Taking a Look at the Inca Civilizaiton
THE INCA CIVILIZATION
Inca, the word is derived from Inti, the sun god, was one of the largest and oldest Pre–Columbian civilization extending from Ecuador in north to whole
of Chile in south. The region is predominantly known as Andean region and is modern day Peru, with official language being Quechua. They had their
own flag which is a very impressive thing about this civilization because flags gained prominence only in 17th–18th century. Incas were the most
powerful Empire in that region ruling more 12 million people for around 100 years. Incas are believed to be ruling from 1438 A.D– 1532 A.D with
Aristocratic ruling system in the society. Inca Empire was founded by Ayar Manco, popularly known Manco Capac and was known as Sapa Inca
"child of the sun". Incas were firm believer in god worshipping creator god Viracocha, Sun god Inti, Thunder god Illapa and earth–mother goddess
Pachamama. Incas had a very powerful army conquering different parts of Pre–Columbian America using weapons such as axes, bow and arrow,
spears, swords and more importantly Clubs(it was considered as a unique weapon which Incas only used) majorly made up of stone and copper.
They had a very keen sense of clothing and dressed according to their position in the society with noble donning more expensive clothing than the Inca
commoner. As far as shelter is concerned, housed were divided into two types one for commoners and other for Nobles, the latter being highly
decorated and made of stone whereas

What Is Peru?
Peru is a country located in western South America. Peru is home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, to the Inca
Empire. The Spanish Empire conquered Peru in the 16th century and then established a Viceroyalty with their capitol, Lima. After the battle of
Ayacucho, Peru ensured it independence. The country then went into recession and kept military profile until the economic rise. Peru has gone through
a lot of political and economic issues throughout the years.
Peru is a representative democratic republic divided into 25 regions. They also have a high human development index score and their poverty level is at
about 25.8%. Some of their economic activities include mining, manufacturing, agriculture, and fishing. The population is at about 31.2 million in
2015. They have many different types of ethnicities including Amerindians, Europeans, Africans, and Asians. The main language is Spanish. They also
have mixed cultural traditions which have resulted in a wide diversity.
The name of the country came from Biru, which was the name of a local ruler who lived near the Bay of San Miguel, Panama. Another history
provided by the contemporary writer Inca Garcilasco de la Vega is that the name Biru was the name of a common... Show more content on

Most of the rivers originate in the peaks of the Andes and then will drain into the three basins. The rivers that drain towards the Pacific Ocean are
steep and short. Rivers such as the Amazon River have a lot stronger flow. Peru's longest rivers are the Ucayali, the Maranon, the Putumayo, the Yavari,

“the Application of Mathematics in Pre-Columbian...
Since the commencement of human existence, personal qualities such as: the pursuit of knowledge, the desire to expand ones horizons, and the
inclination to establish and follow a dream, has significantly impacted society. From the earliest days, right up until the present time, a number of
accomplishments have filled the vast expanse of time. Such accomplishments span from exemplary literary works, such as those of Cicero, Virgil, and
Goethe; to philosophical breakthroughs of men like Rene Descartes who said, "I think therefore I am", and finally to the unprecedented discoveries in
the fields of mathematics and science. Among all the civilizations of time, those of the Pre–Columbian Era seem to have successfully applied

Theoretically, one could probably say that that even the center of gravity for this kind of triangle could be found by finding the intersection of all
the medians, yet the additional weight of the stairs may slightly throw off such an approach. The rectangular base, being only two dimensional
would therefore have a center of gravity that is at the dead center, if an only if both sets of lengths and both sets of widths are of equal weight. At
this point one can conclude that the center of gravity for the entire pyramid is at the height of the center of gravity for all of the triangles, but
joined at one point directly over the center of gravity for the rectangular base (see figure3). The flummoxing part of this is that the Mayans would
have never been able to figure this out since Calculus and Isaac Newton would not come about for hundreds of years, yet at the same time, the fact
that the pyramids still stand is evidence to their having an excellent center of gravity. The only plausible explanations for this are: for one the
Mayans must have ensured extraordinary stability of their base by making sure that all angles were 90В°, second by making sure that in Rectangle
(base) ABCD, AB was equal in weight to CD, ensuring that AD was equal in weight to BC, and making certain that all the triangles (sides) were
congruent in size and more importantly, weight. (See Figure 4) (Hartog 36). The application of parallel

Early Life In North America
Early life in North America is divided into three eras. The first of North American settlers started to settle the lands fifteen to ten thousand years ago.
These people came from Asia by crossing a now non–existent and bridge that was given the name, Beringia. The settlers came to North America by
following herds of woolly mammoths in order to hunt them for food and use their fur for clothing. These people that were once followed decided to
split up and gather all around North America. These natives were called paleo–Indians. People in the Paleo–Indian era began to form various cultures
and beliefs, and many different methods of surviving. During this time, groups would follow their sources of food wherever they went and gathered

The Mayan Civilization And The Maya Empire
The Mayan civilization or the Maya Empire, centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now Guatemala, reached the peak of its power and influence
around the sixth century A.D. The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar–making and mathematics, and left behind an
astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork. Most of the great stone cities of the Maya were abandoned by A.D. 900. The
Maya civilization was one of the most dominant indigenous societies of Mesoamerica. Unlike other scattered indigenous populations of Mesoamerica,
the Maya were centered in one geographical block covering all of the Yucatan Peninsula and modern–day Guatemala; Belize and parts of the Mexican
states of Tabasco and Chiapas; and the western part of Honduras and El Salvador. This concentration showed that the Maya remained relatively secure
from invasion by other Mesoamerican peoples.
Within that expanse, the Maya lived in three separate sub–areas with distinct environmental and cultural differences: the northern Maya lowlands on
the Yucatan Peninsula; the southern lowlands in the Peten district of northern Guatemala and adjacent portions of Mexico, Belize and western
Honduras; and the southern Maya highlands, in the mountainous region of southern Guatemala. The earliest Maya settlements date to around 1800
B.C., or the beginning of what is called the Preclassic or Formative Period. The Middle Preclassic Period also saw the rise of the first major

Essay on Pre-Columbian civilizations
Long before any white man ever set foot in this hemisphere, there were fully functional and highly developed societies here. These civilizations were
sophisticated, could even be considered more advanced than the European nations at the time. While the rest of the Eastern world was in the dark
Middle Ages, the people here were flourishing.
The Aztecs were the Native American people who dominated northern MГ©xico at the time of the Spanish conquest led by Hernan CORTES in the
early 16th century. According to their own legends, they originated from a place called Aztlan, somewhere in north or northwestMexico. At that time
the Aztecs (who referred to themselves as the Mexica or Tenochca) were a small, nomadic, Nahuatl–speaking aggregation ... Show more content on

