PETAL: Sustained Writing in English
1. Your introduction needs to:
• Begin with a powerful statement about the topic
• Address the question
• Present your core argument in relation to the question and
topic
• Introduce the text/s and composer/s
• Your introduction is the road map for your response
2. PETAL paragraphs - The body paragraphs in your response need to be structured in the following way to
ensure your analysis is thorough and effective. Each of the body paragraphs, need to include a:
P = Point. Your topic sentence must contain a major point in your argument/discussion; this is the central
idea of the paragraph.
E = Evidence/Example. The point you make needs to be supported by evidence from the text. You can show
your understanding by discussing relevant parts of the text. Direct quotes are best here, or specific examples
of films or images.
T = Technique. You must analyse HOW meaning is conveyed by language. Here you discuss the language or
visual techniques evident in the quote or example you have provided. (Like camera shots, colour,
positioning, etc.)
A = Analysis. This is where you show your understanding by explaining in more detail HOW the language
techniques convey the key idea, supported by the quote/example.
L = In the last sentence try to sum up the paragraph linking it to the topic/question and then providing a LINK
to the next main point (linking sentence).
3. In the conclusion you need to:
• summarise your main points
• restate your opinion or the main focus of the topic
• reach a conclusion with a final comment or pertinent quote
Your conclusion is like your travel journal – tell us where you have been in your writing piece.
