The Blood Rushing Effect On Readers, And Dracula By Bram...
Only few stories and novels have the blood rushing effect on readers, and Dracula by Bram Stoker is
one of those novels. This novel utilizes the method of using letters and other documents in order to
tell the story. The application of the epistolary technique in the story Dracula proves to be quite
effective because it does enable the reader to foresee the happenings in the story on a closer and
more personal scale. In this novel, the man who writes the letters in Transylvania experiences a vast
amount of supernatural experiences. Within the first four chapters of Dracula, Jonathan Harker
witnesses supernatural occurrence's such as seeing flickering blue lights, how Jonathan Harker's
coachman magically made the were–wolves disappear, and how he cannot see the Count Dracula's
reflection in the mirror. In the novel Dracula, Jonathan Harker tries to overlook these supernatural
occurrences because of Mr. Hawkins interest. However, this reason may not be the most realistic
justification in why Jonathan is persistent in his stay, but rather he is also aware that he is a prisoner.
The novel Dracula also has many other supernatural aspects such as the three women in Count
Dracula's house, and how Count Dracula proceeds down the walls in a lizard like manner. In the
novel Dracula, it could be argued that Jonathan Harker is not a reliable narrator because of the fact
that he is the only one in the book experiencing these occurrences and his mental state is
questionable at times. The

' Dracula, And Michael Pink And Bram Stoker's Dracula
There's a reason why Bram Stoker's Dracula is arguably one of the greatest gothic novels of all time,
and Michael Pink's readaptation of the classic certainly does not disappoint. Pink's Dracula,
performed by the Colorado Ballet on Sunday, October 15, 2017, at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House
at Denver Center for the Performing Arts with music composed by Philip Feeney left me feeling
spooked and desperately wanting more. Prevailing themes of rising tension, suspense, and terror
made for an intriguing experience that was executed beautifully by a talented cast and crew. The
effortless blend of horror and romance is captivating and offers a range of elements each individual
audience member can appreciate.
Originally premiering in 1996, Bradford Alhambra, England; the dance adaptation of Bram Stoker's
gothic novel, Dracula is divided into three acts, each focusing on a different victim of Count Dracula
(Domenico Luciano). Dracula tells the story of Jonathan Harker (Yosvani Ramos), who travels to
Transylvania to settle a transaction with a nobleman, Count Dracula, over the purchase of property
in England. As demonstrated in the first act, Harker's visit to Transylvania haunts him with recurring
nightmares as he awakes in the sanatorium in shear terror wrapped in his wife's arms. In the second
act, the audience is introduced to Lucy (Chandra Kuykendall), a friend of Harker's wife Mina, who
is so effortlessly seduced by Dracula at a Tea Dance in the Grand Hotel.

Dracula Summary Chapter 14
During chapter 14 of the novel Dracula we see one of our protagonists, Jonathan Harker, travel to
London with his wife, Mina Harker, where they plan to group up with the group of people working
to put an end to Count Dracula, including Dr.Van Helsing and Dr.Seward. As Mr.Harker recovers
from his nervous breakdown from the previous chapter –which was brought about when he caught
sight of a man who resembled Dracula– Dr.Van Helsing reassures Mr.Harker. After reading through
Mr.Harker's journal Dr.Van Helsing determines that everything Mr.Harker had experienced was real.
From that point onward all of the trauma and fear Jonathan Harker had experienced after being
Dracula's prisoner was erased. In fact, Mr.Harker goes on to write about how eager he is to help in
putting an end to the vampire's reign of terror when he is asked to help Dr.Van Helsing, "Then I am
with you heart and soul" (198). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jonathan Harker was essentially tortured by Dracula for three months, readers cannot be expected to
believe that being emotionally abused for weeks at a time can be so easily erased from Mr.Harker's
mind in such a short time simply because his experiences were validated. Additionally, Mr.Harker
does not only overcome the mental anguish he underwent, but his personality completely

1) Stoker, Bram. Dracula Archibald Constable and Company 26 May 1897, EBook
2) Copyright Date 1897, Horror fiction/Gothic fiction. This story was written in the 15th Century,
during the Victorian time period. The three characteristics it portrays are good and evil, not to judge
someone before you know them and man vs. himself
3) Man Vs. Himself
There are clear clashes between characters; in any case, the focal clash is amongst man and his
feelings of trepidation. Dracula really speaks to malice; he is a forcing character who is startling in
both appearance and in his deeds. Alternate characters who interact with him understand how
malevolent and startling he is. Everybody who interacts with him is threatened and terrified by him.

Underneath a finish of blue–blooded appeal, the number has a dull and wickedness soul. He can
expect the type of a creature, control the climate, and he is more grounded than twenty men. His
forces are constrained, notwithstanding–for example, he can 't enter a casualty 's home unless
welcomed, can 't cross water unless conveyed, and is rendered feeble by sunshine.
6) Act I Dracula touches base in England and begins feeding on Lucy Westenra which makes her
turn.
Act II Dr. Seward and Van Helsing give her blood transfusions, however she transforms into a
vampire at any rate. They execute her and begin laying arrangements to murder Dracula also.
Act III Dracula assaults Mina Harker. Things are looking urgent. The novel wraps up with Dr.
Seward, Van Helsing, and team seeking after Dracula to the doors of Castle Dracula, where they at
long last murder him.
7) The novel mostly is narrated in First Person but with particularly multiple characters, this effected
the tone by switching characters, it actually makes the readers essentially become the characters, or
so they particularly thought.
8) The climax in the story definitely is when Mina watches his eyes load with triumph, which kind
of is fairly significant. Before he can completely rise, Harker and Morris for the most part cut him,
however Morris soon basically kicks the bucket of wounds he particularly has endured,
demonstrating how the climax in the story kind of is when Mina watches his eyes load with triumph,

The Nature Of Good And Evil In Bram Stoker's Dracula
Bram Stoker's Dracula expressed the nature of good and evil. An English realtor, Jonathan Harker,
journeyed to Transylvania in order to complete a sale for a residence in London to a Transylvanian
vampire, Count Dracula. What Harker did not know was that Dracula wanted to move to England so
he can expand his power, creating a new monarchy of vampires.
The Christian religion depicted many instances throughout Dracula. Early in the novel, Harker was
preparing his journey to Dracula's castle until an innkeeper's wife put a crucifix around his neck
saying it was the eve of St. George's Day, when "all the evil things in the world will have full sway."
Crucifixes were a way to show that Christian objects promised protection from evil. The

He, being a satanic figure, revealed by the consumption of blood, and also being shown by his
physical appearance; he had long, sharp fangs, fiery red eyes, and pointed ears. Dracula also had
many abilities that are typically awarded strictly to God; he can control animals, the weather, and
shapeshift. Christians believed that the consumption of God's body and blood through communion
will give them everlasting life with God in heaven. Dracula consumed human blood in order to
remain "undead" and to have strength. His horrific actions embodied the complete opposite of the
God. Not only did these actions illustrated the opposition of the two figures but, it also showed how
Dracula bypassed God and went to humans for his restoration in life after death. Therefore, he
shunned God as the supplier of life.
Dracula was as evil as a creature could become and was atrocious in the eyes of the Christian
religion. He was a symbol of the Anti–Christ and Satan and the fact that holy items harmed Dracula
meant he was pure evil. In the end, Harker, Van Helsing, Mina, and the love interests of Mina's
friend, Lucy Westenra (Quincey Morris, Jack Seward, and Arthur Holmwood) fought against
Dracula to prevent his evil. The main weapons used against Dracula were sacred utensils. Their
struggle was the battle between the holy and the

Victorian Women In Dracula
Bram Stoker presents Lucy Westenra and Mina Murray Harker as the perfect victorian women. Full
of innocence, chaste, and elegance. Prior to the arrival of Dracula, the audience sees Lucy as a as a
voluptuous, beautiful woman. Lucy has three men asking for her hand in marriage. Writing to Mina,
Lucy complains, "Why can't they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all
this trouble?" (81). This shows she knows she cannot say those words because it is frowned upon in
Victorian culture, but it does not stop her from mentally crossing rigid social boundary. Lucy is
portrayed by her physical beauty and flirtatiousness. All of her three suitors are enchanted by her
beauty and words. During these letter correspondents, Mina shows ... Show more content on

Working as schoolmistress and takes an interest in her husband's work, which is unheard of during
that time. Mina Murray also shows unyielding devotion to Jonathan for when she hears from him,
goes to his bedside immediately to nurse him. The innocence, chaste, and purity slowly diminishes
as Dracula makes his influence on both of the girls making them voluptuous beings like his three
brides. As Lucy succumbs to illness she becomes more and more unlike a perfect Victorian woman
prior to Dracula's impact on her. Although she becomes weaker, paler, and closer to death, the
woman becomes a wantonness being who her suitors admire and are afraid of. Once was an
embodiment of a perfect Victorian woman is now a monster. As she turns into a vampire, she
becomes bolder and volomptuous. The un–dead Lucy proclaims boldly, "Come to me, Arthur. Leave
these others and come to me. My arms are hungry for you. Come, and we can rest together. Come,
my husband, come!" (289). Van Helsing, Quincey Morris, John Seward, and Arthur seeing her as a
threat to society must return her to her purer state. Van Helsing believes it's best if Arthur himself
does the job of getting rid of the demon. Once Arthur runs the stake through Lucy's heart, the

