14. PARK PRINCIPLE - A Patchwork
LANDSCAPE A patchwork of fields
HISTORY The textile industry and the breweries
PATCHWORK SHAPE
PEOPLE The People of Leeds , students, elderly, children and
families should feel that the park is theirs, and experience a
sense of ownership.
The shape of the park is a representation of a patchwork, and also of the Yorkshire land-
scape with its patches of land. A City Park is complex, with many functions, meanings
and features. The patchwork concept allows all the individual characters of the park to NATURE AND PRODUCTION Biodiversity and food production
function on their own, but also brings them together and creates a whole. Each part has will be part of the park with natural landscape
its own content and meaning and represents an ingredient of what the park will contain.
CONNECTION The park should connect to its surroundings
and be easy to access.
LIVING We will have to adapt to a new way of living that does
not tear on the environment.
TRAVEL The super tram, cycling and walking should be the
main ways of transportation.
PATCHWORK CONTENT
15. • The initial concept for the green space of Leeds was to create a design that
was laid out to the clients brief.
• This project required an improvement on the design and to increase the green
space and park area.
• The design also required the number of developments to be matched or in-
creased but to keep within the original context of the brief.
