Factors for Economic Growth of West Germany 1945 – 1960 Currently, in the Middle East, millions
of people are fleeing their home's in order to seek asylum from extremist groups who threaten their
way of life. These migrants are moving into stable neighboring nations – mostly Western Europe.
This huge increase in population movement is adding to economic pressures and could potentially
collapse the system. Today, a stabile global economy is heavily reliant on every individual actor –
countries slowly succumbing to volatility and destabilization are a liability to our globe's economic
well being. It is becoming a necessity to look back at our global successes in stabilizing a region's
economy and the factors that lead to these successes. Within the past century, a major reconstruction
and reorganization of an economic system occurred in Germany after WWII. From 1945 to 1960,
West Germany went from an economic money pit to a necessary asset to secure Western
civilization. This paper will discuss and analyze the factors that lead to West Germany becoming the
economic powerhouse of Western Europe, but will not include the effects of East Germany due to
lack of influence. This paper will be separated into several sections to better detail events in

avoid damage. The device could then calculate the space requirements for each parcel in real time,
scan for a suitable empty space in the vehicle, and then indicate where the parcel should be placed,

The world of telecommunications is a dog eat dog world. Marketing and innovation is key. Leading
the pack as America's fastest growing network (*) is none other than T–Mobile. Of course it was not
always this way. With the on boarding of CEO John Legere in 2012, the then small
telecommunications company, skyrocketed to 73 million customers(Feloni, 2016). In 1994 T–
Mobile, with the name of VoiceStream Wireless PCS, was established by John Stanton. Seven years
later it was purchased by Deutsche Telekom AG for a whopping $39 million and rebranded T–
Mobile US the following year. In 2011 T–Mobile was in financial trouble and was looking to be
purchased by AT&T. The deal was struck down by the US Department of Justice because it would
lessen the competition in the market. In early 2012 John Legere became CEO and the rebranding
started. T–Mobile then went on to acquire MetroPCS Communication in October 2012 to broaden
their customer base and increase prepaid service revenue. John Legere then introduced contract–free
pricing in 2013 which then forced the big guys (Verizon and AT&T) to follow suit. Due to their
success, Sprint attempted to acquire the company in 2013 but abandoned the idea due to the fact that
it was unlikely to be approved by the government (Maynes, 2017). In 2016 there were talks of T–

owned by German–based Deutsche Telekom AG and its founder John W. Stanton. T–Mobile is a
cell phone service that provides wireless voice messaging and data services in the United States,
Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands. The company is the fourth–largest wireless carrier in the U.S.

Most Organizations has its weaknesses for T–Mobile, one major weakness would be its lack of
IPhone. Many costumers switch to other companies due to the fact that people want to have the
IPhone, although T–Mobile provides affordable plans it's not enough to keep customers. In order to
minimize this weakness, T–Mobile is offering better service than its competitors on the pre–paid
side, also focusing on increasing revenue from customers while maintaining its credibility as a value
player (Higginbotham, 2012). Another major weakness of T–Mobile is decreasing ARPU. In its
quarterly earning T–Mobile reported loss of 318,000 of its higher–revenue contract customers in the
quarter that ended in December 2010. The main problem is that pre–pay manages to bring in lower
revenues and even fewer because T–Mobile gains were from MVNO partners, who resell T–Mobile
services under their own brand which they end up sharing revenues with (Lunden 2011). Another
issue was shortcoming in the devices, in order to minimize this weakness T–Mobile came out with
more 4G android phones such as the Galaxy S II, HTC one S but what really made T–Mobile gain
back its revenue and receive new customers was when the Galaxy S III, Nexus, and Galaxy Notepad
came out in late 2012.

of print media with minimal use of language. Similar techniques including the use of slogans and
colour are employed in both advertisements to convey their message effectively. Both

electronic transmission was not yet perfected. Threat of entry is low because it requires large capital
investments for a firm to startup and thus it can impede the entry of new firms into the industry.
Lastly, it would be hard to break into the industry because the other firms already have economies to
scale, are further along learning curve, and may have certain airspace leases that blocks out the new
company from potential routes.
Therefore this industry is a pretty good one to already be in, but would be very tough to try and

Unlike FedEx and UPS, Airborne owned the airport that served as its major hub, so it did not pay
landing fees nor face any obstacles to tailoring facilities to its needs. It also built a warehouse in the
airport and leased it to business customers, so as to increase delivery speed. Moreover, the airport's

Airborne relied less on automation and more on humans, in particular part–timers that were paid

greater portion of Airborne's volume consisted of afternoon and second–day deliveries.
In terms of pickup and delivery, Airborne did not maintain retail service centres. It hired contractors
to handle 60% to 65% of its volume, so it could save cost by owning a lesser portion of delivery
trucks. Its courier generally picked up and delivered more parcels per stop than FedEx, reducing
labour costs per unit by 20% and 10% for pickup and delivery respectively.

