• 1st swimming competition was held in the 15-16 century in England. In 1896
swimming was added to the list of Olympic competitions.
• Today, there a lot of countries swimming to win awards. Europe unites sportsmen
in LEN – European national league of swimming.
• A lot of Russian people take part in swimming competitions. Yulia Efimova is a
famous Russian swimmer. She has won 7 gold awards, 5 silver and 2 bronze
awards.

3. Biathlon
Biathlon is a winter Olympic sport. This sport combines
cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The most
popular stars of Biathlon are Magdalena Neuner and
Ole Einar Bjoerndalen. Bjoerndalen has won a lot of
rounds. He has received five prizes. Ole Einar won the
world cup five times in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007.
Greece was the first country to compete in Biathlon.
4. Basketball
Basketball is a popular sport in Russia. In
fact, a lot of Russian people like this sport
a lot.
Russian people have played basketball for long
time. It came to Russia in 1901. In 1900
James Stocks arrived in Russia to learn
young men to play basketball.
Nowadays basketball is popular, but not like
football or hockey.
Today, there are thousands of basketball clubs
in Russia, including professional
clubs, such as CSKA and Veko.
Basketball is very popular among Russian
teens. Many Russian children have
basketball lessons at school. I think in the
future more people will be interested in
basketball.

5. Chess
Chess is a popular sport in Russia.
Chess appeared in the 6th century in India. In the 9th
and 10th century chess appeared in Europe. In 1886
championships all over the world began.
Today, many people play chess for pleasure, they also
take part in different competitions.

7. Figure skating
Figure skating is a popular sport in Russia.
Russian people have been going in for figure skating for a long
time. This sport appeared in Russia in 1865. Then, there a skating
rink in Yusupov park was opened. On March 5, 1878 the rink
hosted the first competition of Russian figure skaters.
Many sportsmen, who studied at Russian
skating schools, have become famous: Irina
Slytskaya, Alexey Yagudin, Evgeniy Pluschenko
and many others. Their coaches are world-
known.
9. Volleyball
Volleyball is the most popular sport in Russia.
In fact a lot of people in Russia say that they love playing
volleyball .
Russian people have played volleyball for a very long time. It is a
game with a ball. First played in 1895. Volleyball is a team
sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net.
Today, this sport is very popular in our school, a lot of teenagers
play volleyball. We have a volleyball club in where the best
teacher of the world works.
