Thermal Regulation 2020 in France
RT2020INFRANCE
WHAT IS THE RT 2020 ?
The “RT 2020: Thermal Regulations 2020” also called "Responsible Building
Regulations "(RBR), aims to develop the concept of positive energy buildings
(BEPOS).
It is a goal-oriented regulation which leaves the freedom of design while reducing
the energy consumption. A positive energy building produces more energy than
it uses for its operation. This difference is “smoothed” over a period of one year.
The design of a positive energy habitat generally follows the main principles of the passive house (heating
energy requirements below 15kWh / m².year; very low air barrier; total power consumption inferior to
120kWh / m² .an), with the addition of energy production features: ventilation with heat recovery,
improved thermal insulation, efficient collection of passive solar energy (bioclimatism).
WHAT DIFFERENCES WITH THE RT 2012 ?
Two additional energy consumption areas ” RT 2012 “ takes into account five distinctive uses: cooling,
heating, domestic hot water, lighting and auxiliaries (fans,
pumps, ..). “RT 2020” will also consider new uses such as
consumption of household appliances (computer,
refrigerator, TV set, washing machine ...).
The embodied energy of materials and devices will also be
considered. This is the energy needed throughout the life
cycle of a product (for manufacture, transport,
implementation, end of life).
The individual placed at the centre of the RT
2020
With the implementation of “RT2020”, individuals and
citizens will be educated to use less energy. Indeed,
technological development that reduces the energy
consumption of equipments is not enough to reach the
threshold of "zero energy waste" (efficient management of
uses, of consumption of home appliances and computer
equipment, of mobility ...).
The change in our behaviour will allow to comply with RT
2020 by consuming less and more efficiently.
The well-being of the inhabitants “RT 2020 “ will take greater account of the well-being of the
inhabitants: the indoor air quality (IAQ) and sound insulation
should be anticipated by the use of appropriate building
materials (healthy natural materials ) and thus better
managed.
