1. In order to choose names for both of my characters I firstly took the 10 most popular names of
females and males who were born in 1996 (aged 18). I did this because my target audience is for
teenagers and young adults - I wanted them to be able to relate to the film in order for it to feel
more realistic.
The top 10 most popular male names in 1996 (England and Wales) were:
1. Jack
2. Daniel
3. Thomas
4. James
5. Joshua
6. Matthew
7. Ryan
8. Joseph
9. Samuel
10. Liam
The top 5 most popular female names in 1996 (England and Wales) were:
1. Sophie
2. Chloe
3. Jessica
4. Emily
5. Lauren
6. Hannah
7. Charlotte
8. Rebecca
9. Amy
10. Megan
I got this information from wwww.ons.gov.uk, which is the Office for National Statistics.
To then find a name for my two characters, I gave out a questionnaire to twenty 17-18 year olds
and asked them to select their preferred male and female name from the lists above.
2. The results from this questionnaire were:
Female
Name
Number of
students
who
preferred the
name
Male
Name
Number of
students
who
preferred the
name
Sophie 2 Jack 1
Chloe 1 Daniel 0
Jessica 5 Thomas 2
Emily 1 James 0
Lauren 4 Joshua 3
Hannah 0 Matthew 0
Charlotte 1 Ryan 1
Rebecca 2 Joseph 2
Amy 4 Samuel 4
Megan 0 Liam 7
From these results I found that Jessica and Liam were the most preferred names. I then chose
these names for the protagonists of the film.