The Maya were also a farming society like the Aztecs. They too, worshiped many gods, whom they felt were responsible for their survival. Gods of
rain, wind, and sun were among the ones most worshiped. Mayan leaders went to war to try and capture the ruler of another city. If they did they
would sacrifice the prisoner, again much like the Aztecs (Mexico).
The Mayans created many things to affect the world. They created a 365 day calendar. They also made great strides in mathematics and astronomy.
They used the number zero, which was very advanced for their time period. The astronomers were able to tell what day of the week a date would fall
on in future years (Encarta). And they were able to calculate the length of years of other planets with remarkable precision given the instruments they
had to work with (Mexico).
Contrary to popular belief, the Mayan civilization was not one unified empire, but rather a multitude of separate entities with a common cultural
background. Similar to the Greeks, they were religiously and artistically a nation, but politically sovereign states. As many as twenty such states existed
on the Yucatan Peninsula, but although a woman has, on rare occasions, ascended to the ruling position, she has never acquired the title of 'mah kina'
(one of the highest titles that can be achieved)(Encarta).

European Colonization Of Native Americans
European diseases were responsible for the deaths of more than half of the Incan empire and for the passing of as much as ninety percent of the
natives of coastal New England (Mann, "1491"). Such a reduction of the strength and numbers of American Indian civilization was a considerable
promoting factor in European conquest of and colonization of the Americas. If Native Americans had been capable of exhibiting a more formidable
immunological response to European pathogens, colonization of the Americas would have followed a vastly different path, leading to tremendous
differences in the development of the New World and the Old World and their mutual relationship. If European disease had not affected Native
Americans, the native populations of the New World would have been able to create a much more successful military resistance to foreign invaders.
An utterly decimated Native American population was unable to oppose a superior European force, a force that was not beleaguered by susceptibility
to the very diseases that destroyed Native American populations. Many researchers have tried to estimate the population of pre–Columbian America.
Historian Dr. Henry F. Dobyns has suggested that the native population reached levels as far as 112 million in 1491 before Columbus's arrival. This
number plummeted to less than 6 million by 1650, largely as a result of exposure to wave after wave of European diseases, which proved to be
extremely effective at terrorizing the native population

Intricacies Of The Pre-Columbian Civilizations In 1491 By...
The cultural and societal intricacies of the Pre–Columbian civilizations in the Americas have been remarkably misinterpreted for centuries. In his novel
1491, Charles C Mann challenges the common misconception that these people roamed the Americas without leaving so much as an anthropogenic
footprint prior to the re–colonization by Europeans. He clearly debunks this myth by providing evidence from several different fields, that the
indigenous people interacted directly with the environments they lived in. Mann conclusively argues that these people were misunderstood due to the
complexity of their societies, by showing that native peoples of the Americas sculpted the environments they inhabited.
The civilizations that thrived prior to the arrival of the Europeans, employed many complex agricultural methods that benefited organisms within their
ecosystems, in addition to erecting magnificent metropolises. The most common agricultural methods included "slash and char" in densely forested
regions, terracing on steep hillsides and milpas–small plots–found in lower wetlands. "Slash and char" a term dubbed by Christopher Steiner–a soil
scientist from the University of Bayreuth– created "terra preta" a very nutrient rich soil that increases the fertility of the land and provides habitats for
a diverse variety of microorganisms (Mann 345–346). Other features like the "forested islands" in the Beni (Mann 344), and the "fallows" in the
Amazon (Mann 286) were anthropogenic creations mistaken for geological landforms due to lack of examination of the degrading man–made ceramics
in the mounds, which indicate they were produced by an advanced civilization. Although Milpa's and terracing were managed differently than the
regions where terra preta transformed infertile areas into old–growth orchards called "fallows," all three methods fortified the soil quality and
manipulated crops to amplify productivity in order to support major populations. Without large–scale agricultural systems, a massive society could not
have existed. Another key line of evidence supporting this idea, that Indians sculpted their own environment, is perhaps the most visible. Pyramids and
plazas akin to ones in Teotihuacan and Huaricanga would not exist

The United States History During The World History
It's very interesting to me when studying America history in the United States. When I lived in Viet Nam, I studied American history in the World
History Program in high school. However, this program only focused on the history of America in the 20th century such as the Second Industrial
Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. We studied very in detail about the Cold War because this event related to Viet Nam war. The
Cold War was no large–scale fighting directly between the United States and Soviet Union. They are different in economy and politics which are
communist and capitalist.
When taking History 1301 course, I am really interested when I have an opportunity to exam American history from pre–Columbian to Civil War. I
knew that the 13 colonies created a war to gain freedom from the Great Britain. However, I do not know the reasons why they had to left England
to come to the New World, the United States. Now after reviewing Unit 1, I know they had to leave their own country to come to the United Sates
for god, gold, and government. For example, The Pilgrims, who established Plymouth colony, fled to Holland in 1607to come to the New World to
look for a freedom in religion in the New World. Moreover, the origin of the first people who came to the Americas is from Asia is a new idea to me.
Based on the evidence of archeologists found in 1927, they concluded that the first known natives from North Asia came to the America through a
frozen patch of land known as

Why US History Began Essay
The 14th and 15th centuries were a period of great change which caused many vital aspects of American history to be lost, however, through science,
archaeology, and other techniques, historians have been able to make new discoveries about the Americas detailed in 1491 by Charles C. Mann. These
revelations beg the question: When should U.S. History officially begin? While the U.S. was not founded until after 1492, U.S. history should start
before 1492 because Native Americans have had lasting impacts on parts of nature which could give insight into important scientific questions, and
more education of the pre–Columbian era combats the ethnocentric idea that Native Americans were largely savages and not as civilized as other
ancient societies. Finally, we need to include this aspect of human history because it gives us... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Haudenosaunee lived in balance with nature that they imposed, while Europeans lived in competition with nature, attempting to control it fully.
This vastly different method of farming is an important part of American history as it is the reason for the famous Great Plains. It also gives insight
into the nature of the Native Americans and their livelihoods. The mound building engineers who built Cahokia's Monks Mound show us that even
though the Indians lived centuries ago, they were just as able as other ancient civilizations and even modern ones. The monks mound was built on clay
which is prone to swelling and by insulating and watering the mound, it still exists today (Mann 260). Just as the Ancient Egyptians are studied for their
pyramids, the Cahokians should be studied as part of Ancient U.S. History demonstrating their engineering ability. Finally, an achievement of Native
Americans that makes them worthy of inclusion in U.S. History is the invention of terra preta, an unusually fertile soil found in Amazonia that is
anthropogenic. Indians likely used the technique, slash–and–char to create charcoal

