1. Construction
The first new media technology I used in the construction of the short film was a video
camera (borrowed from college) to film our footage, it was suitable camera for what we
needed film. I have had past experience using these cameras so was able to get going
with it straight away. After the filming we used a software called iMovie, this new
technology allowed us upload all of our footage in to one place crop it and cut it in places
we needs and put each clip in the right order to create the continuity sequence. This
proved hard at times as we used two cameras and had a lot of footage. We cut it from
17minutes of footage down to the 5 minutes allowed. We then used it to add in still
camera images to add iconography for our piece. Whilst editing out piece we slightly
altered the film from our original idea as some things we had hope to do were proved to
be too tricky with the equipment we had, given more time I think this could have been
worked on. We didn’t use any additional sound affects as our film was meant to see as
naturalistic as possible and we felt adding these in would have taken away they natural
element. However we got a clip from YouTube, which is one of the newer technologies
we used, from this we got a clip with both a visual and sound effects of a static noise. We
felt this still kept the feel to our film natural yet completed our film so the audience knew
it had come to an end as we left the storyline of the film on a cliff-hanger. I think without
all the new media technologies we used for the construction of our film we wouldn’t
have been able to create an as effective piece and instead would have looked non
naturalistic. It would have also been more time consuming as if we didn’t have iMovie or
a similar software we would have had to make sure every clip was the exact length we
wanted as we wouldn’t have been able to cut it.
2. Research & Planning
• In this section I feel I used the least amount of new
technologies. I didn’t use as many cameras or software for
this part, instead I went for the creative approach where by
I used pens and paper to create spider diagrams, lists and
pictures to jot down initial ideas. I found this a lot easier as
I already had ideas in my head and wanted to put them
down as I saw this so the easiest way to do this was to
draw pictures of how I saw the characters and make spider
diagrams of the key conventions I wanted to include.
However I did use one new technology and that was a
borrow camera from college. This was a still camera and I
used it to take pictures of possible location shots including
forests and my own house, this was helpful as it allowed
me to visualise my ideas.
3. Evaluation
• I personally feel the evaluation stage let us explore and use the most new media technologies
as I wanted to come up with a different way to present each of the evaluation questions. As
you can see I have used slide share which is a relatively new technology that allowed me to
converge all of my ideas into one place using a number of slides. I also used a voice over
technique to go with my short film, this allowed me to speak about my work as well as
providing visual evidence so it is clear what I did and why I did it for each section of the short
film. This involved me using a microphone to record my voice and the software iMovie that
allowed me to crop the audio and video to make a continuity sequence. For another part of
the evaluation I used a video camera (which I have a lot of past experience with) to record my
audience feed back, although the video recorder is relatively new, the newest media
technology I used was Facebook, I used this to post my short video and gain some comments
from my fellow peers, this new media technology allowed me to not only use it as a social
networking site to gain feedback but to share the sort film with all of my friends, I found this
very helpful and useful that I was able to do both of these in one place. The same principle
goes for the 2nd largest search engine YouTube, this also allowed me to share the short film
and gain feedback from the same place however YouTube has a greater number of users
meaning I could get feedback from people other than my friends and fellow peers. The final
new technology I used was wordle, this is an online program that allows you to brainstorm
key words/sentences down and randomises them into a picture. I found this new media
technology effective as I used it to sum up all of my feedback i got into the most useful and
important words I thought best described my film.
