The document discusses different types of photography including documentary, portrait, nature, landscape, and advertising photography. It provides examples and descriptions of each type. For documentary photography, it notes that the goal is to show something truthfully and objectively, as seen in photos taken by photojournalists. Portrait photography aims to express emotion and personality through faces. Nature photography focuses on animals and plants. Landscape photography shows natural beauty. 2. DOCUMENTARY.
Documentary photography is normally referred to an image that was taken to
show something. Normally accompanying a news story, or article, it will give
an insight into how serious, strange, funny or real something is. For example,
photo-journalists will go to Syria or Iraq to get pictures of people and what it’s
like to live over there – it is supposed to be truthful and objective.
Documentary photography has changed over the years as new technology
has been produced. Before these small, swift, compact cameras were
around, the cameras were large, heavy and bulky; this made for very staged
shots as the people would be looking at the camera – not like the candid one
a photo-journalist wants. In the 1880s, there was an outrage from the public
as the new Kodak camera was brought out and they were being
photographed without giving consent.
I think this image is a good example of documentary
photography as it shows an image of poverty and how
people live in what seems to be another country. It is not
staged and it’s objective. It looks like it was used in a news
story or just to be a powerful image.
3. PORTRAIT.
Portrait photographs are normally pictures of a single person, occasionally they
will be a group of people. They are used to express the person’s emotion,
personality, expression and their overall likeliness. Almost all portrait photos
are the person’s face as that’s what delivers all these things – although the
person’s body and the background could be used to express something
(although unlikely).
I like this image (right) to show portrait
photography as it’s multiple people and
it shows half of each person’s face very
cleverly which could mean different
things to different people.
The image that I took (left) is a good image for portrait as
it’s very genuine and the look on the man’s face is very
vacant which shows a lot of emotion. It’s not staged
which makes it better.
The composition in this photo isn’t very
good in my opinion, however – there is
too much free home and his head/face
only takes up about twenty percent of
the photo.
4. NATURE.
Nature photography is a photograph of anything outside, anything natural. It
could be anything from animals to flowers. Most of the modern photos are
very close up shots of things as new technology is made the detail and zoom
length is increased so wildlife photographers can get nicer shots. They are
often used in nature magazines or geography magazines like The National
Geographic has a lot of nature photography.
You wouldn’t see that much nature photography in newspaper, local or regional,
as there is not many stories that require the use of any kind of nature in the
story, unless it would be for a special occasion.
The image I took on the left is good in my opinion as it’s a colourful
Bunch of flowers which is wildlife. Also, I took the photo at an angle th

it’s natural with perhaps some
editing on the outside.
5. LANDSCAPE.
Landscape photography is a way of showing the space in the world, it focuses
heavily on nature although some photographers, like Ansel Adams, focus
heavily on disturbances or man made structures. Pictures like this are often
used in nature magazines, their objective is to just look good. There isn’t any
meaning really – just to show pure, natural beauty. Technology has changed
landscape photography quite a lot, arguably in a good way. Before
technology, photos were taken by bulky, heavy cameras and printed out and
finally admired – no editing of any kind. Now, when a photo is taken, it’s taken
straight to a computer and edited to make it look even more beautiful. Some
say this is ‘controversial’ as it’s meant to be nature, but some admire the idea
to make it look nicer to look at.
I like this photo as it’s very attractive due to
The use of the sunset in the background.
I also admire the angle it was taken at to giv

6. ADVERTISING.
Advertisement photography is used to show off a product or show what it
can do. It’s often main focus is to show the product and to make it look
good. Advertising Photography is the most competitive form of
photography, due to the fact that photographers can earn a lot more
money in this aspect of photographer. The photographers have a very
hard job as they have to make a masterpiece from something as simple
as a chocolate bar.