Dr. Mathews' lecture focused on explaining the archeological discoveries of ancient Mexican cultures, but she left us pondering the reason for ancient
Mexican art not being seen as part of ancient art by modern culture. It is common when thinking of ancient civilizations to think of the Greeks, the
Egyptians, the Romans, and a long list before the Pre–Columbian civilizations. One theory that comes to mind is the fact that the European and
Mediterranean art did not have to be discovered. Brilliant works of art such as the Aphrodite of Knidos and other ancient European works of art did not

The Maya Socialization, A Mesoamerican Civilization
The Maya civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization developed by the Maya peoples, and noted for its hieroglyphic script–the only known fully
developed writing system of the pre–Columbian Americas–as well as for its art, architecture, mathematics, calendar, and astronomical system. The
Maya civilization developed in an area that encompasses southeastern Mexico, all of Guatemala and Belize, and the western portions of Honduras and
El Salvador. This region consists of the northern lowlands encompassing the YucatГ
Ўn Peninsula, and the highlands of the Sierra Madre, running from
the Mexican state of Chiapas, across southern Guatemala and onwards into El Salvador, and the southern lowlands of the Pacific littoral plain. The
Archaic period, prior to 2000 BC, saw the first developments in agriculture and the earliest villages. The Preclassic period (c. 2000 BC to 250 AD)
saw the establishment of the first complex societies in the Maya region, and the cultivation of the staple crops of the Maya diet, including maize,
beans, squashes, and chili peppers. The first Maya cities developed around 750 BC, and by 500 BC these cities possessed monumental architecture,
including large temples with elaborate stucco façades. Hieroglyphic writing was being used in the Maya region by the 3rd century BC. In the Late
Preclassic a number of large cities developed in the PetГ©n Basin, and Kaminaljuyu rose to prominence in the Guatemalan Highlands. Beginning

lived in North America. Cahokia is one of more than 900 world heritage sites. Funding these properties cost a small fortune and some people think it

When we study old cultures we learn how people adapt to their environment and cope with natural disasters. We learn how patterns of immigration
affect languages and why civilizations thrive or die out. Studying the remints of culture, help us understand how people lived long ago, and helps us

Food Culture of Mexican Mayans
Southeast Mexico was inhabited by the Mayan Indians many years ago, and their basic eating habits were based on the fact that they were primarily
nomadic hunters by nature. As a result, they lived off the land and regularly consumed animals that roamed those lands in that time. Mexican culture
food at the time simply consisted of the meat of rabbits, deer, raccoons and armadillos. Birds were considered a delicacy and pigeons, turkeys and
quail were regularly eaten. This often included frogs, snakes and turtles.
These meat delicacies were perfectly complemented by land grown vegetables like tropical fruits, beans and corn. Corn was a basic supplement of
almost all meals, as it was widely grown in all the settlements of the Mayans, becoming an integral part of the Mayan culture. Mexican food and culture
of this time aimed at complete nutrition and nourishment of the body by providing it with all the necessary minerals and amino acids.

Effects Of The Aztecs During The Conquistadors
Mexico was one of the main points of the conquistadors' conquest. Mexico was home to two of the biggest Pre–Colombian civilizations, the Aztecs
and the Mayans. The Mayans and Aztecs both faced the wrath of the conquistadors, as they were both conquered very easily due to the Spanish's
advanced weaponry. After conquering the natives, the Spanish would rule over that land for anout 300 years. This new ruling came with new foods,
races, animals, and changes that effected the natives.
One of things that was brought to Mexico during the Colombian Exchange, although unintentonally, was disease. The Spanish brought diseases such as
smallpox, measles, tuberculosis, and mumps. These were diseases that the natives had not been exposed to, so they had no immunity to them. Even
though the Spanish did have much more advanced weaponry than the natives, it was the diseases that wiped out most of the native population. It is
believed that within a century of the arrival of the Spanish, the population of the Aztecs decreased by 80–95%, going from 12.5M to roughly about
1.5M in population (History of Disease). The Spanish shared the same fate, but not as severe, many died from syphillis. A disease that was much more
dangerous during that time than it is today. (Columbian Exchange)
The second thing brought over from Spain was animals. The most influential animal that was brought to Mexico by the Spanish was the horse, which

The Gods Of Mexico Summary
The Gods of Mexico by C. A. Burland is a historical analysis of the religion of ancient Mexico that provides an alternate informative viewpoint on
the overall history of the Mexican civilization. Burland provides a concise history of the Mexican people groups in the first few chapters, beginning
from the earliest peoples of more than 20,000 years ago to the rise of the Aztecs in the 1300s. The Mayans are briefly mentioned to illustrate the
important background of primary social system common to the whole of Meso–America: communities were established for worship rather than for
secular life. The Aztecs were the main focus of the dissection of the Mexican religious culture, as Burland expounded upon the ancient gods and the
various individuals of spiritual importance in their community. These individuals covered a vast range of classes, such as the emperor, who was seen
as a mediator between heaven and earth, the medicine women, who could see and interpret visions, and the temple worshippers who were trained from
infanthood. Festivals, calendrical system, astronomy, medicine, and the organization of the state were all closely tied to the worship of the gods. Later

History And Development Of Mesoamerica
Steven Hermosillo Professor Duran History 101 23 May 2016 The History and Development of Mesoamerica According to Module 4, "America's
Pre–Columbian populations evolved into highly developed communities which by the time of the European invasion and conquest in the 16th century
had engendered some of the world's most highly evolved civilizations, in both North and South America." Module 4 states that "Shortly after Columbus
arrived in the Caribbean in 1492–1493, other Europeans made their way to various parts of America, but in the process they unwittingly brought
Eurasian disease pathogens to which America's Pre–Columbian population were not immune or ready. Thus, even before the actual invasions and
conquests began, much of the Pre–Columbian population had already been physically and numerically decimated, which further aggravated the
problem of dearth of Native historical records, since many Pre–Columbian American societies passed their histories down orally and through their
rituals." Columbus brought disease to America's Pre–Columbian population that were not immune or ready. "In this vein, these pre–conquest
decimations also gave the misleading impression to most Europeans that the American continent was a sparely populated wilderness peopled by
societies with underdeveloped cultures. This stereotype image, however, was consonant with the invading European cultures' own racist, Eurocentric
depreciation of Pre–Columbian Americans' civilizational accomplishments – the

between food and historical events that have heavily influenced people with both positive and negative aspects. Over the course of history, food and its

