1. Media films pitch information:
Film idea 1:
The working title for my shortfilm is "M.O.B- Money orBlood?"Itis a ten minute long action thriller,
surrounding a young mansdesperateattemptto surviveafterheis targeted by a hit man afterfailing
to repay money heunwittingly borrowed froman organised crimegang during a nightout. The
tagline for"M.O.B"is "Are you paying with cash or yourlife?", capturing theessenceof theplot in a
sentence. The film beginswith theyoung man walking to a shop, then realising he doesn'thaveany
money to buy his girlfriend a birthday present, which heneedsto do as he is going to see her in
literally 5 minutestime. He sees a sharply dressed man leaning againsta wall on his own,and
decides to explain his situation to him and askto borrow somemoney. To his surprise, theman
agreesand gives himmuch morecash than he asked for, telling him that"There's no need to
exchangenumbers,I'msureI'll see you around."Bemused butrelived that thereseems to be no
deadlinefor his payment, theyoung man walkshome.Act2begins with the young man walking to
worka weekor so later, only to heara familiar voice frombehind him.He turnsaround to see the
mysteriousman heborrowed money fromleaning againsta classic car, dressed in a leather jacket
and wearing aviatorsunglasses.Aftersomeintroductionsand verbalsparring,themysteriousman
getsdown to businessand demandshismoney back.Intimidated, theyoung man emptieshiswallet
butdoesnot havehalf the amountheborrowed on him, bringing thefilm to its final act. Enraged by
the lack of money, themysteriousman startsto beat up the young man,and beforelong a full on fist
fightis taking placein thestreet. The young man putsup a good fight, butthe otherman (by now
clearly somesort of professionalassassin) comesouton top, leaving theyoung man bruised and
bloodied on the pavement.Theassassin pullsouta gun and shootshim, beforestrolling off and
getting in his car, wherehe makesa phonecall to his superior, telling him "yeah he paid", drawing
the film to a close. Evidently fromthe abovesynopsis, thereareonly really two charactersin "Blood
Money";theinnocentyoung man who perhapssomewhatnaively borrowsa largesumof money
froma mysteriousstrangerand doesn'tpay himback, and theaforementioned man of mystery who
is later revealed to be assassin working fora criminal gang.
The target audience for "M.O.B" would be fans of quality action thrillers such as the Bond,
Bourne and Mission: Impossible films, as well as films that feature unique and memorable
assassins such as Pulp Fiction, and Mob movies such as The Godfather and Good fellas. This
target audience would be predominately males aged between 16- 50, ranging from a D -B
on the NRS Social Demographic Scale and fitting with the "Mainstream" and "Struggler"
profiles from the 4 C'S scale, as people from all classes and backgrounds enjoy films that are
exciting and, to a certain degree, escapist, as "M.O.B" will be. Furthermore, action thrillers
stereo-typically appeal to men more than women, and I believe people of all ages enjoy
watching films like mine, hence the broad age bracket. I will reach this audience by including
a thrilling, fast-paced and rather brutal fight scene as the centrepiece and finale of "M.O.B”,
as this will appeal to the people who enjoy watching action scenes because they find them
exciting, as will the classic car and stylish outfits that the assassin uses to make his point, as
these are conventions of many action thrillers, such as the iconic James Bond films.
2. In terms of form and style, "M.O.B" will be shot on digital cameras, as they are the most
efficient and readily available quality cameras that I can use to make my film look good. I
will try and focus on cinematography and lighting for the first act especially, and aim to use
a variety of camera angels, rapid editing and fairly believable makeup to make the fight
realistic and exciting. The style that I'm going for is the realistic and gritty but simultaneously
entertaining and stylish, like the Bourne and Mission: Impossible films; they are believable to
a certain extent but also have their own unique style and are thrilling to watch.
As for where M.O.B" sits on the marketplace, I think it would be popular with the general
public because it is exciting and escapist, but also praised by critics for its cinematography,
acting and slickly edited fight sequence. I'm not sure how well it would do at festivals, due to
its simplicity and action orientated plot, however I do think there is scope for a prequel
exploring the assassins past as he will be an interesting, mysterious and strangely
charismatic character who audiences will hopefully like to see more of .
Here is a draft script for the confrontation and fight which make up the finale of M.O.B.
