2. Analyze the Learner
• I will be teaching this lesson plan to a 5th grade class of 10 boys
and 8 girls, 2 out of the 18 are African American and they are
both boys, the rest are Caucasian. They are all middle class and
it is a public school.
3. Main Objective
Students will be able to describe the slave history in America and
they will also develop the emotion that was felt during that era
through the reading of books about historical slave
figures, comparing and contrasting between their lives today and
a slaves life, watching a video about slave life on
plantation, reading excerpts from a slave diary, and listening to
slave songs; at the end of five days, 100% of students will be able
to name a historic slave figure, and describe an important aspect
of slave history.

• 1- Background of Slavery, reading of “Henry’s Freedom Box”
• 2- Historic Slave Figures (Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner)
• 3- Underground Railroad, reading of “Sweet Clara and the
Freedom Quilt”
• 4- Plantation life, field slaves (video)
• 5- Emancipation, Freedom from Slavery