In both Chapter 7 and Chapter 10 the novel, sugar is emphasized as being a necessity to revolutionizing global trade as well as a tactic to utilize the
labor–intensive manpower of slaves. Even with its discovery in the late 1400s by Christopher Columbus when he arrived in the Caribbean, sugar,
the crop that Columbus "took westward, was a curse" because of all effort needed to produce the crop (113). Sugar rationalized slavery in the Old
world because of the product's trade value and the triangles that were developed involving products being shipped from the Americas, finished
products from Europe being shipped to Africa in order to buy slaves. The cycle continued for years to establish the event that is now known
historically as the slave trade, another major event in history that was based around food. Centuries of experiences were need to advise people and
help them realize that there is no justification for slavery, so British citizens began to boycott and fight slavery during the 1790s. In order to win the

New Revelation Of The Americas Before Columbus Chapter...
In the book 1491 "New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus" by American author and science writer Charles C. Mann about the
pre–Columbian Americas. Consists of a groundbreaking study that radically alters our understanding of the Americas before the arrival of the
Europeans in 1492. The book presents recent research findings in different fields that suggest human populations in the Western Hemisphere were
more numerous, had arrived earlier, were more sophisticated culturally, and controlled and shaped the natural landscape to a greater extent than
scholars had previously thought. The book itself is a very readable account of the history of the American people before the lands were 'discovered'
by Europeans in 1492 and gives a lot to think about as you are reading it. In the book Mann reveals how a new generation of researchers equipped
with novel scientific techniques came up with new unheard set of conclusions never heard before. The book does a great job explaining everything
with great details but it also raises many questions.
What he is most interested in showing us the readers and what I believe his thesis is in how American Indians like all other humans' beings– were
intensely involved in shaping the world they lived in. Mann's purpose with this book is to discuss three commonly held ideas about the Americas
before Columbus: One is that the population of Indians was larger than what it was earlier believed and how also the continent was populated before and

Commonalities in Religions
The pre–Columbian religions found outside of Eurasia were wildly diverse, but they nearly always emphasized a few basic beliefs. Perhaps this was
because they stemmed from a similar progenitor religion in the distant past, perhaps they picked up on some basic part of the human psyche. While
there were many differences in the intricacies of the religions of Polynesia, the Andes, and Mesoamerica, they all shared a polytheistic faith, a belief
that gods are derived from nature, and a belief that sacrifice was needed to maintain the natural order of the world. In polynesia, the dominant
pre–columbian religion was animism–the belief that all things have some sort of spiritual power. In Polynesia, this power was called mana
(Encyclopedia Britannica). Polynesians believed that this spiritual power, this mana, could be negated by human actions. As a result of this, many tapu
(brought into English as taboo) were set up in order to prevent humans from upsetting the natural order of the world. As with their neighbors in
Mesoamerica, the polynesians believed in a form of human sacrifice to right the unbalance in the mana of a person or a thing. This was especially
clear when someone walked over the shadow of a chief or a noble. It was thought that this would damage the mana of the person and only the death of
the offender would correct this unbalance. Like most cultures, the Polynesians had many gods which would personify some part of nature and who
would be deeply

Character Analysis Of Mayan Civilization
"Mayan Civilization" The film "Apocalypto" takes place in a certain period of the pre–Columbian era where we are presented young hunters from a
village. Their rituals, the way of hunting, the cohesion between them, and especially, the bonds of friendship and family. The director makes us
acquire sympathy for the hunters, giving a calm and familiar aspect to the characters. As for the social aspect, the film is essentially emphasized in the
figure of man in these societies; being brave, warrior, were characteristics valued by the Amerindians. The film addresses these characteristics through
the subject virility of one of the characters; for not having children, the married man is mocked by everyone in the village, including his... Show more

left him destined to lead to destruction, which in the end materializes with the arrival of the Spaniards. Then, as only a filmmaker could represent, the
"villains" emerge. Men more prepared for combat, cruel and agile hunters, armed, and still graced with the surprise factor. These invaders come as only
death could get: cold, quick and calculating, without sparing their victims. Led by a violent warrior, they manage to subdue the whole village, with the

Maya civilization, one of the greatest exponents among the pre–Columbian people. Thus, after a long crossing through the forest, surrounded by
tension and torture, imprisoned men and women are introduced to a reality totally different from the one to which they are accustomed. They are
faced with a gigantic city with people marketing, endowed with a clear hierarchy, where people seem to live in harmony, aware of their role within
this society. The contrast between villages is quite visible in the film: the smaller ones with members who

In the decline, some nations were becoming more powerful. There are four particular causes of this decline. The first is an economic change where
there began an expanded trade system. Several trading posts earned riches, and they also set up long distance trade routes. Adam Smith and some of
the Merchants did start the theory called mercantilism. Mercantilism means that the profits that were made from the business are based on the volume
of its trade. The second was religious because the Europeans arrived looking for riches from the new world and the quest for wealth and power. In the
midst of their search, they were also extorting the expensive items from the Catholic Church which begins the start of the crusades on the lands that
was controlled by the Muslims. The third and the most significant was the biological or "The Black Death." The Black Death is most commonly known

DOK Levels: Who Were The Mayans?
Webb's "Depth of Knowledge" Levels
Homework #22:
DOK Level 1 – Question: Who were the Mayans?
The Mayans were the indigenous people of Mexico and most of Central America who have developed one of the most sophisticated pre–Columbian
civilizations. They inhabited numerous territories including some parts of modern–day southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, western Honduras and
western El Salvador. The initial settlement of these indigenous individuals dates back all the way to 1800 B.C.
DOK Level 2 – Question: Summarize the general view of the Mayans.
For many years, historians originally had thought that the Mayans were of a peaceful atmosphere rarely ever involved in war. Although the Mayan
culture was blessed with beauty and intelligence, it was spoiled with plenty of violent acts. As they started to explore through more Mayan cities,
historians began to uncover evidence that proves that Mayans actually occasionally indulge in wars. There were numerous factors leading to the
numerous conflicts involving the Mayans. During the Late Classical era, which occurred from 600 A.D. to 900 A.D., the Mayans were hit with many
catastrophic misfortunes which included soil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

accomplishment was their water pressure technology. The engineers of the civilization built watercourse structure that controlled the flowing of