Bram Stoker's Popula
The book I chose to read for the book review is Dracula by Irish author Bram Stoker. It is a Gothic
horror novel and was published May 26, 1897. 1897 was the height of the British Empire expansion.
Great Britain had expanded to much of the land of Africa, Asia, and North America, which they used
to fuel its tremendous military and economic power. But this high point was also the start of the
declined to the British power. America's and Germany's rise in powers threated to remove Great
Britain as the most powerful country. The increase of immigration brought many new unfamiliar
races and cultures onto British soil. The turn of the century saw a sometime violent reaction to the
foreigners.
Back when Dracula was written it was not an immediate bestseller when it was published even
though reviewers were generous with their praises of it. One review even said, "Dracula is cleverly
constructed, skillfully and strongly told, and has a strong hold upon the imagination, and will hold
its own with the few really powerful stories of its kind..." (Mercury) It did make much money for
Stoker while he was alive. Although it was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John Seward is one of Lucy's three suitors. He owns and runs a mental hospital where he is the
doctor at. Dr. Abraham Van Helsing is Dr. Sward's friend and mentor. He is a scientist and doctor
who is well versed in ancient superstitions and philosophy. He is the one who discovers that there is
a vampire in England. Arthur Holmwood is the son of Lord Godalming and another one of Lucy's
three suitors and later becomes her fiancé. He cared for Lucy a lot and he was the one to stab her in
the heart. Quincey Morris is an American from Texas and he is another of Lucy's three suitors. He is
the one who stabs Dracula in the heart but he too is stabbed and ends up dying. Renfield is a patient
at Dr. Seward's hospital and he eats flies, spiders, and birds while he is there. He is Dracula's

Different Perception of Women: Dracula by Bram Stoker
In the late 19th century, when Dracula by Bram Stoker is written, women were only perceived as
conservative housewives, only tending to their family's needs and being solely dependent of their
husbands to provide for them. This novel portrays that completely in accordance to Mina Harker,
but Lucy Westenra is the complete opposite. Lucy parades around in just her demeanor as a
promiscuous and sexual person. While Mina only cares about learning new things in order to assist
her soon–to–be husband Jonathan Harker. Lucy and Mina both become victims of vampirism in the
novel. Mina is fortunate but Lucy is not. Overall, the assumption of women as the weaker specimen
is greatly immense in the late 19th century. There are also many underlying ... Show more content

According to Thomas C. Foster, the author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively
and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines, he states in his chapter "It's All About Sex..."
that stairs represents sexual intercourse. ( ). In the scene leading up to Jonathan Harker getting
seduced, he has to climb up stairs to reach the room. The stairs could be a foreshadowing of a sexual
intercourse about to take place. It is possible that the women and Jonathan could have had sexual
intercourse, due to his actions of accepting the temptation of seduction, but we will never know
because Jonathan is saved by Dracula.
According to Thomas Foster in his chapter "Nice to Eat You: Acts of Vampires", evil has had to do
with sex since the serpent seduced Eve. (Foster 16). The act of Eve being seduced by the serpent
was a sexual act and it was very evil. Foster states many things in this section that relate to Dracula.
"The Count always has this weird attractiveness to him?" (16). "...always he's alluring, dangerous,
mysterious and he tends to focus on beautiful, unmarked virginal women." (16). "A nasty old man,
attractive but evil, violates young women, leaves his mark on them, steals their innocence and their
"usefulness" and leaves them helpless followers in his sin." (16). These define the novel's storyline
perfectly. "But it's also about things other than literal vampirism: selfishness,

The Ideal Victorian Model Of Bram Stoker 's Dracula
Bram Stoker 's novel, Dracula was written during the late nineteenth century and is commonly
classified as a horror novel. Further analysis, however, has brought to light the buried symbols and
themes of sexuality that the novel holds within it. Due to its female sexual symbolism, the novel
draws the attention of most men, as exploring these female forbidden themes were more of a fantasy
for them than reality. As Dracula was set in the Victorian culture, it is shown to encompass all the
beliefs and prejudices of the society, especially in regards to the social gender roles of men and
women. Women were known to be suppressed and put down socially while men were lifted up and
known for the authority and freedom they possessed. Through the ... Show more content on

So true, so sweet, so noble, so little an egoist…" (Stoker 306). Mina is an intelligent, educated
woman who uses her attained skills solely to better her husband, Jonathan Harker. Stoker uses Mina
's speech in the novel to emphasize her dedication to her husband: "I have been working very hard
lately because I want to keep up with Jonathan 's studies, and I have been practicing shorthand very
assiduously" (Stoker 86). Although she works full–time, she tirelessly takes on other commitments
such as perfecting her shorthand so that she would "be useful to Jonathan" (Stoker 86). She is also
seen thinking very highly of men in general and their independence from women: "a brave man 's
hand can speak for itself; it does not even need a woman 's love to hear its music" (Stoker 386).
Let 's Hear It for the Ladies Bram Stoker 's Dracula, there are two women who find themselves
Count Dracula 's midnight snack. Mina Harker and Lucy Westenra are best friends, but they are very
different women. By comparing these two characters we can see the tension between the Victorian
ideal woman and the threatening New Woman. Remember that when Dracula was written in the late
19th Century, women were expected to be submissive wives and doting mothers who stayed at
home. This was the Victorian ideal. However, women were becoming more independent and taking
advantage of new opportunities in education and employment. These New Women were a source of
concern as they were seen as too

Examples Of Warning Signs In Dracula
Stoker, Dracula (1879), pages 9–74 Ch1–6 What I found immediately interesting about this novel is
that there are so many warning signs presented to Jonathan Harker as he makes his way to
Transylvania and at the beginning of his stay at Count Dracula's house. For example, all the
superstitious reactions from the villagers, the very strange ride up to the castle, the lack of servants,
and Count Dracula's odd demeanor. All of these things should cause alarm in Harker, yet he
continues on with his task anyway. I wonder what makes him ignore these obvious signs? When I
first started to think about the answer to this question, it reminded me of another dilemma that is
currently questioned in society today: why are so many females sexually assaulted?

Mina Harker's Character In Dracula
"Doors, doors, doors everywhere, and all locked and bolted. In no place... is there an available exit.
The castle is a veritable prison, and I am a prisoner!" (Stoker 27). Dracula is a nineteenth–century
thriller that contains horrific factors of gothic literature and takes place during the Victorian era. In
the novel, Bram Stoker chooses to present strongly–written characterization of Mina Harker to
counteract the elements of gothic literature by having her bring a positive mood to the story,
represent women of the future, and associate loyalty with the essential characters. Throughout
Dracula, Mina is the character to rely on for consistent faith and optimism. When Lucy's illness
seemed to worsen with each passing day, Mina could still find comfort in her religion. She says, "I
must only pray to God for patience" (Stoker 77). With her mindset, she is under the impression that

Her connection with Lucy between letters gave Van Helsing a reason to meet and immediately adore
her. He tells her, "I am grateful to you, you so clever woman... It will be pleasure and delight if I

From their first interaction, Van Helsing is aware of Mrs. Harker's intelligence, kindness, and
cleverness. Adding on, Mina chronologically organizes every collected piece of evidence relating to
Dracula, because she is devoted to abolish the cause of her husband's suffering. She says, "We have
got everything in order for tonight. I feel myself quite wild with excitement" (Stoker 241). Mina's
loyalty is so forceful, that she feels joy simply at the thought of providing help for the others. Bram
Stoker gave her this significant trait so that she may be recognized for not only her cheery nature,

Theme Of Gender In Dracula
Dracula Essay: Gender and Sexuality
Q: Throughout the novel, why does Dracula center around the ideals of women containing purity
and youth?
The novel Dracula written by Bram Stoker is focused around the mid–20th century where women
were expected to obtain Victorian ideals. This was a time where women were also emerging
themselves into the New Women role, though were often met with social disapproval. Men were
recognized for their bravery and power while women were suppressed by authority. Throughout this
story, the two leading female characters Mina Murray and Lucy Westenra are challenged to uphold

Mina is described as an educated and hardworking wife who loyally supports her husband Jonathan
Harker. Her faithfulness to Jonathan is bestowed when she says, "I have been working very hard
lately, because I want to keep up with Jonathan's studies, and I have been practicing shorthand very
assiduously" (86). Her commitment to her husband is her top priority, exemplifying how useful she
is towards Jonathan in their marriage. Although Mina is educated, has her own self–sustaining job,
and shows some characteristics of a New Woman, she uses these benefits for the purpose of
supporting her husband. Furthermore, Mina endorses maternal characteristics in order to support the
other men in the group. Furthermore, she does not conform to sexual urges which ensures the fact
that Mina exemplifies the Victorian women perfectly: "We women have something of the mother in
us that makes us rise above smaller matters when the mother–spirit is invoked; I felt this big,
sorrowing man's head resting on me, as though it were that of the baby that someday may lie on my
bosom, and I stroked his hair as though he were my own child" (247). The men within the group
regard Mina as a motherly figure and confide in her. On multiple occasions Mina is described as
"angelic" but once she is tainted with Dracula's blood she is instantly malicious and immoral. As
Dracula forces Mina to drink his blood, "His right hand

Mina Harker From Dracula
For centuries, women in England and the Americans were seen as objects. Women were looked at as
the weaker sex and as inferior (less than) to men. Men have always been perceived as the stronger
sex, having the superiority and power over women. Traditionally, men were the authoritarians and
the heads of the household. However, the roles for women have changed in both America and
England. As time progresses, women have gain control of their rights and attained some gender
equality in society such as working outside their homes and having an education. One way of
examining this change is in Gothic fiction by looking at how women have evolved themselves from
the patriarchal culture. Women were able to live their own lives and not in a men's world. ... Show

Dracula is a proud of his lineage. His blood is noble among gypies (criminals) but when placed in
comparison to the elite of England, he is considered primitive, "...Dracula's criminality dominates
over his noble blood: 'science' assimilates him to a lower type, associating him with animals and

By the end of Dracula, the younger characters return to clear and defined statuses; Lucy is at peace

