In this landscape etching, The Three Trees, Rembrandt portrays all the Dutch landscape elements– the flat reclaimed farmland, the dike and dale, the
canal, the cityscape, and the unpredictable weather. He adopted an elevated viewpoint with a low horizon, allowing him to devote the majority of the
canvas to the sky, which is unusual among Rembrandt's landscape etchings. In the foreground, three trees stand on top of a dike by the canal, which are
the main focuses on the etching. The turbulence ruffles their foliage. On the lower left corner, we can see a couple sitting near the water. The man is
fishing using a fishing pole and the woman is sitting on the bush while holding a basket. On top of the dike, there are a cart with travelers in silhouette
and a draughtsman looking towards the right, who might refer to Rembrandt himself since he was also capturing the landscape. In the background, the
etching captures the cottages in the middle of neat farmland, the cowherds with their cattle, and the skyline of Amsterdam with the characteristic

When David Bligh joined Dexter Southfield last September he brought the love of art, teaching, and experimentation with him. Bligh teaches upper
school art with a focus on printmaking. He has shown work in numerous exhibitions, including UNC's Crossover and Composites: Hybrid Forms,
Techniques & Media, The Color of Thin Air at Sculpture Fix Gallery–Two by Two: Small Scale Ceramic Sculpture Biennial at Eastern Washington
State and The Future at Scuola Internationale di Grafica in Venice, Italy.

printed a dress pattern on her book using the press (show picture). Giampaolo Nicosia '19 also utilized the press to put text on his book. The project
was a great opportunity for students to begin experimenting with the press and to become more comfortable thinking outside the box and including
more creativity in their works.
"Having a working knowledge of the printing press allows our students to access a tool that is rarely seen at the high school level," said Bligh. "By
having a printing press our students can experiment with many exciting processes that yield results quickly."
Bligh noted that some challenges students may face when learning how to operate the press is the mere fact that he lets them learn the process on their
own.
Bligh commented on the level of creativity students have reached when utilizing the press this past year. "I have seen students use it to quickly
transfer text or pattern to a work of art," he said. "The students also used it to emboss or add pressure as well as experiment with

Honore Daumier Research Paper
Honore Daumier was a French artist most famously known for his caricatures and lithographs. While he was highly credited with these artworks, he
was a man of many mediums, studying in these as well as painting, printmaking and sculpting. He had a strong passion for the arts from an early age,
as many of the greats did, and it was sharpened into what we know now as the great works of Honore Daumier. He was born in Marseille, France,
living with his father Jean–Baptiste Louise Daumier and Cecile Cathrine Philippe in 1808. His father was a glazier, but his profession was not earning
his family enough to live on. The practice was dying, and he left to Paris in 1814 to pursue his artistic inclinations as a poet. He worked to become

His father did not push Daumier in the direction of art to begin with, even with his own literary interest. Instead, Daumier worked in a bailiffs office
and book stores, which eventually lead to some of his drawings later in life. While working in a book shop in 1812, Daumier made some of his
earliest drawings. It wasn't until 1822 that his family allowed him to study the arts. They let him work under Alexander Lenoir, an artist and architect,
that introduced him to some of the classic sculptors and artists like Titian and Rubens. He was pushed in a healthy direction by Lenoir, and soon
began formal study at the Academie Suisse. Under the reign of King Louis Philippe (1830–1848), Daumier created some of his most iconic caricatures.

Albrecht Durer was a German known for his engravings and painting throughout Europe. He lived from 1471–1528 and during that time made a great

The artist first coats the metal plate in an acid–resistant substance known as ground and is drawn on. The artist then uses a sharp tool or etching
needle down to the plate. "Hard grounds are employed for finely detailed linear work. Soft ground can also be used, and virtually any tool can be
used to expose the plate and resembles crayon and pencil drawings" (Sayre, 2012). Whichever ground is used by the artist is then placed in an acid
bath. "The acid eats, or etches, into the plate where the lines have been drawn; the longer the exposed plate is left in the bath, and the stronger the

This woodcut series portrays scenes from the book of Revelation in the bible, concerning the end of the world. It was created at a time when Europe
anticipated the "Last Judgement", as Germany was experiencing plagues, religious debates, and peasant movements towards the end of the 15th

