1. H O S P I T A L S C E N E
THE DESCENT-MISE EN
SCENE
2. LOCATION
• The location that the
scenes are set is a hospital
this is shown by using a
dimly lit close-up of a heart
rate monitor and a wide
shot of Sarah standing
bewildered in a dimly lit
hospital corridor. The
colour of the location
makes the setting seem
dark and pessimistic
3. COSTUME/ MAKE-UP
• In the scene the costumes and make-
up are important they shows the
location through symbolic links and
influence your feeling towards the
characters
• The first screenshot is of Sarah's dream
of Jessica and she is wearing a white
clothing to show her innocence. The
lighting is dark however the orange
lighting shows the strength and passion
that Sarah has to want to see her
daughter again.
• The second screenshot shows Sarah in
hospital clothes with a cut on her
eyebrow shows that that she has been
injured enough that she needed to go
to hospital to make her look weak. It
does this because the costume and
make-up are visual links to her weakness
4. PROPS
• The props are important because they
are used as visual links to the feelings
and locations of the three scene
without the actors having to say
anything.
• Firstly the cake symbolizes the sad fact
that her daughter will never be able to
receive a birthday cake ever again
• Second of all the heartbeat monitor to
establish the location is a hospital is flat
lining to possibly suggest that Sarah
never even wakes because she dies or
it is foreshadowing that she will die in
the end
• Third of all the hospital bed being
pushed by the hospital employee is
used to further confirm the location is a
hospital
5. LIGHTING AND COLOUR
• The lighting and colour of the lighting
are extremely important in any form of
media because they subtly convey
feelings to influence the audience
and manipulate their feelings.
• In the first picture, from the second
scene of the clip, the lighting is
extremely dark with a hint of dark
green, the dark green inspiring fear
and jealousy. The encroaching
darkness onto the already dark green
symbolizes death which eventually
reaches her suggesting that she is
dead or will die
• The second screenshot is brighter
accompanied with an arc shot, it
shows a moment of realization where
all darkness has turned into pure and
innocent sadness as Sarah cries in the
arm of Beth.
6. MOVEMENT/ ACTING
• The acting/ movement of any
movie is the main part of all
movies it is what portrays the
story so the better the acting the
better the movie as it gets the
narrative across more
effectively.
• However in my opinion the
acting in the movie was lacking
and I didn’t find as interesting as
it could have been.
• This picture from the hospital
scene is after the crash and it
had some of the best acting
than the rest of the film because
I was able to at least get excited
about this scene. I really felt
scared and sad for Sarah
because of how well Shauna
MacDonald portrayed the
character of Sarah
