , Blue Skin, Respiratory
Organ Inflammation

Health Effects
10 PPB Mild skin irritation
20 PPB Painful skin irritation
30 PPB Chemical burns &
blistering
30+ PPB Death when breathed
24. Particulate Matter
Commonly known as DUST
Composed of tiny particles of solid or liquid
suspended in a gas or liquid medium
Classification of PM
PM10 those which are10 micrometers (um)
PM 2.5 those which are 2.5um
PM1 those which are 1um
28. Effects of PM
Increased respiratory symptoms, such as
irritation of the airways, coughing, or difficulty
breathing
Decreased lung function
Aggravated asthma
Development of chronic bronchitis
Irregular heartbeat
Non-fatal heart attacks
Premature death in people with heart or lung
disease