This is due to the use of a tool, a burin, to create extremely thin and subtle lines in an engraving. The medium used for an engraving is metal and is
created using an intaglio method. Unlike the relief process of printmaking, this process is a positive one. The artist scratches the image onto the metal
plate, inks the surface of it, and wipes it clean. As a result, ink is placed into the carved out drawing. Next, the plate is run through a roller press
which causes the ink to absorb to the paper. The difference in appearance between a relief print and an intaglio print is because of essentially drawing
the image to be created onto the metal plate for an intaglio print. Also cross–hatching, the use of fine parallel lines to create the illusion of shade,
allowed for more subtle shading in the engraving. This engraving portrays the melancholy personality of artists and Durer, himself. It is suggested

stance represents an artistic genius who is looking for inspiration, but cannot find it, therefore experiences despair in her/himself. The winged child
sitting to the left of the winged female, represents anxiety that the uninspired artist could be experiencing. In addition, in the upper left corner, a bat
is found with the words "melencholia" beside it. The bat represents melancholy because it only appears or comes out at night and is linked with the
darkness. Durer contrasts melancholy and the light of inspiration by associating this bat in the dark sky with rays of light. Essentially, because of the

Art makes a statement, it is as simple as that. The most preferred type of art emotes happiness to the viewer throughout all of history. Yet, throughout
the years, artists have come to challenge society's preference of art. Artists like Gustave Courbet, Francisco Goya, and Ai Weiwei, who decided to take
the challenge and start a new progression. Social critique through art is blatantly shown throughout each of their pieces: Stonebreakers, The Third of
May 1808, and Sunflower Seeds. All three are similar yet different. Through comparison, a similar theme still remains present: Each artist 's social
critique through their artwork. These particular types of artwork will show how one moment in history changed the view of millions throughout
centuries of time. With the use of symbolism, positioning of figures, historical context, color usage, and many other elements, these three works of art
make an inspiring statement to the world.
The first painting, Stone Breakers by Gustave Courbet depicts two males that go to work breaking stone and wearing torn and tattered clothing. This
job was usually done by the lower classes of society. At this time in France there was a rising of revolutionary thinking. The reason for the sudden
outbreak involved many factors, the ones portrayed in this painting are the demands of the working classes. The figures are not arranged in the typical

David Milne was a painter, printmaker, and writer, who captured the essence of Canadian art. Milne showed a pure aesthetic approach to his work
that was dependant of his specific formula. Essentially Milne sought to reduce a painting to the basic form. David Milne was born on January 8,
1882, in a southern Ontario village named Burgoyne. David was the last of ten children to his Scottish immigrant parents. David Milne was born to be
an artist, he began drawing even before starting kindergarten, and ironically enough the only subject he had ever failed in elementary school was
drawing. Although Milne spent most of his artists' career in the United States and received much adulation in New York, in Canada he was well known
as a Canadian nationalist and monarchist. In his practices David used predominately oil paint, water color and drypoint printmaking. Milne's work was
similar in context and location compared to the Group of Seven, he primarily choose landscape as an image of interest. Unlike the Group of Seven,
David approached his paintings with a more modern feel and developed his own particular style that was beautiful and simple. His landscapes and
still images portrayed a sense of touch and feel. While the subject of Milne's choice was from the visible world, streets, people and landscapes he
portrayed a modernist style that he had learned in New York. Milne formally believed that the elements such as line, color, shape, and composition were

The Relief and Intaglio Printmaking Process

The Relief Printmaking process is a printmaking process in which someone covers a block of material, such as wood, in ink. Then they proceed to
deeply etch out the inked surface in the form of a design. Once that is done, they lay paper over the block with pressure so that the ink is shared
generously all over the paper. When the paper is removed, the design will have been transferred and they will have the finished artwork. Using a
block of wood is known as Woodcut Relief Printmaking, or "Woodcuts". There are also Wood Engravings, where a stronger type of wood is used so
an artist can engrave an image into the surface rather than cut it out. In my opinion, the second step of the process could be left to remain as the art
itself. In the video showing the process as Lyell Castonguay created his piece, "Hydra", I thought the design in the ink coated wood looked more
bold and real than the actually piece. But this may only be for the reason that the finished product lacked color in comparison. Of course, Lyell isn't
the only artist who uses this printmaking process. Another artist who uses Relief Printmaking is Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai used the same process
to create his color woodcut piece called "South Wind, Clear Sky", a portrayal of Mount Fuji. Describe the Intaglio Printmaking process. List an artist

result of the popularization of graffiti, starting with dissemination of its works in New York City in the early 1980s (346). Since then, graffiti artists
have both been banned and cherished, deprived of their work and allowed in art galleries. Thus, another question has been raised: Should graffiti be

