FADE IN:
SCENE 1:
Ext. Early evening.
A YOUNG MAN stands outside a small corner shop, lost in
thought. He takes his wallet out and checks its contents-
it’s empty. A look of frustration can be seen on his face.
He thinks for a while, then decides to look for anyone who
looks like they might lend him some money. Everyone is
either in a rush, unpleasant or preoccupied with someone
else, except for one MYSTERIOUS MAN, who is stylishly
dressed in a leather jacket and wearing aviator sunglasses
despite the descending darkness. The YOUNG MAN finally
decides to approach him and asks:
YOUNG MAN
Excuse me, I was just wondering if you had any spare
money I could borrow, you see I really need to buy
my girlfriend a birthday present because I’m seeing
her in literally five minutes and I don’t have any
money on me right now, and ,yeah if you did happen
to have any-
MYSTERIOUS MAN
I just cracked a slip n slide on a 405.
YOUNG MAN
What did you just say?
MYSTERIOUS MAN
What did you just say? You would like to borrow
money from me? How much?
YOUNG MAN
Er about £20, maybe £25, I’d pay it all back
tomorrow, but if not don’t worry-
MYSTERIOUS MAN
Oh but I do. How could I possibly turn you away,
tell you I don’t have any money to spare when…
He takes his wallet out dramatically.
3. 3
MYSTERIOUS MAN
I do.
YOUNG MAN
Well, if you’re sure then that’d be great and I’ll
pay everything back tomorrow afternoon, (takes his
phone out) if you give me your number then I can
call you when I’m ready and I can meet you here?
MYSTERIOUS MAN
Take the money.
The YOUNG MAN takes about £20 from the MYSTERIOUS
MAN’S wallet.
YOUNG MAN
Thank you so much for this, you’re a lifesaver.
MYSTERIOUS MAN
Under his breath
We’ll see about that
The MYSTERIOUS MAN strolls off without another word.
The YOUNG MAN shouts after him:
YOUNG MAN
Okay, I guess I’ll see you around then?
The MYSTERIOUS MAN spins around with alarming comic effect.
MYSTERIOUS MAN
I suspect you might.
A knowing smile slowly forms on his face. He takes one
excruciatingly long look at the YOUNG MAN before spinning
back around and strolling off.
The YOUNG MAN is left standing with the money in his hand,
thinking about what has just happened. A brief look of
worry can be seen on his face but he decides that the
MYSTERIOUS MAN is just a little quirky and smiles to
himself, before walking into the shop.
4. 4
Fade to black.
FADE IN:
SCENE 2:
EXT. Mid-morning. The YOUNG MAN is walking to work via a
backstreet. He is surprised to see the MYSTERIOUS MAN from
the previous scene in front of him, leaning against a
classic car, shirtless, wearing a leather jacket and
aviator sunglasses as part of his ultra-stylish outfit.
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(Almost comically)
We meet again.
YOUNG MAN:
(Bemused)
Yeah, er, here we are. Um, can I sort out the money with
you la
ter, I’ve got to get to work and I’ll have to pop to the
bank and -
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(Suddenly very serious)
No.
YOUNG MAN:
Excuse me?
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(Slow and sinister)
I said no.
YOUNG MAN:
Look, I’ve got to get to work and then-
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(Blocking the path)
5. 5
You’re not going anywhere, sunshine.
YOUNG MAN:
(Worried now)
Yes, I am, now get out my way and I’ll pay you back later.
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(Getting closer)
You’ll pay me back now.
YOUNG MAN:
I would but I don’t have the money on me, so I’ll go to the
bank later and-
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
You got a wallet, sweet cheeks?
YOUNG MAN:
Yeah, but-
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
Get it out.
The YOUNG MAN shoots the MYSTERIOUS MAN a look as if to say
“No, I won’t do it”
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
I said get it out. Now.
The young man hesitates
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(In a sudden explosion of anger)
NOW!
Scared and shocked by this, the young man gets his wallet
out, holding it up as if it will save him.
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(Like he’s talking to a dog or small child)
6. 6
There’s a good boy, now let’s open it up, can you manage
that?
YOUNG MAN:
(Angry and scared)
Yes. Look I don’t have enough money in here at the moment,
that’s why I was going to-
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
Believe it or not, I couldn’t give a shit. Empty what’s in
there on the floor.
YOUNG MAN:
(Glaring at him)
No, this is out of order, who do you think you are?
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
I think I am one of the finest MOB hitmen in the United
Kingdom.
Takes out his gun and points it at the young man
Now empty your wallet before I empty my shotgun.
YOUNG MAN:
(Really scared now)
OK, ok, here we go, there it is, that’s all I’ve got
He empties all his money on the floor
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(Putting his gun away)
Don’t mind if I didly
He inspects how much money there is
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
Hmmmm, doesn’t seem to be enough here.
(Slowly)
What a shame.
7. 7
YOUNG MAN:
(The YOUNG MAN is terrified now, and half screams)
It’s in my bank, I can get it late-
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
You won’t have to.
The YOUNG MAN looks at the MYSTERIOUS MAN, shaken by the
previous lines implication. He pleads with his eyes,
desperate to survive.
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
You’ll pay me right here, right now.
YOUNG MAN:
(Frozen in terror)
I can’t
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
Oh but you can.
(Moving closer)
Yes, you can pay me
(Sudden switch into shouting)
With your life!
As he says life, the MYSTERIOUS MAN punches the YOUNG MAN
in the face. A brutal fight ensues, but it ends with the
YOUNG MAN bloodied and battered, lying on the floor in a
semi-conscious state as the MYSTERIOUS MAN stands over him.
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
Not a bad effort, young man. Not bad at all.
You were really quite interesting, compared to the others.
Most of them paid and survived, a couple took a bullet
straight away but you, you fought for life and limb, like a
bull in a ring, cornered but unwilling to give in. I
respect that. If I were feeling kind, I might offer you a
place in the business.
8. 8
(With ironic positivity)
But I’m not!
As he says this, the MYSTERIOUS MAN takes out a gun and
shoots the YOUNG MAN in the head, before strolling off to
his car.
The Rolling Stone’s Sympathy for the Devil begins to play,
gradually rising in volume.
As he gets in, his phone rings. He answers it. It’s his
boss. We cut to the BOSS sat in a darkened room, then
cross-cut between the MYSTERIOUS MAN and the BOSS on their
respective lines.
Boss:
How did he pay?
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
He paid in blood.
Boss:
Caraazy!
MYSTERIOUS MAN:
(Dryly)
He’s been Gnomed.
They both chuckle to themselves for a while, until the BOSS
says:
BOSS:
Right, you’d better be off. There’s a few others we need to
er, Gnome. Good work.
Cut back to The MYSTERIOUS MAN as he hangs up. He drives
away as the music reaches its peak.
FADE OUT:
THE END