Media film draft script:
EXT. The YOUNG MAN from the previous scene is walking to work
via a backstreet. He is surprised to see the MYSTERIOUS MAN
from the previous scene in front of him, leaning against a
classic car, shirtless, wearing a leather jacket and aviator
sunglasses as part of his ultra-stylish outfit.
MYSTERIOUS MAN: (Almost comically) We meet again.
YOUNG MAN: (Bemused) Yeah, er, here we are. Um, can I sort out
the money with you later, I’ve got to get to work and I’ll
have to pop to the bank and -
MYSTERIOUS MAN: (Suddenly very serious) No.
YOUNG MAN: Excuse me?
3. MYSTERIOUS MAN: (Slow and sinister) I said no.
YOUNG MAN: Look, I’ve got to get to work and then-
MYSTERIOUS MAN: (Blocking the path) You’re not going anywhere,
sunshine
YOUNG MAN: (Worried now) Yes, I am, now get out my way and
I’ll pay you back later.
MYSTERIOUS MAN: (Getting closer) You’ll pay me back now.
YOUNG MAN: I would but I don’t have the money on me, so I’ll
go to the bank later and-
MYSTERIOUS MAN: You got a wallet, sweet cheeks?
YOUNG MAN: Yeah, but-
MYSTERIOUS MAN: Get it out.
A look
MYSTERIOUS MAN: I said get it out. Now.
The young man hesitates
MYSTERIOUS MAN: (In a sudden explosion of anger) NOW!
Scared and shocked by this, the young man gets his wallet out,
holding it up as if it will save him.
4. MYSTERIOUS MAN: (Like he’s talking to a dog or small child)
There’s a good boy, now let’s open it up, can you manage that?
YOUNG MAN: (Angry and scared) Yes. Look I don’t have enough
money in here at the moment, that’s why I was going to-
MYSTERIOUS MAN: Believe it or not, I couldn’t give a shit.
Empty what’s in there on the floor.
YOUNG MAN: (Glares at him) No, this is out of order, who do
you think you are?
MYSTERIOUS MAN: I think I am one of the finest contract
killers in the United Kingdom. Now empty your wallet.
YOUNG MAN: (Really scared now) OK, ok, here we go, there it
is, that’s all I’ve got
He empties all his money on the floor
MYSTERIOUS MAN: Don’t mind if I didly
He inspects how much money there is
MYSTERIOUS MAN: Hmmmm, doesn’t seem to be enough here.
(Slowly) What a shame.
YOUNG MAN: (half scream) It’s in my bank, I can get it late-
MYSTERIOUS MAN: You won’t have to.
A look
5. MYSTERIOUS MAN: You’ll pay me right here, right now.
YOUNG MAN: (frozen in terror) I can’t
MYSTERIOUS MAN: Oh but you can. (Moving closer) Yes, you can
pay me (sudden switch into shouting) with your life!
As he says life, the MYSTERIOUS MAN punches the YOUNG MAN in
the face. A brutal fight ensues, but it ends with the YOUNG
MAN bloodied and battered, lying on the floor in a semi-
conscious state as the MYSTERIOUS MAN stands over him.
MYSTERIOUS MAN: Every time I do this, the boss always asks me
“Did he pay in money or blood?”. They usually find the money,
but this time I can tell him, he paid in blood.
As he says this, the MYSTERIOUS MAN takes out a gun and shoots
the YOUNG MAN in the head, before strolling off to his car.
Film idea 2:
The working title for my filmis “Traitor “. “ Traitor “is a 10-15 minute long action thriller
surrounding a British secret agent who must race to clear his name after he is framed for
treason by a mole within MI6. The tagline for “Traitor “is “Can you trust the truth?”
capturing how in the shadowy world of espionage and corruption, no-one really knows who
to trust and what to believe. There are two central characters in my film, protagonist Jack
Steel, the skilled British secret agent who is framed for treason by the antagonist, Craig
Simm, who is revealed to be a mole within MI6 working for a terrorist organisation intent on
6. destroying the secret service. Other characters include Steel’s boss Neil Armitage, and other
agents that work with Steel and Simm.
