Gustav Holst, born in Cheltenham in September 1847, is still today considered to be one of the greatest music composers of all time. He was not very
fond of music when he was younger, but he enjoyed the piano. He was sent to Cheltenham Grammar School and forced to take long music lessons, even
though he had neuritis in his hands.
His first job was an organist and Choirmaster at the Choral Society, Bourbon on the Water. Impressed at his good ear for music, his father borrowed
some money to send him to the Royal College of Music, which he had previously failed to enter.

After many refusals of his works, Holst became rather unwell, so took him to Algeria for a holiday. The warm climate and bright colours of Algeria
inspired Holst, so he decided to start working on a new piece called Beni Mora, but it was not a great success.
In 1912, his performance of The Cloud Messenger was a hit, so he went to Spain for a holiday to celebrate. While there, he met Clifford Bax, who
encouraged him to write a movement called The Planets. It was very successful.
In 1923, Holst was conducting a rehearsal at University College, when he slipped and fell off the platform onto his head. The damage was deadly,
and it was years before he recovered from the effects.
Later on, after a trip to America, Holst received great congratulations for his performance of the Planets, and an anonymous rich man gave him several
hundred pounds to spend on his music. But, Holst was beginning to have bad effects of the concussion he was in earlier, and he couldn't bear to have
anything touch the back of his head. He spent many nights in agony, so his doctor suggested that he moved away from London.
So that is exactly what he did. He bought a small house in Thaxtead and lived there for nearly a year, but much of his music was failing.

The Importance Of Seeing The Philadelphia Orchestra...
Last year I had the privilege of seeing the Philadelphia Orchestra perform Gustav Holst's: The Planets Suite. The piece as a whole is one that pulls
the strings of your heart from the first pound to the last mystic moment of silence. It has been a year since I heard the orchestral piece in full, and
ever since, I have been awaiting to get an opportunity like that again. It is unfortunately a rare occurance in my generation to feel so strongly about a
piece of art. The world is at our fingertips, and yet we have no urge to explore it.
According to Gustav, the Planets were a depiction of life and the many stages of its progression. As a young adult and musician this suite inspired a
new way of seeing, feeling, and hearing life. Thierry Fischer, a music director at Utah Symphony wrote, "Holst denied that the suite has any connection
to the classical Zodiac other than the names and traits of the personified planets, that connection by itself is enough for the music to conjure strong
images of the mythological deities associated with each."
Mars, the bringer of war, begins with five quiet yet dominant beats in a reverberating 5/4 rhythm. As the movement continues we hear the grinding
minor chords, which leaves the ear unsettled. Mars is said to be an obvious illustration of war, the depressing and frightening steady march of soldiers
as they walk toward the unknown. Throughout the entire movement there is no clear harmonic release, the chromaticism just sways back and forth.

At the end of the 19th century, fin de siГЁcle did not just indicate the end of one century: it indicated the collapse of language and a way of
thinking. This idea was illustrated by works such as von Hofmannstahl's Lord Chandos Letter and Schnitzler's Dream Story, which seem to argue
that a new mode of thinking was necessary for a new age. Indeed, Freud's writings and Trakl's poems offered this new mode of thinking by
challenging the border between what is "real" and what is "imaginary" through their works. In music and art, a similar trend was taking place: late 19th
century works offered the audience a window into the artist's emotions, experiences, and desires. This idea is seen in Gustav Mahler's 1st Symphony and
Egon Schiele's Seated Male Nude, in which both artists channel their experiences and emotions to release suppressed elements of their psyches.

were composed from 1914–1916 as stated in Faber's writing on Holst. The planets contain seven compositions in total ranging from the war bringer

Sunday, May 29th 2016, 2:55PM: I am waiting for the concert to begin as I watch the musicians walk onto the stage one by one, rehearsing a few notes
on their instrument to warm up a bit and probably test the pitch of the instrument. As more and more get up on the stage, the sound of them rehearsing
feel more and more chaotic, confusing and hard to follow, reminding me of Stravinski's work. All of the sudden, they stop and start playing
harmoniously a few notes thus inviting the conductor on the stage – the concert was about to start.
Before the main performance, there were two shorter pieces, Ibert's Bacchanale and Dusapin's Outscape. In retrospec,t both were wonderful choices as
a prelude to Holst's The Planets as I felt the three pieces fit well together when put back to back and they even inspired to me an overarching message.
Jacques Ibert's Bacchanale was composed in 1956, only 6 years before it's author's death. Unlike his previous compositions which were marked by
the tension and turmoil of the interwar period and World War 2, Bacchanale is the culmination of his rather wild and hard to pigeonhole style. The
title evokes the Roman festival bearing the same name, a tribute to the wine god Bacchus. Bacchanalia were notorious for the excessive drinking,
dancing and performing for as long as the participants could remain standing and they were living proof of the carefree lifestyle Romans could afford
to have.

