I watch many TV shows, so I have seen almost every Forensic TV show that there is. Watching else
shows when I was younger made me alittle interested in the forensic field and like for some at the

According to a report published by the United States Census Bureau, American spends about 3952
hours on a yearly basis on using media with approximately 1704 hours being used up watching
television (Kaus and Thapar 2014). These numbers are equivalent to watching the television for
more than two months and five months on other forms of media. In addition to this, more than 70%
of women have also dominated all forms of media particularly the social networks (Kaus and

media could possibly help to decrease the problem. About–Face is a non–profit organization out of
San Francisco. It began in August of 1995 and their purpose is to combat negative and distorted

ideal body image not being realistic, it is almost impossible for fashion companies to find models
that fit so they have resorted to using a process called airbrushing. This involves retouching photos
to remove, what the media refers to as flaws. It can also be used to change or enhance the image.
This converts photos using programs such as photoshop to the point where they merely resemble the
original. This distorts the reality of body image in teenage girls because when they see photos in
commercials and magazines they do not see the amount of time used to remove wrinkles and
cellulite or the amount of time used to lengthen arms and legs. This distortion of reality negativity
influences girls which is proved by the increase in eating disorders among teenage girls. 70% of

The divisiveness of these practices can be tremendous. Personally, I tend to get my information
from several sources, analyze the data, and then come to a rational conclusion as to what I believe
the truth to be. This approach has allowed me to look through the partisan viewpoint, allowing me

Media Convergence
The convergence of media, especially the more traditional media sources taking to the internet, has
been both a blessing and a curse. The ability to report on anything in the world at a moment's notice

Having control over an entire country's population's opinion is a powerful thing to have. Possessing
that control would allow you to direct how the population spends their money or even who they like
and dislike in politics. The mainstream media news outlets have this control and are expected to
give us information that is unbiased, fair, and not meant to sway our opinion. The topic I will be
exploring is bias in the mainstream news media and how it effects their viewers. This is an
important topic in the field of communication because it has such a great impact on any country that
uses mass media to disseminate information. The information can be given to the viewers with a
certain twist to intentionally shape their view of an event, or it can be unintentionally bias just by
the tone and manner they are reporting on the event. I am going to research how mass media news
outlets influence the viewers opinion, and what goes in to picking the news stories covered. These
are controversial topics to get into, but important to consider. They can have a very big impact on
things like elections for a political office, support or dislike of a certain group, or can sway your
opinion of who is the hero in a certain story. My sources will need to show specific examples of
how the media is biased towards one opinion, what the effects are from this are, and who makes the

Monographs". It is an in–depth research article that explores areas of journalism like how certain
stories get covered and how come some don't. It gives specific examples of how internal and
external factors that influence that decision. The article is extremely relevant to my research. The
author is very credible, with a PhD in Mass Communication along with other degrees. She is also a
Professor at the Reed College of Media, West Virginia

Social media is used as a tool to talk to loved ones and friends to make us feel close to them, but it
has been shown that social media has the exact opposite effect. It's makes some people feel alone,
while other people live it up in trash cans with their egos as big as Rockefeller's network. Common
sense seems to dictate that it would be smarter to not put so much value on one photo, but in the
memories that those photos hold, but, nowadays people only care about the photos, not memories.
Its result is a generation filled with young kids suffering with mental health problems.
The study from the Association for Psychological Science states the likes you get on social media
impacts the brains and behaviors of teenagers. The study found "the same brain circuits that are
activated by eating chocolate and winning money are activated when teenagers see large numbers of
"likes" on their own photos or the photos of peers in a social network" (APS). In other words, Teens
have become, so dependent on social media, that getting one like is like winning money or eating
chocolate. The study shows how teens have become obsessed for people to tell them their pretty and
beautiful to fill their holes in their huge egos they can't be done by themselves anymore. The study
also found that "when the teens saw their own photos with a large number of likes, we saw activity
across a wide variety of regions in the brain, said lead author Lauren Sherman, a researcher in the
brain mapping center and the UCLA branch of the Children's Digital Media Center, Los Angeles."

