The Descent Film Review
1. The
Descent .
In this review i will tell you about the story the best bits and why i
thought it was good.
The first half of the gory, adventurous film is quite relaxed with scenes of
the group of friends rafting. We also find out that a secret relationship is
going on between Juno & Sarah's husband, Paul although Sarah does
not see this but her friend does and tells Sarah to carry on home to not
spot these secret feelings in the group. Unfortunately for the cheating
husband, Paul is killed in a horrific car accident including her little girl,
Jessica. I will let you see the experience for yourself…
A short 20 minute year into the movie the girls decide to go on a cave
exploration unaware that it hast been discovered or what lies beneath
the darkness. The director Neil Marshall, director of other good films
such as; Dog Soldiers with its jaw dropping content. He has also done
just as good in ‘The Descent’ with his camera angles and lighting skills.
The second half of the film is the gory, jump-scare part of the film that
starts to make hairs stand up on the back of your neck. but the fight
against nature can be just as gripping, the first 10 minutes after
exploring this forbidden cave the team have to get through a tight gap in
the wall. Sarah is the last to get through this gap and the space she is
climbing through starts to be filled in by collapsing rocks almost trapping
Sarah for ever in a panic and the help of her best-friend to keep her
calm in such an intense moment to avoid entrapment for eternity. After
this close call the team wants out and ask Juno for the way out, Juno
tells them that the cave has not yet been discovered. The team is forced
to find away out…
Desperate and short on supplies, Holly unaware of the giant fall which
she thinks is the way out and snaps her shin bone and is left in
unbelievable pain the group must help her snapped shin temporarily.
Sarah carries on to see what she thinks is a man but she only sees the
silhouette. Desperate for help she tells the group but they don't believe

2. her. They decide to split up to cover more of the cave. After searching so
far into the cave what Sarah thinks is a man are creatures that have
never been seen before and go to kill the group. After this scene the
crawlers are killed but holly has had her neck ripped out. The action in
this film also keeps the film going so it does not get boring waiting for
just a usual horror death of a stupid decision of going to your death.
Unaware of the crawlers left, Juno turns around and stabs Rebecca this
shocks us all as we think they're going to not kill each other but only by
the evil. Juno separated from Sarah and beth searches further on
through the cave. It then goes to Sarah who is searching through the
caves using her cam corder. The use of the camera makes use feel like
we are living it in first person. The night vision only sees so much which
allows us to be unprepared to what is going to happen like jump scares.
Further throughout the movie Sarah has gone rogue after the death of
beth which happens earlier, one of the most goriest parts of the film is
when she falls into a pool of blood. Neil Marshall is not scared to use
blood as the walls are plastered in it through out the film he even leaves
clues through out the film which are quite clever such as the flares that
symbol blood and the secret relationship. The group has been cut down
to two. Sarah has seen Rebecca just about living and tells her that juno
has done this. Sarah meets Juno in the cave while being overcome by
the crawler knowing that juno has killed Rebecca she also knows about
the secret between Paul and her. She only knows this because Paul had
a saying he said to Sarah which Juno also has a necklace with this
saying this is one of the famous clues he uses. In anger, Sarah stabs
juno for the crawlers to feast and runs to her escape.
Neil marshall shocks us all by having it go back to the cave with Sarah
waking up telling us this was a dream and she is stuck forever fighting
against the cave…
Overall, It is a good movie it has its scares in the film and gory moments.
The action scenes stop it from getting boring. It isn't like a usual horror
when one survives at escapes the massacre he leaves them in there to
suffer making you feel like you are having this experience. He has also
left the secret relationship in which is not forgotten and comes up again
in the movie.
Personally i would give it a 4 star as it has good techniques and key
things to the horror genre.