The defined social categories that the characters wish to achieve can only be possessed by
recognizing their opposing forces. Anne McWhir concludes that the road to purification for Mina

Essay on A Summary of Bram Stoker's Dracula
A Summary of Bram Stoker's Dracula
Dracula is an epistolary novel, meaning that is composed from letters, journal and diary entries,
telegrams, and newspaper clippings.
Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray (later Mina Harker), and Dr. Seward write the largest contributions
to the novel although the writings of Lucy
Westenra and Abraham Van Helsing constitute some key parts of the book. The novel has a slightly
journalistic feel, as it is a harrowing account supposedly written by the people who witnessed the
book's events. A young Englishman named Jonathan Harker travels through Transylvania on a
business trip. He is there to aid Count Dracula, a Transylvanian nobleman, in buying an English
estate. His journey into the remote ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eerie things happen one night, Mina finds her unconscious in the cemetery, as a figure with glowing
eyes bends over her. The figure disappears as Mina comes closer, but night after night strange events
continue and Lucy grows thinner and paler with each passing day.
Word comes from Budapest that Jonathan has been found, sick with brain fever. He can remember
nothing of his travels in Transylvania. Mina goes to nurse him back to health and to help him make
the trip back to
England. When she arrives, they marry immediately. He gives her his diary but is afraid to read it;
she seals the diary and promises that she will never read it unless it is for his sake.
Back in England, Lucy has returned to her home in London. Arthur, fearful for her health, asks Dr.
Seward to try to figure out what is wrong with her. Seward is baffled by her illness, and calls in the
aid of his old mentor, the brilliant Professor Abraham Van Helsing. Van
Helsing seems to know from the beginning what he might be up against.
He tries to use various charms, as well as constant blood transfusions, to keep Lucy alive. Again and
again, his attempts are thwarted by a mixture of Dracula's cunning and bad luck. Lucy's mother is
killed by a heart attack during one of Dracula's more dramatic plots to get to Lucy, and Lucy dies a
few days later. Arthur's father dies at about this time. Van

Harker's Description Of Dracula
Bridging East and West:
When we first meet Dracula, he motions Harker into his castle, speaking "excellent English, but
with a strange intonation" (Stoker 22). Dracula desires to become a part of English culture and
society so thoroughly that he will be able to blend into society, a feat that Harker helps him
accomplish. Dracula desires this because he wants to live in and infect Britain. This terrifying image
strikes at the heart of an anxiety of Victorian Britain. Up until the late middle of the nineteenth
century, Britain had ruled the waves and was the only dominant global power. As the nineteenth
century came to a close, fears of the British Empire's weaknesses were beginning to emerge, as
German and Russian forces were growing in strength. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jonathan remarks as he notes his despair over being locked in the Castle with the three women, "I
am alone in the castle with these awful women. Faugh! Mina is a woman and there is nought in

sexually awakened then Mina. This is seen in Lucy's several proposals and her wonderings: "Why
can't they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble? But this is
heresy, and I must to say it" (Stoker 67). Lucy desires more sexually then Mina does, and later on,
she pays dearly for it. Mina is regarded highly by all of the men, and as mentioned before, is

A Vampire’s Touch: Exploring Sexual Nature in Dracula
Jonathan and Sexuality Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray's fiancé, represents a typical human dealing
with sexual desires. He knows for certain that he wants to marry and spend the rest of his life with
Mina but still struggles with natural, sexual urges. The reader clearly detects Jonathan's struggle
when he encounters the three vampire ladies in Dracula's castle. As he lies there, Jonathan feels "an
agony of delightful anticipation," and also describes one of the ladies as having "a deliberate
voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive" (38–39). Here Jonathan uses contrasting
words to describe his encounter with the vampires. In his mind, he knows this is wrong, but his body
is telling him otherwise: "[T]he skin of my throat began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems that Dracula is only sucking Lucy's blood, so if the reader interprets sucking blood as
having sex, then they can identify Dracula as having sex with Lucy multiple times. The reader
cannot forget that Lucy had multiple blood transfusions from her three suitors and Van Helsing.
Now, if we take another look, considering each man's blood in Lucy, then the reader can interpret
Dracula sucking the blood of the men through Lucy as him having sexual relations with each of
Lucy's donors. The second, and possibly the most obvious instance, is when Dracula imprisons
Jonathan in his castle. McCrea supports this view by stating, "For queer theorists ... this is the
episode that furnishes the most glaring moments of homoeroticism" (266). In the climax of
Jonathan's mystical sexual experience with the vampire ladies, Dracula bursts in the room
exclaiming, "'How dare you touch him ... How dare you cast eyes on him when I had forbidden it?
... This man belongs to me! Beware how you meddle with him, or you'll have to deal with me.'"
Then one of the vampire ladies replies, "'You yourself never loved; you never love'" (39–40). Here
the reader witnesses Dracula's extreme possession of Jonathan, saying that Jonathan "belongs" to
him (39). Yu also interprets this scene as "Dracula ... [being] a pervert hungry not only for blood but
for sexual gratification" (162). The vampire woman's response that Dracula "never loved" also
shows that the she knows his homosexuality will

Setting Of Dracula
The story begins as Jonathan Harker arrives at Dracula's castle in Transylvania to figure out a
business deal regarding the Carfax estate in London. During his stay, Harker cuts himself while
shaving and Dracula dives for his blood. This is when a beautiful woman appears and confirms
Harker's suspicion that Dracula is a vampire. Meanwhile, back in England, a mysterious ship runs
aground, however, all the ship carries is dirt. People also spot a small dog running from the ship
only to disappear into the woods. Soon after the ship's appearance, Harker's fiancee, Mina falls ill.
Mina is taken to doctor Van Helsing but he is unable to figure out the cause, the only thing he sees
are two small marks on her neck. As the doctors talk, mental patient Renfield enters the room.
However, he only eats the bugs on the windowsill. As Mina's condition worsens, Van Helsing calls
in Seward, another doctor. After some observation, Seward comes to the conclusion that Mina's
condition has been caused by a vampire. In an effort to keep Mina safe they hang garlic in the
windows at night and put a crucifix around her neck. That night the doctors come by to check on
Mina, but they soon realize that a maid has removed the garlic from the window and Dracula is

Dracula's Role Of Women During The Victorian Era
Have you ever wondered why women are the way they are today? Well, Dracula takes a very good
look at how women were once treated and hints at what they will evolve into. Dracula takes place
during the Victorian Era where women were considered less than men. Dracula was written back in
1897 and contains Religious references that aid the main characters to subdue the cruel vampire
known as Dracula. During the Victorian Era women were stay at home wives and their only job was
to have children and to tidy up the house. They were devoted to their husband and everything they
did was to benefit their husband. Women were viewed as fragile creatures that should not be
involved in anything dangerous. However, some of these women, such as the three vampire sisters,
are very dangerous, capable of killing children so that they may live longer, which contradicts the
thought that women are fragile and need protecting. In Bram Stoker's Dracula the role of Victorian
women in England have continuously evolved into what women are today. Van Helsing's biggest
compliment for Mina is that she has a "man's brain". In his eyes Mina's combination of masculine
intellect and feminine sweetness makes her the perfect Victorian woman. Van Helsing describes how
Mina Harker is the perfect example of a Victorian Women and since she happens to be so smart she
must have the brain of a man that makes her seemingly perfect. Van Helsing compliment Mina by

Once infected by Dracula, Lucy becomes sexually overt and aggressive; and is portrayed as a
monster and a social outcast. She transforms into the ‘Bloofar Lady ' and feeds on children making
her the maternal antithesis as well as a child molester (Jones, p. 87). In order to rectify Lucy 's
condition she is sexually overpowered by her fiancee Holmwood; he penetrates her to death with a
stake through the chest, a staking which is overtly sexual in interpretation, as "the thing in the coffin
writhed; and a hideous, blood–curdling screech came from the opened red lips. The body shook and
quivered and twisted in wild contortions; the sharp white teeth champed together till the lips were
cut, and the mouth was smeared with a crimson foam.........He looked like a figure of Thor as his
untrembling arm rose and fell, driving deeper and deeper" (Stoker p. 241). This sexual innuendo
restores the Victorian balance of sexual penetration from the female domain back its accepted
station within the male domain. Showalter interprets the killing as a gang rape, done with
"impressive phallic instrument" (p. 181). "Those serial transfusions which, while they pretend to

Good Vs. Evil In Dracula By Bram Stoker
Evil never conquers because good always overcomes it. A good example of this is the book Dracula
by Bram Stoker because the author expresses the nature of good vs. evil. Dracula wants to come to
London because he wants to turn everyone into vampires. The basic background of the book
Dracula is when Jonathan Harker, a realtor who is sent to Transylvania to complete a transaction

world domination. Well, while Harker is on a train to Transylvania he enters "the east, a section of
Europe whose peoples and customs will be for the most part, strange and unfamiliar" (Dracula, 20).