Does social media provide benefits or is it damaging? This is a dilemma faced by both parents and
teens today with numerous social media platforms evolving and growing. While issues with social
media can arise, such as excessive usage, an effort to balance work and entertainment must be
carefully achieved in order to live a fulfilling life. Undeniably, the benefits of social media, like easy
sharing and starting conversations with others, outweigh the detriments. Although social media can
become addicting and hurtful, in general, it benefits society by providing unlimited amounts of
information, creating an equal platform for all, and allowing people to connect easily.
Primarily, social media has three common problems that affect the people use it frequently. The
most notable of these problems is social media addiction. Becoming addicted to anything is
detrimental to a person's health, but social media is damaging both mentally and physically. A study
done in 2017 on 200 teenagers showed that "Social media addiction...significantly affects social
connectedness" (Savci 1). The factors that were common in social media addiction were ––
"preoccupation with social media, unreasonable tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, continuity,
replacement, continued excessive use, deceiving, escape, and inner conflict" (Savci 2). All of these
are extremely negative effects social media can have in one's life. Additionally, one of the larger
problems that arises is a loss of personal connections. When someone is absorbed in social media, it
is easy to become engrossed in how many followers one has and what everyone else is achieving.
This can lead to less frequent conversations with people with whom they are in contact with on a
daily basis. In an article written by Curtis Silver, he states "having an exponentially high number of
Facebook friends means nothing as you can only maintain 150 social relationships" (Silver 445).
There may be too much focus today on how many Instagram followers someone has instead of the
last time a person interacted with their grandparents or a significant friend or family member. The

There are 2.3 billion active social media users (Kit Smith 1). Meaning the majority of people go on
social media every day. Social media is almost a part of every teen's life it's how they stay connected
and meet up with people. But social media may be worse than what most people would think. It's
leading to much worse things for teenagers that they won't see coming since social media is a huge

American culture has changed so much in the past century. Looking back to the 1900s there wasn't
technology like we have today. Today with all the technology and the capabilities of getting
breaking news faster allows us to input that information in our minds and it eventually pulls people
into the conflict. There are pros and cons about whether we should get news faster or is the media
adding fuel to the fire with stories. When you look at the word responsibilities you often tend to
think that it holds someone accountable whether its you, the media or a different country. When you
look at social responsibilities from the media you end up with a 50/50 chance of that information
being true.
My next question is does the information media have social responsibility? Some may say no they
don't have social responsibility. As for many of us we tend to believe they do have social
responsibility. They are responsible for what they are publishing. Let's look at an example of this.
Let's say I was to go downtown and make up a story. I then make a big scene to gather as many
people as I can. Then as the people are listening and watching I precede to tell them the local county
officials are spending the tax payer's money on alcohol and private parties for themselves. At this
point I honestly don't know if they do but I heard it from a friend of mine. So, by hearing that I
assume its true since that person is my friend. Well in this case its not true but I end up getting
arrested for defaming the officials. Now look at the media. They can publish an article making
claims that the presidential campaign is doing illegal activity. Do they get arrested for making false
claims? The answer is no. Why is that? That's not very fair if you think about it.
If the media is going to publish millions of stories just because they have journalists reporting back
to them then that holds them accountable for the story. They are taking the word from a person
which they don't know if that journalist is tweaking the story to make it seem bigger then what it
was. If the media decides to base their decisions upon their scouters or what they hear then

First, it is important to consider that there are almost an unlimited number of other factors that can
influence ones behavior. The reason an individual will commit a violent act is based on millions of
past experiences, memories, and actions. We know that media can affect behavior but how much is
still unknown.
In a closed off lab environment we can study how much media violence effects behavior. The
strength of the correlation between media violence and aggressive behavior found on meta–analysis
(in the lab) is greater than the correlation between that of tobacco smoke and lung cancer. (Bar–on)

aspects of our lives. Whether social media is used for linking up with old friends or sharing a

used social media in ways that negatively affected her. She was so unsatisfied with her existence in

television (TV), however many experts feel we are constantly affected by the media whether we
think we are or not. Theorists believe that too much media exposure can lead to knowledge,

Certain news stations use websites like Facebook to live stream a press conference or police chase
as it is happening, which is useful to people who will be traveling or who are trying to keep up to
date, but don't have current access to a television. Social media also allows for the open expression
of your views. This allows others to see your opinion and share their similar ideas with you, or even
express their opposing views. Along with these positives, comes the negatives. If you go to a
classroom and watch from the back, you'll notice how many students are using their cell phones
when the professor isn't looking, or who are using it out in the open without any care. This not only
