2. Lighting in interviews
SOFTBOX: Why use it?
1. Its easier on the eyes of the interviewee.
2. More pleasant to actors faces, kinder light and compliments
skin (e.g, removes blemishes interviewee may or may not
have)
3. TIPS.
• - Move you interviewee as far from the wall as possible, this will cut down the light
spell you get from the SOFTBOX on to the wall and create a lot more depth in the
room as the background goes out of focus.
• Add a backlight to add more separation, with a cooler colour to get some contrast
going.
• For more serious interviews dealing with hard topics, such as ours which will be
dealing with cyber bullying, it is effective to place our interviewee on a black
background to make it intense.
• We must make sure the background we use is consistent for our subject matter
because the smallest shift in our background colour will completely alter the feel
of our shot.
4. Popular Techniques
• “The Christmas lights in the background look”
• - popular because of how great it looks but also because its so cheap and simple to
set up.
• - set them up as randomly as possible, and then bring your interviewee as far from
them as possible so that you can get the lights out of focus as much as possible.
• Do NOT use LED lights as they flicker and ruin your shot.