3. Buyer Power
In the US Express Mail industry, the buyers fit into two segments: businesses and individuals.
Express Mail has become the industry standard in some industries such as banking, consulting and
financial services since the items inside the package had a high ratio of value to weight. Businesses
needed to be able to track the packages and be assured that it arrives on time. That being said,
businesses were often high–volume buyers since the shipping managers identified which firm to
deal with and concentrate the high–volume of shipments to that firm for a particular project or for
the time being. Sales representatives from the firms had to negotiate with stingy shipping managers
who sometimes demanded the upwards of 50% or more discounts. The existence of many large
volume buyers meant that the buyer power is high. Similarly, individuals also held high buyer
power since the Big Three and other second–tier postal services offered largely undifferentiated
services.
On the other hand, the heavy discounts granted for businesses means that the express service saves
the buyer the money. And the quality of service is important to the buyers since the mail contains
valuable information or items. These two factors result in low buyer power.

will study how DHL has gained and achieved in sustaining its position in the logistics sector. To do

There are two different types of competitive advantage: low cost and differentiation. We will
develop them in this part I.
But Firstly, we will start this part by talking about the importance of a deep analysis of the industry's
structure. A deep knowledge of the industry the company is in, is extremely important. The industry
structure is unique and varies from industry to industry of course. It will determine the level of
competitiveness and attraction of the industry. With the Five Forces model (Porter) and PESTEL
(Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, Legal) analysis, the organization will
get a better understanding of the market will allow you to know the requirements for the possible
creation of sustainable competitive advantages and take the right strategic decisions. According to
Porter, to create an efficient competitive strategy, it is important to understand the rules of
competition that determine market attractiveness.
In the five forces model by Porter, four forces will influence the fifth one (see the model on the
right). The bargaining power of suppliers, the bargaining power of customers, the threat of substitute
products and the threat of new entrants will influence the fifth force: the level of competition in the
industry (S.Clegg, C.Carter, M.Kornberger, & J.Scheitzer, 2011).

The industry is defined as the Domestic US Express Mail industry. This includes overnight and
second day delivery. In order to assess the attractiveness of the industry, a Porters' Five Forces
analysis has been conducted as follows.
Rivalry
The industry consists of three major players and six second–tier players. There is intense
competition between the players as shown by the price wars between UPS and Federal Express.

However, the power of employees has grown considerably since the early 1990s. Even though UPS
was a manager owned private firm, the employees went on strike in 1997 and successfully obtained
wage rises and other benefits. Federal Express handed out $20 Million worth of bonuses at the same
time to thank their employees as well as make sure that they did not consider similar actions. This
shows that employee power has increased in recent times leading to lower industry attractiveness.
Customers
Since the early 1990s, the players in the market have copied each other's innovations and this has
led to very little differentiation of products in the market. Customers in this industry are very price
sensitive and little differentiation allows them to shop around for the best deal. In businesses, there
was also a trend towards contracts with multiple suppliers and this further increased customer
power. These factors combined have led to lower industry attractiveness since 1990.
Substitutes
In 1990, email was not a viable substitute as it was still a part of the research network and not
commercially available. The only substitute was standard mail and facsimile. Therefore, in recent
years, attractiveness has lowered due to the introduction of another substitute.
New Entrants
It would be more difficult for a new entrant to enter in 1997 than it would have been in 1990 as the
current incumbents have had 5–7 more years of benefit

Airborne Express is the third largest and fastest growing international air express delivery company
in America. It held roughly 16% of the domestic express mail market by 1997. It provides time–
sensitive delivery of documents, letters, small packages, and freight in the United States and
internationally. The company has several advantages over its rivals, such as it provides delivery
services at a lower cost of up to 20% over FedEx and UPS; it operates the nation's only privately
owned foreign trade zone in Wilmington; it is more flexible and provides more customer–tailored

Competition: the US domestic express mail market is somewhat in an oligopoly status. The
competition among the big three is quite fierce. Yet normally FedEx and UPS lead the market. The
six other second–tier players do not have any threats to the three major players.
The US Postal Service served much of the rest of the market. However, it has a limited popularity
just among residential customers because it is inefficient in package tracking and has a much worse
on–time delivery record. It has a legal monopoly for first–class letters. But the company is
prohibited by law from offering volume discounts to customers.
DHL and TNT focus on the international market and trans–border shipments. DHL offer hard–to–
reach service since it has hubs in many other different places in the world. It has never invested
heavily in domestic market. TNT focuses its effort on Europe.
BAX Global focuses on heavy cargo. RPS does not offer overnight delivery. It focused on two–day
delivery via a ground network. It is known for its efficient ground transportation and its
