Landscapes ! <ul><li>A landscape is a large extension of land that we can see from a certain place. </li></ul><ul><li>It is made up of: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The land </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The plants </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The houses </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The roads </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The animals </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The farms </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>And much, MUCH more! </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. Natural vs. Artificial <ul><li>Natural Elements of a landscape are elements that nature makes. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ex.) Land can be flat, have hills, water, animals, & plants. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Artificial Elements are elements made by people. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ex.) Buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, farmland. </li></ul></ul>Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California !
  5. 6. There are different types of landscapes, too ! <ul><li>Natural Landscape: When are MORE natural elements , than artifical elements. </li></ul><ul><li>Humanised Landscape: When are MORE artificial elements , than natural elements. </li></ul>
  6. 9. What does Coastal and Inland mean ? <ul><li>A landscape can be coastal if it is near the sea. </li></ul><ul><li>A landscape can be inland if it is far from the sea. </li></ul>
  7. 12. Dry?! Wet?!! <ul><li>Dry landscape: When there is very little water or plants and trees. </li></ul><ul><li>Wet landscape: When there is a lot of water, plants, and trees. </li></ul>
  8. 13. What natural elements can be found in this picture? Name at least three. <ul><li>Answer: There are trees, plants, water, mountains, hills, animals in water, etc. </li></ul>
  9. 14. <ul><li>Answer: Humanised ! </li></ul><ul><li>** This was a picture I took in Shanghai, China. </li></ul>Is this a natural landscape or humanised landscape? What artificial elements does it have? Name one. Answer: There are boats, buildings, people in the boats, etc.

  12. 17. RELIEF ! <ul><li>Relief is all the different types of land. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ex.) Mountains, valleys, plains, plateaus, beaches, cliffs, etc. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Land near the sea: COASTAL RELIEF </li></ul><ul><li>Land far from the sea: INLAND RELIEF </li></ul>

  14. 19. Forms of COASTS <ul><li>The coast is the part of land that is next to the sea. </li></ul><ul><li>Forms: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>High & rocky coasts </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Low & sandy coasts </li></ul></ul><ul><li>** This makes up the COASTAL RELIEF. </li></ul>
  15. 20. Coast Relief ! <ul><li>The coast relief is made up of different landscapes. </li></ul><ul><li>Beaches! </li></ul><ul><ul><li>LOW lands near the sea. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Covered in SAND or ROCKS. </li></ul>
  16. 21. Cliffs ! <ul><li>Cliffs are lands near the sea, but they are HIGH and ROCKY. </li></ul>
  17. 22. Capes ! <ul><li>A cape is a piece of land that goes out into the sea. </li></ul>
  18. 23. Gulf ! <ul><li>A gulf is a small part of the sea that goes into the land. </li></ul>
  19. 24. Bays & Coves ! <ul><li>A small gulf is a bay. </li></ul><ul><li>A small bay is a cove. </li></ul>
  20. 25. Islands ! <ul><li>A portion of land that has water all around it. </li></ul>
  21. 26. Archipelalgo ! <ul><li>An archipelalgo is a group of islands near each other. </li></ul>
  22. 27. Peninsula & Isthmus <ul><li>A peninsula is a piece of land that has water on all but ONE side. </li></ul><ul><li>The side that connects the peninsula with the land is the isthmus. </li></ul>
  23. 28. Inland Relief ! <ul><li>It has plains, plateaus, mountain ranges, mountains, & valleys. </li></ul><ul><li>A plain is a large piece of land that is HORIZONTAL and FLAT. </li></ul>
  24. 29. Plateaus ! <ul><li>A plateau is also a plain, but a little ELEVATED. </li></ul>
  25. 30. Mountains ! <ul><li>A very HIGH area of land. </li></ul><ul><li>Mountains are formed by its sides, called slopes. </li></ul><ul><li>The slopes go to the TOP of the mountain , called the summit. </li></ul><ul><li>The LOW part of the mountain is called the foot. </li></ul>
  26. 31. Mountain Range <ul><li>If one group of mountains is near another group of mountains , it makes a mountain range. </li></ul>
  27. 32. Mountain System <ul><li>When a lot of mountain ranges are near each other, they form a mountain system. </li></ul>
  28. 33. Valleys ! <ul><li>A valley is the low land BETWEEN MOUNTAINS . </li></ul><ul><li>You can usually see rivers in valleys. </li></ul>
  29. 34. What causes landscapes to change? <ul><li>Nature changes landscapes! </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ex.) rain, snow, wind, earthquakes, etc. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Some changes are slow. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ex.) Rain, rivers, wind, or sea can make rocks erode or move objects on the ground from one place to another. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Some changes are fast. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ex.) Earthquakes, floods, volcano eruptions, etc. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>** These are considered NATURAL CATASTROPHES!** </li></ul>