Concert Report: Mozart Symphony No. 40 The western classical concert that I have chosen to review is A Tale of Two Symphonies. This concert is
performed in the Avery Fisher hall within the Lincoln Center in New York City. It was performed on July 29, 2008. Theorchestra that is performing is

I feel that the fourteen members of chamber orchestra and the two vocalists did an outstanding job. This piece was well put together. I loved the
harmony that was brought forth between the orchestra and the vocalists. The two vocalists a tenor known as Paul Groves and a soprano known as
Anna Larson, did a beautiful job staying in tune. The way that their voices went back and forth in harmony was just beautiful. Although I enjoyed
both pieces of music I really enjoyed the works of Gustav Mahler and his piece Lied von der Erde. This piece is rich in drama. I feel that the texture
used is this song is imitative polyphony. I feel that there are various parts in this song that use the similar melodies. I feel that the harmony between
the two vocalists were right on with each other and the orchestra. You can hear the brass instruments in the very beginning of the songs then the
strings, wind instruments along with the piano and keyboards begin to make their entrance. They come together very strong but in a peaceful way at
first. Towards the middle of the song the tempo and rhythm really picks up (it seems as if all of their emotions are bursting out) then it slowly begins

Languages form an essential part of every human experience. To express oneself is one of the simplest joys we can experience. English and Music are
two such languages in my life, that indirectly relate to, have a profound impact on mine. My interests in Music, just as in Literature, extend to a wide

my spare time, I have been teaching English to Arab students. It has been a remarkably challenging experience. I have learned far more teaching than I

Whether on purpose or not, artworks will always have emotion and messages etched into them which viewers pick up on. The viewers develop
these emotions and messages by analysing certain elements and principles of the piece. One can often find that if you use an element in two ways
that are the complete opposite to each other, you will effect the mood similarly. For example, cool colours are associated with sadness, while warm
tones with happiness. Another example being that of the two emotions love and loneliness which are openly displayed in two pieces we will be
analysing. The first being a Austrian piece 'The Kiss' made by Gustav Klimt in 1908. A well known piece highly associated with love, and quite the
opposite to Russel Drysdale's 'The Drover's Wife'. Made in 1945, the Australia artwork shows loneliness. These two artworks deliver completely
different meanings to the viewers simply by differing the ways in which certain elements and principles are used. Some of which being colour, space,
and emphasis. By analysing these emotive pieces, we will develop an understanding of why and how art can make us feel different emotions.

Gustav Theodore Holst was born on September 21st, 1874 and died on May 25th, 1934 he was an English composer and teacher. He was best known
for The Planets suite, this composition became famous internationally after World War One. The Planets was composed from 1914 to 1916, it had
seven movements, each of the movements had the Astrological traits of the planets but had no connections to mythology. The first movement of the
suite is Mars Bringer of War which refers to the God of War. This movement includes various instruments such as tubas, trumpets, trombones, horns,
timpani, flutes, clarinets, violins, cellos, and snare drums. The movement was characterized by five beats and a minor scale which indicates the
opposite of happy. There is no harmonic purpose in the Bringer of War piece, I would classify it as an inhuman piece of work because war is horrific,
insensible at all costs. The music was suspenseful and tormenting since the beginning, it had a fast tempo throughout the whole movement. Many
dynamics were used all the way through, when the movement was finishing up many rests kept showing as if war came to an end or was coming to an
end. Mars, Bringer of War gave me an utterly angry, threatening vibe, the combination of the rhythms, the vibrato of the string instruments and the beats

The hall was very well lit the whole time during the performance. I expected for the hall to be dimmed just to make the room feel more intimate,
but I guess I had a bias idea of what a classical performance should look like. I found the venue to be small compared to what o was anticipating.
The walls to the venue seemed to be made out of a white marble and it had a huge beautiful organ as the back drop. There were also two balconies,
one in each side of the room, and a large chandelier in the middle that shined on the orchestra below. The venue could probably be classified as a warm
/ friendly environment.
The attire of the orchestra was the usual black and white tux for men and the black dressy dresses for the ladies. Being that it was a classical music
event, I didn't see anything out of the ordinary with the outfits and the colors didn't call my attention in any way either. It was the normal, expected
look that you would see for these type of performers to have. I saw a few lace dresses, some had embroidery, and others were just plain black dresses.

towards each other. This play was a very interesting and comedic read. Prelude to a kiss is a play any audience would enjoy and get something out

The author Craig Lucas never gave an explanation on why there was a supernatural element just there was one and it made the conflict. Beside the
supernatural aspect there was some spirituality in the play. Craig Lucas never mentioned in the play that they were religious but they had a
christian wedding so there must have a spiritual element in there beside the supernatural. The language of the play was very modern, but when Rita
and the Old Man changed bodies, the Old Man would say many oldish sayings or just many things that didn't fit with how Rita and Peter talked.

Vienna was a city in turmoil at the end of the nineteenth century. Society was changing; women were beginning to gain power; art was changing.
Gustav Klimt and his Vienna Secession played a great role in this modernization of Vienna. Klimt began as an academic painter; however, after both
his father and brother died, his style began to change. He helped found the Vienna Secession, and he began to draw and paint nude models. He never
married, but he had multiple affairs with his models. During the 1890s–due to all the changes in his life and the city around him–his lifestyle and
therefore artistic style began to completely and radically change from heavily academic art to extremely scandalous, almost pornographic work. The
rise of feminism and general empowerment of women in Vienna stimulated theVienna Secession, specifically Gustav Klimt's work, which also assisted
the growth of feminist movements. Gustav Klimt and Viennese feminist movements had a symbiotic relationship, each helping and needing the other
succeed.
Klimt was not a feminist; however, without the feminist movements of Vienna, he would not have been nearly as successful. He enjoyed the