Jonathan analyzes Dracula and notices one very strange feature, his mouth is thick and white; they
cover sharp white teeth, which stick out over his lip. What Jonathan does not know is that those
teeth are canine teeth only found in animals. There are exceptions, for instance, vampires have these
teeth so they can puncture the human's carotid vessel in their neck and suck their blood. The first
time that Jonathan sees Dracula's cannibal teeth grow is when Harker starts shaving. He accidentally
cuts himself and Dracula leaps for his throat so he can suck his blood. Harker touches his crucifix
and Dracula's "demonic fury" vanishes. The strangest event that Harker notices in Dracula's castle is
"Dracula emerge from his room on the floor below, slither out, head downward, in lizard fashion,
with his cloak spread out around him like great wings" (Dracula, 179). This shows that "Dracula is
not a person. He is a presence, an absence that requires concealing" (Wolf, 368). This tells Harker

Suspense in Bram Stoker's Epistolary Novel 'Dracula'
Suspense in Bram Stoker's Epistolary Novel Dracula
Bram Stoker uses the epistolary narrative to create suspense in Dracula by drawing the reader into
the personal lives (through the characters' diary entries and letters) and allowing him to experience
the events of the novel on an intimate level. Each character provides a first–hand, first–person
perspective, unique for that specific character's sex, level of education, profession, and state in life,
as well as for that character's ability to create an atmosphere of dread through description of the
scene. This paper will show how the different characters use their own experiences to create
suspense in Stoker's Dracula.
The novel is subtitled a "A Mystery Story," and each chapter is a portion of one of the characters'
journal, diary or letter, providing clues as to the nature of Dracula and how to thwart his evil
intentions. The story begins with Jonathan Harker's journal, which is conveniently recorded "in
shorthand" (1), giving the narrative a quick pace and a personal touch. Harker includes mental notes
such as, "Mem., get recipe for Mina," while noting the details of his dinner, which establishes his
connections/relationships, status in life, etc., without much interrupting the narrative flow. Before
the reader realizes it, he is immersed in the diarist's life.

behavior. Harker's impressions provide the reader with a

Dracula Gender Roles
In Bram Stoker's Dracula, two different types of women are presented throughout the plot. Lucy
Westenra and Mina Harker can both be compared to the upcoming "'New Woman'" (Grand 271) of
the Victorian era. A new kind of woman; riding a bicycle and no more willing to put her fate into a
rich husband's hand but instead keen on working herself. To what extent the two main female
characters resemble this 'New Woman' depends on their performative acts, Judith Butlers' notion
after which gender is constructed. According to Butler, "gender is in no way a stable identity or
locus of agency from which various acts proceed; rather, it is an identity tenuously constituted in
time – an identity instituted through a stylised repetition of acts" (519). So ... Show more content on

These acts however are not a matter of totally individual choice. "Surely, there are nuanced and
individual ways of doing one's gender, but that one does it, and that one does it in accord with
certain sanctions and proscriptions, is clearly not a fully individual matter" (Butler 525). Since these
acts and hence gender its own are social constructions possessing certain cultural significations, the
completely liberated choice of performing one's gender is impeded. On one hand, Mina herself
believes in the importance of female tradition and motherhood especially. "We women have
something of the mother in us that makes us rise above smaller matters when the mother–spirit is
invoked" (Stoker 214). Mina notices such maternal feelings as she consoles her fellows, this time
Arthur Holmwood. On the other hand, she is aware of these proscriptions and therefore sees it as her
duty to prefer marriage and motherhood to an individual career. "You can't go on for some years
teaching etiquette and decorum to other girls without the pedantry of it biting into yourself a bit"
(Stoker 160). The same goes for Lucy. While during the day she is concerned with her growing
'dark' side slowly leading her away from social norms, her nightly sleepwalking makes it possible to
act out her voluptuous nature. This examination shows that, not

Dracula: An Epitome of the Gothic Novel
Alex Prather

British Literature
August 9, 2010 Dracula, by Bram Stoker, is quite the epitome of the gothic novel. Towards the
beginning of the story, the setting takes place in an old and ominous castle, which is highly
characteristic of gothic literature. Harker's tribulation begins when "the driver was in the act of
pulling up the horses in the courtyard of a vast ruined castle," (Stoker 18). There is also a gloomy
and menacing tone given to the setting of the novel, as in most pieces of gothic literature. This
gloom is evident early on in the novel, as it reads, "Then a dog began to howl somewhere in a
farmhouse far down the road––a long, agonized wailing, as if from fear."(Stoker 16). Also
coinciding with the nature of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Seward as he states, "The sweetness was turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to
voluptuous wantonness." (Stoker 226). Lastly, Dracula embodies a symbol of great and
overwhelming power. Dracula proclaims his own might as he declares, "My revenge is just begun! I
spread it over centuries, and time is on my side. Your girls that you all love are mine already; and
through them you and others shall yet be mine – my creatures, to do my bidding and to be my
jackals when I want to feed."
Count Dracula has a profound effect on all the characters in the work of literature. Jonathan Harker's
true determine and courage is brought about to prove that he is more than just a mere solicitor when
he is faced with the troubling dilemma of being trapped in a vampire's castle. His testament that he
will escape may be observed in his journal as so: "I shall not remain alone with them; I shall try to
scale the castle wall farther than I have yet attempted. I shall take some of the gold with me, lest I
want it later. I may find a way from this dreadful place." (Stoker 59). One may also observe the
complete distraught the Count reeks on Harker. Mina's diary reveals that he "raved of dreadful
things," (Stoker 116). Lucy Westenra is affected at great lengths also. Dracula causes her horrible
nightmares, and transforms her dreams into "a presage of horror," (Stoker 138). Eventually the
Counts consequence is so heavy upon her that she is transformed

The Brave Gentlemen And Men Of Science
This lack of maternal instinct is reaffirmed in Stoker's work in two separate instances: when Lucy
lures small children in order to consume them and feed off of their vitality, and in the scene where
the Count takes a newborn to be devoured by the three monstrous women. Insatiable, these femme
fatales are also responsible for the physical decline of Jonathan Harker; they consume his blood and
strength, in a clear allusion to nineteenth–century representations involving the unbridled
consumption of female desires and sexuality: "He is young and strong; there are kisses for us all,"
(Stoker 69) celebrates one of the vampires. Here, the heroic capabilities of man are simultaneously
admired and undercut. The brave gentlemen and men of science outline typical representations of
manhood in their shared eagerness to fight the alien threat of the vampire Dracula and his army of
infected humans. However, the group's shared need for masculinity transforms women into
commodities, because men's anxieties are also directed towards homosocial desires, which they fear
will develop into a morally corruptive homosexual performance. Signorotti states: "The only way to
eliminate the homosexual threat between men is to include a woman in the relationship" (Signorotti
608). Thus, in Dracula the emphasis on male prowess is inherently anchored in the figure of the
female "angel in the house" and in their ambition to protect women from external threat. For
example, the Count is killed through

The Different Adaptations of Dracula
Ever since Bram Stoker wrote his entrancing novel people have been adapting it, and the story is
one of the most reproduced ideas in history. Each innovation of the novel influences the story for the
creators own purpose, and in doing so generates another version of Dracula. Count Dracula has
become an infamous character in history, and has been captured in many different mediums, such as
the Japanese anime and manga series Vampire Hunter D, which follows Draculas son D in his
adventures (Kikuchi). However, one of the adaptations that endures in modern minds is the 1992
film by Francis Ford Coppola, Bram Stoker's Dracula. This version of Dracula was meant to be
loyal to the novel, but it diverged from the original in many ways.

Indeed Mina's attraction to Dracula in the film leads to one of the defining alterations between the
film and movie adaption, the humanization of Dracula. The subtitle of the 1992 film is "Love Never
Dies," (Coppola) which is the love between Dracula and his wife Elisabeta, who is the spitting
image of Mina, and is also represented by Winona Ryder. Throughout the film Dracula tries to win
over Mina in order to regain his love with Elisabeta, who commits suicide after false rumours of
Draculas death are feed to her by priest. The betrayal by the priest and his wife's death, makes
Dracula curse god, and therefore become a vampire. The background story of the character Dracula
makes the monster almost understandable, and the audience begins to sympathize with Dracula.
(0:33–5:38)
Even more, the nauseating "cruel–looking" (49) creature described in the novel is turned into a
charming young Gary Oldman. Although Coppola starts the film with a brilliant representation of
Stoker's monster, he seems to embellish on the younger Dracula (12:44–13:00). In the novel Dracula
becomes younger by gorging himself with blood, but Jonathan Harker describes him "like a filthy
leech, exhausted with his repletion" (83). Coppola makes the monster more of a human, and the
audience can feel for his and Mina's love affair. Also, Jonathan seems distant from Mina, and this
makes the love is even more

The Effect of Supernatural Aspects on the Victorian Society Bram Stoker 's Dracula, presents an

There are several flaws presented throughout the novel as the plot unfolds, which are: characters in

This was the era of the confronting 'New Woman ', who strove to be emancipated both politically
and sexually, a concept which much of the society at the time found highly seditious and unsettling.
Not only is the idea of the 'New Woman ' despised by the society, but the concept of a patriarchal
society changing towards modernity poses as a threat to the Victorian men. For example, Lucy is the
first victim of Dracula in England who turns into a vampire and the men are shocked at the
appearance of what she has changed into: "My own heart grew cold as ice, I could hear the gasp of
Arthur as we recognized the features of Lucy Westenra. Lucy Westenra, but yet how changed"(196).
Dr. Seward is the speaker of this quote and he is horrified by Lucy 's transformation because the
former Lucy had characteristics of an ideal Victorian woman; which is to be frivolous and naïve.
However, now she is a woman who is carnal and unspiritual, which is the perceived danger
represented by the 'New Woman '. This posed a threat to the upper middle–class heterosexual
Protestant male in the society because the 'New Woman ' is thought to be equal to men. In addition
to the society moving towards modernism, due to the contagion of an ancient creature, the gender
roles are constantly in flux. For instance, a wolf controlled by Dracula kills Lucy, Mina allowed

A Common Concern Throughout The Victorian Era
A common concern throughout the Victorian era was the role women maintained and their position
in society. It was expected that both males and females conformed to these roles and followed the
gender expectations of their society. Bram Stoker 's Dracula describes a post dated European setting
in which most women are subject to explicit gender roles and stereotypes. The norm in this society
is for women to be modest, prim and proper. However, the novel narrates the possibilities of a
situation in which women don 't conform and thus are scrutinized. Bram Stoker 's purpose in
Dracula is to express the threat faced by men when encountering women who are in control of their
sexuality and the power that is accompanied with that control. This is ... Show more content on

