2. Fashion photography
What is Fashion Photography?
Fashion photography is a type of photography based on displaying clothing and other fashion item’s. Fashion
photography is most often used for advertisement or fashion magazines such as vogue. Fashion photography
has existed since the earliest days of photography in 1856.
Where we see these images:
Magazines
Billboards
Newspapers
Models
Online/ social media
Fashion photography sells clothing and
accessories, you will see fashion
photography every where in society today it
has a huge impact especially with the
younger generation, it can be advertised in
the wrong way sometimes and teenagers
feel they should be the same size as a
model and look like a model, and because
its everywhere and we consume fashion
advertisement so much a lot of people think
it’s the norm to look like a size 0 model.
3. These two photos show the
comparison between vogue models
in the 1940’s and today. In the
1940’s vogue model photography
was very formal, the models dressed
very appropriately and safe, they
had most of their skin covered, not
much body was every revealed
they seem to dress
Very conservative
and wear very
plane clothing.
This is a more recent front
page off the magazine
vogue. The model’s in
vogue dress much more
revealing, they have skin
on show and for
example this model has
her tummy out and short
shorts on in 1940s you
wouldn’t see any skin
apart from if it was from
the knee down. They
also look much more
daring with the type off
clothes they wear it
comes across quite
adventurous.
◦ With the increased difficulty in
fashion and styling also comes an
increased complexity in lighting to
make the image look more
dramatic and look more eye
catching. While many
commercial photographers only
stick with one light for the model,
fashion photographers tend to
use a variety of lights and lighting
accessories to create the look
they wish.
◦ During a fashion shoot some
photographers use serval lights to
intensify the effect of the
potential photograph, in
photography there is an hour that
is known as the golden hour it is
said to be the best hour of the
day for lighting just after the sun
sets or shortly after the sunrises.
4. David bailey
◦ David Bailey changed photography massively in the 1960s.
◦ Bailey began the 1960s with a contract with Vogue to become the decade's
iconic chronicler with two portrait publications David Bailey's.
◦ They focused on a new social order that evolved from the decade of change.
Bailey was a leading figure in the Swinging Sixties London scene and provided
some of the inspirational model photos we have today.
◦ He used dramatic lighting effects and transformed British fashion and celebrity
photography. His work reflects the 1960s British cultural trend of breaking down
rigid class barriers by injecting a 'punk' look into both clothing and artistic
products.
◦ The photographer with the longest history of Vogue magazine saw his role as
‘selling dreams not clothes’
◦ I believe David Bailey changed fashion photography it use to be conservative
and plane clothing with hardly any skin showing and his work was completely
different and used unusual clothing and make up.
Fashion
photography
today is very out
going and
adventurous
most clothing is
usually over the
top and so is the
make up.
5. Landscape
Typical landscape photography has no people in it and
is just a vast area off land and nature.
The objective for landscape photography is usually to
recall on a observation or experience while in the
outdoors for example when your travelling.
Landscape photography is one of the oldest forms off
photography, it shows spaces in the world sometimes vast
and to capture nature. But also can be focused on a man
made feature of disturbance on landscapes, this is originally
what the social media platform Instagram was invented for
sharing photography mainly landscape photography.
Many landscape photographers take pictures of nature in a
way off appreciation because of its beauty some
photographers wish to keep it preserved and this is why
they take a photo. Many landscape photography shows little
human activity or none at all to keep it pure and natural.
6. Ansel Adams was an American photographer and environmentalist his photos were all black and white but still
look very effective and they are off the American west.
His quotes were ‘you don’t take a photo you make it’ ‘there are always two people in every picture: the
photographer and the viewer’
Mark Gray;
Mark is a self taught photographer from Australia , well known for panoramic photographs off Australian and international
landscapes. Best know pieces he’s done is ‘craig’s hunt’ and ‘reef dreaming’, I love how clear and crisp all the colours look
and how all off his phots go long ways.
Galen Rowell
Galen was a wilderness photographer and climber.
From 1868 on he used 35mm Nikon cameras and lenses for there reliability and portability his main
media choice was colour slide film, starting with Kodachrome in the 1970s and 1980s and Fuji
Velvia following in 1990.
