LO4: Understand the target audiences of media products
Imaginary entities and audience profiles
Task 1
The ideal audience member for Q magazine would be from 25-40
year olds since the median age of readers is 39 and it is Ed Sheeran’s,
who is 28, favourite magazine. The ideal audience for NME would be
for males in their 20s because 76% of people who buy the magazine
are men and the median age is 23.
One reason why a company would have an ideal audience in mind
before a product is made is so that they know where to advertise it,
for example if they are aiming their product at teenagers they would
most likely advertise it on social media platforms such as Instagram
and Snapchat whereas if a company were aiming their product at
people aged 40 and above they would most likely advertise it on TV
or in the newspaper. Another reason why a company would have an
ideal audience in mind before a product is made is to know how to
advertise their product, for example kids aged 4-10 would want to
see an advert that has a more playful approach and a lot of simple
words whereas older teenagers and adults would rather see a more
serious advert where they can be informed of all the information
about the product and would also understand more complex words
in the advert.
One method a company might use to research their target audience
would be to look at other products made by companies that are
targeting the same audience and see what the audience enjoy about
that product and see if there is any way to incorporate the ideas into
their product. This could also help them to know what the target
audience are interested in these days which could help them come
up with an idea for a product.
Knowing the ideal audience member could help with the funding of
the product because they will be able to give the person funding the
product a clear understanding of who they are targeting and then
the person funding would be able to look at their product and make
a decision as to whether or not they think the product will be a
success and how much they want to spend on the funding.
Task 2
Audience profile and imaginary entities for Fast and Furious Hobbs
and Shaw
Audience profile
The gender ratio for target audience is 29% of males over the age of
25 and 28% of females over the age 25, 25% of males under the age
of 25 and 18% of females under the age of 25 and 68% of boys under
the age of 12 and 38% of females under the age of 12. The median
age for the Hobbs and Shaw target audience is 19.
Imaginary entity
Dean is a 16 year old student, who is currently studying film at
college. Dean lives for films and wants to one day become a director.
His favourite genre is action and he loves the fast and furious
franchise, and claims “I love the characters and the connection I feel
with them. Dean and his friends love to make short movies when
they hang out and love to incorporate their skills they have learned
in film studies into their short films.

One reason why a company would have an ideal audience in mind before a product is made is so that they know where to advertise it, for example if they are aiming their product at teenagers they would most likely advertise it on social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat whereas if a company were aiming their product at people aged 40 and above they would most likely advertise it on TV or in the newspaper. Another reason why a company would have an ideal audience in mind before a product is made is to know how to advertise their product, for example kids aged 4-10 would want to see an advert that has a more playful approach and a lot of simple words whereas older teenagers and adults would rather see a more serious advert where they can be informed of all the information about the product and would also understand more complex words in the advert. One method a company might use to research their target audience would be to look at other products made by companies that are targeting the same audience and see what the audience enjoy about that product and see if there is any way to incorporate the ideas into their product. This could also help them to know what the target audience are interested in these days which could help them come up with an idea for a product.
