3. HIGH OBESITY RATE
• 35.7% of adults are classified as obese.
* Adults 20 and over
• 18% of children are classified as obese.
4. CAUSES OF INCREASING
OBESITY RATES
• Increase consumption of high caloric foods and
sugary drinks.
- “On a typical day, 80% of youth drink sugary drinks.”
• Lack of daily physical activity.
5. SUGAR AND FAT STORAGE
1. Sugar enters the body (typically as polysaccharides) and is
broken into smaller pieces (glucose). Then either burned in cells
to produce ATP or stored in the liver.
2. Once the liver reaches its storage capacity (small capacity), the
liver begins converting glucose into fatty acids. Then moves the
fatty acids out of the blood stream and stores it as adipose
tissue.
7. FRUCTOSE CONSUMPTION
INCREASES LIPOGENESIS
• Research from the University ofTexas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) shows that the
body turns fructose into fat more efficiently than it does other sugars.
• Began trials where three people would consume a drink containing either 100% glucose, half
glucose and half fructose, and in the third, the drink was 25% glucose and 75% fructose.
-They found that lipogenesis -- the process by which sugars are turned to body fat --
increased significantly when the breakfast drinks contained fructose.
