LEARNING STRATEGY
In language learning it is a way in which a leaner attempts to work out the
meanings and uses of words, grammatical rules , abilities to speak the
language and other aspects of a language, for axample by the use
generalization and inferencing.
TYPES OF LEARNING STRATEGIES :
Learning strategies are defined as thoughts or activities that assist in
enhancing learning out comes . Strategies by definition are probably
performed with awareness or else they would not be strategic , although the
same mental operations can be perfomed without awareness once they are
proceduralized and have the same beneficial result with learning , Three broad
categories of learning strategies have been proposed in the cognitive
literature . These are :
a) Metacognitive Strategies : use in planning for learning , monitoring one’s
own comprehension and production , and evaluating how well one has
achieved a learning objective .
b) Cognitive Strategies :manipulating : the material to be learned mentally
(as in making images or elaborating) or phisically as in grouping items
to be learned or taking notes )through rehearsal organization or
elaboration .
c) Social Affective Strategies : interacting with another person in order to
assist learning as in cooperative learning and asking questions for
clarification , or using affective control to assist learning tasks.
d) Metacognitive Knowledge : Understanding one’s own learning
processes, the nature of the learning task , and the strategies that
should be effective .
The application of strategies to learning activities is assisted by what is
referred to as Metacognitive Knowledge or knowledge of the task
characteristics , of one’s experiences with similar task , and of strategies one
can deploy in learning new information on the task .