7. Landscape photography tips and
information
Commonly landscape photography includes daylight and natural features off land sky and waters, it is also common to
see a photo with the scene reflected on the lake.
Landscape doesn’t really need much equipment but more modern Equipment can open more opportunities for more art to
be created.
Normally landscape photography doesn’t use any artificial lighting because landscape photography is based on the
natural beauty of the landscape, usually the lighting used is the natural ambient light.
Sometimes you will have to use artificial light if it is needed for example a simple flash
Generally landscape photography is naturally occurring scenery typically ranging from a dozen feet, to a dozen meters,
to a dozen miles, in breadth.
The most preferred lens is a wide angle lens usually used for wide open spaces which you get with landscape
photography.
The magic hour is also important in landscape photography because the lighting makes the picture, for example
photographers would ether shoot in the morning when the sun rises or in the evening when the sun sets.
Some landscape photographers divide there frame into three for composition but don’t be afraid or annoyed if it doesn't’t
work because experimenting may create some different and individual photos
8. Portrait photography
Portrait photography is a picture of one
person or a group off people that show
and expression or a mood usually the
expression on their face is the main
subject of the picture and is the main
focus, portraits can also show the persons
personality.
For example this self portrait looks very
mysterious and quite moody which was the
look the photographer was obviously going
for, a typical portrait is usually of just one
person from waist upwards but self portraits
can involve more then one person and the
whole body.
The portraits are usually artificial lighting
and done in a studio especially when your
modeling and in fashion but many have
been done by natural lighting and outside.
Where would you see portrait
photography?
• Magazines
• Social media
• Newspapers
• Art gallery's
9. Portrait photography
Many portrait photos are taken eyelevel.
Using a longer lens is usually recommended by many
photographers for example a 50mm is seen as a must have.
There's a technique called the three point lighting and it is one of
the many basic lighting plans.
Different types off lighting: the main light this light is usually
placed one side off the subjects face usually a bit higher then
eye level and between 30 and 60 degrees off center the purpose
of this light is to give shape, secondly there's the fill in light it is
used to control the contrast in the shot and is mostly always
placed above the lens axis , the accent light accentuates the
subject there can be many off these in one shot, accessory lights
can be used to add to lighting plans to add highlight or definition.
Portrait photography is used at weddings, fashion, modelling,
and the new craze are selfies these are trending the social media
and are the most modern version of portraits.
I really like how
individual this portrait
is, its simple but its still
effective, the definition
on her bones and
where the highlight is
gives off quite an
mysterious look. This
would be done with
artificial lighting to bring
out the parts you want
to define and highlight.
This photo
would also be
done in a
studio with
artificial
lighting. This
connects with
fashion
photography
because it’s a
fashion
portrait you
can tell by the
make up.
10. Selfies
The most recent and most popular form off portrait photography is the selfie.
There are many benefits to a selfie, first off all its free. You can take it anytime you
want, you can take them any place and any where for example if your in an unusual
place a photographer cant be the selfie will help you capture that moment still. you
can have as many people as you like in it and you can wear and do whatever you
want to in the shot.
Selfies are trending on social media its become the fashion to take a selfie and post
it on Instagram , usually people try to portray the life they want there followers or
friends to see in the selfie and it’s a way of creating photographic evidence that they
are having fun and even sometimes selfies can be taken to save memories it’s an
easy way to take a picture without asking any one else to take it for you.
There are two types off selfies the front camera ones and the ones you take in the
mirror with the back camera, the lighting is nothing professional its ether outdoor
lighting or the lighting from your own home. I personally think its also trended
because its so easy to take a photo on your smart phone and the younger generation
were brought up around technology so they have all been drawn to this new phase of
taking your own portraits.
Many celebrities also take selfies to promote or sell something there wearing for
example there make up or to just inform there fans off what they are doing.
11. Event photography
Event photography is photography of activities and events such as wedding photography.
Event photography is one off the
most popular forms of photography
almost every one has a
photographer at there wedding.
The most common event photography
are;
• Weddings
• Birthdays
• Prom
• Business events
• Night clubs
• Festivals
Event photography is a big
responsibility because you
only have one go at
capturing the right photo,
especially because event
photography isn't done in
a studio like fashion
photography usually is
event photography is more
natural.
