3. The song People move, people move From location to location All around the earth Yea, from nation to nation GPS, an absolute destination Or relative, 4 blocks north of that old gas station People get to a place - a unique congregation Of absolute points Like your home or train station The place means much more than a dot on the floor That’s only longitude and latitude We’re so much more We want to move to unlikely regions Yea, once harsh locations Like Las Vegas or Dubai Those places? Why? ...are changed by human environmental interaction Yea, they develop the landscape Allowing humans there to thrive So, grab the rivers and block the sky People move, people move Away from difficult regions Like deserts and tundras That have difficult seasons They move to easier areas for practical reasons Like grasslands, where food can grow and be eaten People define Areas with similar glitches Based upon their common common characteristics But I move to regions, yea for all you cynics That are difficult, at best For less practical reasons We want to move to unlikely regions Yea, once harsh locations Like Las Vegas or Dubai Those places? Why? ...are changed by human environmental interaction Yea, they develop the landscape Allowing humans there to thrive So, grab the rivers and block the sky What makes you move? Just tell me why How do you move, and should I try? What route would I take? And if you move, I’ll say goodbye I’ll be changing this place in time I’ll build a road, a house And over there, my water supply We want to move to unlikely regions Yea, once harsh locations Like Las Vegas or Dubai Those places? Why? ...are changed by human environmental interaction Yea, they develop the landscape Allowing humans there to thrive So, grab the rivers and block the sky Some LaLaLaLa’s that only every good song has
4. What do the Lyrics Mean People move, people move From location to location All around the earth Yea, from nation to nation GPS, an absolute destination Or relative, 4 blocks north of that old gas station People get to a place - a unique congregation Of absolute points Like your home or train station The place means much more than a dot on the floor That’s only longitude and latitude We’re so much more This verse begins by focusing the first 2 themes of geography around human movement, since the 5 themes of geography are all relative to human existence and how we change the earth or adapt to it. The first theme of geography is location. There are two types of location; absolute and relative. Your absolute location is something that can be pinpointed by using numbers (GPS). Coordinates will tell you precisely where you are standing on the earth at any moment. When you take a step forward, your absolute location has changed. Your relative location is less precise and refers to your location in relation to something/someone else. For instance, I am 4 blocks north of an old gas station . That is my location, relative to the gas station. The second theme of geography is place. A place is somewhere that is made up of a number of absolute locations (a series of GPS locations) such as your school or your house - or a train station that you go to. A place has a unique set of attributes that sets it apart from just a random absolute location in the desert. There are many things about your house that make it unique, and because of that, your house is a place (way better than just a dot on the floor) .
5. What do the Lyrics Mean We want to move to unlikely regions Yea, once harsh locations Like Las Vegas or Dubai Those places? Why? ...are changed by human environmental interaction Yea, they develop the landscape Allowing humans there to thrive So, grab the rivers and block the sky The chorus is about the tendency for humans to take unlikely regions around the planet and develop them into places where people actually want to go. Many regions, such as deserts, are places that are uninhabitable for humans because they lack water, building materials, food, and fertile soil. However, through Human Environmental Interaction (5th theme of geography), humans change the environment of some of these regions to make them livable. Two examples of very popular destinations that were built in the uninhabitable desert are Las Vegas and Dubai. Now that these places are built in unlikely regions, it makes people want visit or move there. The landscape has been changed and developed so that people can live there. These places have many buildings and have access to water - 2 critical human environmental developments required for people to be able to live.
6. What do the Lyrics Mean People move, people move Away from difficult regions Like deserts and tundras That have difficult seasons They move to easier areas for practical reasons Like grasslands, where food can grow and be eaten People define Areas with similar glitches Based upon their common common characteristics But I move to regions, yea for all you cynics That are difficult, at best For less practical reasons This verse is all about the 3rd theme of geography, regions. The earth is broken up into 12 regions in order to help us understand and compartmentalize big areas around the globe. Every area on the earth can fit into one of 12 regional descriptions (such as grasslands), based on the characteristics of that area. For example there are many tropical rain forests on the planet - any area that exceeds 120 inches of rain every year is considered a rain forest. Deserts are hot and dry, tundras are cold and frozen, etc. People move to certain regions based upon their desires to live one way or another. If you want to grow crops and have 4 seasons to your year, you would live in a grassland region.
7. What do the Lyrics Mean What makes you move? Just tell me why How do you move, and should I try? What route would I take? And if you move, I’ll say goodbye I’ll be changing this place in time I’ll build a road, a house And over there, my water supply This is all about the 4th theme of geography, movement, and why people move from location to location, place to place, or region to region. Because human beings are so different, there are many reasons why some people want to move to and from locations, places or regions...common reasons are temperature, clean air, open spaces, and urbanization. Also, there are many people who decide to stay in a location, place, or region that is not perfect in order to “improve” it or change it. This is called Human Environmental Interaction. People do this by building houses, roads, and creating a water supply in order to thrive...and potentially create an environment for others to move there as well.