Latin American Elites In The 19th And Early 20th Century
1)How did archeology and/or literature related to pre–Conquest native civilizations shape the ways Latin American elites view Indians in the 19th and
early 20th centuries? Archeological remains, eyewitness accounts, and indigenous–inspired literature are what remains of a rich Pre–Columbian past.
Despite relative interest in Pre–Columbian empires, latent sentimentality towards preserving past cultures reflects how Latin American elites viewed
Indians during the 19th and 20th centuries. To understand why the elites shared these views, it is important to consider preceding events on the Iberian
peninsula. Historically speaking, the Iberian peninsula served as a bridge between Europe and Africa. The resulting exchange of migrants and invaders

To defeat the old gods, they searched and often destroyed shrines at the expense of natives. This included demolishing existing sacred temples– that the
indigenous worshipped – and erecting catholic churches in their place. One notable example is the leveling of the Aztec Great Pyramid, in which the
Spaniards erected their own cathedral (Chasteen). Latin American Historians, such as Garcia PelГЎez, highlighted the significance of pre–conquest
empires while simultaneously discrediting and disconnecting their contemporary descendants. This process of appropriation and dissociation allowed
them to weave the pre–conquest past into their vision of national heritage. (Earle) In effect, Latin American elites took advantage of pre–conquest
legacies in order to gain an impressive past (Gonzalez–Silen). Before the 18th century, Latin American elites viewed pre–conquest artifacts as
"curiosity cabinet" objects. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, shifting attitudes towards preserving such artifacts coincided with the
process of nation building. Following independence, the elites took measures to preserve the pre–conquest past by constructing monuments and
museums. By doing so, they could embody and make visible the concept of nationalism

Maya Ceramics Essay
There are many different types of styles and cultures that affect the work of ceramics. One type of culture that was very interesting was the
Pre–Columbian Maya culture of Mesoamerica. The natural environment that the Mayans lived in offered a wealth of materials and ideas to give
works of beautiful art. "The Maya used ceramics every day, small cups for drinking vessels, tall cylinders for storing and pouring ritual beverages,
and plates for all sorts of delicious foodstuffs, from tamales to corncakes served with sauces" ( Miller 190). The Maya had specific techniques and
shared similarities with the ancient Greeks regarding how they formed their own clay slips.

Art : The Art Of Art
The Art of Art Some of the first art come out of the Americas was the visual arts of the people of the Caribbean, Central, North and South Americas.
This type of art refers to all art produced until the late 15th century, and occasionally till the very early 16th. The end of this period of art is notably
marked by the untimely arrival of the notorious western explorer Christopher Columbus' landing in the Americas. The European discovery and
exploration, or conquests of the Americas pre–Columbian art flourished all throughout both the northern and southern continents. This for many of the
cultures was their primary form of visual expression, because many but not these early American cultures dished not yet developed complex or even
simple writing systems. This meant that the art was their primary form of expression when it came to subject of cultural importance like; world views,
religion, and cosmologies, and even surgeries. The period up to the late 15th century pre–Columbian art the indigenous cultures that were native to the
land were created using very different mediums. Many of the remaining art work from this period that is perfectly preserved are those which were
placed in stone, and rock. Although at the time a very wide verity was used which included painted textiles, headscarves surfaces, and rocks. In
addition, murals, wood panels, and party much any other surface that could be painted with cultural meaning. The last few hundred years leading up to

Inca people were like most other civilizations at the time in that they were polytheistic, as the Inca were also polytheistic. Which means they worshiped

still so many other gods and goddesses the Inca worshiped but I can't write about all of them.
There are many reasons the Inca were known as one of the greatest pre
Columbian American empire, too many to list. One of the more known reasons was the great architecture the Inca made and created. I bet when you
hear Inca architecture you think of Machu Picchu. Thinking like this isn't very uncommon, and I can't necessarily blame you. Machu Picchu is one of
the most beautiful and most well preserved ancient civilization i've seen. But there's more incredible features that don't meet the eye. Such as how the

flowers, heron, pelican, and condor. The whale was seen as a trophy head. The arachnids and flowers were associated with rain. The bird figures
represented signs of faithfulness. As a tribute to their gods, the Nazca civilization created lines. These lines represented their gods. The lines were
not small at all, they were between 175 to 350 feet long. Their most famous lines are the Sky Bird, Monkey, Spider, and Killer Whale. These
animals were highly valued and considered their gods. To be able to distinctly tell what the lines represented, one had to view them from the sky, even
though the Nazcans were unable to do so. The Nazca civilization is no longer around. They have unfortunately died off. They started declining around

