Mise-en-scene refers to everything presented to the viewer in a film or theatrical production, including props, costumes, lighting, sets, and performance. There are six key areas of mise-en-scene: color, costume, props, set/location, performance, and lighting. These elements are used intentionally to convey meaning and create mood, such as using the color red to suggest danger or green to imply envy. Costumes can reveal information about a character's social class and lifestyle. Props are incorporated in a scene to establish atmosphere, like using candles and roses to set a romantic mood for a first date or a dark room with chairs to create suspense during a police interrogation.