When the men are reflecting on the woman Lucy used to be, Jack Seward comments that "[they]
recognized the features of Lucy Westenra. Lucy Westenra, but yet how changed. The sweetness was
turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to voluptuous wantonness" (Stoker, 195).
Seward uses very different extreme words to contrast Lucy 's character before and after her
transition. The words "sweetness" and "purity" are associated with the once pure, modest Lucy and
the terms "adamantine, heartless cruelty" and "voluptuous wantonness" are associated with the new,
profoundly sexual Lucy. Seward 's descriptions of Lucy indicate that the men are concerned because
she too was sexually expressive and that poses a threat to the patriarchal beliefs and values that were
set in stone in this era. The author also uses repetition of Lucy 's name, "Lucy Westenra"
emphasizing that while the name is still the same, everything else about her is completely different.
It is evident that Seward, along with other men are more inclined to perceive modest women more
positively than women who are not. As a result of adversely characterized women, Stoker is able to
use juxtaposition to convey how men feel about women and their sexualities. Bram Stoker uses this
element of form when Jonathan comes across the beautiful women in the forbidden section of the
castle. Jonathan says "I am alone in the castle

Bram Stoker’S 1897 Novel Dracula Is Far From Being A Simple
Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula is far from being a simple penny dreadful in which good
triumphs evil; instead it is a story of contradictions. The Count himself is one of them; he is both
living and dead. Stoker creates this awkward and anxiety inducing contradictions not only in the
Count but within Victorian era itself. In this time of enlightenment, superstition and science are
constantly shown to be intertwined in a way that seems to bewilder the characters as much it does

The quick sending of messages was also necessary in tracking the vampire. In the scene where they
learned that the Count was aboard a boat in his voyage to Transylvania, Arthur has telegrams sent to
him daily to keep tabs on its whereabouts. Telegrams were also sent between Lucy's suitors so that
Van Helsing can use them for blood transfusions. The transfusions are also modern technology; with
them they were able to prolong the life of Lucy long enough so that Van Helsing could connect the
dots. The use of modern technologies was crucial to successfully hunting the Count. Without the
modern construct of social class the group wouldn't have been able to afford the latest technology.
The high social ranking did blind them from the superstition which would be fairly common for a

The Use Of Gothic Elements In Dracula By Bram Stoker
Vampires: How They Were Made
Most people wonder where the idea of vampires came from and how did the first one come about.
The novel, Dracula, is set and written in the nineteenth century during the Victorian era. The
Victorian people had certain beliefs about Christianity and the roles of men and women in society.
Women were allowed only to do certain things and were expected to do specific things in regards to
men. The Victorian people also had their own interpretation of superstitions. Stoker introduced the
Victorian people to gothic elements in his literary works. In literature, gothic novels often use gothic
elements to support their themes and the mood. Since Dracula is a gothic novel Stoker used the
same gothic element ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the gothic element of degeneration and decay supports the theme of good versus evil
throughout the novel. Stoker also uses the atmosphere throughout the novel to establish the vampire
tradition. This gothic element is displayed in Jonathan's journey to Bistritz: "As we wound on our
endless way, and the sun sank lower and lower behind us. This was emphasized by the fact that the
snowy mountain–top still held the sunset, seemed to glow out with a delicate cool pink...goitre was
painfully prevalent" (Stoker 8). Usually the atmosphere of the book is filled with degeneration and
decay, so both of these gothic elements play a role in making a gothic novel. These gothic elements
also establish the vampire tradition of the setting and superstition. This atmosphere concept is used
in other novels as well like the novel Moby Dick: "...its [the ship's] weather–stained hull, its
venerable bows, its grotesqueness and somber picturesqueness" (Magistrale 203). In this quote,
Tony Magistrale is comparing a ship at sea, the Pequod, to a haunted house on land. Magistrale's
purpose of comparing the ship to the house is to present the use of gothic elements to build up the
setting for a gothic novel. Stoker uses this concept of gothic elements, specifically the atmosphere,
to establish the vampire and gothic tradition of literature. The gothic atmosphere can set a theme for
the superstition of certain atmospheres.

Compare/Contrast of Bram Stoker's Dracula and Polidori's...
Comparison and Contrast of Bram Stoker's Dracula and Polidori's The Vampyre
While Bram Stoker's Dracula and Polidori's The Vampyre share some minor details, mostly
regarding the basics of vampires and the location and date in which the stories take place, the
majority of the stories differ greatly. The Vampyre was published almost a hundred years earlier, so
it is easy to see how some details of that story can be seen in Dracula. Bram Stoker no doubt must
have used The Vampyre as an influence, but only as an influence, as his story has its own unique
details regarding characters and plot. I will discuss how the stories of The Vampyre and Dracula
begin in a similar fashion, and then explain how there are key differences in narration, ... Show more

The journal entries also give a very personal view of the events unfolding, and the reader reads the
lines often times as if they were written as the events unfold, for example in Harker's final journal
entry before escaping the castle he writes: "As I write this there is in the passage below a sound of
many tramping feet and the crash of weights being set down heavily, doubtless the boxes, with their
freight of earth." (Stoker, pg. 44) This gives the reader a very unique perspective, as if it were true
events that had actually happened. The book also incorporates news stories of various events
occurring during the time of the story, as it demonstrates how the events in the story affect not only
the lives of the main characters but those throughout the land as well. This also gives it a level of
realism as well. A second difference lies with the key characters in the story. The main character of
The Vampyre is Aubrey, who is shown as a moral and brave man, with no real flaws to show, and
despite taking an oath of silence, still does everything in his power to stop Lord Ruthven. In this
case, the main character is also the hero. Aubrey's heroic nature is displayed in the story during the
attack which wounds Lord Ruthven: "Lord Ruthven and Aubrey, imitating their example, retired for
a moment behind the sheltering turn of the

Dracula: Mina Harker and Lucy Westenra
In the novel, Dracula, by Bram Stoker, we are introduced to two specific ladies that are essential to
the essence of this gothic, horror novel. These two women are Mina Harker and Lucy Westenra. The
purpose for these two women was for Stoke to clearly depict the two types of women: the innocent
and the contaminated. In the beginning, the women were both examples of the stereotypical flawless
women of this time period. However, as the novel seems to progress, major differences are bound to
arise. Although both women, Lucy and Mina, share the same innocent characteristics, it's more
ascertain that with naïve and inability of self control, Lucy creates a boundary that shows the
difference between these two ladies and ultimately causes her ... Show more content on

The characteristic that successfully saves her was her ability to continue to be strong and continue to
control herself. Lucy, on the other hand, usually was weak and she didn't even try to fight off
Dracula. She often tries to not recollect the events that occurred between the two. In the end, Mina
was able to actually go back to her old habits and be back into a pure state, while Lucy, sadly, was
not able to. Lucy turned into a vampire, and as a vampire her terrible characteristics were more
apparent than those of when she was pure. While Lucy was a vampire, he eyes were "unclean and
full of hell–fire, instead of the pure, gentle orbs we knew" (222–223). Lucy was not only an active
threat to children but her desires for the men of the land also posed an active threat. At one point, Dr.
Seward recorded, "at that moment, the remnant of my love passed into hate and loathing; had she
then been killed..." (223). Both Lucy and Mina get to a common phase of purity but since Lucy has
a lack of self control and she has unexpected childish qualities, she eventually had to get back her
qualities of innocence in her death. The two main women of Dracula both have very similar
qualities. Other than that, they also have the same strong differences. In this time era, women were
represented as this perfect, loving, and intimate person; however, they often liked to drift from this
stereotype of perfection. The

The Blood Rushing Effect On Readers, And Dracula By Bram...