Taking A Look At The Inca Civilizaiton

  • 1. Taking a Look at the Inca Civilizaiton THE INCA CIVILIZATION Inca, the word is derived from Inti, the sun god, was one of the largest and oldest Pre–Columbian civilization extending from Ecuador in north to whole of Chile in south. The region is predominantly known as Andean region and is modern day Peru, with official language being Quechua. They had their own flag which is a very impressive thing about this civilization because flags gained prominence only in 17th–18th century. Incas were the most powerful Empire in that region ruling more 12 million people for around 100 years. Incas are believed to be ruling from 1438 A.D– 1532 A.D with Aristocratic ruling system in the society. Inca Empire was founded by Ayar Manco, popularly known Manco Capac and was known as Sapa Inca "child of the sun". Incas were firm believer in god worshipping creator god Viracocha, Sun god Inti, Thunder god Illapa and earth–mother goddess Pachamama. Incas had a very powerful army conquering different parts of Pre–Columbian America using weapons such as axes, bow and arrow, spears, swords and more importantly Clubs(it was considered as a unique weapon which Incas only used) majorly made up of stone and copper. They had a very keen sense of clothing and dressed according to their position in the society with noble donning more expensive clothing than the Inca commoner. As far as shelter is concerned, housed were divided into two types one for commoners and other for Nobles, the latter being highly decorated and made of stone whereas ... • 2. What Is Peru? Peru is a country located in western South America. Peru is home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, to the Inca Empire. The Spanish Empire conquered Peru in the 16th century and then established a Viceroyalty with their capitol, Lima. After the battle of Ayacucho, Peru ensured it independence. The country then went into recession and kept military profile until the economic rise. Peru has gone through a lot of political and economic issues throughout the years. Peru is a representative democratic republic divided into 25 regions. They also have a high human development index score and their poverty level is at about 25.8%. Some of their economic activities include mining, manufacturing, agriculture, and fishing. The population is at about 31.2 million in 2015. They have many different types of ethnicities including Amerindians, Europeans, Africans, and Asians. The main language is Spanish. They also have mixed cultural traditions which have resulted in a wide diversity. The name of the country came from Biru, which was the name of a local ruler who lived near the Bay of San Miguel, Panama. Another history provided by the contemporary writer Inca Garcilasco de la Vega is that the name Biru was the name of a common... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. “the Application of Mathematics in Pre-Columbian... Since the commencement of human existence, personal qualities such as: the pursuit of knowledge, the desire to expand ones horizons, and the inclination to establish and follow a dream, has significantly impacted society. From the earliest days, right up until the present time, a number of accomplishments have filled the vast expanse of time. Such accomplishments span from exemplary literary works, such as those of Cicero, Virgil, and Goethe; to philosophical breakthroughs of men like Rene Descartes who said, "I think therefore I am", and finally to the unprecedented discoveries in the fields of mathematics and science. Among all the civilizations of time, those of the Pre–Columbian Era seem to have successfully applied mathematical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Theoretically, one could probably say that that even the center of gravity for this kind of triangle could be found by finding the intersection of all the medians, yet the additional weight of the stairs may slightly throw off such an approach. The rectangular base, being only two dimensional would therefore have a center of gravity that is at the dead center, if an only if both sets of lengths and both sets of widths are of equal weight. At this point one can conclude that the center of gravity for the entire pyramid is at the height of the center of gravity for all of the triangles, but joined at one point directly over the center of gravity for the rectangular base (see figure3). The flummoxing part of this is that the Mayans would have never been able to figure this out since Calculus and Isaac Newton would not come about for hundreds of years, yet at the same time, the fact that the pyramids still stand is evidence to their having an excellent center of gravity. The only plausible explanations for this are: for one the Mayans must have ensured extraordinary stability of their base by making sure that all angles were 90В°, second by making sure that in Rectangle (base) ABCD, AB was equal in weight to CD, ensuring that AD was equal in weight to BC, and making certain that all the triangles (sides) were congruent in size and more importantly, weight. (See Figure 4) (Hartog 36). The application of parallel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Early Life In North America Early life in North America is divided into three eras. The first of North American settlers started to settle the lands fifteen to ten thousand years ago. These people came from Asia by crossing a now non–existent and bridge that was given the name, Beringia. The settlers came to North America by following herds of woolly mammoths in order to hunt them for food and use their fur for clothing. These people that were once followed decided to split up and gather all around North America. These natives were called paleo–Indians. People in the Paleo–Indian era began to form various cultures and beliefs, and many different methods of surviving. During this time, groups would follow their sources of food wherever they went and gathered natural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Mayan Civilization And The Maya Empire The Mayan civilization or the Maya Empire, centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now Guatemala, reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar–making and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork. Most of the great stone cities of the Maya were abandoned by A.D. 900. The Maya civilization was one of the most dominant indigenous societies of Mesoamerica. Unlike other scattered indigenous populations of Mesoamerica, the Maya were centered in one geographical block covering all of the Yucatan Peninsula and modern–day Guatemala; Belize and parts of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas; and the western part of Honduras and El Salvador. This concentration showed that the Maya remained relatively secure from invasion by other Mesoamerican peoples. Within that expanse, the Maya lived in three separate sub–areas with distinct environmental and cultural differences: the northern Maya lowlands on the Yucatan Peninsula; the southern lowlands in the Peten district of northern Guatemala and adjacent portions of Mexico, Belize and western Honduras; and the southern Maya highlands, in the mountainous region of southern Guatemala. The earliest Maya settlements date to around 1800 B.C., or the beginning of what is called the Preclassic or Formative Period. The Middle Preclassic Period also saw the rise of the first major ... • 6. Essay on Pre-Columbian civilizations Long before any white man ever set foot in this hemisphere, there were fully functional and highly developed societies here. These civilizations were sophisticated, could even be considered more advanced than the European nations at the time. While the rest of the Eastern world was in the dark Middle Ages, the people here were flourishing. The Aztecs were the Native American people who dominated northern MГ©xico at the time of the Spanish conquest led by Hernan CORTES in the early 16th century. According to their own legends, they originated from a place called Aztlan, somewhere in north or northwestMexico. At that time the Aztecs (who referred to themselves as the Mexica or Tenochca) were a small, nomadic, Nahuatl–speaking aggregation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Maya were also a farming society like the Aztecs. They too, worshiped many gods, whom they felt were responsible for their survival. Gods of rain, wind, and sun were among the ones most worshiped. Mayan leaders went to war to try and capture the ruler of another city. If they did they would sacrifice the prisoner, again much like the Aztecs (Mexico). The Mayans created many things to affect the world. They created a 365 day calendar. They also made great strides in mathematics and astronomy. They used the number zero, which was very advanced for their time period. The astronomers were able to tell what day of the week a date would fall on in future years (Encarta). And they were able to calculate the length of years of other planets with remarkable precision given the instruments they had to work with (Mexico). Contrary to popular belief, the Mayan civilization was not one unified empire, but rather a multitude of separate entities with a common cultural background. Similar to the Greeks, they were religiously and artistically a nation, but politically sovereign states. As many as twenty such states existed on the Yucatan Peninsula, but although a woman has, on rare occasions, ascended to the ruling position, she has never acquired the title of 'mah kina' (one of the highest titles that can be achieved)(Encarta). Music