Romulus and Remus were twin brothers whose mother was Rhea Silvia and father was the god Mars. Their grandfather Amulius feared they would overthrow him, so he ordered them killed as infants. They were instead placed in a basket on the Tiber River and rescued by a wolf that nursed them. A shepherd named Faustulus discovered and raised them. As adults, Romulus killed Remus and went on to found the city of Rome, naming it after himself.
