The document discusses how lighting, location, costumes, and props are used in the film The Descent to create suspense and drama. Lighting in the underground cave settings adds to the tension and unease. Changes in location at the beginning are appreciated by viewers to understand the context. Costumes for the daughter suggest she may be a ghost. Props like a birthday cake represent impending death of characters and foreshadow future events. Overall, these elements of mise-en-scene manipulate the atmosphere and elicit strong emotions from the audience.
2. Lighting
When mentioning lighting in a movie like the Descent it’s
unnatural for the viewer to be familiar with lighting due to
the movie only being inside a unearthed cave where there
is no natural light to be seen by anyone and isn’t familiar to
the viewer and it’s hard for them to adjust.
In these four screenshots we can see the multiple scenes
where lighting creates the biggest impacts, and by doing
this it adds more suspense and extra drama to certain
scenes. The first frame shows us the viewer of what's to
come and what will happen to Sarah and here fate the
lighting gives more a dark setting to the scene that the
young daughter has disappeared for good. The second
and third scene are the greatest example of of dramatic
lighting and pathetic fallacy where we see the way Sarah is
running through the corridor the light gives the effect that
she is running from someone or something straight into the
final scene where it gives the same effect as the ending
where it’s hard for the user to adjust.
3. Location
This is just like lighting due to the fact that the movie is based
around one area and Is hard for the viewer to tell the difference
in and would be hard for people to understand. However when
the movie has a change of venue at the start the viewer
appreciates it more when viewing the whole movie and really
adds more to the scene. The first frame location is impossible for
the viewer to understand and makes the viewer question where
the daughter is and could lead to multiple theory's where people
could debate that they’re both in purgatory. The last two frames
give the impression death and fear in the hospital and gives off
the that the main character will be dead or terminally ill and a
grim nature.
4. Costume
The costumes in the Descent are really that
noticeable on the characters, however they aren’t
really noticeable except the daughters in the cake
scene. Due to the reason that she has different
clothing from the car scene and is more like a
dressing gown or old Victorian clothes which could
give the impression that she might be a ghost and
makes the audience weary of what she is now.
However in the second scene the gives no feedback
to the audience except the simple fact that she is in
the hospital and is unfamiliar with the current setting.
5. Props
The props in the Descent are only really used
to add impact in specific scenes and to add
forgettable drama which only effect that it
relates to someone's death and how they might
effect someone's else's actions later on the
movie. The first frame just gives the impression
that cake could represent that her time is up
and her final moments are a head of her and
the final 5 photos represent the five friends
whom will die. The second frame just gives the
impression that she could be dead or a
foreshadow to her demise when the non
dietetic sound appears giving off a warning flag
to the viewer to be pre-pared and how you
have to wary for each character.
6. Mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scene gives the impression that anyone can be killed off or die at
any second and these key things give the viewer a great amount or fear
and tension where people can lose them selves in the movie. Another
point is the atmosphere where it gives everyone in the audience the same
feeling and emotions of the characters and protagonists.
Diegetic and Non Diegetic- is basically sound however ones physically
people talking another is noises that come from someone else. With non-diegetic
it can come from anything and can be anything including narrative
and are noises that don’t come from the person who is being filmed. But
with Diegetic it’s the physical and verbal noise coming from the person it
is.