was central to both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. European Colonization Of Native Americans European diseases were responsible for the deaths of more than half of the Incan empire and for the passing of as much as ninety percent of the natives of coastal New England (Mann, "1491"). Such a reduction of the strength and numbers of American Indian civilization was a considerable promoting factor in European conquest of and colonization of the Americas. If Native Americans had been capable of exhibiting a more formidable immunological response to European pathogens, colonization of the Americas would have followed a vastly different path, leading to tremendous differences in the development of the New World and the Old World and their mutual relationship. If European disease had not affected Native Americans, the native populations of the New World would have been able to create a much more successful military resistance to foreign invaders. An utterly decimated Native American population was unable to oppose a superior European force, a force that was not beleaguered by susceptibility to the very diseases that destroyed Native American populations. Many researchers have tried to estimate the population of pre–Columbian America. Historian Dr. Henry F. Dobyns has suggested that the native population reached levels as far as 112 million in 1491 before Columbus's arrival. This number plummeted to less than 6 million by 1650, largely as a result of exposure to wave after wave of European diseases, which proved to be extremely effective at terrorizing the native population ... • 8. Intricacies Of The Pre-Columbian Civilizations In 1491 By... The cultural and societal intricacies of the Pre–Columbian civilizations in the Americas have been remarkably misinterpreted for centuries. In his novel 1491, Charles C Mann challenges the common misconception that these people roamed the Americas without leaving so much as an anthropogenic footprint prior to the re–colonization by Europeans. He clearly debunks this myth by providing evidence from several different fields, that the indigenous people interacted directly with the environments they lived in. Mann conclusively argues that these people were misunderstood due to the complexity of their societies, by showing that native peoples of the Americas sculpted the environments they inhabited. The civilizations that thrived prior to the arrival of the Europeans, employed many complex agricultural methods that benefited organisms within their ecosystems, in addition to erecting magnificent metropolises. The most common agricultural methods included "slash and char" in densely forested regions, terracing on steep hillsides and milpas–small plots–found in lower wetlands. "Slash and char" a term dubbed by Christopher Steiner–a soil scientist from the University of Bayreuth– created "terra preta" a very nutrient rich soil that increases the fertility of the land and provides habitats for a diverse variety of microorganisms (Mann 345–346). Other features like the "forested islands" in the Beni (Mann 344), and the "fallows" in the Amazon (Mann 286) were anthropogenic creations mistaken for geological landforms due to lack of examination of the degrading man–made ceramics in the mounds, which indicate they were produced by an advanced civilization. Although Milpa's and terracing were managed differently than the regions where terra preta transformed infertile areas into old–growth orchards called "fallows," all three methods fortified the soil quality and manipulated crops to amplify productivity in order to support major populations. Without large–scale agricultural systems, a massive society could not have existed. Another key line of evidence supporting this idea, that Indians sculpted their own environment, is perhaps the most visible. Pyramids and plazas akin to ones in Teotihuacan and Huaricanga would not exist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The United States History During The World History It's very interesting to me when studying America history in the United States. When I lived in Viet Nam, I studied American history in the World History Program in high school. However, this program only focused on the history of America in the 20th century such as the Second Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. We studied very in detail about the Cold War because this event related to Viet Nam war. The Cold War was no large–scale fighting directly between the United States and Soviet Union. They are different in economy and politics which are communist and capitalist. When taking History 1301 course, I am really interested when I have an opportunity to exam American history from pre–Columbian to Civil War. I knew that the 13 colonies created a war to gain freedom from the Great Britain. However, I do not know the reasons why they had to left England to come to the New World, the United States. Now after reviewing Unit 1, I know they had to leave their own country to come to the United Sates for god, gold, and government. For example, The Pilgrims, who established Plymouth colony, fled to Holland in 1607to come to the New World to look for a freedom in religion in the New World. Moreover, the origin of the first people who came to the Americas is from Asia is a new idea to me. Based on the evidence of archeologists found in 1927, they concluded that the first known natives from North Asia came to the America through a frozen patch of land known as ... • 10. Why US History Began Essay The 14th and 15th centuries were a period of great change which caused many vital aspects of American history to be lost, however, through science, archaeology, and other techniques, historians have been able to make new discoveries about the Americas detailed in 1491 by Charles C. Mann. These revelations beg the question: When should U.S. History officially begin? While the U.S. was not founded until after 1492, U.S. history should start before 1492 because Native Americans have had lasting impacts on parts of nature which could give insight into important scientific questions, and more education of the pre–Columbian era combats the ethnocentric idea that Native Americans were largely savages and not as civilized as other ancient societies. It also gives insight into the nature of the Native Americans and their livelihoods. The mound building engineers who built Cahokia's Monks Mound show us that even though the Indians lived centuries ago, they were just as able as other ancient civilizations and even modern ones. The monks mound was built on clay which is prone to swelling and by insulating and watering the mound, it still exists today (Mann 260). Just as the Ancient Egyptians are studied for their pyramids, the Cahokians should be studied as part of Ancient U.S. History demonstrating their engineering ability. Finally, an achievement of Native Americans that makes them worthy of inclusion in U.S. History is the invention of terra preta, an unusually fertile soil found in Amazonia that is anthropogenic. Indians likely used the technique, slash–and–char to create charcoal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Ancient Mexican Art Research Paper Dr. Mathews' lecture focused on explaining the archeological discoveries of ancient Mexican cultures, but she left us pondering the reason for ancient Mexican art not being seen as part of ancient art by modern culture. It is common when thinking of ancient civilizations to think of the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Romans, and a long list before the Pre–Columbian civilizations. One theory that comes to mind is the fact that the European and Mediterranean art did not have to be discovered. Brilliant works of art such as the Aphrodite of Knidos and other ancient European works of art did not have to be discovered. These works of art were always on display and in good condition. Many pieces of Pre–Columbian art went undiscovered for a long time. Even today we seem to just be scratching the surface in regards to the pre Columbian art that is still yet to be discovered.... • 13. The Maya Socialization, A Mesoamerican Civilization The Maya civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization developed by the Maya peoples, and noted for its hieroglyphic script–the only known fully developed writing system of the pre–Columbian Americas–as well as for its art, architecture, mathematics, calendar, and astronomical system. The Maya civilization developed in an area that encompasses southeastern Mexico, all of Guatemala and Belize, and the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador. This region consists of the northern lowlands encompassing the YucatГ Ўn Peninsula, and the highlands of the Sierra Madre, running from the Mexican state of Chiapas, across southern Guatemala and onwards into El Salvador, and the southern lowlands of the Pacific littoral plain. The Archaic period, prior to 2000 BC, saw the first developments in agriculture and the earliest villages. The Preclassic period (c. 2000 BC to 250 AD) saw the establishment of the first complex societies in the Maya region, and the cultivation of the staple crops of the Maya diet, including maize, beans, squashes, and chili peppers. The first Maya cities developed around 750 BC, and by 500 BC these cities possessed monumental architecture, including large temples with elaborate stucco faГ§ades. Hieroglyphic writing was being used in the Maya region by the 3rd century BC. In the Late Preclassic a number of large cities developed in the PetГ©n Basin, and Kaminaljuyu rose to