  • 1. The Blood Rushing Effect On Readers, And Dracula By Bram... Only few stories and novels have the blood rushing effect on readers, and Dracula by Bram Stoker is one of those novels. This novel utilizes the method of using letters and other documents in order to tell the story. The application of the epistolary technique in the story Dracula proves to be quite effective because it does enable the reader to foresee the happenings in the story on a closer and more personal scale. In this novel, the man who writes the letters in Transylvania experiences a vast amount of supernatural experiences. Within the first four chapters of Dracula, Jonathan Harker witnesses supernatural occurrence's such as seeing flickering blue lights, how Jonathan Harker's coachman magically made the were–wolves disappear, and how he cannot see the Count Dracula's reflection in the mirror. In the novel Dracula, Jonathan Harker tries to overlook these supernatural occurrences because of Mr. Hawkins interest. However, this reason may not be the most realistic justification in why Jonathan is persistent in his stay, but rather he is also aware that he is a prisoner. The novel Dracula also has many other supernatural aspects such as the three women in Count Dracula's house, and how Count Dracula proceeds down the walls in a lizard like manner. In the novel Dracula, it could be argued that Jonathan Harker is not a reliable narrator because of the fact that he is the only one in the book experiencing these occurrences and his mental state is questionable at times. ' Dracula, And Michael Pink And Bram Stoker's Dracula There's a reason why Bram Stoker's Dracula is arguably one of the greatest gothic novels of all time, and Michael Pink's readaptation of the classic certainly does not disappoint. Pink's Dracula, performed by the Colorado Ballet on Sunday, October 15, 2017, at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at Denver Center for the Performing Arts with music composed by Philip Feeney left me feeling spooked and desperately wanting more. Prevailing themes of rising tension, suspense, and terror made for an intriguing experience that was executed beautifully by a talented cast and crew. The effortless blend of horror and romance is captivating and offers a range of elements each individual audience member can appreciate. Originally premiering in 1996, Bradford Alhambra, England; the dance adaptation of Bram Stoker's gothic novel, Dracula is divided into three acts, each focusing on a different victim of Count Dracula (Domenico Luciano). Dracula tells the story of Jonathan Harker (Yosvani Ramos), who travels to Transylvania to settle a transaction with a nobleman, Count Dracula, over the purchase of property in England. As demonstrated in the first act, Harker's visit to Transylvania haunts him with recurring nightmares as he awakes in the sanatorium in shear terror wrapped in his wife's arms. In the second act, the audience is introduced to Lucy (Chandra Kuykendall), a friend of Harker's wife Mina, who is so effortlessly seduced by Dracula at a Tea Dance in the Grand Hotel. ... Dracula Summary Chapter 14 During chapter 14 of the novel Dracula we see one of our protagonists, Jonathan Harker, travel to London with his wife, Mina Harker, where they plan to group up with the group of people working to put an end to Count Dracula, including Dr.Van Helsing and Dr.Seward. As Mr.Harker recovers from his nervous breakdown from the previous chapter –which was brought about when he caught sight of a man who resembled Dracula– Dr.Van Helsing reassures Mr.Harker. After reading through Mr.Harker's journal Dr.Van Helsing determines that everything Mr.Harker had experienced was real. From that point onward all of the trauma and fear Jonathan Harker had experienced after being Dracula's prisoner was erased. In fact, Mr.Harker goes on to write about how eager he is to help in putting an end to the vampire's reign of terror when he is asked to help Dr.Van Helsing, "Then I am with you heart and soul" (198). ... This story was written in the 15th Century, during the Victorian time period. The three characteristics it portrays are good and evil, not to judge someone before you know them and man vs. himself 3) Man Vs. Himself There are clear clashes between characters; in any case, the focal clash is amongst man and his feelings of trepidation. Dracula really speaks to malice; he is a forcing character who is startling in both appearance and in his deeds. Alternate characters who interact with him understand how malevolent and startling he is. Everybody who interacts with him is threatened and terrified by him. ... He can expect the type of a creature, control the climate, and he is more grounded than twenty men. His forces are constrained, notwithstanding–for example, he can 't enter a casualty 's home unless welcomed, can 't cross water unless conveyed, and is rendered feeble by sunshine. 6) Act I Dracula touches base in England and begins feeding on Lucy Westenra which makes her turn. Act II Dr. Seward and Van Helsing give her blood transfusions, however she transforms into a vampire at any rate. They execute her and begin laying arrangements to murder Dracula also. Act III Dracula assaults Mina Harker. Things are looking urgent. The novel wraps up with Dr. Seward, Van Helsing, and team seeking after Dracula to the doors of Castle Dracula, where they at long last murder him. 7) The novel mostly is narrated in First Person but with particularly multiple characters, this effected the tone by switching characters, it actually makes the readers essentially become the characters, or so they particularly thought. 8) The climax in the story definitely is when Mina watches his eyes load with triumph, which kind of is fairly significant. Before he can completely rise, Harker and Morris for the most part cut him, however Morris soon basically kicks the bucket of wounds he particularly has endured, demonstrating how the climax in the story kind of is when Mina watches his eyes load with triumph, ... • 17. The Nature Of Good And Evil In Bram Stoker's Dracula Bram Stoker's Dracula expressed the nature of good and evil. An English realtor, Jonathan Harker, journeyed to Transylvania in order to complete a sale for a residence in London to a Transylvanian vampire, Count Dracula. What Harker did not know was that Dracula wanted to move to England so he can expand his power, creating a new monarchy of vampires. The Christian religion depicted many instances throughout Dracula. Early in the novel, Harker was preparing his journey to Dracula's castle until an innkeeper's wife put a crucifix around his neck saying it was the eve of St. George's Day, when "all the evil things in the world will have full sway." Crucifixes were a way to show that Christian objects promised protection from evil. The communion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He, being a satanic figure, revealed by the consumption of blood, and also being shown by his physical appearance; he had long, sharp fangs, fiery red eyes, and pointed ears. Dracula also had many abilities that are typically awarded strictly to God; he can control animals, the weather, and shapeshift. Christians believed that the consumption of God's body and blood through communion will give them everlasting life with God in heaven. Dracula consumed human blood in order to remain "undead" and to have strength. His horrific actions embodied the complete opposite of the God. Not only did these actions illustrated the opposition of the two figures but, it also showed how Dracula bypassed God and went to humans for his restoration in life after death. Therefore, he shunned God as the supplier of life. Dracula was as evil as a creature could become and was atrocious in the eyes of the Christian religion. He was a symbol of the Anti–Christ and Satan and the fact that holy items harmed Dracula meant he was pure evil. In the end, Harker, Van Helsing, Mina, and the love interests of Mina's friend, Lucy Westenra (Quincey Morris, Jack Seward, and Arthur Holmwood) fought against Dracula to prevent his evil. The main weapons used against Dracula were sacred utensils. Their struggle was the battle between the holy and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Victorian Women In Dracula Bram Stoker presents Lucy Westenra and Mina Murray Harker as the perfect victorian women. Full of innocence, chaste, and elegance. Prior to the arrival of Dracula, the audience sees Lucy as a as a voluptuous, beautiful woman. Lucy has three men asking for her hand in marriage. Writing to Mina, Lucy complains, "Why can't they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble?" (81). This shows she knows she cannot say those words because it is frowned upon in Victorian culture, but it does not stop her from mentally crossing rigid social boundary. Lucy is portrayed by her physical beauty and flirtatiousness. All of her three suitors are enchanted by her beauty and words. During these letter correspondents, Mina shows ... As Lucy succumbs to illness she becomes more and more unlike a perfect Victorian woman prior to Dracula's impact on her. Although she becomes weaker, paler, and closer to death, the woman becomes a wantonness being who her suitors admire and are afraid of. Once was an embodiment of a perfect Victorian woman is now a monster. As she turns into a vampire, she becomes bolder and volomptuous. The un–dead Lucy proclaims boldly, "Come to me, Arthur. • 25. Bram Stoker's Popula The book I chose to read for the book review is Dracula by Irish author Bram Stoker. It is a Gothic horror novel and was published May 26, 1897. 1897 was the height of the British Empire expansion. Great Britain had expanded to much of the land of Africa, Asia, and North America, which they used to fuel its tremendous military and economic power. But this high point was also the start of the declined to the British power. America's and Germany's rise in powers threated to remove Great Britain as the most powerful country. The increase of immigration brought many new unfamiliar races and cultures onto British soil. The turn of the century saw a sometime violent reaction to the foreigners. Back when Dracula was written it was not an immediate bestseller when it was published even though reviewers were generous with their praises of it. One review even said, "Dracula is cleverly constructed, skillfully and strongly told, and has a strong hold upon the imagination, and will hold its own with the few really powerful stories of its kind..." • 29. Different Perception of Women: Dracula by Bram Stoker In the late 19th century, when Dracula by Bram Stoker is written, women were only perceived as conservative housewives, only tending to their family's needs and being solely dependent of their husbands to provide for them. This novel portrays that completely in accordance to Mina Harker, but Lucy Westenra is the complete opposite. Lucy parades around in just her demeanor as a promiscuous and sexual person. While Mina only cares about learning new things in order to assist her soon–to–be husband Jonathan Harker. Lucy and Mina both become victims of vampirism in the novel. Mina is fortunate but Lucy is not. Overall, the assumption of women as the weaker specimen is greatly immense in the late 19th century. There are also many underlying ... It is possible that the women and Jonathan could have had sexual intercourse, due to his actions of accepting the temptation of seduction, but we will never know because Jonathan is saved by Dracula. According to Thomas Foster in his chapter "Nice to Eat You: Acts of Vampires", evil has had to do with sex since the serpent seduced Eve. (Foster 16). The act of Eve being seduced by the serpent was a sexual act and it was very evil. Foster states many things in this section that relate to Dracula. "The Count always has this weird attractiveness to him?" (16). "...always he's alluring, dangerous, mysterious and he tends to focus on beautiful, unmarked virginal women." (16). "A nasty old man, attractive but evil, violates young women, leaves his mark on them, steals their innocence and their "usefulness" and leaves them helpless followers in his sin." (16). Further analysis, however, has brought to light the buried symbols and themes of sexuality that the novel holds within it. Due to its female sexual symbolism, the novel draws the attention of most men, as exploring these female forbidden themes were more of a fantasy for them than reality. As Dracula was set in the Victorian culture, it is shown to encompass all the beliefs and prejudices of the society, especially in regards to the social gender roles of men and women. For example, all the superstitious reactions from the villagers, the very strange ride up to the castle, the lack of servants, and Count Dracula's odd demeanor. All of these things should cause alarm in Harker, yet he continues on with his task anyway. I wonder what