The first act begins as Steel arrives at the MI6 headquarters, where all the agents are given
a debrief stating that the identities of a large proportion of their agents have been leaked by
an unknown source, potentially someone “in this very room”. Neil Armitage, the head of
MI6, calls Steel into his office for a private discussion, in which he warns him to “trust no-
one”. Steel leaves the office and all the agents continue with their work, however soon
afterwards Craig Simm knocks on Armitage’s door, and once inside tells him that he’s been
“doing some research into the source of the encryption device” and says he has traced the
leak back to “files on Jack Steel’s computer”. Armitage is shocked by this, and asks to see
solid proof, which is provided when Simm shows him a screenshot of corrupted files with
Steel’s name on them on his laptop. As a result of this, Armitage calls Steel into his office,
explains the allegations against himand then fires him, warning him that “further
investigations will take place”. In disbelief, Steel leaves for home and decides to find out
who has framed him, bringing the film into its second act. He gets home and writes down
all the agents who he thinks could have put their corrupted memory stick into his computer,
a list of about 10 names including Simms. He then thinks about who has been acting
suspiciously lately, a list of 5, and finally who had spoken to Armitage recently before his
framing, leaving him with one name; Craig Simm. He decides to follow Simm to work the
next morning to see if he can find any proof of his potential corruption, however Simm is
aware that he’s being followed and doubles back, coming up behind Steel and bringing the
film into its third act. Steel and Simm verbally confront each other, eventually leading to
Simms’s admission that he did frame Steel for treason, because he is indeed a mole working
for a terrorist organisation called ANARCH . Simm then declares that Armitage “will never
know the truth” because he’s going to kill Steel, leading to a brutal fight between them in
the street, ending with Steel just about coming out on top. Steel then proceeds to go back
to the MI6 headquarters, where he shows Armitage an audio recording of Simm admitting
his corruption, leading to his reinstatement into the secret service, drawing the filmto a
close.
The target audience for “Traitor “would be 16-50 year old males who are fans of quality
action thrillers such as the Bond, Bourne and Mission: Impossible franchises, which are
realistic to an extent but also action packed and incredibly exciting. This audience would
range from a D-B on the NRS Social Demographic Scale, and fit with the “mainstream” and
“struggler” profiles on the 4C’s scale, because people from a wide variety of classes and
backgrounds enjoy action thrillers, as they are escapist to a certain extent, appealing to
those who struggle and want to be taken out of their lives for a while. The style I am going
for with “Traitor “is one that resembles the franchises listed above, the kind of film that is
very well shot, acted and edited, combining to create a sublime, suspenseful, believable and
excessively entertaining film, an action film with plot and characters worth investing in, as
opposed to some types of action films that are only watchable because of the set pieces and
7. nothing else. To achieve this I will use decent digital cameras to filmwith, allowing me to
film in a way that makes the final cut of “ Traitor“ look interesting and cinematic, get very
capable actors to star in my film, making the characters believable, and edit it (the fight
especially) quickly and sharply, making it fast-paced, realistic and exiting to watch. In terms
of where “ Traitor “stands on the marketplace, I definitely think there is scope for a sequel,
surrounding Steels attempt at preventing some sort of major atrocity, though I’m not sure it
would be a huge success at festivals because of there have been lot of films of a similar
nature made before it.
Draft script for “Traitor”:
Media film idea 2 draft script:
Ext. A grimy backstreet en route to MI6. JACK STEEL and CRAIG
SIMM stand facing each other, staring at one another with a
visible distrust.
SIMM: What are you doing here, traitor?
STEEL: I’m not the traitor here.
SIMM: And what’s that supposed to mean?
STEEL: You know what it means.
SIMM: I really don’t.
8. STEEL: I’ve noticed you acting suspiciously lately. Slipping
off half an hour early every day, regular trips to the toilet.
I wonder what you were doing when we couldn’t see you.
SIMM: (Condescending tone) Going to the toilet.
STEEL: Your desk is only a couple away from mine. You could
have easily put your corrupted memory stick into my computer.
SIMM: And why would I want to do that?
STEEL: Because you’re not who you say you are. Because you’re
the mole who leaked all the Intel, you’re the one who framed
me for treason!
A look
STEEL: Tell me I’m wrong.
SIMM: (Clapping slowly and sarcastically) Well done, your
right. I am the man who framed you. I am the mole working for
ANARCH. I am the real traitor. But it doesn’t matter, really,
because Armitage will never know. No-one will ever know the
truth about me.
STEEL: We’ll see about that.
STEEL and SIMM proceed to fight- it is long and brutal, but
STEEL eventually comes out on top, knocking SIMM out and
limping out of shot.