prominence in the Guatemalan Highlands. Beginning around 250 AD, the Classic period is ... The importance of these Native American pre–Columbian civilizations in the New World were that the ancient Indians adapted to their diverse environments. The ruins, designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1982, are preserved and protected to visitors can learn about how pre–Columbian people lived in North America. Cahokia is one of more than 900 world heritage sites. Funding these properties cost a small fortune and some people think it isn't worth it. However, I believe that it's essential to protect sites such as Cahokia Mounds so they won't last forever. When we study old cultures we learn how people adapt to their environment and cope with natural disasters. We learn how patterns of immigration affect languages and why civilizations thrive or die out. Studying the remints of culture, help us understand how people lived long ago, and helps us understand our own civilization. However, not all of the world heritage sites are ancient ruins; also included are Australia's modern Sydney Opera House, the Tower of London, in England, The Statue of Liberty, in New York Harbor, and other recognizable structures. Food Culture of Mexican Mayans Southeast Mexico was inhabited by the Mayan Indians many years ago, and their basic eating habits were based on the fact that they were primarily nomadic hunters by nature. As a result, they lived off the land and regularly consumed animals that roamed those lands in that time. Mexican culture food at the time simply consisted of the meat of rabbits, deer, raccoons and armadillos. Birds were considered a delicacy and pigeons, turkeys and quail were regularly eaten. This often included frogs, snakes and turtles. These meat delicacies were perfectly complemented by land grown vegetables like tropical fruits, beans and corn. • 18. Effects Of The Aztecs During The Conquistadors Mexico was one of the main points of the conquistadors' conquest. Mexico was home to two of the biggest Pre–Colombian civilizations, the Aztecs and the Mayans. The Mayans and Aztecs both faced the wrath of the conquistadors, as they were both conquered very easily due to the Spanish's advanced weaponry. After conquering the natives, the Spanish would rule over that land for anout 300 years. This new ruling came with new foods, races, animals, and changes that effected the natives. One of things that was brought to Mexico during the Colombian Exchange, although unintentonally, was disease. The Spanish brought diseases such as smallpox, measles, tuberculosis, and mumps. These were diseases that the natives had not been exposed to, so they had no immunity to them. Even though the Spanish did have much more advanced weaponry than the natives, it was the diseases that wiped out most of the native population. It is believed that within a century of the arrival of the Spanish, the population of the Aztecs decreased by 80–95%, going from 12.5M to roughly about 1.5M in population (History of Disease). The Spanish shared the same fate, but not as severe, many died from syphillis. A disease that was much more dangerous during that time than it is today. Burland is a historical analysis of the religion of ancient Mexico that provides an alternate informative viewpoint on the overall history of the Mexican civilization. Burland provides a concise history of the Mexican people groups in the first few chapters, beginning from the earliest peoples of more than 20,000 years ago to the rise of the Aztecs in the 1300s. The Mayans are briefly mentioned to illustrate the important background of primary social system common to the whole of Meso–America: communities were established for worship rather than for secular life. The Aztecs were the main focus of the dissection of the Mexican religious culture, as Burland expounded upon the ancient gods and the various individuals of spiritual importance in their community. These individuals covered a vast range of classes, such as the emperor, who was seen as a mediator between heaven and earth, the medicine women, who could see and interpret visions, and the temple worshippers who were trained from infanthood. Festivals, calendrical system, astronomy, medicine, and the organization of the state were all closely tied to the worship of the gods. • 20. History And Development Of Mesoamerica Steven Hermosillo Professor Duran History 101 23 May 2016 The History and Development of Mesoamerica According to Module 4, "America's Pre–Columbian populations evolved into highly developed communities which by the time of the European invasion and conquest in the 16th century had engendered some of the world's most highly evolved civilizations, in both North and South America." Module 4 states that "Shortly after Columbus arrived in the Caribbean in 1492–1493, other Europeans made their way to various parts of America, but in the process they unwittingly brought Eurasian disease pathogens to which America's Pre–Columbian population were not immune or ready. Thus, even before the actual invasions and conquests began, much of the Pre–Columbian population had already been physically and numerically decimated, which further aggravated the problem of dearth of Native historical records, since many Pre–Columbian American societies passed their histories down orally and through their rituals." Columbus brought disease to America's Pre–Columbian population that were not immune or ready. "In this vein, these pre–conquest decimations also gave the misleading impression to most Europeans that the American continent was a sparely populated wilderness peopled by societies with underdeveloped cultures. Even with its discovery in the late 1400s by Christopher Columbus when he arrived in the Caribbean, sugar, the crop that Columbus "took westward, was a curse" because of all effort needed to produce the crop (113). Sugar rationalized slavery in the Old world because of the product's trade value and the triangles that were developed involving products being shipped from the Americas, finished products from Europe being shipped to Africa in order to buy slaves. The cycle continued for years to establish the event that is now known historically as the slave trade, another major event in history that was based around food. Centuries of experiences were need to advise people and help them realize that there is no justification for slavery, so British citizens began to boycott and fight slavery during the 1790s. In order to win the battle against the superimposed injustice that had plagued the African people for centuries, more than 300,000 people were said to have given up the sugar. The way to defeat enslavement was to damage the industry that utilized bondage the most, the sugar industry. The conditions and lifestyle of slaves had to be shown to spark this inspirational movement into effect and the newfound motivation led the British people to eradicate all forms of slave labor that were related to the nation, as well as, punish the sugar industry to the point of having to abolish the Atlantic slave ... Mann about the pre–Columbian Americas. Consists of a groundbreaking study that radically alters our understanding of the Americas before the arrival of the Europeans in 1492. The book presents recent research findings in different fields that suggest human populations in the Western Hemisphere were more numerous, had arrived earlier, were more sophisticated culturally, and controlled and shaped the natural landscape to a greater extent than scholars had previously thought. The book itself is a very readable account of the history of the American people before the lands were 'discovered' by Europeans in 1492 and gives a lot to think about as you are reading it. In the book Mann reveals how a new generation of researchers equipped with novel scientific techniques came up with new unheard set of conclusions never heard before. The book does a great job explaining everything with great details but it also raises many questions. What he is most interested in showing us the readers and what I believe his thesis is in how American Indians like all other humans' beings– were intensely involved in shaping the world they lived in. Perhaps this was because they stemmed from a similar progenitor religion in the distant past, perhaps they picked up on some basic part of the human psyche. While there were many differences in the intricacies of the religions of Polynesia, the Andes, and Mesoamerica, they all shared a polytheistic faith, a belief that gods are derived from nature, and a belief that sacrifice was needed to maintain the natural order of the world. In polynesia, the dominant pre–columbian religion was animism–the belief that all things have some sort of spiritual power. In Polynesia, this power was called mana (Encyclopedia Britannica). Polynesians believed that this spiritual power, this mana, could be negated by human actions. As a result of this, many tapu (brought into English as taboo) were set up in order to prevent humans from upsetting the natural order of the world. As with their neighbors in Mesoamerica, the polynesians believed in a form of human sacrifice to right the unbalance in the mana of a person or a thing. This was especially clear when someone walked over the shadow of a chief or a noble. It was thought that this would damage the mana of the person and only the death of the offender would correct this unbalance. The death of this civilization is thought to be due to the natural disaster El Nino, a worldwide hurricane and the massive, destructive flooding that came with it.