makes him ignore these obvious signs? • 45. Mina Harker's Character In Dracula "Doors, doors, doors everywhere, and all locked and bolted. In no place... is there an available exit. The castle is a veritable prison, and I am a prisoner!" (Stoker 27). Dracula is a nineteenth–century thriller that contains horrific factors of gothic literature and takes place during the Victorian era. In the novel, Bram Stoker chooses to present strongly–written characterization of Mina Harker to counteract the elements of gothic literature by having her bring a positive mood to the story, represent women of the future, and associate loyalty with the essential characters. Throughout Dracula, Mina is the character to rely on for consistent faith and optimism. When Lucy's illness seemed to worsen with each passing day, Mina could still find comfort in her religion. The novel Dracula written by Bram Stoker is focused around the mid–20th century where women were expected to obtain Victorian ideals. This was a time where women were also emerging themselves into the New Women role, though were often met with social disapproval. Her faithfulness to Jonathan is bestowed when she says, "I have been working very hard lately, because I want to keep up with Jonathan's studies, and I have been practicing shorthand very assiduously" (86). Her commitment to her husband is her top priority, exemplifying how useful she is towards Jonathan in their marriage. Although Mina is educated, has her own self–sustaining job, and shows some characteristics of a New Woman, she uses these benefits for the purpose of supporting her husband. Furthermore, Mina endorses maternal characteristics in order to support the other men in the group. Furthermore, she does not conform to sexual urges which ensures the fact that Mina exemplifies the Victorian women perfectly: "We women have something of the mother in us that makes us rise above smaller matters when the mother–spirit is invoked; I felt this big, sorrowing man's head resting on me, as though it were that of the baby that someday may lie on my bosom, and I stroked his hair as though he were my own child" (247). The men within the group regard Mina as a motherly figure and confide in her. On multiple occasions Mina is described as "angelic" but once she is tainted with Dracula's blood she is instantly malicious and immoral. • 61. Mina Harker From Dracula For centuries, women in England and the Americans were seen as objects. Women were looked at as the weaker sex and as inferior (less than) to men. Men have always been perceived as the stronger sex, having the superiority and power over women. Traditionally, men were the authoritarians and the heads of the household. However, the roles for women have changed in both America and England. As time progresses, women have gain control of their rights and attained some gender equality in society such as working outside their homes and having an education. One way of examining this change is in Gothic fiction by looking at how women have evolved themselves from the patriarchal culture. Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray (later Mina Harker), and Dr. Seward write the largest contributions to the novel although the writings of Lucy Westenra and Abraham Van Helsing constitute some key parts of the book. The novel has a slightly journalistic feel, as it is a harrowing account supposedly written by the people who witnessed the book's events. Dracula desires to become a part of English culture and society so thoroughly that he will be able to blend into society, a feat that Harker helps him accomplish. Dracula desires this because he wants to live in and infect Britain. This terrifying image strikes at the heart of an anxiety of Victorian Britain. He knows for certain that he wants to marry and spend the rest of his life with Mina but still struggles with natural, sexual urges. The reader clearly detects Jonathan's struggle when he encounters the three vampire ladies in Dracula's castle. As he lies there, Jonathan feels "an agony of delightful anticipation," and also describes one of the ladies as having "a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive" (38–39). Here Jonathan uses contrasting words to describe his encounter with the vampires. In his mind, he knows this is wrong, but his body is telling him otherwise: "[T]he skin of my throat began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems that Dracula is only sucking Lucy's blood, so if the reader interprets sucking blood as having sex, then they can identify Dracula as having sex with Lucy multiple times. The reader cannot forget that Lucy had multiple blood transfusions from her three suitors and Van Helsing. Now, if we take another look, considering each man's blood in Lucy, then the reader can interpret Dracula sucking the blood of the men through Lucy as him having sexual relations with each of Lucy's donors. The second, and possibly the most obvious instance, is when Dracula imprisons Jonathan in his castle. McCrea supports this view by stating, "For queer theorists ... this is the episode that furnishes the most glaring moments of homoeroticism" (266). In the climax of Jonathan's mystical sexual experience with the vampire ladies, Dracula bursts in the room exclaiming, "'How dare you touch him ... How dare you cast eyes on him when I had forbidden it? ... This man belongs to me! Beware how you meddle with him, or you'll have to deal with me.'" Then one of the vampire ladies replies, "'You yourself never loved; you never love'" (39–40). Here the reader witnesses Dracula's extreme possession of Jonathan, saying that Jonathan "belongs" to him (39). Yu also interprets this scene as "Dracula ... • 89. Dracula's Role Of Women During The Victorian Era Have you ever wondered why women are the way they are today? Well, Dracula takes a very good look at how women were once treated and hints at what they will evolve into. Dracula takes place during the Victorian Era where women were considered less than men. Dracula was written back in 1897 and contains Religious references that aid the main characters to subdue the cruel vampire known as Dracula. During the Victorian Era women were stay at home wives and their only job was to have children and to tidy up the house. They were devoted to their husband and everything they did was to benefit their husband. Women were viewed as fragile creatures that should not be involved in anything dangerous. However, some of these women, such as the three vampire sisters, are very dangerous, capable of killing children so that they may live longer, which contradicts the thought that women are fragile and need protecting. In Bram Stoker's Dracula the role of Victorian women in England have continuously evolved into what women are today. Van Helsing's biggest compliment for Mina is that she has a "man's brain". In his eyes Mina's combination of masculine intellect and feminine sweetness makes her the perfect Victorian woman. Written by Amanda Turner Discuss possible answers to this question with reference to at least two critical or theoretical essays and at least two tellings ' of the Dracula story._______________________________________________ The Vampire in Dracula threatens the very existence of Victorian England. Stoker constructs the vampire as an embodiment of threat by surpassing his Gothic novelist predecessors to bring the threat of the Gothic home to Victorian England (Arata 119). This in turn crosses the boundary between what is foreign and what is national; and dually East and West. Dracula is open to many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once infected by Dracula, Lucy becomes sexually overt and aggressive; and is portrayed as a monster and a social outcast. She transforms into the ‘Bloofar Lady ' and feeds on children making her the maternal antithesis as well as a child molester (Jones, p. 87). In order to rectify Lucy 's condition she is sexually overpowered by her fiancee Holmwood; he penetrates her to death with a stake through the chest, a staking which is overtly sexual in interpretation, as "the thing in the coffin writhed; and a hideous, blood–curdling screech came from the opened red lips. The body shook and quivered and twisted in wild contortions; the sharp white teeth champed together till the lips were cut, and the mouth was smeared with a crimson foam.........He looked like a figure of Thor as his untrembling arm rose and fell, driving deeper and deeper" (Stoker p. 241). This sexual innuendo restores the Victorian balance of sexual penetration from the female domain back its accepted station within the male domain. Showalter interprets the killing as a gang rape, done with "impressive phallic instrument" (p. 181). "Those serial transfusions which, while they pretend to serve and protect ‘good women, ' actually enable the otherwise inconceivable interfusion of the blood that is semen ... • 97. Good Vs. Evil In Dracula By Bram Stoker Evil never conquers because good always overcomes it. A good example of this is the book Dracula by Bram Stoker because the author expresses the nature of good vs. evil. Dracula wants to come to London because he wants to turn everyone into vampires. The basic background of the book Dracula is when Jonathan Harker, a realtor who is sent to Transylvania to complete a transaction with Dracula so he can come to England. What Harker does not know is that Dracula has a plan for world domination. Well, while Harker is on a train to Transylvania he enters "the east, a section of Europe whose peoples and customs will be for the most part, strange and unfamiliar" (Dracula, 20). Dracula explains to him that he will no be able to make the trip to London, but one of his trusted servants will be going along with Harker back to London. After supper Jonathan analyzes Dracula and notices one very strange feature, his mouth is thick and white; they cover sharp white teeth, which stick out over his lip. What Jonathan does not know is that those teeth are canine teeth only found in animals. There are exceptions, for instance, vampires have these teeth so they can puncture the human's carotid vessel in their neck and suck their blood. The first time that Jonathan sees Dracula's cannibal teeth grow is when Harker starts shaving. He accidentally cuts himself and Dracula leaps for his throat so he can suck his blood. Harker touches his crucifix and Dracula's "demonic fury" vanishes. The strangest event that Harker notices in Dracula's castle is "Dracula emerge from his room on the floor below, slither out, head downward, in lizard fashion, with his cloak spread out around him like great wings" (Dracula, 179). This shows that "Dracula is not a person. He is a presence, an absence that requires concealing" (Wolf, 368). This tells Harker that something is very wrong with this man. • 105. Suspense in Bram Stoker's Epistolary Novel 'Dracula' Suspense in Bram Stoker's Epistolary Novel Dracula Bram Stoker uses the epistolary narrative to create suspense in Dracula by drawing the reader into the personal lives (through the characters' diary entries and letters) and allowing him to experience the events of the novel on an intimate level. Each character provides a first–hand, first–person perspective, unique for that specific character's sex, level of education, profession, and state in life, as well as for that character's ability to create an atmosphere of dread through description of the scene. This paper will show how the different characters use their own experiences to create suspense in Stoker's Dracula. The novel is subtitled a "A Mystery Story," and each chapter is a portion of one of the characters' journal, diary or letter, providing clues as to the nature of Dracula and how to thwart his evil intentions. The story begins with Jonathan Harker's journal, which is conveniently recorded "in shorthand" (1), giving the narrative a quick pace and a personal touch. Harker includes mental notes such as, "Mem., get recipe for Mina," while noting the details of his dinner, which establishes his connections/relationships, status in life, etc., without much interrupting the narrative flow. Before the reader realizes it, he is immersed in the diarist's life. It is through Harker's journal that the reader is introduced to Dracula and his somewhat mysterious behavior. • 109. Dracula Gender Roles In Bram Stoker's Dracula, two different types of women are presented throughout the plot. Lucy Westenra and Mina Harker can both be compared to the upcoming "'New Woman'" (Grand 271) of the Victorian era. A new kind of woman; riding a bicycle and no more willing to put her fate into a rich husband's hand but instead keen on working herself. To what extent the two main female characters resemble this 'New Woman' depends on their performative acts, Judith Butlers' notion after which gender is constructed. According to Butler, "gender is in no way a stable identity or locus of agency