This document discusses the science behind common playground equipment:
- See-saws operate using the principle of levers, specifically a first-class lever. A lever helps lift weights using less effort.
- Swings operate using the principle of a pendulum, swinging back and forth due to a hanging mass.
- Merry-go-rounds create centripetal force, which pulls objects toward the center, and centrifugal force, which pushes objects outward.
7. DO YOU KNOW THE SCIENCE BEHIND
THEM…..
• If yes ; what is it?
• If no; let’s learn …..
8. See-saw is a simple machine. A simple machine
makes work easier.
Lever
See saw is a lever. A lever is a
machine consisting of a beam
or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed
hinge or fulcrum. It helps to lift
weights with less effort. They
are of three types.
9. Classes of levers
First class levers have the fulcrum
placed between the load and effort
as in the see saw .
Second class levers have the load
between the effort and the
fulcrum as in a wheelbarrow.
10. Third class levers have the effort
between the load and the fulcrum
as in a pair of tweezers Swing is a pendulum.
• A pendulum is a mass that
hangs from the end of a
road or string, and swings
back and forth.
• The swings on a playground
swing set is a simple
pendulum , because it only
moves back and forth.
11. Merry – Go -Round
• Centripetal force: A
force which acts on a
body moving in a
circular path and is
directed towards the
centre around which
the body is moving.
• Centrifugal force : A
force that causes an
object moving in a
circular path to move
out and away from the
centre of its path.
12. Slide & Roller coaster
• Energy: It is the ability to
do work.
• Potential energy: Energy
stored in an object as the
result of its vertical position or
height.
• Kinetic energy: Energy which a
body possesses by virtue of
being in motion.
• Friction: Friction is a force that
holds back the movement of a
sliding object .Friction is a
force that acts in an opposite
direction to movement.
• The cars on a roller coaster are
not self-powered. Instead , the
car is pulled up with a chain
along the lift hill to the first
peak of the coaster track .The
potential energy accumulated
by the rise in height is used to
complete the circuit.
• The cars of a roller coaster
reach their maximum kinetic
energy when at the bottom of
their path.
