4. GREECE The oldest known form of
democracy in the sixth century BC
was used in the Greek city Chios,
but the boom of democracy was in
the fifth century BC in Athens in
the time of Pericles. The National
Assembly, consisting of all
citizens, deal with all matters of
general interest, enact legislation,
tax liabilities, and often judgments.

6. Contemporary democracy
• France and the US are sometimes
considered the birth place of modern
democracy but the word 'democracy' only
started being used in France after the
Revolution in 1789. The road towards
today's democracy was long, there was
much instability: 2 empires (with Napoleon
I and Napoleon II), 2 monarchies, 5
republics and the Vichy regime during
World War II (with Marshall Pétain). It was
in 1958 that General de Gaulle finally
founded the Fifth Republic, France's
current regime based on revolutionary
ideals: 'Liberty, Equality, Fraternity'.