from which various acts proceed; rather, it is an identity tenuously constituted in time – an identity instituted through a stylised repetition of acts" (519). So ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These acts however are not a matter of totally individual choice. "Surely, there are nuanced and individual ways of doing one's gender, but that one does it, and that one does it in accord with certain sanctions and proscriptions, is clearly not a fully individual matter" (Butler 525). Since these acts and hence gender its own are social constructions possessing certain cultural significations, the completely liberated choice of performing one's gender is impeded. On one hand, Mina herself believes in the importance of female tradition and motherhood especially. "We women have something of the mother in us that makes us rise above smaller matters when the mother–spirit is invoked" (Stoker 214). Mina notices such maternal feelings as she consoles her fellows, this time Arthur Holmwood. On the other hand, she is aware of these proscriptions and therefore sees it as her duty to prefer marriage and motherhood to an individual career. "You can't go on for some years teaching etiquette and decorum to other girls without the pedantry of it biting into yourself a bit" (Stoker 160). The same goes for Lucy. While during the day she is concerned with her growing 'dark' side slowly leading her away from social norms, her nightly sleepwalking makes it possible to act out her voluptuous nature. • 113. Dracula: An Epitome of the Gothic Novel Alex Prather Weems British Literature August 9, 2010 Dracula, by Bram Stoker, is quite the epitome of the gothic novel. Towards the beginning of the story, the setting takes place in an old and ominous castle, which is highly characteristic of gothic literature. Harker's tribulation begins when "the driver was in the act of pulling up the horses in the courtyard of a vast ruined castle," (Stoker 18). There is also a gloomy and menacing tone given to the setting of the novel, as in most pieces of gothic literature. This gloom is evident early on in the novel, as it reads, "Then a dog began to howl somewhere in a farmhouse far down the road––a long, agonized wailing, as if from fear."(Stoker 16). Also coinciding with the nature of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Seward as he states, "The sweetness was turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to voluptuous wantonness." (Stoker 226). Lastly, Dracula embodies a symbol of great and overwhelming power. Dracula proclaims his own might as he declares, "My revenge is just begun! I spread it over centuries, and time is on my side. Your girls that you all love are mine already; and through them you and others shall yet be mine – my creatures, to do my bidding and to be my jackals when I want to feed." Count Dracula has a profound effect on all the characters in the work of literature. Jonathan Harker's true determine and courage is brought about to prove that he is more than just a mere solicitor when he is faced with the troubling dilemma of being trapped in a vampire's castle. His testament that he will escape may be observed in his journal as so: "I shall not remain alone with them; I shall try to scale the castle wall farther than I have yet attempted. I shall take some of the gold with me, lest I want it later. I may find a way from this dreadful place." (Stoker 59). One may also observe the complete distraught the Count reeks on Harker. Mina's diary reveals that he "raved of dreadful things," (Stoker 116). Lucy Westenra is affected at great lengths also. Dracula causes her horrible nightmares, and transforms her dreams into "a presage of horror," (Stoker 138). Eventually the Counts consequence is so heavy upon her that she is transformed ... • 117. The Brave Gentlemen And Men Of Science This lack of maternal instinct is reaffirmed in Stoker's work in two separate instances: when Lucy lures small children in order to consume them and feed off of their vitality, and in the scene where the Count takes a newborn to be devoured by the three monstrous women. Insatiable, these femme fatales are also responsible for the physical decline of Jonathan Harker; they consume his blood and strength, in a clear allusion to nineteenth–century representations involving the unbridled consumption of female desires and sexuality: "He is young and strong; there are kisses for us all," (Stoker 69) celebrates one of the vampires. Here, the heroic capabilities of man are simultaneously admired and undercut. The brave gentlemen and men of science outline typical representations of manhood in their shared eagerness to fight the alien threat of the vampire Dracula and his army of infected humans. However, the group's shared need for masculinity transforms women into commodities, because men's anxieties are also directed towards homosocial desires, which they fear will develop into a morally corruptive homosexual performance. Signorotti states: "The only way to eliminate the homosexual threat between men is to include a woman in the relationship" (Signorotti 608). Thus, in Dracula the emphasis on male prowess is inherently anchored in the figure of the female "angel in the house" and in their ambition to protect women from external threat. Throughout the film Dracula tries to win over Mina in order to regain his love with Elisabeta, who commits suicide after false rumours of Draculas death are feed to her by priest. Although Coppola starts the film with a brilliant representation of Stoker's monster, he seems to embellish on the younger Dracula (12:44–13:00). In the novel Dracula becomes younger by gorging himself with blood, but Jonathan Harker describes him "like a filthy leech, exhausted with his repletion" (83). This can be viewed as a creativity on Stoker 's part, or as a form of religious or social commentary on his changing era. There are several flaws presented throughout the novel as the plot unfolds, which are: characters in the novel dismiss the old traditional belief of the supernatural, the constant power struggle between the sexes and the Victorian views on sexuality. This was the era of the confronting 'New Woman ', who strove to be emancipated both politically and sexually, a concept which much of the society at the time found highly seditious and unsettling. Not only is the idea of the 'New Woman ' despised by the society, but the concept of a patriarchal society changing towards modernity poses as a threat to the Victorian men. For example, Lucy is the first victim of Dracula in England who turns into a vampire and the men are shocked at the appearance of what she has changed into: "My own heart grew cold as ice, I could hear the gasp of Arthur as we recognized the features of Lucy Westenra. Lucy Westenra, but yet how changed"(196). Dr. Seward is the speaker of this quote and he is horrified by Lucy 's transformation because the former Lucy had characteristics of an ideal Victorian woman; which is to be frivolous and naïve. However, now she is a woman who is carnal and unspiritual, which is the perceived danger represented by the 'New Woman '. This posed a threat to the upper middle–class heterosexual Protestant male in the society because the 'New Woman ' is thought to be equal to men. • 133. A Common Concern Throughout The Victorian Era A common concern throughout the Victorian era was the role women maintained and their position in society. It was expected that both males and females conformed to these roles and followed the gender expectations of their society. Bram Stoker 's Dracula describes a post dated European setting in which most women are subject to explicit gender roles and stereotypes. The norm in this society is for women to be modest, prim and proper. However, the novel narrates the possibilities of a situation in which women don 't conform and thus are scrutinized. Bram Stoker 's purpose in Dracula is to express the threat faced by men when encountering women who are in control of their sexuality and the power that is accompanied with that control. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the men are reflecting on the woman Lucy used to be, Jack Seward comments that "[they] recognized the features of Lucy Westenra. Lucy Westenra, but yet how changed. The sweetness was turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to voluptuous wantonness" (Stoker, 195). Seward uses very different extreme words to contrast Lucy 's character before and after her transition. The words "sweetness" and "purity" are associated with the once pure, modest Lucy and the terms "adamantine, heartless cruelty" and "voluptuous wantonness" are associated with the new, profoundly sexual Lucy. Seward 's descriptions of Lucy indicate that the men are concerned because she too was sexually expressive and that poses a threat to the patriarchal beliefs and values that were set in stone in this era. The author also uses repetition of Lucy 's name, "Lucy Westenra" emphasizing that while the name is still the same, everything else about her is completely different. It is evident that Seward, along with other men are more inclined to perceive modest women more positively than women who are not. As a result of adversely characterized women, Stoker is able to use juxtaposition to convey how men feel about women and their sexualities. Bram Stoker uses this element of form when Jonathan comes across the beautiful women in the forbidden section of the castle. Jonathan says "I am alone in the castle ... In this time of enlightenment, superstition and science are constantly shown to be intertwined in a way that seems to bewilder the characters as much it does the audience. • 145. The Use Of Gothic Elements In Dracula By Bram Stoker Vampires: How They Were Made Most people wonder where the idea of vampires came from and how did the first one come about. The novel, Dracula, is set and written in the nineteenth century during the Victorian era. The Victorian people had certain beliefs about Christianity and the roles of men and women in society. Women were allowed only to do certain things and were expected to do specific things in regards to men. The Victorian people also had their own interpretation of superstitions. Stoker introduced the Victorian people to gothic elements in his literary works. In literature, gothic novels often use gothic elements to support their themes and the mood. Therefore, the gothic element of degeneration and decay supports the theme of good versus evil throughout the novel. Stoker also uses the atmosphere throughout the novel to establish the vampire tradition. This gothic element is displayed in Jonathan's journey to Bistritz: "As we wound on our endless way, and the sun sank lower and lower behind us. This was emphasized by the fact that the snowy mountain–top still held the sunset, seemed to glow out with a delicate cool pink...goitre was painfully prevalent" (Stoker 8). Usually the atmosphere of the book is filled with degeneration and decay, so both of these gothic elements play a role in making a gothic novel. These gothic elements also establish the vampire tradition of the setting and superstition. This atmosphere concept is used in other novels as well like the novel Moby Dick: "...its [the ship's] weather–stained hull, its venerable bows, its grotesqueness and somber picturesqueness" (Magistrale 203). In this quote, Tony Magistrale is comparing a ship at sea, the Pequod, to a haunted house on land. Magistrale's purpose of comparing the ship to the house is to present the use of gothic elements to build up the setting for a gothic novel. Bram Stoker no doubt must have used The Vampyre as an influence, but only as an influence, as his story has its own unique details regarding characters and plot. (Stoker, pg. 44) This gives the reader a very unique perspective, as if it were true events that had actually happened. The book also incorporates news stories of various events occurring during the time of the story, as it demonstrates how the events in the story affect not only the lives of the main characters but those throughout the land as well. This also gives it a level of realism as well. A second difference lies with the key characters in the story. The main character of The Vampyre is Aubrey, who is shown as a moral and brave man, with no real flaws to show, and despite taking an oath of silence, still does everything in his power to stop Lord Ruthven. In the end, Mina was able to actually go back to her old habits and be back into a pure state, while Lucy, sadly, was not able to. Lucy turned into a vampire, and as a vampire her terrible characteristics were more apparent than those of when she was pure. While Lucy was a vampire, he eyes were "unclean and full of hell–fire, instead of the pure, gentle orbs we knew" (222–223). Lucy was not only an active threat to children but her desires for the men of the land also posed an active threat.