For my museum trip I chose to visit the Leepa–Rattner museum in Tarpon Springs. I have never been to an art museum before so I wasn't quite sure
what to expect. With that being said, I must admit I really found enjoyment from the distinctive emphasis that artists put within many of these images.
Furthermore, it is truly amazing how you can gaze at a work of art and begin to establish an idea of the narrative being told within the image. The
Leepa–Rattner museum is not very large, and it did not take very long to view everything that was on display. But to a great degree, I was fascinated
with the workmanship and focus of many of the paintings. The museum was very beautiful, and the architecture was very well done as well. The
building presents an image of a ship at sea. Additionally, I really valued the size of the museum, which is not huge, yet rather more personal and
relaxed. I found a few of the works strong and persuasive, and the more diminutive size keeps things in perspective.
The first painting that really drew my attention was the full sized image by Picasso called Guernica. The proportion and balance of the painting is
astounding. The scene portrayed in Guernica is a room filled with moving, shouting and anguished adults, and creatures. Also, I was told by someone at

Goya's painted a man who is about to be shot, men who have just been shot, and line of men who are about to be shot. Goya makes us see the Spanish
people's faces, and their emotions, to make us have empathy. In the other hand, the solders lined up with their backs toward us leave us with no feeling
for them. Saturn Devouring His Son is another painting by Goya. It was painted from 1819 to 1823. According to the traditional interpretation, it
depicts the Greek myth of the Titan Cronus . Saturn Devouring His Son is one of Goya's darkest paintings. It was painted directly onto the wall of
his house. The painting is about Saturn, the God of time, who was told that one of his sons will dethrone him. In order to prevent that Saturn
devoured his children as they were born, but Jupiter escaped so Saturn in the end was dethroned and couldn't escape. This terrifying story is
depicted in a horrific way in this painting. We can see the horror in Saturn's eyes as he pulls his son's arm into his mouth. He is trying to seek
revenge, and tells us that no one can take away what he has. Also Saturn's facial expression gives us the feeling that Saturn knows that he is not doing

Analysis Of Pop Art Of Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol's 2–D silkscreen print, Sitting Bull, is a very popular and controversial print from his series Cowboys and Indians. The print is
representational, based on an original archival photo of the Sioux Chief, Sitting Bull. In the original photograph and print, the Chief is posing for a
headshot photo, with a calm facial expression and stance. The chief has two long braids to both sides of his head and a feather on his head. In the
print, the artist chose to make the chief's skin light blue, his dress bright red, his hair and braids dark blue, and his shape is outlined in yellow, white
and blue, drawing attention to the subject. As for most of Warhol's Pop style pieces, the photo was redesigned by the artist to be printed in vivid
colors and showcases a lightly colored outline of his body and shape, giving the original photo a modern touch. The artist's work was printed using the
silkscreen printing process on a 36 inch by 36 inch Lenox Museum Board paper (Sitting Bull 376, 2016). Sitting Bull is great representation of the

Exhibition Overview:
Among the many fabulous pieces of art housed at the DMA, there lies a hidden gem that has yet to be on display. The Album of La Revue Blanche, a
collection of prints commissioned by the late 19th century Parisian anarchist journal, provides not only an insight into popular fin–de–siГЁcle French
print culture, but also a beautiful case–study in the techniques developed by leading artists in the realm of fine art lithography. It is the goal of this
exhibit to explore the place of the graphic arts in early modern art through the example of this journal, and to examine more closely the stylistic
hallmarks of the lithograph in a more detailed way.
Lithography: Method
Lithography is planographic printing process that makes use of the immiscibility of grease and water. In the lithographic process, ink is applied to a
grease–treated image on the flat printing surface. Non–image areas hold moisture and repel the lithographic ink. This inked surface is then printed by
means of a special press as in most fine–art printmaking . The earliest–though no longer the only–method of creating lithographs involved the use of a
block of porous limestone. An image is drawn with "tusche"– a carbon pigment in liquid form, and "litho" crayon – a type of grease pencil– before the
printing surface is fixed, moistened, and inked in preparation for printing. The printing itself is done on a press that exerts a sliding pressure, and
